This was my first time shopping at this Beacon's Closet location and I was pretty impressed. That had a wonderful selection of clothing and accessories that were well organized. I went there looking for a jacket/coat for Spring and miraculously I found a nice trench coat in my size. Masks were enforced and we were even expected to wear them in the fitting rooms so I appreciated that. Definitely look forward to returning to do more shopping. read more

My favorite vintage store in NYC ! ! ! This store is brilliant, I have bought here super gorgeous designer clothes in new condition for as little as 25$ up to 50$, for example: - Ralph Lauren blazer 25$ -Armani silver metal purse 15$ -Moschino dress 50$ -Alexander Wang satin trousers 50$ -Calvin Klein leather belt 10$ and many more items..... I trade my clothes and accessories for credit --- as their prices are low it is very worth it. The offer on garments is incredible, everything is organized by color and type of garment. TIP: It would be great if everything is organized by size as well, it will safe time for staff and customers, the quantity of stock is overwhelming and I guess its too much work for the staff to separate sizes too ( at least at the beginning in the long run it will be more efficient). And it will be easier for customers to find the right items quicker... . Here I bring all my European friends especially from London, Paris and Berlin, who love this store like me and they always find really cool garments. Best is to get here in the morning when everything is still organized and quiet as the day goes on this store is busy and the staff is fighting against the mountain of clothes which are pulled out tried on and left to put back... yes it does get a little crazy but that is part of the fun (for the clients---not so much for the staff). Welp. How do I begin? Let's all take a deep breath, get a cup of tea, and settle in for this story. I walked into this location around 11 AM with a huge garbage bag full of clothes, intending to sell them. I walked straight back to the selling section of the store and was told they'd call my name when my clothes were ready. I walked around the store for a while and ended up waiting an hour before finding out that they had already looked through my clothes, wanted nothing, and didn't have the decency to call my name and let me know that. The real tea here is this: if you're a woman of color with a purse, watch out. I had with me a really loose tote bag that was about half the size of a regular tote bag. It's such a thin and loose material that if I stuffed anything in there, you could definitely see the outline. While perusing the socks, and waiting for my clothes to be done, a sales associate behind the jewelry counter looked at me up and down and said, with no smile or kindness, "Can I have your bag?" I looked into her eyes and saw exactly what she was thinking, "This brown girl is going to steal." She looked very nervous. If there's a no "large" bag policy, she should be used to asking this question and shouldn't look so scared. I asked her, "Oh, do I have to?" She said, "I'd prefer it." So I gave it to her and walked around the store. While walking around, I noticed that every other woman carried a tote bag, many of them leather (making it harder to see what's inside). Their bags were much larger than mine. I also noticed that every woman shopping was white, except for me. Huh. I went back to this sales associate and said, "Every other woman here has her bag, so can I have mine back?" She replied, "Sure, I just like to take bigger bags." I took a peek behind her and saw that the only other bags taken were large backpacks, which is pretty NYC standard. I later left and called the store, speaking with the manager who was kind and understanding. She said that the bag policy is definitely not something they force and she's going to speak with that associate about her approach to me. All of the other women in that store were white and they kept their large bags. My medium-sized bag was taken away and I was the only person of color. While in the store I felt so conflicted: do I stand up for myself and make a scene, possibly getting thrown out by security and playing into the "crazy Latina" trope? Or do I just go home and write a strongly-worded Yelp review? I chose the latter. Women of color, watch out. read more

Great thrifting. Snotty staff, half of whom stand around pretending to work or be bored by the dressing rooms when there's a 15 minute wait to try things on. I have been a client, selling and buying, at Beacon's Closet for as long as they have been opened. I enjoy thrifting and finding clothing there. I must say that the quality of the service; the employees, is very poor. And that has been consistent from the beginning, but at this point it's just getting more annoying, to the point of not wanting to shop/sell there anymore. Most staff can't even have eye contact, or have basic social etiquette. Costumers seems to be a annoyance to them. I recently sold at the 13th st location, 2 bags of designers samples mainly (Italian cashmere, silk, Loro Piana,etc) and Emily, the buyer, did not even bother looking through my bags! The bags were returned untouched. When I pointed it out to her, she said she looked through. That was less than 8 minutes after drop off, items were untouched. They are by far some of the rudest employees of any business I have got to interact with. I am in the service business and this company could benefit hugely from having their employees trained to be a minimum courteous, polite and well mannered. I also noticed that recently, the price has gone up, nearly doubled. Based on that and the staff rudeness, and price going up, this store is not heading in the right direction. Never knew there was Beacon's Closet in Manhattan until I unexpectedly stumbled upon it this morning! It has been a while since I've been to their other location in Williamsburg, so I decided to have a look. The interior of the store is large but feels confined due to the amount of clothing racks. I constantly had to excuse myself in order to get through. I like how the clothes are color coordinated so it makes it somewhat easier to find what you're looking for. Personally, I don't go into a thrift store looking for something specific because you never know what you'll come across! Similarly to the Williamsburg location, there is a wide range of women's clothing; shoes, skirts, dresses, coats, and a variety of tops galore! However, the men's section was much more limited in comparison. Prices vary depending on the clothing material and style, but most price tags go along with the clothing quality. I ended up purchasing a hidden gem that I've been eyeing lately: a vintage windbreaker with an embroidered back! The Asian dragon was the perfect touch since I was looking for that exact style. I was a bit disappointed with the price, however ($40). I think they could have made it a tad cheaper for being a used item. Nonetheless, I will return to this location in the future for more epic finds! read more

I was in the store to shop and witnessed 2 separate women being treated so rudely by the staff. One was speaking to a buyer who verbally attacked her and was joined by 3 additional staff members criticizing the customer's manner of speech as though she was less than worthy of their time. When she left angry and upset, they all gossiped about her publicly to the entire staff. The second customer was reporting an incident to a manager who told her "the staff was not trained to be nice to the customers". I too left disgusted and couldn't believe how unprofessional they all were towards customers. It's a culture that breeds nasty, unprofessional, seemingly uneducated and very pretentious help. I'll never recommend to any of my students or friends or go back. read more

The clothes are great- awesome selection of designer clothing and other stylish garb... but the people that work here are mostly moody and unhelpful! Either they are seriously mistreated and miserable as a result or they are trained to be terrible. Shopped here before and found a few treasures even though the store is cramped and merch is tough to sort through. However, rating is primarily for their suboptimal buying process. I've been selling to stores like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads for ages and am honestly surprised how crappy the experience at this store was. The intake involves copying your drivers license/id on carbon paper. The staff's general unprofessional attitude makes one nervous to share personal info. They encourage dropping off your stuff so you won't be present when they sort/price. Presume it's better for them to not be held accountable. Even if you stay they won't let you hold onto your own belongings while you wait to sell. Few chairs, incredibly loud music and nasty inpatient buyers make it hard to even know when it's your turn. Buyer was flat out rude from the moment my name was called because even though I was sitting it the waiting area I couldn't hear the announcements over the music. Eventually another buyer intervened in my defense to point out it was impossible to hear anything that afternoon and he needed to speak up or walk over to the waiting sellers. The buyer dumped all my stuff out (1tote bag's worth). Some items even fell on the floor. Left it all in a messy pile after barely looking at it. Seemed peeved I wanted to refold things before I put them back in my bag. Had a bit of costume jewelry and the buyer said he wouldn't look because the store was only buying precious metals/fine jewelry now (!?). Walked away with some cash but will not be back. Understand they can't buy everything but at the very least they can train their staff better. The most unpleasant and rude employees at any of the buy-sell-trade stores in NYC. Hoping the buyer was just a dud/having a bad day. read more

No doubt staff are very particular with their..."brand"? Yes that's the name of the game but. These cute kids all trying to be the next Alexander McQueen or who act like their job is that important or miserable (in the scheme of things, come on). Some people really do want just simple, nice, modern things to wear, in good shape, and not at a ludicrous price point with stains and smells like half their stuff..but their staff are taking their job a biiiiit seriously with some of their selecting. Idiosyncratic, that is "le fashion". It's cute. But for real. Get rid of about 3/4 the crap you have in your store (it's not halloween chronically in NYC anymore; "normal" people work and live and need functional high quality clothing, and ESP winter clothing - at a low price...) STOP being a slave to the fashion industry standard and hating on 'basics' when they just simply work and would make many people happy who live here, and would sell very easily. Recycle. Let people sell things without judging them outwardly at first glance. Create an atmosphere like some of THEE BEST consignment stores I know of, which help regular people get a little cash when they need it, and help people who need necessary things, purchase them at a reasonable cost, recycled and in good shape/clean. Most simple classics last quite a long time. AND that....my dears...is true style. Like if you're going for a certain offbeat thing, then re-brand your business and make it known that you only want to cater to fashion kids who follow with a passion. No one needs "Unique" finds from the 80s with shit stains on them. make it known you only want kids in there who wanna be suuuuuper cool and "aware" with their fashion finds cuz they're so unique. Otherwise...you are a dingey overpriced smelly crowded regular run of the mill (hypocritical) used and consignment goods store, with a GIANT chip on their shoulder. read more

Worst. Customer. Service. Ever. Whenever I head to the city, I always stop at Beacon, Buffalo Exchange and Crossroad for thrifting. Today, I stopped by Beacons before heading up to the other shops. It was a busy Saturday, but I tried to follow protocol without having the sales associate reach out and say, "hey we have to check in your bags!" I stood by the register and after a couple of minutes of not being attended to, my boyfriend says, "hey may you check in our bags?" The cashier completely ignores us and doesn't even turn to say, "hey, I'll assist you guys in a moment." I work in the hospitality business and worked retail, so despite being under pressure, you must know how to multitask. The worker continues to ignore us so my boyfriend looks puzzled at me and goes, "I'm sure I said that loud enough." The worker clearly looks agitated and says "I heard you but can't you see I'm busy???" So he grabs my bag and shoves it in a cubby to check in. My boyfriend retorts, "you can at least ACKNOWLEDGE us," in which the worker takes the key to hold our items and throws it at me, as it slides off the table and onto the floor. We approach the manager about it who said "it's been a busy day." She ended the conversation by providing us with an email and saying, "what do you want me to do about it?" Worst. Customer. Service. Ever. I wish I could give this location Beacon's 0 stars. You get a cleaner clothes and more vibrant customer service at the Beacon's in Brooklyn! PS -- At least be a manager Claire and reprimand your employees when they're out of line. read more

Do not sell your clothes to Beacon's Closet. I dropped off gently used and several never worn clothing and other items today, including Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Todds, Gucci, JCrew, French Connection among others. I dropped off about 50 items, and because I was in a time crunch, decided to drop them off instead of staying while the staff went through and I elected to donate whatever they did not want to take. About 10-15 minutes after I left the store, I received a text saying that they were not able to accept any of my items and that all would be donated. I called to ask for further explanation, as it seemed that the staff member who helped me didn't even take the time to look through my items. The woman I spoke with was pleasant enough over the phone and I appreciated that she went down to the donation area to give the bags a second look. But she called me back a few minutes later, gave me what sounded like a boilerplate explanation that the store has too much inventory and that they didn't need anything I had. In my bags were everything from spring/summer (dresses, blouses, new with tags bathing suits) to fall/winter (genuine fur vest, cashmere sweaters), elegant to sportswear, hats, bags, and tons of styles of men's shoes. I found it very hard to believe that not a single item could, or would, be sold. If it was an issue of over inventory, they should have informed me that they were not accepting much of anything when I dropped off the clothes in the first instance, and I would have chosen to go elsewhere, or I would have donated the clothing to a non-profit that I trust would put them to good use. I never write reviews, but I feel quite taken advantage of and wanted to warn others of my experience. read more

Lol why have staff running the fitting rooms if you have to hang the clothes before bringing them back, bring the count door tag back and have to endure people with smug shitty attitudes. Its polite to hang clothes before giving them back....having worked in retail I always thanked people who did, but its kind of rude to ask people to do this after you've escorted them to the fitting room. You work in customer service... like, get over yourself. Its kind of annoying that there aren't more than two mirrors in store too. I get they want people to try on clothes in the fitting room but there is always a line. Overall, I'd skip this place and look for better thrift stores in Manhattan. read more

Wow! Well, this location is a lot fancier than the Williamsburg location. Chandeliers! Pretty! The store is spacious, bright and clean. They also have definitely tailored the merchandise selection to the local patronage - it's art students from Parsons here, rather than ugly-is-ironic hipsters. There was actually a lot of cool and interesting stuff for sale here, with people who were actually dressed impressively shopping for it. 3 stars instead of 4 because I didn't actually find anything I wanted. I seriously considered a heavily beaded and sequined purple jacket for $15. (It was lovely, I swear!) but decided against going through the effort to handwash or dry clean the thing every time I wore it. But the pair of metallic gold Prada riding boots for $99. would have been mine in a heartbeat - if they weren't a size and a half too small. read more

I've been here a couple of times; before the 'rona and now that we're a few months into it. Pre-'rona, I'd gone one evening after work and it was packed! Understandably so! They have a lotta cute stuff. Went a couple of days ago and, fortunately, they only allow a small number of people inside at a time. I haven't tried to sell/donate/whatever any clothing there so I can't speak on that. But if you just want some pieces, jewelry or accessories that you might not be able to find anywhere else, at discount prices...that's been worn by someone else but it still in good condition, give Beacon's a shot. During my recent visit, I saw a Botkier Chrystie bag for only $54, in prime condition! Beacon's is definitely at the top of my thrifting spots. read more

I hope to give advice to other sellers. I brought a variety of summer and fall items today (Aug 5) and was told up front that they were only buying best of summer and best of fall since it's that in-between time. I thought I'd have some takers out of 40-50. I had some a variety of men's and women's clothing and brands like: madewell, jcrew, banana, tailor stitch, and a few other items from smaller "craft" USA makers. So - these brands don't necessarily mean the store won't take you items, but it's not what they're looking for on a consistent basis. BC is looking for unique, quirky, high-end and vintage - so my clothes didn't work out, they took 2 pairs of selvedge denim out of my 40-50 items. Like I saw someone buying a bedazzled bra! They're not looking for office-wear or preppy casual (as a general rule of thumb). This is by no-means negative on the store or staff, I guess I hadn't done my research but also letting other sellers know what they are looking for to save you time. I found all of the staff to be friendly, especially the guy buying from me. He may have felt bad, but he was kind enough to look through everything even though it was pretty clear my clothes weren't a fit for how they buy. He gave me a few tips for trying to sell elsewhere where our preppier clothes would have a better chance, so I really appreciated this because it was good advice (as Buffalo Exchange did take my BR, jcrew, madewell, etc...). I went soon after opening and waited 5-10 min. I wouldn't bat an eye over 30 minutes or less because Buffalo Exchange is easily an hour on weekends, minimum. So I hope this helps any future sellers and I also am appreciative that my buyer gave me advice and didn't make me feel awkward for having 2 bags of clothes they wouldn't take! read more
