We booked a last minute weekend getaway to Saugatuck for our Anniversary.. literally the Monday before we were going to leave on Friday. There wasn't many options close to downtown that were available or reasonable. I found Beachway for $150 a night compared to $300+ for a room just across the water. After reading lots of reviews, I booked and crossed my fingers. We arrived and were greeted by Cathy at the front desk. So sweet and informative! Walked me through everything we needed to know - front desk hours (she was staying the night so would be available for emergencies and ring the bell if needed! So sweet), breakfast area with coffee, donuts, and fresh fruit, and all the amenities they had - games, movies, snacks, etc. They walked me to the room to make sure I knew where it was and to show me around. I had left a note in our reservation about it being our Anniversary and the staff left us a bottle of Prosecco and some nuts - SO sweet and totally unexpected. The room was small - as was described - but very clean and well maintained. The bed, two nightstands, small dresser, TV, and shelf with hangers was in one area of the room and the other half had two chairs, small table, & the sink area outside of the actual bathroom. The sink had a hand towel, makeup towel (black so not to stain easily from makeup - great idea), blow dryer, 2 bars of soap, shampoo, conditioner, and 2 makeup wipes. (no lotion). The bathroom has a door and was recently remodeled - toilet and small shower with a curtain. The renovation was VERY well done, but the shower is pretty small (but tall). We did not use the pool but it appeared to be heated - we hardly saw anyone using it but it appear clean and well maintained. There are lots of decks with ample seating to hang out and watch the activities across the channel. The location is great! short 8-10 min drive to downtown Saugatuck or Douglas. Chain Ferry is a block away and super convenient - and charming! Oval beach is a short 5 minute drive away (walking distance but very hilly and no sidewalks - it's mostly through the woods) My ONLY complaint about the Beachway is the fact that there is no individual temperature controls in the rooms - it is an older establishment that looks retrofitted into individual rooms so everyone must be on the same run. It got a little stuffy in our room, so we opened the windows at night. It was cool outside but the cool air didn't' seem to come in at all. There also is no fan in the room to move the air. So, I would recommend bringing fans if you can. We were on the floor above the lobby so maybe other areas don't have this issue. I did see comments in other reviews about paper thin walls and hearing everything - while I would agree, we didn't find it to be an issue as there didn't seem to be many guests. Out door didn't close flush so at night you could see light coming through from the hallway - even with that we didn't hear people out and about. Overall, this is a charming place that we definitely said we'd bring our kids back to! For a couple traveling for their anniversary looking for a place to just lay their heads, it worked out extremely well! read more

The room was the worst we ever stayed in and it cost $288. The pictures did not accurately show how small the room was or that the bathroom sink is in the bedroom, an arms length from the bed . You cannot control the room temperature , and there were no additional pillows or blankets available. The furniture was old, outdated and uncomfortable . Find another place to stay . read more

Very friendly, welcoming staff. Price is very reasonably affordable compared to others in the area. Make sure you understand which type of room you are getting. Their basic rooms are small and across from each other in a hallway. But they have many room choices that offer more privacy and even have suites across the street along the water. We stayed in room 300 two bedroom cottage which was perfect with a small child. Having a kitchen came in handy. They have movies to rent, board games to borrow. Heated pool. And you're literally a 60 second drive up the hill to Oval Beach which is fantastic. The building/s are basically a converted big house from the 80s probably so there could be some upgrades but one could argue that is the style of this type of resort. Think of this as a B&B vibe. Location is in a prime spot for the beach. If you plan to go to Saugatuck every day, you can easily take the chain ferry across the street that runs from end of May until beginning of Sept. or drive 5 minutes. There is plenty of free parking downtown. Overall, I would highly recommend this place especially when you'll pay $300-$500 more for a hotel or AirBNB if you're doing an extended stay. read more

What a great place to stay! We utilized their one & only suite, because we wanted a water view & our own private patio area. The bed was super comfy, cute small kitchen (with a full sized fridge!), large bathroom & everything was spotless clean. Also, it's conveniently located right across from the ferry that takes you into the town of Saugatuck. My only complaint was there's 3 skylights in the bedroom & it rained twice during the night when we stayed here. Having a skylight in a bedroom first of all is a bad idea, especially if you'd like to sleep past 6am & when it rains, it's REALLY loud on the plexiglass skylights. Other than that, everything was great. Definitely would stay here again. read more

Very nice older but well-maintained hotel. Has a b&b vibe, very friendly staff. great location near the beach and the chain ferry. only criticism is that the walls are "thin". one night we easily heard 2-3 spirited amorous exchanges next door with sounds, commentary, and the pictures on our side of the wall keeping time with the affectionate couple. while i admire the spirit, i would have preferred not to have felt like an unwilling participate. barring this, its a great place! read more

This is the perfect beach getaway. The rooms aren't anything fancy but very functional and everything you need for a beach weekend. The pool is refreshing and the office is stacked with board games. The staff went above and beyond to make sure it was a fun birthday weekend by surprising us with a bottle of wine at our door. read more

We loved our three day and two night stay here in August, 2016. The staff is really, really friendly-keep up the good work on that! The resort is very, very clean, and we loved the stuffed animals on the kid's beds. What a welcoming touch. Our room was large. The bathroom is a bit outdated, and the walls are a bit thin (loud on our second night). However, these issues were tolerable. The location is great, with just a short drive to the beach (do not recommend walking with little kids) or downtown, and the chain ferry is just across the street (watch for changes in the hours for wind or end of season). We used the pool each day, and it is fine for a family. I really liked all of the various decks with lovely flowers and ample seating. Parking is very easy at the property. Breakfast was fruit, coffee, and mini donuts. Again, all worked for the family. Will book again. read more

The king suite on the river was beyond our expectations! The view was incredible. I could have sat on the patio all day - especially relaxing in the morning. The ferry to cross the river to downtown is right next door and runs from 9am-9pm - super convienient. Coffee and donuts in the morning was a nice touch. read more

It was a tough decision on whether to give 3 or 4 stars here, but in the end, I think 4 is probably the better choice. My wife and I came to Saugatuck for 3 nights for our honeymoon in August. We got a room by the river, across the street from the main hotel, and I think that was a wise choice. It's a bit further from the pool and seems much more private. And the view on the balcony looking out over the river was amazing. The room had a full kitchen with dishes, silverware, coffeemaker, etc. The wifi was surprisingly fast--I was getting about 30mbps. There is a smart TV in the living room, so you can watch netflix (you'll have to log in with your own account). There is a walkout sliding glass door in both the living room and bedroom leading to the balcony. Now, the bad. When we looked on the hotel website, our room said nothing about being a non-smoking room, and on our reservation confirmation, it specifically said smoking is not allowed in the room but that you CAN SMOKE ON THE BALCONY. But when we arrived, we were told, nope, you can't smoke even outside on the balcony. If we did, we'd be charged $255 for a cleaning fee... for the balcony, I guess? We were told we could smoke down on the grass below in the "common area." This common area was literally 10 feet from our balcony, so... what's the point? Also, the stairs to get down to this area were kind of uneven and totally dark. It seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen when you tell customers they can only go there to smoke, and then make them go down a pitch-black set of stairs. Anyway, the point is, if you want the whole place to be non-smoking, that's fine Just don't tell people when they reserve the room that they can smoke, and then change it up on them at check-in. Also, the room was not very clean when we arrived. There were crumbs and hair on the couch, the floor was dirty, the kitchen was dirty, etc. We spent about an hour after we arrived just cleaning the place. We expected more for $300/night. Still, I've got to admit, other than those problems, we loved our stay. Sleeping with the fresh air and sounds of the river right outside the bedroom was nice. Overall, I'd probably go back. read more

I love the Beachway Resort. We had a group of 27 stay there for a family reunion and it was great. You can walk to the beach and take the Chain Ferry into town. The pool was clean and the rooms are older but very clean. The staff was great, too. read more

Lovely place in a location that truly can't be beat. However, our room on the 1st floor did not have its own heating/cooling controls and the temperature in the room (in July) was uncomfortably cold -- to the point where we had to wear jackets whenever we were inside. The temp overnight was much colder: even with a blanket and fluffy comforter I was not able to sleep until I got up and put on warmer clothes. It really detracted from an otherwise very nice place. I recommend asking about this before you book; they have a lot of different room configurations, so perhaps some do have their own temp control. read more

We stayed in the Beachway Inn's "Watermelon Cottage" the weekend of June 21, 2013, at a rate of $270 per night. While the cottage was very clean on the inside, the screened porch was very dirty/bug filled, the interior furnishings were not very comfortable nor was it outfitted in a manner consistent with the price charged. There was no daily cleaning service and signage stating dishes, etc. are not included in the daily rate. Yet, strangely enough, there were only two drinking glasses, a utensil service for 4, and no dish towels. While not the fault of Beachway, the "convenient" ferry to Saugatuck was operating only 1.5 days out of our 4 day stay so we couldn't avoid the parking issues in Saugatuck. Overall, we believe the Watermelon Cottage is seriously over-priced for the level of accommodation provided. read more

My mom and I were looking for a reasonably priced place to stay for a night. We stumbled upon this hotel and enjoyed our stay! It is a really cute place. The front staff was courteous and helpful. The rooms are all uniquely designed and very clean. Quiet too! The breakfast was great. Good location right down the road from the beautiful Oval Beach. Right across from downtown Saugatuck shopping too. Adorable place! We will definitely be back!! read more

Encourages smoking of cigarettes and cigars on the property by placing ashtrays on tables on the balcony/walkways immediately outside your window. Your neighbor's smoke comes pouring into your room. Maybe everyone smokes in Michigan. But putting ashtrays out on a "no smoking property" makes it a property where cigarette and cigar smokers rule. Management was non-responsive when we complained. Apparently our neighbors weren't smoking directly inside our room so that was okay. And by "non smoking property" management meant, well who knows? Because management puts ashtrays right outside your window for your fellow resort goer to use. And when the smoke comes into your room? Not management's issue at all. read more

My wife and son have been ending our summer in Saugatuck for the last two years. Both times we've stayed at the Beachway Resort. Their poolside rooms are just the ticket when you have an 8yr old who loves to swim. The 2nd year, the room we reserved needed a new mattress for some reason. The first night they upgraded us to one of their suites while they handled the swap. Its always clean, everything works and the proximity to downtown and Oval Beach cannot be beat. Can't wait for our third trip this year. read more

Kind of like camping out. Found out there were no elevators but they did agree to carry our luggage up. Room small and clean but shabby. At least the bed was comfortable. "Breakfast" was oranges, apples coffee and the kind of cheap donuts you buy by the tub. Not real friendly. I won't go back. You get what you pay for! read more

Grossly overpriced. Noisy. Inconvenient. My partner and I arrived late Friday night and found our suite clean, beautifully decorated spacious and inviting. Exhausted after working a full week and battling traffic out of Chicago that day, we quickly unpacked and fell into bed. At precisely 7:30 the next morning we were jolted awake by footsteps both shoed and barefoot across the hardwood floors of the unit above. The added sounds of chairs and tables being dragged across the same hardwood floors as well as the countless dropping of utensils onto the floor was more than we could tolerate and so we got out of bed earlier than we would have liked. Our stay was in mid October so the weather was grey and wet. Half of the area establishments were closed until next Spring. We toured the area and lakeshore Saturday and returned that evening after dinner. We enjoyed the gas fireplace in the living room, struggled with the unit's spotty WiFi, and settled into the jacuzzi before falling into bed that night. We were awakened throughout the night by the jacuzzi's loud automatic pumps which kicked on full blast to dry the tub's jets to minimize the risk of their becoming mildewed. At sunrise the torturous sounds of plodding feet, scraping of furniture legs, and crashing of utensils on hardwood floors had us out of bed that Sunday morning at 7:00. In no hurry to race back to Chicago, I asked if we could stay in the room past the standard 11:00 checkout time so that we could take our time making our breakfast, enjoy the jacuzzi for the second time and pack and was told no, absolutely no. So we quickly showered, gathered our stuff, paid the outrageous bill and left. Maybe, and it's a pretty doubtful maybe this would be a nice place to spend a day or two during the summer months, but then the fireplace and jacuzzi wouldn't be needed. During our Saturday tour of the area we came across many motels and resorts at much less the cost and I'm certain more quite and convenient than what we experienced at the Beachway Motel. I recommend you save your money and frustration and look into staying at one of these other establishments instead. read more
