Stayed here for one night while visiting West Point to attend a wedding. This historic hotel has great views of the Hudson, and is covered in military pictures. Parking is complimentary, and valet is available. For an extra fee, you can add breakfast to your stay, which is a nice buffet of hot and cold items. The hotel offers a lovely, spacious rooftop bar with great views, various seating options, fire pits and (when we stayed) a dj. Our room was spacious, with a separate sitting area and mini-fridge. A complimentary goodie bag was a nice welcome, and included earplugs. Very clean, easy check in and out, walkable to a variety of restaurants and beautiful grounds. Our family was treated to Sunday Brunch at The Thayer Hotel on July 12, 2026, by our son and daughter-in-law, and it became one of the most cherished memories of our visit to welcome our newest grandson (just 6 weeks old!) into the family. With our 2 1/2-year-old grandson, our new baby grandson, and three generations gathered around the table overlooking the beautiful Hudson River, I was brought to tears of joy and gratitude. My husband and I will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in August, and I had wondered how we could make it special. As I sat there with my family, I realized this was everything I could have wished for and more. The food was exceptional, the atmosphere magical, and the staff made every guest feel welcomed and valued. A highlight was when our grandson paused and said, "Dada, I hear beautiful (his pronunciation "boooootiful )music," as the pianist played in the background. After 40 years of marriage, my husband and I can agree on one thing: the food, ambiance, and experience at The Thayer are truly top-class. Just stayed 3 nights for a class reunion. King room newly renovated overlooking the parking lot and porta potty's in the distance. Sitting area was comfortable; bed was very comfortable . Pillows drove me crazy as they are very plump large and fluffy. I'm a side sleeper and forgot to bring my own which another review recommended. Bathroom was nicely appointed with many items provided. Safe works perfectly as does the mini fridge in the room. The curtains are a big improvement over hotels with a rod that never pulls the drapes shut. Desk staff were great as were the young men doing the valet parking. Rooftop bar is very nice with a great view of the Hudson. Food ( one dinner; two breakfast buffets and reunion buffet) was great; could recommend they step it up with desserts; clearly fresh from the freezer( for our event). Restaurant service was slow but very accommodating. Fitness center is basic but serviceable . Let's talk about the lighting system in the hotel room.. omg. Motion sensored and they give you instructions however they don't cover all the functions of this awful system. I followed theirs to the letter only to roll over and have the lights come blasting on twice the first night and once each of the following nights despite doing what instructed. Discussed with the front desk who responded there must be an issue with the system. I had this system in my office; I taped a piece of cardboard over the sensor to defeat it. The banquet staff did a remarkable job. Overall it was a great stay with minor issues. If you are in the area, I'd recommend it. Must take the West Point tour! read more

Came here on a work trip for just an overnight stay. This place looks like a castle from the outside, with views of the Hudson River in some rooms (but unfortunately not mine this time). The interior lobby of the hotel does feel a bit outdated, but the rooms were clean and comfortable, I had a desk and a large clean bathroom. Amenities like shampoo, mouthwash, makeup wipes, and even ear plugs were included which was a nice touch. The woman working the front desk was a bit odd. When we arrived we gave the name of the person on our team who had booked the room (who had told us the rooms would all be under his name) and she looked it up, said, "Nope, I just have one room under that name," and then stared at us blankly. We panicked a little at that point - she didn't ask us if it could be under any other name, or you know, let us know that she had other rooms available. We finally spoke up to see if she could check whether or not they were under our individual names, which they were. The rest of our stay went well though -- there was one restaurant (Patton's Tavern) still opened by the time we arrived at 9 pm, so we got some food and passed out. Only three stars as the venue and decor were lovely. Front Desk was very helpful too! For the price of the buffet, per person, I was expecting a lot more. Waitstaff needs to be taught how to reach for glasses, and plates. Understand it's the last push of brunches, but no hustle or pep in step to earn the gratuity. And when you do ask for a refill, you'll get it either in the glass or all over the table. Or! It takes awhile to get a soda!!! Disappointing to say the least. read more

Had the chance to return 13 years later. Not much has changed. Decent spread, banana foster waffles were awesome, lots of deserts and breakfast items, some lunch items (shrimp were great) but not sure that translates to $69 per person (with tip.) Very expensive. Staff were friendly and attentive. It was clean, and all the food looked fresh. Plus its a great venue. Make sure you tour the museum down the road, which is the same place to get the visitor passes you need to get onto West Point. Passes are not needed to just go to the resturant. The fair hotel is a fancy hotel located within Westpoint in New York. You were able to get to its entrance past the first security gate that will waive you in and tell you to park towards the right hand side after the entrance. It is clearly steeped in a ton of history, with lots of photos of former graduates lining the lobby, the hallways, and it was in each and every room. it is nestled right next to the Hudson River is absolutely beautiful. You can see it from most of the dining options as well as most of the grounds behind the hotel itself. Parking is complementary, but breakfast is not. They have a buffet option for purchase at includes a variety of hot and cold dishes. Personally, I found the price a little bit steep for the options available, but there were no other places to eat. Another thing to note is that because of its age, the walls are very thin so the hotel supplies you with a little welcome packet of earplugs. I would imagine this becomes helpful for early-morning train horns across the river as well as late night dinners and socializing on the outside rooftop patios. Certainly a bucket list item to stay here and very happy we did. read more

Review is for the restaurant and the tavern. We were here to have lunch after wedding rehearsal for our friends. Our waiter, and actually the entire staff, super friendly, funny, and welcoming. The food was great. Alot of people in our group ordered the fried chicken, well you better be hungry, because they give you 4 PIECES! Beyond delicious! The corn bread is just as tasty, with a side of coleslaw & some dipping sauce with a kick. My caprese salad sandwich was good, but I would've preferred more "salad" as opposed to the bun because it was too "bready". They forgot I ordered sweet potato fries, but no worries, they had it out in no time. Haven't been to the FAMOUS landmark of Hotel Thayer in greater than twenty years. Have to say, it has not changed. And, this is certainly a compliment. We were a party of four for Sunday Brunch and we're treated so well. Service was with a smile by someone with my namesake "Cat". She was attentive to our plates and drinks on point for refills or extras that we requested (milk, sugar) The Sunday Brunch was overwhelmingly delicious as we couldn't go beyond one plate. Barely having room for dessert, we managed to share plates of berries and cheesecake. We ate no more meals until the next day! 4 stars only because: wi-fi not too accessible. One needs to go up to the front desk. The worker will "secretly" put the password into your phone - not liking this! Parking is a little scarce and tight. I was here for a corporate training and to be fair to the hotel I am not a fan of old fashioned, classic decor which is for many part of this hotels charm so maybe that colored my review a tad as overall it was very nice. The location is beautiful- just inside the gates of West Point and overlooking the Hudson which provided stunning views particularly from the meeting space. Check in was quick and easy and the room was very large - each one dedicated to a Military person who made a big impact. The decor is very minimal - a bed, chest of drawers on which a TV was precariously balanced. a tiny side table with a. Coffee machine, chair and a desk. I really wish there was a fridge as I arrived late with a bunch of water but I think there is ice nearby. The lights are on a energy saving system which is great but for the fact it can be finicky trying to turn them on and off. The shower was a pain - it ran cold one day and way too hot the next to the point I could not get it to cool down but it was a nice big bright space. The AC is needed but sounds like a freight train so you have to make a decision about being cool or being kept awake The breakfast buffet that was available to call guests is not worth it ! There is bacon, eggs and potatoes which is not for me , fresh fruit and pastries but they or at least the croissants were like hockey pucks and I made the mistake of getting oatmeal and putting what I assumed was cinnamon on it but it was something else that had a strong curry scent - maybe allspice? But the rest of the food was really rather good! It's nice but not one I would book again as it's not personally my style but everyone there was very nice. We came to a wedding here and the venue is beautiful. The view of the Hudson River is amazing and the room was simply decorated but very nice. We had a great time at the wedding with lots of food, drinks, and dancing! The best part was the dancing :) and the music was fantastic. My expectation coming to this historic hotel was excellency. Because the rooms are so expensive (even a block room for the wedding), I expected really good food. Let's take it by course shall we..... Appetizers were good and they had a fresh seafood bar which was great. We really enjoyed the shrimp and the oysters. They had crab meat still on the claws which was a cool display but they were soggy and just not good. You know when you bite into seafood and it feels spongy...like that. They had little appetizers at each table and the best ones were the spicy empanadillas. They were nice and flavorful. Although we were excited about the variety of food offered at the buffet table, we were disappointed because it was bland and not very hot. We were really excited about the filet mignon, but it was overcooked. I think what we liked best was the sausage (lots of flavor) and the salad (it was lightly dressed). I was talking to some friends about my experience and they said that they heard a lot of the same complaints from other people who have attended weddings there. I guess if you go to the restaurant, then it's better but with so many great places to eat in the Hudson Valley, I don't want to use my hard-earned money to find out. Now about the open bar - I ordered coconut daiquiris. I'm on a coconut daiquiri kick since I had some really delicious ones at the Icehouse in Poughkeepsie and in Puerto Rico. At first, they didn't know how to make them which I can understand, I guess but it's a daiquiri....just sayin'. What I don't understand is why you would scoop a spoonful of granulated white sugar at the bottom of the glass instead of using simple syrup. Very confusing. My drink was good enough to have a second one but the sugar....weird. The dessert table was great. The wedding cake was delicious and I'm pretty picky about cheesecake but this one was good. I also had a little eclair which was good. They had a marshmallow bar which I had never seen before but people seemed to love it. I didn't try it because I was digging the cheesecake. Historic military hotel, located on base at West Point Military Academy. The Thayer was built in 1926, and maintains many of its original details. The lobby is beautiful, save for the awful LED TV's mounted on the walls. This is a 3 star hotel, with over 100 guest rooms, and several suites. On site is MacArthur's Riverview Restaurant (pub style food) and Zulu Time, a rooftop bar and lounge. My husband and I stayed one night in a King Deluxe room, priced at $326/night with tax. Each room is themed, dedicated to a US veteran. We stayed in the Peter Dawkins room, which was clean and nicely appointed. The Hudson River view was slightly obstructed, but still beautiful. Amenities included a Keurig coffee maker, a TV (not a smart TV), and quality toiletries. All of the employees I encountered at The Thayer were genuinely friendly and polite. That being said, service is limited. We ordered food via delivery, and they could not bring it up to our room or give us silverware. There were no water bottles in the room. They do not offer room service. They also do not accept American Express, but fortunately the room deposit was only $45/night. The Thayer is not luxurious, but it is comfortable, and likely your best bet at West Point. I do really hope they take down those TV's in the lobby though. read more

Just an update Air conditioning not working in our room. Left the room for dinner when a repair person was supposed to repair the AC. - no change. Valet parking available, otherwise self-parking on site was easy. There is a small hill/driveway to walk up once you park. There's two seatings. Big buffet of omelette station, ham station, waffle station with ice cream and sprinkles. Dessert table (very messy) with fruit. Cold salads, shrimp cocktail, cheeses, danish, mini donuts yay, and bagels. Chicken with mushrooms. Salmon. Penne alla vodka. Sausage and hash browns, scrambled eggs, the powdered kind pass. Few others I can't remember. Mimosa's included. The hostess was super helpful as we didn't have reservations and she said we could wait for a possible no show. It worked out. Sandy one of our servers, was very pleasant and attentive. The other couldn't wait to leave, eye roll. Of course the scenery in the fall was a bonus. Overall the hotel seems to be in good shape, well maintained. Sofas and chairs in good condition. Could use some touch up paint near the bathrooms. We were disappointed to find there wasn't a bar area to possibly eat and the rooftop was closed. You would think with all the people that come through they would want to capture that business. Beautiful hotel located inside the gates of West Point Military Academy. They have a couple restaurants and rooftop bar if you're wanting to just stay close and chill. Service was good and the hotel is very well maintained. I was blessed with the opportunity to stay there at no charge because our son got invited to take a tour there, so the Academy took care of all the reservations and fees. I believe the hotel can fill up pretty fast especially if there a special events so if you're interested I would advise to call and book ahead of time just to be safe. read more

The Thayer Hotel is named after the first superintendent, 1817-1833, at the academy, Colonel Sylvanius Thayer. Built in Gothic style architecture, the stately granite stone hotel sits high on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Hudson River. Historic preservation took place in in the late 1990s. Chandeliers, beautiful leaded glass windows and massive carved wooden ceiling beams are just a few of the interior features of this historic hotel. Simply lovely! Chantelle has been such a delight to assist, and it's obvious she understands the importance and value of customer service. She always seems to go the extra mile! When I have an issue, I'm always relieved to see she's on shift. It's so obvious Chantelle cares about The Thayer guest and their experience. Her assistance at guest check in, with questions in and with internet issues is greatly appreciated. Casey has been incredibly helpful on my visits to The Thayer with event planning! It's definitely not the worst place I've stayed . We just felt like the things they could improve on aren't the hardest things and it showed their lack of attention to standards. We stayed there for my husband's birthday which was Memorial Day weekend so it is possible that this affected our stay. First, the shower had 2 hair strands that were not ours on the wall . It's no secret this property has some age on it, and that's ok but the hair thing really didn't help. The bed was comfy and clean so we were happy with that. We went to dinner at MacArthur's . When we sat down, there was a long strand of blonde hair on the table. Although our waiters were very nice, service was really slow. Another person dining in even called it to the waiter's attention. The food was good though and we had a very nice view. We also noticed that when we booked the place we put on the comments that it was his birthday. We have noticed at other hotels they usually at the very least will acknowledge it and say happy birthday. Sometimes we have even been left a complimentary bottle or card . But they didn't say anything about it. The icing on the cake was as we were both coming and leaving our interaction with the MP was not great. The first guy was slightly aggressive because we went in the wrong lane- it was our first time there and we did miss the sign. The second time the MP wasn't aggressive but you can tell he hade a tude that we went the wrong way, but this time there was not a sign, we both checked as we circled back so I don't know what that was about. Overall , like I said it wasn't the worst , and we did get a good deal on the room. But I certainly would not pay to stay there again. read more

Spent 3 days at Hotel Thayer. Room was very tired! Bathroom wallpaper coming loose it's so old. Architecture is beautiful, but worn couches in lobby don't make a good appearance. Needs refreshed with new upholstery! Most disappointing was the Sunday Brunch. The food was mediocre with not much flavor. Very bland. Nothing served was exciting! I remember the beautiful seafood table!!! Frozen desserts, nothing homemade!! The Tavern food came with bad chicken wings (dry) like they were recooked! Hummus had no flavor. We stayed at the Thayer for the West Point event big music production with fireworks and the convenience of gettingto it easily..no go. No one knew anything about the event. The valet drove us to the bus stop and there were no busses even though, at check in we were told there were busses just steps away. We sat and waited...no busses. We had to walk 2 miles to an from the event. No one knew anything at the hotel about a major event just 2 miles away honoring our country. The Hilton knows more about local events than the Thayer. That is not only extremely disappointing but embarrassing. Who owns the place? I find it hard to believe they are Americans! The reservation person also never told me when I made the reservation that you do not accept American Express and that was all I had on me. Thank God my companion had Visa or we would have had to drive 3 hours home that night. Very noisy air conditioning unit...couldn't sleep at all..and property needs powewashing badly mostly in the zooloo bar area and around the back of the hotel...very dowdy looking. Checking in to this venerable location, in the lobby with polished woods, stone floors and great front door valet service. No "extra" parking charges, so tip well! Rooms were comfortable, spacious and clean - with state of the art lighting and temperature control. Wi-fi was $9.99 a day, but 3G worked just fine. You can choose between "academy" and "river" (slightly higher rate) views. There are two bars - the indoor Patton - and the Rooftop. Patton was good in the heat of the day while we had time between the ceremony and reception. The rooftop was great for our post-wedding party and offers a spacious patio with lots of seating and a large central bar. Service was good in both spots - all self serve at the bar, but the bartenders kept up despite the large group. Unfortunately, no food can be ordered on the Rooftop bar, so you can trudge down to the pantry in the lobby. There were tasty sandiches, fruit, snacks and assorted drinks available until the 1 a.m. close. The Patton offered a decent selection of finger foods, burgers and sandwiches. The McArthur Restaurant is also in the hotel. We only had our Sunday brunch there, but the food was delicious and the service was good. My boyfriend and I absolutely LOVED this hotel. We had to come up to the area for a wedding about 30 minutes away, however, we decided to do our own thing and just stay here. It is located between the entrance point and the WPMA post. It's impossible not to feel safe and at ease here. The hotel is located right on the Hudson River, surrounded my mountains. It's pretty beautiful. From the moment you pull the car up to the hotel, you fall in love with the hotels historic vibe. The staff all around was amazing from the moment I stepped out of the car, eager and happy to assist you. Checking in was a breeze, Kaitlyn at the front desk was really kind and went over everything the hotel had to offer. Our room was located on the 3rd floor. I will say the room was a little outdated, but I didn't mind because it was very comfortable. Especially the bed! It gave me a wonderful nights rest. The hotel had two restaurants and a rooftop bar. Before heading home, we stopped for a bite to eat. Jason was our server and he was great! I had the French onions soup (amazinnnng) and the turkey club and everything came out perfect. I went exploring and saw parts of the hotel that is perfect to have an event or a wedding. I would personally recommended it for people to go and view. The hotel was unique and the service was second to none, so if you are looking to stay somewhere different I would highly suggest this place if you are in the area. read more

This could have very easily been a 4 star review vs. a 3 star. They bill themselves as a luxury hotel but that's really stretching things. I'd say if you are here for the history ... You are in the right place. The hotel is inside the West Point campus (you have to pass through a military-guarded checkpoint to get into the lot) and as the hotel mentions, it has been the host to many US Presidents, military leaders and world leaders visiting campus. The hotel has a castle-like feel. From the outside stone structure to the giant lion and eagle stone gargoyles. The inside has flags, beams and wrought iron chandeliers. The rooms have a Georgian-Federal style of decor which feels like one part white house/one part 1980s Crowne Plaza hotel. If you like modern feeling rooms, you'd be MUCH better off staying at a nearby Fairfield Inn or Hilton Garden Inn. If you appreciate old style hotels and want to feel like you are on the campus of West Point, this hotel will be fine for you. The biggest let down which could make the arguement for a 3 star rating would be the service ... or lack of. The service here was almost non-existent throughout, especially so at the restaurants and bars. We ate a meal in the main restaurant, MacArthur's Riverfront restaurant, and the host treated us like a nuisance. He sat as at a table that was dirty and had dirty seats and when we told him that the seats were filthy (one of us was wearing white pants) he took a couple napkins from the nearby stand and dropped them on the table and walked away. Nice. Also, there is absolutely no reason to charge a $14 resort fee for this place!! What a shady practice this resort fee has become at HOTELS!! This HOTEL is not a resort ... There is no pool, no beach. There is a dated fitness center which is the only ammenity other than a jug of tap water and a basket of spoiled apples. I have no idea what makes them think they can charge $14 for a resort fee for this place. Out of priciple, that knocks them from 4 stars to 3 stars. If you want to be a hotel, it's a 4 star. For a resort, you are a 3 star. How about that? We ate a few meals at the Zulu time bar, which had a great view of the Hudson River. However, the waitress would often dissapear for a half hour at a time between seating and ordering. Nobody checked on us once the food was delivered and they have these useless little buttons on the table you can push which summons a server. However, none of the servers use the bracelet which they are connected to. The food at Zulu Time and the bar was described in much better wording on the menu than actual. The salad was mediocre ... Something you'd buy premade in a plastic case at the grocery store. The sandwiches and burgers were average and the chicken wings were bagged. The last negative was that the room was NOISY!!! We were given a 'river view' room which we were excited about the view. It had 2 small windows that had metal lattice on them and they looked out onto the outdoor bar. There was a DJ playing music until 11 p.m. which sounded like it was right inside our room. We had an early start so when 10 pm rolled around, we were thankful we had to put up with wedding style music pumped into our room for another hour before we could sleep. The bar was open until 2 a.m. but the sound wasn't too bad once the DJ stopped. There was a train which blew it's whistle every few hours throughout the night but this was something we were warned about at the front desk. We should have known that we were in for an interesting night when we got into the room and found a bag on the pillow containing a 'sleep kit' which had ear plugs. Beyond the noise ... The room was very spacious. The decor was very classic ... Those who complain about dated decor, you are staying at a castle themed hotel on a historic military campus. It's not a Courtyard by Marriott. We had a good stay ... The downtown area was deserted on a Friday night and kind of errie even during the day in June. The campus was empty because it was summer and though the hotel was booked up with wedding guests and military folks, the town of highland falls felt a bit like a deserted ghost town. Checkout is 11 am and they were nice enough to extend it to noon, even though the hotel was fully booked. Check-in was 4 p.m. Still, the hotel has a cool weekend road trip vibe and there really isn't anyplace quite like it that I've stayed at. It's warm, cozy and comfortable in a dated sort of way but I think the bad reviews come from folks who expect more since the advertising the hotel does uses the words, 'luxury hotel' which I assure you it's not. Fyi ... You can save $100 or more by booking on one of the 'mystery' travel sites or last minute booking sites. I was in and out of this hotel for close to 2 weeks. I was with a group that used one of their conference rooms. The hotel both inside and out is spectacular. The details and views are amazing!! The place looks like a fortress. Now the minus: it was liking pulling teeth getting the front desk and housekeeping to get standard things we needed for our conference room. The first two days we went without a coffee and breakfast spread. And it was a daily challenge getting them to clean and vacuum the room after each day. When we asked for things they were very slow to service the room. They also sporadically took out the trash. I would into stay here if the price is within your budget and need to be on West Point for an event. Otherwise, I'd stay somewhere else. read more

Classic hotel with great history and great location, our room was dedicated to a Medal of Honor winner.

We stayed for the weekend. The pub menu is limited and not great. They are working on a gastro pub type menu, but it does not offer much of a variety and there is little is you want anything green or plant based. Only two beers on tap, but not bad if you arrive late night and need a quick bite. We stayed for the brunch on Sunday and it is well done. Plan to pay a few hundred if you go with more than a friend, but it is worth the price. Lots of options and choices include nice salads, lox, omelet and carving stations, waffle choices and much more. The view of the Hudson is fantastic and the live piano player adds a nice touch of class to the morning. read more
