Derek is a fantastic mechanic and I can't rave enough about how customer-focused the entire shop is. Rather than giving me the cold shoulder because I bought a fairly high-end "leftover" eMTB online that was damaged in shipping (2 other shops in town did just that), Derek stopped what he was doing, repaired the damage I saw, and even went over much of the bike straightening out other problems from poor assembly that I hadn't even noticed. And he only charged me what the seller was willing to cover!! All while chatting like we were old friends, giving me insight on the trails to ride in the area (I'm new here) and just making me feel right at home. We walked in cold looking to rent a mountain bike for a ride, and the owners were extremely helpful. They tuned up a mountain bike and pointed us towards Maple Hill Trails after explaining how to navigate its 8 mile loop and where to park. The ride had fun downhill sections, challenging (but short) climbs, and was completely empty. The bike worked great! They told us a couple fun stories of their travels over the years, shared about a local race coming up next weekend, and all-in-all left us feeling completely satisfied and ready to come back for more trail riding fun! My wife and I were in the market for ebikes. Searching on the internet there was a limited supply. Derek and the gang at Bear Valley Bikes went the extra mile to find top of the line bikes for my wife and I. Derek was able to provide a great deal on my bike. My wife's bike size was hard to fine but after an extensive search, Derek was able to find one in Colorado. I purchased the bike and had it shipped to Big Bear. DO NOT RENT BIKES FROM THIS ESTABLISHMENT. I rented two bikes with my boyfriend here are 9/28/19. We rode the bikes for less than 2 minutes before going down a hill on one of the easier trails near the lake. When I first went down the hill, the BRAKES DID NOT WORK AT ALL. I ended up flying about 15 feet into a ravine, and had to be rushed to the emergency room. I came out with a concussion, FRACTURED tibula, and a meniscus tear. So when I say that the breaks didn't work, I mean it. I was seriously injured, and unfortunately this company doesn't seem to care, which is the real tragedy. My boyfriend signed a waiver and I did not. Second, the instructor allowed me to sit on the bike, but he did not instruct me to "ride it down the street" to make sure it was functioning properly. Being my very first time EVER renting bicycles, I did not even know this was a standard procedure. Your employees were negligent in instructing me to safely use this bike and were only concerned about receiving my boyfriend's signature. The biking company still charged my boyfriend $100 for the bike rental that lasted 2 minutes and the damages. I am in disbelief this such a negligent company can provide bikes that do not have basic working mechanics- like a break. When I called and asked about how they could help, they said they would not do anything. Irresponsible and have zero care for the safety of your very own customers. I am in crutches and cannot work, move, bend properly because of a faulty break system. I can only post photos of the injuries to me face because the injuries to my abdomen is too severe for Yelp. Please be cautious of this negligent company because the worst part is they still made him pay the $100 when he was trying to rush me to the hospital. Great bikes for a great price. My bike had an issue with the chain slipping. I told the owner who then lectured me on changing gears under power. I tried telling him that it was slipping with out me changing gears, but he kind of tunnel visioned on operator error. The bike tech tested it, admitted it wasn't tuned properly. I had a great ride after that. Would have been full five stars if I felt I was being heard. I would return! read more

The Hermonator got my bike fixed in a pinch literally the day before a race. During this pandemic, bike shops have been overwhelmed to say the least. Bear Valley bikes is no exception; the day I walked in there were already customers being helped and each mechanic was busy fixing other customers' bikes. I explained my situation to Derek (already paid and pre-registered for a race and broke a rear spoke the day before). He jumped in and fixed it himself. He could have easily turned me away and sent me elsewhere given their current workload, but he didn't. Not only did BVB do a quality repair job - which held up phenomenally for the race - they did it last minute and still charged a more than fair price. I love this local bike shop. I visit maybe once a month I live in Riverside and I enjoy riding up in the big bear area. I was testing my new gravel bike, stopped by the shop to say hello Sam looked over my new gravel bike and noticed it was a little loose on the neck. He ended up bleeding my brakes adjusted my neck and my disc brakes. Sam is AWESOME! He is knowledgeable with the mechanics of a bike and customer service is excellent! I came up here from San Diego to rent a bike and had a great experience. The bike was $30 for 4 hours (steal!) and in near perfect shape. They took the time to explain how everything worked, which trails to ride at Summit, and after I had returned from my ride they walked me through that bike and additional bikes in my price range with the +'s and -'s of each when I inquired about buying one. Super helpful to a new guy like me. I worked with 5 people in my various points of working with them and every single person was friendly, helpful, and respectful. I thought their service was excellent. They have a great team. As an aside, I saw a dude high up on Summit looking like he was out of gas, mid race. We talked for a while when I stopped for water by him. He was super nice. Not surprisingly, I saw him 3 hours later when I returned to the bike shop and he was working at Bear Valley Bikes. Super nice kid. I'll be back for sure. Their rentals are awesome and they have tons of great bikes for sale as well. The ride from their shop to the base of Summit is pretty easy as well if you don't have a bike rack for your car. read more

Great shop. They were very happy to talk through how to navigate some of the singletrack routes around Big Bear. The rates were exceptional too. I've rented mountain bikes probably a dozen of times in different locations, and this was hands-down the best bang for the buck. If you are looking to rent a more top-end mountain bike, I'd recommend getting there earlier in the day (esp. on weekends). Got there about hour after the shop opened and was hooked up with a Specialized Epic to hit Skyline trail. Location is great too...just ride across the street and you start climbing up the mountain. read more

Great shop! You can easily tell that all the staff ride. They are just as enthusiastic about the gear and trails as I am. Jeremy was a huge help in figuring out which trails to ride and how I missed the one I was looking for. Also the guy did a killer job setting up my bike tubeless. Derek was full of information and fun to talk to. He even helped me figure out which way to drive heading back to NorCal! Truly a great shop! Lindsey, "the Scottish girl" (as an other customer put it), and the locals where helpful also. They all love talking about trails and hardware or the local area.
