This was thee most pleasnt experience in a hair store I've ever encountered. For starters, this a BLACK OWNED BUSINESS- extra points for that alone! When you arrive, you have to use a call box to enter the building. Once inside, there is a 5 person max due to the pandemic (so you may have to wait in the hall). Once they allow you inside, they provide you with hand sanitizer (GREAT SAFETY MEASURE). The inside is not as big as the other hair stores but they have everything you need! There was a young lady on the floor assisting customers. I asked many questions and she answered each one in a friendly, patient and professional manner. I stumbled across Beauty Plus Northwood for the first time. Greeted warmly by the 2 young ladies in this charming and well organized beauty store. The young lady who was stocking was professional and engaging. She stopped what she was doing to help me with products knowledge , she was patient and most importantly she was not on her cell phone but being attentive to the customers needs. I was simply blown away, because this is a rarity in great customer service. I can't wait to go back there again. Mrs. Meagan the owner was also on top of things, she greeted me with a warm smile, I was never rushed or blown off when I had questions to ask. This place is a must see, if you are looking for a fresh, calm and enjoyable shopping experie nce, right near MSU. There were plenty of styles to choose from and staff available to help find what you need. They may have what you need in the back - so ask. Beauty Plus is located at 2107 North Charles Street, just about two blocks up from North Avenue on the right hand side. Metered street parking is available right out front and the store is located on the second floor but it's only about 7 to 8 steps up. It has a humble, familiar set-up, much like the feeling you get from the charming young couple that run the business (whom, by the way, I had the pleasure of being warmly greeted by as I walked into the store). Although the shop's space is modest, Beauty Plus manages to house a fair variety of quality products ranging from hair care to hair extensions and everything in between. Speaking of hair, I've never seen so many varieties of weaves in my life! If you're biased towards a specific brand of hair, Beauty Plus is sure to have it in stock and fellas, don't feel left out because whether your head is full of Soul Glo, Blue Magic waves or just plain bald, there's a section of hair and ESSENTIAL OIL (!!!) products to make sure you're covered-from scalp to beard to chest hair (ya know, if you're into that sorta thing). As it's only been about 10 months since its inception, I get the impression that Beauty Plus is still gathering a feel for what's in highest demand by its regular consumer base before expanding its inventory (nail care, jewelry, etc). I also learned (through casual conversation with one of the patrons) that Beauty Plus features beauty products made by local residents! That being said, it seems this business has done a great job thus far with having the basics covered and to me, that's the sign of a local business destined to thrive so long as we, the Baltimore consumer, learn to not default to a Sally's or any other random store owned by individuals that live outside of this great city. I was a little taken back by the locked door you have to buzz into, we don't have that in Atlanta so I was like WTH, lol. Once I got in though, the selection was great, the owner (the BLACK OWNER!!! )was in the house and he helped just enough. The woman who was working in the establishment was with child and was taking a phone call. Once she saw that I was ready to check out she asked me if i found everything ok. My how the neighborhood has changed since I used to live on North Ave in the 90's- before Safeway was put in. I was surprised by the metered parking, but it appears with the inclusion of MICA the area is becoming a little gentrified. I was happy to see the African Hair Braiding place is still on the corner. Now the store itself- won't mention how to get in, other reviewers got that covered. I will mention this store is like FUBU of the beauty supply world. It was the reason I came from the county and made a 1/2 hour drive to support. What was really surprising is how tiny it is on the inside BUT had what wanted. It was sort of magical. So you can tell they must to research on what is trending. That is ALWAYS a good thing. Know your base. I liked that the owner was in a corner whipping up some type of products. It made me feel like he was a kindred spirit, since I made my own hair grease I call jungle juice. Friendly, helpful and positive what more can you ask for in a business. Often I know exactly what I want without asking for help but because of the kind approach from each employee and the owner, I always say YES. Remember when the Air Force One God said "Nelly talk, city listen"? In this case, LA talked and the city listened to me. When I moved back to Charles Village last February, one of my complaints was the complete lack of black hair care stores. CV is a pretty diverse neighborhood (for now...looking at you, yippies and hippies) and I was amazed that in a 3 block radius from my house, there are 6+ black hair salons/barbershops but NO black hair stores. Safeway, CVS and the like don't count - they don't cater to our specific hair needs. So imagine my surprise when one day, I'm on the bus, making my way uptown, riding fast, places passing and literally home bound when I see Beauty Plus. Since it's nestled in between 3 of the previously mentioned salons, I wasn't sure if it was another one, or if the "city listened". Later, I find myself walking up Charles, and I slowed down to see if my dreams had really come true... had I finally garnered the power of a 90's-2000 rapper? Indeed, I had. Beauty Plus was there like an oasis. okay, story time over. So yea, like another reviewer said, you get buzzed in, and the store is a quick flight of stairs up and to the left. It is small, but houses a good variety of products. And the owner, Quentin, was so helpful, but also open to suggestions. There is something really refreshing about seeing and dealing with business owners face to face AND them asking for more ways to better serve the community. I offered the suggestion of increasing the skin care products there and he actually looked up the brand I recommended, Nubian Heritage. That was cool. It was like "my comment wasn't placed in a large pile with others, never to be read and cared about." Nope. tbh, I've had a glass of wine of two before writing this review, but the point is 1) awesome to have a black-owned black-hair care store in the CV area 2) the business owner is friendly, helpful and is filling a hole in this community 3) thrown your money at the store, you won't regret it.
