One of the best boxing classes in Boston! John and Kaleigh are both fantastic and kind coaches and do an excellent job at teaching boxing fundamentals. Expect 10 minutes of warm up cardio, 40 minutes of partner mitt work and a short cool down. The class is great for both beginners and experienced boxers. I went to back bay boxing one time without ever putting boxing gloves on before and was immediately hooked. Signed up for a membership the next day! Now, this isn't a kick boxing class or some sort of girlie gym class or boot camp. This is a BOXING class and it is addicting. Very rarely do I feel compelled to write a review for an EXERCISE CLASS, but this class was like no other. First, John owns and runs the studio so you are truly supporting a local business. Secondly, the class was so intense and a full body workout, however it was manageable and even fun for a novice (and a not super in shape novice, to be honest) like me! Truly a no-frills class, but you're able to focus on the work out rather than all the "extras" this way. The instructor walks around correcting your technique, without being scary at all. But, you are sweating and killing the workout, with lots of help from the more experienced boxers (although I felt bad that I was new and couldn't support the more experienced boxers as well as they probably were used to!) Thankfully partners rotate so that the super intense people hopefully can get a more experienced partner at some point. I will be returning - even though I felt like the worst one in the class, it's truly one of those classes that makes you want to be better and better. Thanks, John! read more

I bought a $25 one-class the day before (meaning Friday the 22nd), arrived at class twenty minutes before it started, and then proceeded to have my ass handed to me in a variety of cuisines and styles for an hour. Even writing this, my fingers are twitching. I don't think I've ever had my back hurt so much from getting my posture kicked straight, and this is coming from someone who needed surgery to fix her scoliosis. John (the instructor) was amazing. He helped me do the hand wraps seeing as I was a first-timer to his gym (yes, it's his gym, and yes, he does bark out fast-paced instructions in a gleeful manner for a solid hour). The hand wraps were $10, so I ended up paying only $35 for a solid round of ass-kicking and exercise. We started with cardio. And what a goddamn cardio session it was. Now, I'm not the most active or in-shape person ever. I didn't even know what "mountain climbers" or burpees were before stepping in his class, but I learned quick. I had to because he made us do what felt like an endless amount of reps in which we moved from jumping jacks, jump ropes, push ups, burpees, squats, and mountain climbers in a never ending hamster wheel of sweat and internal screaming. But he's great. He helped me fix my posture, adjust my poses, and even told me that I was hyperextending my elbows just by catching a glimpse of my quivering biceps. I now know not to hyperextend my elbows, blessed be. By the time we moved onto boxing technique, I was dripping sweat and so out of breath that I saw my dead grandma calling me home. Take what you will from that. He separated the newbies from the more experienced, which was great because it meant that we (the jiggly armed newbies) got more specialized instruction and help. Now I'll admit that I was most out of shape and inexperienced there. I blame it on the fact that I find a certain perverse enjoyment in doing typical suburban housewife activities, such as pilates and yoga, but it's also due to the fact that the Kenmore Dunkin Donuts staff know me by name and preferred donut. There's no real shame in admitting that, and if you think that your weight or out of shape-ness will be an issue for you here, know that no one cares. Trust me, I had to take a brief five minute break (and was the only one to do so, too) in the middle of boxing techniques portion because I was feeling vomit rise in my throat, but just get back in and keep going once the gorge is down. And at other gyms where the instructor will call time at five minutes before the end of class so that you can cool down, I want you to know that John will keep going to the last second. If there's a class right after, he'll just line them up and repeat the process again. I am definitely coming back here. I've never been so pushed in my life, and frankly, it was just a wonderful work out. So please come out and have your ass kicked to bloody Venus. I don't want to be the only fool who keeps persisting in the face of a flying jab. read more

Amazing class! We had 13 people in total and while the space isn't fancy, it's perfect for what we need. You go in and John welcomes you immediately. There's an area to put your jackets and bags. Then you get your wraps on and start. I took the boot camp class on Saturday morning and it was amazing. 20 (hard) minutes of cardio that includes jump rope, burpees, squats and jumping jacks. Then, we spent the next 30 minutes doing partner work. John came around to each person to make sure our stances were correct. He separated the new people (me and some others) with more experienced people...and gave us tutorials. Despite being in a class, there was tons of personal one on one coaching. Afterwards, we spent the last 10 minutes using the punching bags. We still got a lot of personal attention. Having been to tons of other boxing gyms (Overthrow, Title & Everbody Fights), I feel like I got the most out of this class. I will definitely be back! Go! You won't regret it! read more

This is a great class. I wasn't very excited to go my first time as I had done kick boxing before and hated it because I though people were there to just be cool. I loved my first boxing class here. John was awesome and gave a lot of one-on-one help, which was great since I'm a boxing novice. He made sure I had the fundamentals down, which made the class a lot easier to manage. My class overall was really great- small, mostly women, really supportive and willing to stop and help me get better (be it by teaching me to wrap my hands or get down a combo I missed) throughout the class. The split between drills and cardio stuff (jumping rope, burpees, push-ups) was also really great so that just when you feel like you're reaching your limit, you switch to something else and get that motivation back. It was an intense, full-body workout that made me feel like I could keep up with the class despite the work being difficult. read more

Back Bay Boxing is GREAT. I've been boxing for years and recently moved to Cambridge, and this is the most legit spot I've tried. It's pretty hard to find, a basement below the pilates place with no sign. The workout is exhausting- it's mostly free rounds of hitting pads with a partner, with some cardio and HIIT stuff in the beginning. As with any boxing, the workout is only as good as your partner, but most of the people knew what they were doing and the owner walks around helping people and holding rounds for everyone. I love that its a real boxing class, not some sort of cardio kickboxing or soulcycle for boxing. Be warned, it's hot and sweaty and there aren't towels, water, showers, etc. You need your own wraps. I do wish there was a water cooler- my first class I finished all the water I brought in the first 20 minutes and was super dehydrated by the end, and I ended up staggering down Newbury looking for a spot to buy water like a crazy person. Unfortunately I don't live all that close, otherwise I'd definitely join, but I'll keep doing drop ins whenever I'm in the area! read more

John is a fantastic instructor and vastly helped my friend improve their technique and helped me learn for the first time. He even taught me how to wrap my hands properly before the class started. He really tailors his advice to each individual and somehow watches everyone at once! It had been awhile since I exercised consistently and he made me excited to train harder than ever! I walked away 2-3 times a week with muscles screaming and enjoyed every second of it and saw improvement quickly. I tried a couple other boxing places in the area and this is by far the best, again because John gives such great and specific advice.
