This is a beautiful spot for personal and professional retreats alike. The natural scenery is an excellent outlet to the hustling surrounding city. From the concrete jungle to these fields of forest, no matter where you're from, Bear Mountain is a nice and relaxing hike away. The bear Mountain Inn is an amazing historic in that is nestled along the Hudson Valley is most scenic area. One of the major attractions in the whole Northeast, it sits perched high along the Hudson River over looking the bear mountain bridge. In the shadow of Perkins Point, this Historic Landmark offers Five star amenities. Whatever you do make sure you catch the Sunday brunch. Just stayed 2 nights at the bear mountain inn, and I gotta say, I'm not going back. There were a few good things, hence why it's not a 1 star (gotta be fair), but overall it was miserable. The good: The inn itself was cool looking both inside and out (sans the construction going just outside) and the surrounding area was gorgeous. Also I didn't have much dealings with the staff but what I did have, they were very polite and pleasant. The concept behind the bear mountain inn is a really cool concept... The bad: ...but in execution it failed. We stayed in one of the stone cottages. You park your car in front of the cottage, but the entrance is literally on the other side, so walking to the "front" when it's pitch black (no lights after you leave your car) and it's 20 degrees, no fun, ESPECIALLY when you are carrying luggage. Once inside, there are six guest rooms within the cottage (all have key cards so no security issues there), but it's just a bed, tv and bathroom. No chairs, desk or anything you find in even the cheapest Days Inn. They are in the common room, which has only 2 cushioned chairs and 4 kitchen chairs and one small table. If you want privacy, forget it. If you want to use it when someone else is there, forget it. Also the microwave and tiny fridge is communal. I was a nervous wreck leaving leftovers in the fridge not knowing who is messing with them. They also have a fireplace you can set up with a single log. That in itself is fine and the concept is cool...until one of the house guests did and all the smoke poured into the cottage, filling our room (and the rest of the cottage) with smoke, making our room uninhabitable for about 2 hours and all my clothes smelled like smoke (big problem for my suits.). I have also slept on many hotel beds of all qualities and firmness levels...never have I ended up with a tweaked back after a night. And I slept on a futon for two years at one point in my life. Worst night sleep I've had in a LONG time. (Granted it didn't help with the roomies being loud in the common area half the night with zero sound proofing). They also have "high speed" WiFi. That is straight up false advertising. The speed with less then 1 mbps download and upload...when it worked at all. You try to watch a YouTube video at 144p, and it could take several minutes to load a 30 second video but the WiFi would cut out completely randomly and not even register on my devices (iPhone 8S and iPad Air 2). So getting any work done or enjoying your favorite show if not downloaded ahead of time is out of the question since you are in a valley with next to no cell signal (I am using Verizon). Then there's the thermostat. One. ONE!!! It's in the common room and shared with all the guests. Needless to say that can and did cause major issues. The rest of the amenities were "meh". Standard or slightly below standard. They also have rooms in a larger lodge and at the inn itself which may be a better experience, but my review is based only on the stone cottage room and the universal items. read more

We decided to stay here to do a lot of hiking for a long weekend. The park and scenic views were absolutely incredible and it was evident why this is referred to as the crown jewel of the NYS park system. Due to coronavirus though, there were several comfort features that were unavailable that would have been nice to have. First off the breakfast provide was healthy, but small with limited options. I understand that this is to limit cross contamination, but everyone is pouring their own coffee from the same dispenser so why couldn't we still have a regular continental breakfast. We also had booked a room in the more remote overlook lodge but upon arrival had been "upgraded" to a room in the main inn. The park is rightfully extremely busy during the day and our room was adjoined to an area where customers waited for their spa services. In the overlook lodge we might have had more peace and quiet after hiking 10+ miles per day. Overall though it was a nice hotel with higher end facilities. The room and bed were comfortable, though I wish there were more blankets and the chair didn't have a cheap slip cover on it (just replace the chair). The hikers cafe also had limited hours which was disappointing and the restaurant was closed completely due to Covid. I had really looked forward to eating their food unfortunately. read more

I was here for a wedding of two friends. The wedding was beautiful and so much fun. But the facilities left a lot to be desired. THE BAD: --When I called to book, they said I had gotten one of the last rooms available, in the "stone cottages." Cool. I looked at the website briefly and everything seemed close enough. Although I realized there were three separate lodging areas (the Inn itself, the Overlook Lodge, and the stone cottages) I didn't realize that the Inn and the Cottages were separated by almost a mile. Fine during the day, but at night? In the dark? I was surprised they didn't offer a post-event shuttle service, and didn't drink during the reception because I was too afraid about our dark walk back home. Eventually, we got a ride with another guest, but they HAD been drinking ... so trying to decide between riding with someone who's clearly tipsy and a dark walk in the woods? Not cool. --Lack of hospitality. I get that the Inn doesn't want people traipsing through the hotel to use the bathroom if they're just day visitors, but they were snotty to us when we needed the facilities right before the wedding. What did they want us to do, run the mile back up to our cottage? Also, when we were leaving, we asked the front desk about what taxi they recommended to pick us up and bring us to the train station--they told us to "look one up on our phones." --Lack of food options. The cafe on premises is overpriced and seems to have odd hours. We got there at 3 and the cafe only had, like, chips ... and the wedding wasn't 'til 7. Luckily, we found vending machines near the parking lot. --Not well lit. I get that it's rustic, but I feel a warning--and maybe a flashlight--would be great to provide to guests of the Stone Cottages. They aren't well lit and a lot of the other guests and us had trouble finding our exact cottage. In the dark, they all look the same, and since I was wearing heels, I was freaked about tripping over a root and twisting my ankle. THE GOOD: --Food at the wedding was delicious. Great hors d'ouevres, fresh main courses, and seamless service. --For the lack of general hospitality, the individuals we met who worked there were terrific. One woman who worked at the restaurant (I think) gave us a ride down the hill from the Stone Cottages when she saw I was trying to hike in heels. Nice. --Beautiful setting. The wedding was absolutely gorgeous, and I loved the view from the Stone Cottage porch--it felt like I was at camp! --Free coffee in the Stone Cottage common area. So these rooms are six or so (small) rooms surrounding a common area that has a fireplace. It was nice to wake up, make coffee, and sit on the porch and look at the lake. Overall, I felt this place has so much potential and is a great setting for a wedding. It was just the minor lapses that really rubbed me the wrong way. If you decide to have an event here, plan ahead: Give your guests welcome bags/kits that include snacks, little flashlights, and need-to-know info. Also, consider renting a party bus or shuttle van to transport folks back to the cottages. It's a pain in the ass, but would definitely ease guest's minds. read more

Review is for the Stone Cottage. My first time at Bear Mountain was in the summer of 2014 for an outdoor BBQ and a 2 hour hike. The park was vast with plenty of room to roam and explore- an enjoyable outdoor experience. The second time I decided to purchase a Groupon deal for 2 nights in November. The exact wording of the deal was 'Bear Mountain Inn/Overlook Lodge Stone Cottage (queen bed)'. I assumed the cottage was in the same location as the Inn, but it turns out the Bear Mountain Inn, Overlook Lodge, and the Stone Cottage are 3 separate accommodation locations. To get to Bear Mountain we took the Short Line Coach bus for $27 round-trip. Bear Mountain Inn is the main lodging area and hub of the park with a deluxe lobby flaunting a rustic wooden interior, couches to sit and rest, Hiker's Cafe for snacks and drinks, Gift Shop, and 1915 restaurant on the second floor. It's also known to have weddings and special events throughout the seasons. The Overlook Lodge is located north of Bear Mountain Inn, a 20 minute walk or 3 minute car ride (no shuttle bus available) on top of the lake displaying a breathtaking overview of the lake and cities over the horizon. Literally the Overlook Lodge. The lobby has a warm rustic presence similar to the Bear Mountain Inn with tables and couches, and a selection of board games and books for guests. More so a large multifamily living room than an Inn lobby. We spent many hours in the afternoon reading here sipping on endless cups of coffee and frequently stepping out in the patio to soak in the majestic view. The Stone Cottages, 5 minute walk south of the Overlook Lodge, consists of 4 rustic cottages. We stayed in the Beaver Cottage which has a living room area- fireplace with no firewood (firewood is for sale at the Overlook Lodge or outside granted you have an axe), empty pantry, microwave, mini refrigerator, and a coffee machine with coffee packages. No stove, oven, pots, pans, or silverware. There are 6 rooms in a cottage. We stayed in a room with a queen size bed, outdated TV with satellite service, 2 lamps, overhead light, and a restroom with clean towels, mini bottle shampoo, conditioner, lotion and several bars of soap. Maid service is available like that of a hotel. Just have to remember to put the sign on the door handle. Note the thermostat is in the living room and controls the temperature of the whole cottage, not each individual room. I set the temperature at 71, but when I woke up in the morning the cottage was mildly cold and it looked like someone changed it to 68. There is no filtered water. The tap water is fine to drink. We drank nothing but tap water for 3 days and did not suffer from illness or e. coli. It's fresh! Wifi is available in the Inn and Lodge, but not the cottages. I had 1 bar on 3G with Verizon and could sufficiently make calls and check e-mail. I wouldn't recommend you to spend too much time with technology though. There are plenty more things to do. There are no restaurants within walking distance from the cottage aside from the 1915 restaurant which is quite expensive $30/each for dinner and opened on certain days. Fortunately we brought meat and veggies for sandwiches, fruits, and snacks. I suggest you bring pre-prepared food with silverware and napkins if you do not have a car, but if not, other options are available. We ordered delivery from the recommendation of the front desk, linguine with clams from Tony's Pizzeria which came in 30 minutes. I'm sure there are more restaurants that deliver. Continental Breakfast is included for guests in the Inn and Overlook Lodge. The Overlook Lodge has variety of muffins, one serving cereal boxes (Corn Pops, Cheerios, Frosted Flakes) with milk, Quakers oatmeal (Original, Apple Cinnamon, Sugar Cinnamon) with hot water, regular and decaf coffee, tea, and orange juice. The Inn has all the above plus make-it-yourself waffles, Yoplait fat-free yogurt in raspberry and blueberry, and green and orange melon and pineapple. We ate muffins and coffee at the Overlook Lodge then ate yogurt and fruits at the Inn. All guests have access to both areas, as so I believe. There are numerous hiking trails with different levels of difficulty. We started with the Perkins Memorial Tower trail and an hour into it we spotted a deer which was quite enchanting. The fall foliage was grandiose like walking through heaven. If I can give zero stars, I would. This place is really creepy, rustic, old, and feels like you're in a horror movie with someone waiting to murder you. My boyfriend and I reserved the cottage for 2 nights. Upon check-in at the main lobby, which is a 2 min. drive from the cottage, the eery feeling reminded me of Stephen King's The Shining. As we arrived to our cottage, it's 4 rooms with a shared common area. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up when I looked at our room. If you are claustrophobic, this place is not for you. The room was tiny with a 1900's television set. Here are the list of things that creeped me out: 1. hand prints on the walls above the windows 2. it is completely dark at 8pm and the two lamp posts outside the cottage does not work 3. there is no landline phone...how are you supposed to dial 911 in an emergency? by the way, good luck getting reception on your cell I had to check the windows to see if I can escape the room if I needed to. After dinner, we arrived back to the cottage and our car was the only car there. By now, I don't even want to be here. We both decided the best thing to do is leave and check out immediately. We grabbed all of our belongings and left. Don't stay here. read more

First off, let me just say that there should be a separate entry for the Overlook Lodge and the Bear Mountain Inn. They are completely separate hotels, on opposite sides of the lake, and seem to have little or nothing to do with one another aside from the administration. My girlfriend and I are locals but we decided it would be fun to spend a day hiking at Bear Mountain and then stay at the Overlook Lodge, just for the heck of it. It's a great location, and the amenities are actually very nice for the money. Comfortable beds, nice bathrooms with good toiletries, refrigerator, coffee maker, alarm clock with a plug for an iPhone... everything seemed clean and functional and up-to-date. The lobby is cozy, with a big fireplace and lots of rustic furniture. Pretty good continental breakfast in the morning, too. For all of that, I really want to give it 4 stars. However, there were some drawbacks. I had requested a room with a view. We arrived at 1pm and were told our room was being cleaned and we should come back at 3, so we did. By sheer coincidence, we returned just as the girl at the front desk was telling another guest "Well, we do have one last room with a view of the lake, I could switch yours". I just had to butt in and make sure she wasn't giving our room away... and, sure enough, she was! So after coming in early and being sent away, we almost lost our room. Ridiculous. Unfortunately, it turned out that we might have been better off letting that other guest swipe our room. They stuck us in room 107, possibly the worst room in the joint. It's the very first room off the lobby, and all day and night we were subjected to the noise of shouted conversations, high heels on the stone lobby floor, and wood being stacked next to the fireplace on the other side of our wall. Seemed like they might have been building a combination bowling alley and swimming pool above our heads, too, for all the water noises and banging around. The room was also too hot (possibly because of the aforementioned fireplace next door) even though our thermostat was off and the heater wasn't running at all. This was the last weekend of February, with severely icy winds whipping by outside, and we couldn't cool off. Those issues with the service, the noise, and the temperature would normally be enough for me to give a hotel a 1-star rating and a scathing review. If I were visiting from out of state, I just might have. For me, though, I think the charm and location of the Overlook overpowers the annoyances. Enough to give it one more try, at least. And next time I'll certainly be willing to sacrifice the view of the lake in exchange for a second-floor room that's as far away from the lobby as possible. read more

I love the rustic feel of the Bear Mountain Inn, both inside the Inn itself and the beautiful scenery outside. So much so that my husband and I chose to get married there in 2013 after they went through some heavy renovations (I never saw the venue pre-renovation). We had a beautiful October wedding and for the most part, it went off without a hitch! A little shaky when scheduling rooms for guests, but other than that we were very pleased. We decided to spend our 2 year anniversary at the Inn this past weekend. We even stayed in the same suite as we did on our wedding day (the big bridal suite). While it was wonderful to be there and reminisce, I did make note of a few areas that I would love to see improved. First - they need better management, period. This applies to both the Inn and the 1915 Restaurant. You can tell that there is a lack of organization in general from checking in to simply trying to make a dinner reservation. Everyone seems like they're scrambling at all times (and it really wasn't that busy). In fact, I tried to call in advance a few times to get us a dinner reservation and was told by the front desk to just "leave a voicemail" bc no one answered the phone at the restaurant. Upon arrival at the hotel we stopped by the restaurant just to confirm we had a reservation and, unsurprisingly, we didn't! In fact, the man who appeared to be the manager said "oh we get tons of voicemails" as in, they never check them. Well, maybe if you have someone answering your phone, you would have less of them! Just a thought. Didn't appreciate that response. Our suite was very nice, it's pretty much the nicest room you can book there, but I felt it could've been cleaner. Things like not having much toilet paper left on the roll in both bathrooms was a clear indication that some key things were missed during the clean up. We booked a massage a the Spa, which is just okay. It's a small spot, no locker rooms to change into robes or anything. You're basically in and out for whatever services you receive. And finally, our stay included complimentary breakfast the next day in the restaurant. The food options were lackluster to say the least. They had waffles that appeared to be Ego frozen style, overcooked eggs, and absolutely NO fruit. Not one piece of fruit. Not to mention, they clearly didn't clean the restaurant after dinner the night before and there was food/garbage all over the place. We had breakfast around 9am....way past the time when that should've been cleaned up! It was disgusting. I think, with better management, this place could really be a gem. Sadly, we probably won't come back for a similar experience in the future until they get their act together. read more

Let me start by saying this . . . If ever I had to get re-married, and if that wedding had to take place in New York, then I think this is where I would want that wedding to take place. No faux fancy wedding / catering halls for me. The ambiance here is very subtle and relaxed, the view is wonderful from any of the catering facilities many windows which overlook Bear Mountain State Park -- especially beautiful during the fall season when it is brisk and colorful outside and when they have roaring fires in their huge fireplaces. The scent throughout the lodge is fantastic. And for those of you who appreciate old sturdy architecture, read the following snipet taken from the Bear Montain Inn's website regarding the construction of this nearly 100 year old beauty: "In 1915 park employees crafted the two story stone Bear Mountain Inn using native materials, found on site. On the interior, heavy chestnut log posts and beams supported large stone fireplaces, rustic timber framing, paneling and ceilings, and light fixtures fabricated of native birch and hand-hammered iron. " We went to a wedding here a few years back and I was immediately taken by the huge fireplaces and the sheer awesomeness of the huge lodge. The place is constructed primarily of wood and stone which gives this place character, charm, warmth and a feeling of being rustic. The ceremony was held just off of the banquet room -- the chupa was constructed of birch branches -- a very beautiful touch that fit right in with the surroudings. The catering facilities / banquet room was a nice size and seems to have fit approximately 150 guests comfortably. The food was good as a I recall, they laid everything out beautifully. The presentation was immaculate, and the view from large windows inside the banquet room was breathtaking. They had plenty of room for dancing and mingling throughout the evening. read more

We stayed in the overlook lodge as we live about an hour south and didn't want to worry about driving home after a hike & dinner. If you're okay with "roughing it" then this place will do the job, as it was decently clean, has some nice amenities like a fridge and keurig, but I would not stay here again. The hallways smelled AWFUL, I cannot even begin to figure out the odor, maybe a dead mouse in the wall?? Other reviewers cited large wedding parties that kept them up all night, as we were well outside of wedding season I didn't see this being a problem, but we had guests on both sides of us up at all hours. Luckily the hike wore me out enough where I ended up falling asleep, but woke up early to slamming doors and chatter in the hallway as the doors / walls seem to be paper thin. We went to the free continental breakfast at the main lodge, which was barely edible - I mean it's free so I didn't expect too much, but I can now understand all the horrible reviews for the restaurant, if that's what they're serving for breakfast. Even for free, we pecked at it and left. Also, no one informed us that upon checking in that you have to check into the main lodge, which cannot be done until 3pm. We showed up to the lodge very confused at 1:00 thinking we could drop our things at the desk until our room was ready. For $140 / night I would rather drive the hour back home, but if you're left with no other option it's definitely doable just for a bed to sleep in. Also there is a very nice fireplace and chairs in the lobby area where people congregated to drink wine at night and sit around. Not for me, but for some it might be okay for a night or two. I just couldn't get past the smells and the paper thin walls, NOT relaxing. read more

Review is for Restaurant 1915 only..Save your $$!!!!!!!!!!! This is such a gorgeous venue but the so called restaurant is sorely lacking in every aspect. First off I noticed there was nobody working in this HUGE place over the age of 23. Went on a Sunday morning early for the buffet. I was actually looking for the buffet because there were approximately 4 hot items, some muffins, and a nice looking fruit salad...ok..that's it for $20. Hot food included bacon, sausage, potatoes, and eggs. I was willing to keep my mouth shut as to not upset the others in my party until I ate the eggs. There is nothing worse than cold scrambled eggs that I think might have been powdered. Our waitress promptly apologized and took that off the bill when she stopped by. She was sweet but I feel she was not surprised by the complaint. Burgers looked great and those lucky people enjoyed them! I ordered the wild mushroom boursin cheese frittata..sounds good right? We used Bear Mountain for our rehearsal dinner and would not recommend it to ANYONE. We had a terrible experience with them and the service aspect was a complete nightmare. We were originally drawn to Bear Mountain due to the spectacular natural setting and the really cool carousel room. From the beginning, it was difficult to get information from them, and we were frequently told different information by different people. Even worse, sometimes one person would promise us something and then months later, someone else would claim there was no record. One of the appeals of Bear Mountain was that there was a large number of lodging options for our guests. We reserved 4 of their stone cottages for our guests, each sleeping about 12 people. However as our guests began calling to make reservations, we discovered that Bear Mountain had given away two of the cottages to another wedding party! To make matters worse, on the day before our wedding as our friends starting checking in, my fiance discovered that they had rearranged the rooms and were putting random people in the cottages and had relocated our friends to the (much less attractive) main lodge! It was a total disaster and really stressful and the staff were completely incompetent in dealing with the problem. As for the rehearsal dinner, the staff was extremely inflexible and unable to accommodate basic requests. They gave incorrect price estimates, and seemed unable to recalculate once we changed options. They were unresponsive and unhelpful throughout the process. Worst of all, on the night of the dinner, my mother-in-law showed up early and discovered that they had set up the entire room wrong, failed to plate the salads and changed the menu without consulting her! In her dress and heels, she and her husband had to move the tables themselves and try to deal with the mess. The entire experience was a disaster and I would say to anyone considering Bear Mountain for ANY event to stay away and find somewhere else. It may be pretty spot, but it's a terrible place to hold an event. read more

Rooms are super tough to navigate due to size and layout, very outdated, no frills what so ever (not even a laundry bag provided nor shampoo), unaccommodating staff, no food on site, non working TVs. The biggest problem I had with our stay was what we received with the "Romance Package". I did not know about this package when I booked our room back in September, but found it on the website and had it added to our reservation about 3-4 days before our scheduled stay. The website clearly states that the package includes "sparkling wine and chocolate covered strawberries in the room", and "late check out (when available)." Upon our arrival we found the champagne in the fridge, but no strawberries. Instead, a couple of pre-packaged $5 cookies and a bag of espresso beans. When I asked the person at the front desk she explained that since the restaurant was closed due to COVID, the strawberries were replaced with the cookies and beans. While I completely understand the need to adapt because of COVID, it was very frustrating this this change was not explained to me when I asked to have the package added. Right now the website still states that the chocolate covered strawberries are included, even though it also states the restaurant is closed. In my opinion the cookies and beans were NOT an acceptable replacement for the strawberries, and I would not have paid for the Romance Package had I known about the switch. Additionally, when I asked about late checkout after we got thereI was told it would be 11:30 - just 30 minutes later than standard checkout. Again, that would not have been a big enough difference for me to justify buying the Romance Package had I known ahead of time. Other than being disappointed in the package, however, we were otherwise VERY satisfied with our room and overall experience. read more

Horrible. Disorganized. They don't have a very good system. And the lodge and suites and building are scattered all over the place. They don't have anyone managing the lodge at night instead they post a sign and tell you to go to the inn. Room=quaint. They look nice and are fairly clean until you pull the cover of the bed and find hair left all over the bed. The tubs are small and look unclean but they are just old. The ac/heating unit is loud and sounds like it's raining out side. Restaurant= Horrible!!! The website boast that they have this huge facility but they don't. It is a small room In the back. It has a great view of the lake but they only have two servers who are so frustrated that they are down right rude. I know you people are overwhelmed but you can still use better customer service. The front desk gave us a menu and it wasn't the same as the one they were offering. It was very LIMITED! Food is subpar. You wait FOREVER for a little amount of food that you could get else where for cheaper and better quality. Scenery- beautiful. This location is amazing but that is the only saving grace for this place. Continental breakfast-a joke. Costco pastries, muffins, some orange juice, old coffee, a self service waffle maker and cereal cartons. Plus this is located at the main faculty on the second floor. It also starts at 7 am so it doesn't help those traveling super early. Parking/road- unpacked, unmarked and unclear. If you are staying here in order to do anything for West Point please find a different location. Your time and money could be better spent else where. read more

The electronic lock on our door stopped working -- it had run out of battery -- and it took them over two hours to find the charger and get it open for us. Thankfully they comped the room for us. Unfortunately, we also brought home bed bugs, so it ended up being a very expensive one night stay indeed in the end. read more

Had a birthday party for my teenage grandson. Made reservations for 15 for their Sunday brunch Reservations were for 1 pm. We weren't seated until 1:40. I had to keep Asking the hostess when our table would be ready All of us just kept milling around the front desk ( only three chairs available). My grandson found a lovely lounge area adjacent to the dining room! We were never offered that lounge to sit in while we waited ! We had elderly people with canes who were never offered a chair When we were finally seated the service was incredibly slow and disjointed. Peoples meals were served at different times. Omelet was served with no garnish or fruit just lumped on a plate The lucky ones were the folks who had the buffet! They didn't have to wait It took three attempts to get a refill of coffee and again chasing the servers asking for milk coffee etc And because we were seated so late, they started cleaning up all around us before we were finished! Sweeping and mopping the floor while we were still eating ! Bottom line : scenery was awesome ! Dining room rustic with beautiful fireplace! They need a professional manager for a restaurant of that size! One who understands the restaurant business! And a well trained staff for starters I hope they get their act together ! I am not sure still how i feel about our stay so i will just give the facts and let you decide. We chose to stay here for a girls wknd for our friends bday. Recently we had come here for ice skating, dinner and drinks just before christmas and it was so nice we figured a little wknd getaway close to home (cortlandt manor) would be lovely. For the four of us to stay it was about $60 pp for one night including a $100 spa credit. Great! We booked dinner reservations and spa appts. Yay! Our room was at the Overlook lodge up the winding hill. A bit far removed and "Shining-esc" but very rustic and quiet. There was no staff in our hilltop lodge so we were on our own except for the other guests. The views were breathtaking and the fireplace was lovely. Our room was updated decently w bear mt flair and the bathroom was really nice except there is no ceiling fan and the tub could use an overhaul. Fine. But the beds were comfy, room was clean and we had a small wet bar and fridge. The ice machine was a cooler at the bottom of the stairs- huh? But the ice was cold. Our spa appts for manicures only ($20 pp) were spread out over 2 hrs due to the busy wknd. Slightly annoying but we made it work despite the grouchy woman behind the desk. The nail techs were friendly and professional and didnt rush any of us. Now Dinner- We made reservations for 7:30 at the 1915 restaurant dining room. Although there were many open tables we were not sat until close to 8:00. Shrug. Our waitress came to our table promptly and asked if we wanted water. That was the last professional thing she did. 15 min later we got water. Another 15 came our drinks from the bar. Salads came out before the bread that we had to ask for- twice. Meals came out timely bc the food runner was great at his job. The food was so delicious: steak, cod, egglpant puttanesca. Prepared, executed, and served well and piping hot. Our waitress must not have had her hand in that. About 45 min after our food we were still waiting to get dessert menus and apertifes. We asked our waitress to bring the bday girl a small dessert w a candle and she seemed more than happy to do it. What we got was a candle that she came running out w 5 min after we started eating dessert, which she placed in our gentleman friends dessert instead of my girl friends dessert. Sigh. We just had to laugh at that point. After a nearly 3 hr dinner we payed the bill up at the bar bc we didnt want to wait for her to come back. Yes we tipped, but just 15%. On such a large dinner we would have liked to leave more. Oh well. We retreated back up to our lodge room and enjoyed the rest of the night there. The next morning we woke up to an unpredictable ice storm so the roadway down the hill was treachorous, unsalted and so horrible. After a minor fender bender w another guest's car we finally made it back down to the lodge only to have found out that our continental breakfast had passed and that the possibility of hot coffee was unclear at the front desk. Incompetant people working the desk and the system went down when we tried to check out. No words. With the nerve rattling road conditions and empty bellys we left bear mountain inn. We ended up getting a wonderful brkst in cold spring at the FOUNDRY. Thank goodness for the great staff there! We all had a good sense of humor about the wknd as it kept unfolding in new and challenging ways during our stay but it left us feeling weird. Would i go back.....? Hmmmm part of me says yes bc the things that were right were great but the the negatives were so disappointing. This place was renovated beautifully and has so much to offer. It would be the perfect place to escape to on a regular basis for someone like me who wants to get away ten min from home but the staff needs real training all around and they need to advertise better to get the numbers they hope for consistently bc it really is a nice place. Its worth giving it a try as long as you have a good sense of humor. Perhaps just an off wknd? Judging by the demeanor of the staff i assume not. Btw- I would like to give a big shout out to the feline outside of the overlook lodge who we named "Sam". Thanks for everything! You are so cute and affectionate! I can't believe how many scathing reviews I've read of this place! Manage your expectations just a little bit, be flexible, and you'll have a great visit. My girlfriend and I spent the night here for Valentine's Day and had a very positive experience. Here are a few things of note: - The morning of my reservation, the desk called to say there was a heating issue at the Overlook Lodge and that we might need to move to the Stone Cottages. For our trouble, they cut the rate down by more than 50%, without any fuss. We went to the Cottages (which were small, but perfectly nice) and then got alerted we were free to go back to the Lodge if we wanted, which was just up the hill. - The lodge was much roomier and nicer, with a truly *incredible* view, and they still let me keep my 50% discount! - Checking in was extremely easy, despite some ridiculous complaints I've read here. We went to the inn, got our keys, and followed a single road to our lodging. - The 1915 restaurant was spectacular. We are both food lovers, and we were thrilled. Not to mention, it's a gorgeous room. A few tiny criticisms: - Though the rooms were lovely and spacious enough, with beautiful views, the attention to detail is a bit skimpy. A clothes hook had fallen off the bathroom door, the patio outside the lodge wasn't swept, etc. - Service at the restaurant was a little slow, although very friendly and professional otherwise. - The heat in our room was on way too high, and I don't think there was a way to adjust it. We didn't both calling the front desk, but this is something to be warned of. There is definitely room for improvement here, from the management side of things. Everyone is friendly and helpful, but they could be a little more organized. Still, that little problem is NOT enough to ruin or even put much of dent in what is otherwise a wonderful establishment in a beautiful locale with a very special feel to it. Recommended! read more

I had dinner here once. This was about 5 years ago now. The meal (penne vodka) and the company were both good, but the dining room needed some updating. I think that the Inn has undergone some decent renovations since then, although I can't confirm this as I haven't been back since. As the previous poster noted, the Inn has a very rustic feel that contrasts well with the State Park lands that surround it. The main dining room, where large parties and receptions are held, is big and very nice, and the large stone fireplaces lend just the sort of ambiance that you'd expect from a rustic Inn. Despite the large space, it feels cozy. The best time to host an event here would be in the fall, when the landscape outside is changing colors and the air is crisp. You really do feel as though you're at some sort of rustic lodge without feeling as though you're in the middle of nowhere. The lawns around the Inn make a nice spot for pictures, and apparently there's a carousel somewhere on the grounds where pictures can be taken as well. The large windows in the reception room give a great view onto the State Park and add a nice feeling to any meal. I should add that the Bear Mountain Inn is managed by Inn Credible Caterers, a well-known local catering company that manages several other successful halls in the area. While I've never been to a wedding here, a former supervisor's daughter held her wedding reception at the Bear Mountain Inn. They were forced to change the date several times because her fiance was being shipped to Iraq, and from everything I heard the Inn's staff handled this very well. When she finally did get married, I was told that the reception was beautiful. All in all, I think the Bear Mountain Inn is a nice place. It's not incredibly fancy, but it has a nice ambiance and the State Park around it is beautiful. If you should find yourself hiking through Bear Mountain State Park, don't forget to stop at the Inn! read more

We stayed at the Bear Mountain Cottages along Hessian Lake. We were there with a large group for a wedding. We decided to book the cottage so that we could stay with friends and have a communal area to hang out in while there were no activities planned. What we didn't realize is that when booking, that they would host other non-wedding participants also in our cottage, so we had random people who were not participating in wedding festivities, that would have been good to know. When we arrived to check in, they told us that we couldn't check in until 3pm so they held our bags. That was good. However, when we did go to check in around 5pm and walked into the cottage, the communal area was not cleaned. There was actual rotting fruit under the sink where the trash can should have been and the fridge was full of rotting food from the previous guests. I called to have them clean it and they said they'd get right on it. The 2nd issue was there was some sort of alarm buzzing quite loudly right next to one of our rooms (looked like a carbon monoxide alarm), but it was loud. They fixed it once but then it went off again later around 2am! The continental breakfast was up where we checked in (about half a mile walk up hill on the road with no walking path). We got there an hour before the breakfast ended and they were out of milk, fruit and pastries. They had dry cereal. Ridiculous! There are no amenities to this place. The only good thing is the hiking (which is not clearly marked) and hiking alone is the only reason I gave two stars. We will never stay here again. read more

The renovation of this Inn seems to have been fairly well done. Though I question the concrete floors in the lobby. The room was adequate will following exceptions: Hot water literally took a few minutes to reach the room. If dependent on internet: Wi-Fi DID NOT work. Satellite TV DID NOT work. 'One bar' for cellular. A child can prepare. arrange and present better. Reported all this to Mgr - 2X No response. At checkout - non-caring excuses aplenty. One of the most beautiful experience.!!!!! My husband and I, decided to go for a trip to Bear Mountain on Monday October 24. Walk around Bear Mountain is magic. The colors of the trees, the lake, the view from the top of the mountain is amazing. Time for fresh air and relax. We finished our trip at the restaurant 1915, inside the Bear Mountain Inn. The butternut Squash was delicious, steak and fries also very good and the Polenta cake yumii yumii!!!!! . Great service from our attentive and professional server Fulvio. This review is just for the Sunday brunch. Bear Mountain is weirdly behind the times with the food they offer at brunch. I asked for soy or almond milk, or any non dairy milk, and they didn't have any. Someone else at my table who didnt hear me ask also asked the waitress who responded that she wishes they had milk alternatives, but they dont. As for the food, I'm vegan and was able to eat fruit salad. That was it. You would hope that a $40 fruit salad would be good, but they dont refill any of the food so I had to choose from the few pieces of melon that were left. The menu online states that they have bagels, so me and my husband came prepared with our own non dairy cream cheese only to find that they didnt have bagels that day, despite having lox sitting out which I'm assuming would have been for bagels, so that was odd. Rather than bagels for brunch they had beef stew and lots of other gross looking meat dishes. Its clear their customers are primarily an older crowd, but they are losing young families who are more health conscious. It was pretty empty when I was there on Sunday, which was surprising. We stopped there earlier in the day before we planned on spending the night and the main desk lady was rather rude. The Inn itself was quite literally the last resort for us due to a problem with our directions and it was the only thing around without prostitutes in it (according to a worker in a local business) and we wanted to spend the next day in the park. We got to our room, in the stone cabins, and the room was a mess. It hadn't been made and the sheets were in a pile in the corner of the room. Before that, we had very little instructions as to how to get into the cabins in the first place. The worker didn't tell us how to get into the cabin or what to do. We went back to the front desk and the woman was very apologetic and fixed the problem and upgraded us, actually. The view in the Overlook Lodge was quite splendid in the morning. We got to this room and let me tell you, this television was a pain in the butt to work. There were instructions but if you let go of the button, you were screwed. So if you're not the most technologically inclined, you have been warned. The room was quite big. We got put into a handicapped room, and the shower was kind of a nightmare. There was no edge so water ran all over the place. The bathroom was pretty and well lit. The beds were rather comfortable. The room was well decorated and there was a Keurig coffee pot with complimentary bottled water, a refrigerator, and a microwave. There were also USB charging ports on the lights as well as outlets. The male worker in the morning was very nice. The gift shop lady was rather grumpy, must say. We also had a problem with the workers not giving good directions. Directions such as "over there by the building" was the "best" directions we got for everyone other than the front desk guy. I don't personally think the stay was worth the price. But it was kind of a pretty place to stay. read more

UPDATED REVIEW FOR THE SUNDAY BRUNCH I'm really disappointed to have to update this review. This used to be an amazing experience for Sunday brunch but unfortunately things have changed. The Sunday brunch was moved to another room, the table setting and decor seem to be set up at the last minute with leftover material and furniture. The food quality/variety and quantity has dropped by at least 50%. The nice ambiance from before now is non existent. Really a shame, with the beautiful park and surrounded nature it used to be the best choice for brunch. ------------------------------ This is for the Sunday brunch... This is so far one of the most amazing brunch that I ever been... It's impossible to name everything that was there... But that include champagne, seafood, fresh made omelet, the most perfect falling-of-the-bone bbq pork ribs... Price is fair for the amount and quality of food, $30... Very clean and organized place.. The staff was very friendly and took good care of us at all the times, changing or plates, filling our mimosa and all other drinks on the table... Scheduled a wedding venue tour with Alyssa at 1pm today with my fiancee. Traffic was a mess getting there. We arrive at the receptionist desk at 1:10. We are told that Alyssa decided to give a walk in tour to another couple and that by 1:30, she should be back. At 1:35, we decided to leave because it's ridiculous that a walk in has priority over a couple that scheduled an appointment. If we can't trust a staff member to be there for our appointment, I can't trust them for me to spend $50k for a wedding. Furthermore, you would expect at least an apology phone call. We received none. I've never been so insulted before. read more

The location is great, however, they are still using "The COVID-19 Card" to an extreme. Our reservation was for two nights so they didn't make up our room. They advertise a coffee machine, however, there was no coffee, cups, creamer,etc, we had to go to the front desk and ask. Upon entering the gift shop to buy water, we were told masks were required- I didn't have one so I asked if they could provide one and offered my proof of vaccination - they didn't have masks and proof of vaccination wasn't acceptable. My husband and I recently spent a night here. We stumbled upon Bear Mountain Park a few years ago when they were having an Octoberfest which we enjoyed. We noticed the main Inn and it was a cool, old, gorgeous building but closed at the time. When we found out they had renovated the Inn and it opended as a hotel, we were very excited and wanted to stay there. I am glad we did. The rooms are very nice. Rustic decor, but not over the top and cheesy. All the rooms are on the same floor as the spa which is convienent. The bed and pillows were comfortable and they provide a small Keurig, frig and martini shaker! We booked a couple treatments at the spa. The spa is a little small and it had a few glitches (sink and music not working in the two rooms I was in) but overall it was a nice experience. The restuarant 1915 is gorgeous but a little pricey and not a huge wine selection. My dinner was fantastic and they changed my sides for me since I didn't like anything the salmon came with. I have to say, the dinner menu is tough if you are not a big meat eater. The selections are gamey - veal, duck, lamb. I don't eat a lot of meat and I don't like mushrooms so it was tough finding something I could eat. If you are a vegetarian and don't like mushrooms, you will not be able to eat there. We opted for the $20 brunch the next day, it was not worth the money. Again, I am a picky eater, don't eat a lot of meat, so I basically paid $20 for fruit. The crepes they had were awful and tasted like canned blueberries in them and I had to ask for syrup. The staff everywhere - the restuarant, the spa, the hotel were amazing. I was so impressed, I can't not say enough about their friendly staff. I even left some jewerly there and they called us to tell us and said they would send it to me UPS (although I have yet to receive it yet, that was only a few days ago though) The only two down sides - the first room we were put in, the shower floor was a little dirty, not horrible though. My husband said something and they changed our room. The heater in our room kept going off every half hour and when it would go off it would make two loud clicks. They were so loud they would wake us up, so unfortunately we did not sleep well. But that is the only bad thing I can say. We will go back maybe in the spring or fall for the Octoberfest. And the best part is supposedly they are pet friendly. This would be a great place to stay with your dog and take them hiking in the nice weather. We were there for a Sunday night and I can say that it was fine for the price. We paid $130 for 2 for a room with 2 queen size bed and a bathroom with a bathtub. There was a mini refrigerator, microwave, Tv, also a single chair and a beanbag chair. The staff was always helpful & friendly, however we weren't informed about how to check into, so we went to Overlook Lodge, then had to drive back to main lodge. Also the check in time is 3 pm which is quite late. We had our car, so there was no need to drop our stuff but if you don't have a car, it's gonna be a problem. The room and the area was clean. In the building, there was a living room with a fireplace and also a balcony with the lake view which was stunning! Breakfast was included in the price and it was okay. It is also located at the main lodge. For the breakfast, I can say that it was quite unhealthy since everything was processed. The orange juice seemed like fresh/homemade but it wasn't :) There was a plain omelette, French toasts, English muffins, cream cheese, butter, some kinds of cereals, strawberry jelly and plain croissants. Also tea, coffee and orange juice. The area is good for picnicking and hiking. But I can say no need to stay more than a night. Have fun everybody :) read more

We stayed in one of the stone lodges for one night in October. We did not have the best experience, but this was mostly due to factors outside of their control The stone lodges are really lovely, but on this particular stay, we found them kind of creepy. There are six guest rooms with private baths surrounding a common area with a fire place in each of the lodges. We were the only guest in our lodge, and I don't think there was anyone staying in any of the other lodges that nigh either. This coupled with rain and a the phone ringing in the middle of the night sort of creeped us out. Under better circumstances, we might have really enjoyed the view from the porch overlooking the lake, or the well-appointed common area. I only have a few complaints about the place itself. There was no coffee maker or cups for water in our lodge and the remote control did not work properly. Also, the whole place had a sort of austere, institutional, faux-lodge feel that was a bit strange. The continental breakfast was also a bit weak, though it did have Kashi cereals, which was a plus with me. The individual guest rooms in the lodges are a bit small. Despite these complaints, I believe we would have really enjoyed our stay had it not been for the circumstances. read more

This is an event venue, NOT a quiet wooded retreat! We're two stressed New Yorkers who were looking for someplace peaceful and secluded to get out of the city for a romantic weekend, and all of Bear Mountain Inn's advertised perks seemed perfect -- a spa, hiking trails, nearby Revolutionary War ruins, and even a zoo. Don't get me wrong, the amenities were greatly enjoyable and the scenery is lovely. What they DIDN'T explain, though, was that they're optimized for serving multiple parties of over a hundred people at a time, who book rooms in groups for large getaway events, and who are there to celebrate together. Our stay was on the same weekend as two weddings and a Sweet 16 party. We basically got no sleep because our room, which was right above a ballroom, was thumping with music from at least one of the events. And the halls were filled with revelers Woooooo'ing it up well into the morning. Now, we're happy for the partygoers and would never begrudge anyone for getting jiggy on such momentous events in their lives. But that's not what we were there for, and we wouldn't have come if we had known. We let the staff know about our situation, and to their credit they did try to help. But they couldn't move us to any other room in the lodge because they were all taken up by the parties -- and it wouldn't even have mattered because there are ballrooms and reception halls on the second floor of the three-floor inn, so there ARE NO bedrooms that aren't practically adjacent to the festivities (a GOOD thing for anyone who's there FOR said festivities... but for unaffiliated couples like us, not so much). They even suggested moving us to the cottage-like lodges about a mile away, but it turned out that even those units were rented by one of the groups as well, and would likely be the site of even louder after-parties. Ultimately, the staff did give us a nominal discount, which of course we appreciated. But even THAT got confused, as different managers, each trying to accommodate us, took different amounts off of different parts of our bill, apparently accidentally overwriting each other's bill modifications at various times -- again, something we fully appreciated, but that nonetheless resulted in a bit of stress and confusion when it came time to read the receipt. Bear Mountain Inn seems like a terrific choice for weddings, birthdays, corporate retreats, conferences, Lord of the Rings cosplay conventions, whatever. For someone seeking such an experience, you'll probably have a good time here. That wasn't us. We didn't know. We thought, by all advertising and web research, that this place would be good for couples just wanting to get away from it all. We were wrong. We place no real blame on the staff per se, nor certainly on any of our fellow guests. Nobody really did anything wrong, except possibly for the advertisers and copy editors of the Bear Mt Inn website for failing to fully communicate the nature of the venue. Had we known -- had that been made clear -- we wouldn't have come. Overall this was a very good experience. I have stayed at the inn itself, not the overlook lodge which is a very different experience. The renovation of the Inn was very well done. The rooms feel new. The furniture is new, the wallpaper is new, and the bathrooms look like they were taken from an episode of cribs. It's that good. Unlike a previous review, I did not have any problems with the refrigerator, or excessive heat in the room. It was just right. The king bed with five pillows was also the epitome of comfort. You also get a complimentary water bottle. The wifi is free and very reliable. The staff at the inn are courteous and helpful. This is a high class operation, and supposedly a SPA should open shortly. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. The only downside was Café 1915 which is part of the Inn. Avoid café 1915 on the first floor at all costs. If you have gotten lost while hiking and have not eaten in a week, still avoid café 1915. It's that bad. My biggest qualm is the food, both ingredients and preparation leave much to be desired. It doesn't help that the utensils have water stains on them and are need of polishing. The young lady serving us was friendly and nice, but neither me nor my companion ordered anything that was enjoyable. The quality of the café is in sharp contrast to the quality of the inn or the amazing brunch that the inn serves upstairs. I don't understand why they keep this café open. A snackbar would be a better replacement. The floors on the first floor of the inn also warrant replacement, or at least, a very aggressive scrubbing. The Sunday brunch is worth dying for. It's that good. It costs $32 per person and it's worth every penny. The selection and the quality of food is outstanding. They also serve mimosas and Bloody Mary's as part of the brunch. The deserts are also both decadent and excellent. The rest of the inn is immaculate. It's also a great value. I think that it was a good stay and I would like to come back at some point. To start with, this is a review of overlook lodge, not the historic Bear Mountain Inn which is closed for remodeling ( judging by the ivy growing on the Foreman's trailer, I think it is closed for a long time) Overlook lodge is a 1960's hotel set high on a hillside overlooking Bear Mountain state park. The lobby is a large room with a gorgeous if small terrace overlooking the lake. They serve an adequate continental breakfast here in the morning. The staff was friendly but I was surprised they don't offer to help carry your luggage to your room since there is no elevator. The decor is dreadful, a strange mix of faux rustic and modern, made my skin crawl. The location and view are wonderful, but I think it is overpriced for being up near $200 per room. The TV reception is terrible as well, boo Dish Network! Also very easy to miss the entrance road, quick turn after the traffic circle with little signage, nearly impossible at night. With a mid century style remodel and new landscaping this place could be stellar. read more
