I have lived in Los Angeles and San Diego for the past 8 years, receiving color correction treatments for bleached out ruined hair, highlights, and balayage at high end salons in La Jolla and Santa Barbara. The peak of what I have spent on my hair should not have been in Wilmington, NC, and for bad hair at that! Yes, I have long hair. I have NEVER been charged anything close to $600 and even if I was okay with that price, I am not okay with it for the hair that I left with. My hair is fried, looks nothing like the photo that I showed her, has a bad cut, and has bad color. There are streaks of platinum mixed with deep brown, leaving me with all shades of human hair on my head. When I called the salon after getting over the initial shock of the $600 charge, Rachel couldn't give me a good explanation for how that price came to be. She said she charges by the hour, then she said by the individual service "she had to charge extra for the money piece in front". Then, she told me that she had to provide color correction and that is why it was so expensive. I color my roots with Wella at home. There was no color correction needed. She gave me a full highlight service with toning and it ended up frying my hair and looking not at all subtle. I feel like crying, looking back at how my hair was just a couple of days prior to going in and paying $600 to someone for this "service" is such an insult. I am super picky about who cuts and colors my hair and she met every expectation I had going in. She was personable and super attentive to what I wanted, she asked a lot of questions to make sure it was clear and talked me through the process. She is so so nice and I am so happy I found her! I found her through Instagram and she is active on there about hair care, how to's, and just overall good people. I learn from her when I'm not even in the chair! Leah is another one I've gotten blowouts from and I am so so happy I met her along the way too! She is so bubbly and has such good skills at making my hair so full of life. I couldn't be happier to get another blowout from her for a treat yo self day - because, honestly, we all need them nowadays. She also cut my husbands hair and I absolutely love it. As a self-proclaimed tomboy, I'm always nervous to work with a new stylist out of fear that I'm going to end up with a hard-to-maintain and style super complicated 'do. However, Katie styled my hair in a way that made me feel more feminine than ever without feeling like I was getting ready for prom. The cut and color both looked and felt so natural and I have never before felt so stylish and pretty! One thing that I TRULY appreciate about her is the fact that she LISTENS. I wear my hair in a ponytail every single day for work and too many stylists have ignored me when I said this. In the past I would too frequently end up with a cut so short that I had this tiny little ridiculous ponytail and hair falling all over the place (including in to my eyes). Katie cut my hair to the perfect length where it looked healthier and fuller but still left a great looking ponytail! (And on her first try, at that!) I was pretty stoked at the idea of getting a haircut today as my long, thick mane was in dire need of a trim and has not been cooperating in the heat. Curl Up N'Dye is located close to my home so since my husband so graciously stated he'd be happy to occupy our puppy's attention for a while, I called to make an appointment. The conversation went something like this: Stylist: Curl Up N'Dye? Me: Hello, I was curious if you had any openings today for a haircut? (Clear pause in the conversation while I wait for a response.) Stylist: Who's calling? (I find this a weird question to ask since I have yet to actually make the appointment, but I provide my name.) Me: Tara Stylist: So you've never been here before? Me: No, I have not. I am new to the area and looking for a stylist. Stylist: Well I don't have any openings today. Kimberly, you don't have any openings do ya? (I hear Kimberly mumble, "huh?" in the background. Clearly as confused by this conversation as I am.) Stylist: No, she don't have no openings either. Me: Oh, okay. (At this point I'm waiting to be asked if I'd like to schedule for another day.) Stylist: Alright then. Bye. (And as I'm saying, "well thanks, have a nice day," the call ends.) Now mind you, I know that I sound like a Pittsburgher, but I was completely taken aback that my business was so quickly dismissed. I immediately called SolarHair which was my second choice as it is just a little bit further from home, but still only a 15 minute ride down market. I had a great experience there and plan to go back for many more cuts (and foils again when autumn rolls around.)
