Made my way to Montreal last month to tackle part of the 50 Best Restaurants in North America List. Beba sneaked in at #50, but honestly, in this gals opinion, it ranks Top 10 in my Beli app! Small restaurant with under 10 tables and a few bar spots. Yes, you need a reservation. If I lived in Montreal, this would absolutely be a once- or twice-a-month spot for me. Our server was wonderful and explained that the menu is designed for sharing. That was really a (nice) surprise, because honestly --- this may be a top 5 best value meal I ever had! We started with the montadito of mackerel with sesame and horseradish. Two pieces to a serving, and I'd say it is a two-bite appetizer. The fish was succulent. Literally melted in your mouth, and the horseradish was fresh, strong, and in all its glory. We also shared a salad of radicchio and escarole with potatoes, bean-aigrette, and pecorino. Really nice portion for two, and for such a simple salad, it was the perfect ease from mackerel into our entree. When we were visiting, we lucked out. Beba had been marinating, massaging, and whatever else one does to make a pork shoulder as tender and delicious as what we experienced. It was a Chef's special and accompanied by some grilled peppers and maitake mushrooms. The portion size was such that (sadly) we had a couple of pieces left over. Literally, I ate until I just could not eat another bite. I cannot recommend Beba more highly. It is truly a gem. read more

Planning with ChatGPT's help, I asked for a place adored by locals, with food that stood out. Beba emerged in that shortlist, and I was enchanted from the moment we stepped inside. Atmosphere & Service Beba's décor feels intentional without a shred of pretension--warm tones, an intimate 28‑seat room, and an open kitchen that frames the cooking like a private performance. The service was equally considered: heartfelt yet polished, guiding us through the menu with genuine care. We chose dishes we were drawn to while letting the staff curate the rest, and the balance between those two felt seamless. Highlights from the Menu Our assortment of plates revealed the elegance of simplicity anchored in complexity: * Montadito de maquereau, sésame, beurre salé et raifort (sesame montadito with Japanese mackerel, salted butter, and horseradish)--a sublime reinterpretation of fish on toast, with nuanced textures and flavor layers that lingered. * Involtini de courgettes et bette à carde, yogourt et noix de pin (zucchini and chard involtini with yogurt and pine nuts)--the "thing wrapped in a leaf" manifested as tender pasta-like rolls that spoke of Mediterranean finesse. * Os à moelle avec pan con tomate et anchois (bone marrow with pan con tomate and anchovy)--incredibly rich, abundant, and gloriously unrestrained--a decadent, fatty indulgence that felt indulgent in the best way. * Dattes farcies au foie gras, pistaches et huile d'olive (dates stuffed with foie gras, pistachios, and olive oil)--the notes I have simply surrender to calling them the most incredible dates; sweet, savory, and texturally perfect. By the time our chop d'épaule de porc avec aubergines à la charcutière (pork shoulder chop with eggplants à la charcutière) arrived, we were near full--but such was the generosity of the portions and richness of flavor that we polished every morsel. With no room left for dessert (though I heard whispers of a silky flan with dulce de leche that teasingly escaped us), we exited contentedly sated. Despite the outstanding caliber of ingredients, thoughtful technique, and warm ambiance, the bill arrived without any staggering shock--refreshingly reasonable for an experience of such quality. I felt deeply grateful for this birthday meal: every plate, sip, and moment is now etched in my memory. Beba is that rare type of place: a neighborhood restaurant that feels elevated yet accessible, intimate without being precious. It earned a place in the Michelin Guide's "Recommended" list for its polished, ingredient‑driven cooking unfolding without pretense. I will absolutely recommend it whenever I recount our Montreal trip. Great neighborhood restaurant. Went by myself worried that there were multiple items I wanted to try and it would be too much food. To my relief, they offered (without asking) that most of the dishes could be in half order, which was perfect. My favorites were the mackerel, you have to get it, and the date stuffed with foie gras. Both were incredibly unique and incredibly good. The knish with caviar was also something I never envisioned that also worked well. While the beef cheek was also good, it was not as insanely unique as the other three dishes. Would love to go back. read more

I really wanted to love Beba; it had come highly recommended by friends. Both my husband and I enjoyed the food, although we definitely had to maneuver around some ingredient preferences on the menu, which reduced our options a fair amount. Still, the food we did order was good and in places, great -- such as the creamed spinach and red wine sauce served with the pork chops. But what drops this to three stars for me was the owner. This gentleman stood and conversed with the family at the table next to us. Because of the acoustics of him standing next to and almost above me, I could hardly focus on my meal and my dining partner's conversation (or hear what my husband was saying on multiple occasions). I heard this fellow go on and on about Argentinian cities and different wines and wineries and people he'd hired, etc. I couldn't NOT hear his conversation. It started as a bit of a joke; I mentioned to my husband after he'd been standing there for not less than 20 minutes -- "How much longer do you think he's going to stand there?" If I'd only known. He remained there throughout the *entirety* of our meal, and as we paid the bill, I asked our waitress, "Is that the owner?" (I couldn't figure out who else had that kind of free time on their hands at a restaurant) and tilted my head toward him. She confirmed that he was the owner. He was still in the same spot, chatting away as we left the restaurant. An extremely bizarre situation; maybe it only affected our table, but it certainly made our dining experience awkward. read more

Every dish we ordered was a home run. The menu is short and sweet, which I love. Montadito: This was simply an explosion of flavor in my mouth. The mackerel was so fresh. The bread was perfectly crunchy. It was even better than some of the tapas I had in Spain (albeit way more expensive). Bone Marrow: Bone marrow is always good. What really elevated this dish was the pan con tomate. The anchovy added even more umami. Amazing balance of flavors and textures in this dish. Octopus: Octopus was seared to perfection. I could really taste the flame-grill the moment I bit into it. Sauce was excellent. Pistachio Semifreddo: A wonderful way to end our meal. This dessert is what our waitress recommended for "dessert lovers." It's sweet and creamy and decadent. Definitely not too sweet, either. Service was Michelin-level. I do hope they get included in the upcoming Michelin guide fro Montreal. They were refilling my water as soon as I took a sip. What a nice, intimate place to to have a good dinner. I was so impressed by the service, the close attention, and of course the food. Often when eating alone on business trips, servers don't pay much attention to you since the bill is only for one. This was not the case here. The waiter went over each item of the menu in detail, which was very much appreciated, and certainly changed my anticipated order. I tried the empanada, the tonnarelli, and a caviar appetizer not listed here that was pricey (as expected) but incredibly delicious and worth every penny. Very unqiue place . I walked into without even knowing much about it . I was blown away by their food . Everything was delicious and very fresh . You can feel that every plate is very well thought and made with high quality ingredients. The drinks were very good , just that a few of them looked/tasted the same just the price was higher in some . We thought the server didn't heard us right as the drink looked exactly the same and when we confirmed she responded in very condescending /sarcastic way saying is around the same type of alcohol so of course is gonna look the same what were we expecting.However overall we enjoyed our experience, not a place I'll go back to be honest , but I did definitely enjoyed trying this type of place and food . read more

Loved this tiny neighborhood gem. Saw it on the top 100 Canadian restaurants list and was in town, so decided to come check it out. Luckily for me, the person next to me at the bar was also a lone diner and we decided to share dishes so we could taste more things. I started with the lost lake drink which was quite delicious, very tropical flavors. Our first dish was the tuna capellini, which was an off-menu special. This was by far my favorite dish, chunky pieces of tuna on top of a bed of capellini tossed with sweet crushed tomatoes, and I don't even like tuna! Mackerel and empanada were other highlights - loved the mouthfeel of the mackerel and how it balances with the creamy spread on the bread below. The empanada was piping hot, filled with flavorful chorizo and soft chunks of potato. The involtini and beef ham were too salty for my palate. Also felt the involtini was overwhelmed by the pine nuts on top. The tautog was a very toothsome texture, almost like monkfish, but cooked perfectly. However, the sweet tomatoes and lightly flame-kissed zucchinis underneath stole the show. I liked the food in general, though a few were overseasoned/unbalanced. A wonderful little oasis in a cute neighborhood that we went to last weekend after trying to work off the St. Viateur bagels that we had for lunch. It's a small space, but it doesn't feel tight, and they open the garage door, which makes for a nice air flow (but also for more bugs). There's a solid wine and beer list, and while the menu is limited (preferable, in our minds), there are a wide variety of options. We started with their well-known mackerel dish, which one of us loved, but another one of us felt more muted about. It's essentially a play on a smoked fish bagel, which we had just had, but one of us found the mackerel too thick and "fishy", but the other thought it was excellent, and both welcomed the use of horseradish. (The dish--and actually almost everything we ate--needed just a few more flakes of salt on the top, but that could also be our personal palate preference.) The radicchio salad was incredible--perfect pecorino crumbs and the more precisely welcome cutting of cucumbers. So, so good. Our main was rabbit, a favorite indulgence of ours when we see it on menus, but we really do not love not have it deboned beforehand. Yes, yes, we know that's how it was intended to be prepared, but damn, it's a lot of work! Another wonderful and brilliant pairing with a generous amount of morels and asparagus and a heavenly sauce. It would have been nice to have a small something on the side to eat the sauce with... Dessert was a pistachio semifreddo with chocolate that was seriously out of this world with an incredible depth of flavor and consistency, and a mountain of pistachio on top. We finished it off with a glass of Blanton's Reserve (you can't get it in the States), so it was a wonderful end to the meal. Service was attentive, fun, and efficient. Details mattered here: there was bussing, wiping, mis-ing, and a general feeling of conviviality in the air. It's a special place, that much is clear. 4.5 stars, rounded down to 4, but we would enthusiastically suggest making this an eating destination if you're in Montreal. read more

This is a must visit restaurant in Montreal. I was blown away by both the food and the experience. The service was not only friendly but intensely knowledgeable. Someone was always around to keep us engaged, and every single dish ranged from wow to HOLY ****! Do yourself a favour, and when you go here, get an empanada. I haven't had a lot, but I can guarantee at the minimum it will be delicious. In fact, I found myself wishing I'd bought a bunch for takeout so that I could have them the next day, and perhaps the day after that. I could wax poetic about all the food, but some of the greatest highlights for me in no particular order: 1) Wild Trout caught by Ontario's Affinity Fish, who ikejime their products to ensure a really high quality offering. Over two months later and I can still remember the wonderful crispy skin, and the incredibly clean flavours of the fish 2) Fresh Foggy Shoals Squid a la plancha with potatoes, peppers, garlic oil and aioli. Squid cooked properly has a wonderful texture that is not rubbery at all, and it's really fun to eat with that slight bounciness. 3) Pork Shoulder Chop: I'm a very clean eater when I eat outside. I hate getting messy because it's less convenient to go to the washroom, and you look like a slob. But this bone-in cut of meat was so juicy and decadent that I couldn't help myself (especially after encouragement from the staff). I picked that bone up like a barbarian and gnawed away at it because it was above and beyond the normal pork you'd expect at a restaurant. 4) That flan! Rich with the flavour of cream and vanilla, loaded with fresh blueberries, and a velvety smooth texture. I wish more restaurants here would do this, and that they all did it at least 75% as well as Beba in preparing it. I would be a very happy (and very fat) man. My goal is to visit Beba every time I come to Montreal for an extended period of time. I will fight you for a seat, you have been warned. read more

Beba is an Argentinian restaurant, tucked away on a small side street, off the main Wellington street in Verdun, Quebec. On the menu: * Spinach and cheese empanadas (Spinach, cheese curds and béchamel) (3 Pcs) * Chicken chile verde empanadas (Chicken braised with jalapeño, tomatillo and cilantro) (3 Pcs) Deliciously crunchy, golden, layered dough with generous amounts of succulent filling. Don't know how they manage to make the dough so magical, but you'll definitely develop some cravings for these empanadas once you get to try them. Beba is the best restaurant I have been at recently, our dinner was such an incredible pleasure, celebration of good food, inventive deliciousness, surprising flavors. The service is also amazing, end to end attention, the plates are changed for every subsequent dish served at the table, which is wonderful as the specific tastes would not mix. For those craving a real authentic Pisco Sour, this is the place to have it in Montreal. The list of organic wines is great for exploration, we resorted to the help of our host for a delicious pinot noir. The menu changes continuously, even the flagship empanadas will be of different flavor on different days. We truly and happily indulged in Beba. The empanadas are must try. We also had the grilled octopus with white beans, this was an amazing surprise, followed by the gnocchi with ragu sauce, super delicious. Last but not least came the main dish of a whole fish and steamed clams, accompanied as per the recommendation of our host with an amazing winter salad. After all this food we were reluctant to have a dessert, but fortunately ended up ordering the the flan with dolce de leche and whipped cream. This was the perfect way to end the dinner, the flan was outstanding. Beba has a special vibe, it is a relatively small bistro like restaurant that should be more intimate, but in a matter of fact is somewhat noisy and full of energy. One of my fave restaurants in all of Montreal! Not only is the food and wine delicious, the service is great, and the ambiance is amazing! Tonight was my third visit and we let the chef take the reigns; we enjoyed the foie gras and goat cheese entree, the cheese and butternut squash, the spaghetti and beef ragu, and the fluke and mussels as a main. Everything was delicious. The pasta was especially fantastic; we loved the breadcrumbs in the sauce for texture. The suggested wine was perfectly paired and to our taste; also very affordable! We finished with tasty pear compote and flan for dessert; the dulce de lèche on the flan was so freaking yummy!! The service was great too! TLDR: just go and enjoy every bit of your evening. Date night or group event, this is well worth the price. We booked a table for 12 for my birthday and they kindly accommodated with a group menu for $60 per person. At first I was a little cold about the fix menu and price but oh was I wrong. We were seated 5 minutes after our arrival. The restaurant probably holds 25 places in total so we were taking up much of the space. Open kitchen and bar. I started off with a negroni sbagliato. Sbagliato means wrong, as it was originally created in error. This negroni is different than a regular one because it does not include gin but has champagne instead. Our table also shared 2 bottles of organic raw wine recommended by the waiter. Great pairing. They have a short list of Harricana microbrewery beer, which is nice. The raspberry one is very refreshing. The group menu was composed of everything of their menu, in sharing platters. I can't begin to describe how amazing the food was. Each of the 5 services was perfect. My favourite plates were the beer rib, so juicy and tender, with chimichurri spicy sauce & the creamy polenta with corn and mushrooms. All the other plates were as amazing and I even forgot to take a picture of the raspberry and almond clafoutis dessert. The owner was waiting our table and took care of us very well. While I call Pointe-St-Charles home, I am lucky enough to be close by from Verdun and the booming restaurant scene that is developing along Wellington street. As that neighbourhood has changed and developed, we have seen more and more interesting restaurants establish roots in the area that have some great pedigrees. Most recently, we have the case of Beba, a restaurant on Ethel - just off Wellington - that was started by the Schor brothers, Pablo and Chef Ari, who have some great bonafides including the fact that Chef Ari was Chef de Cuisine at Liverpool House prior to opening this restaurant. With a pedigree like this, I couldn't wait to walk over and see what they had in store for us so I called my sister who lives in Verdun and she joined my wife and I for a nice evening dinner. Beba has the look of a real neighbourhood bistro. The interior is very clean with simple modern touches such as the marble countertop bar, the circular mirrors along the wall and leather mid-century style banquettes. There is also a garage door on the side which allows to really open up the space in the summer. They also have a nice little terrasse in the front which faces Ethel street which makes it very calm and relaxing as a spot. The weather was so beautiful that night that we got a chance to sit outside for our meal - perfect conditions to enjoy a hopefully great meal. Beba advertises itself as serving 'food and drink inspired by the Spanish and Italian cultures that settled in Argentina' which is an interesting premise and a big difference from the Liverpool House fare that people know chef Schor for but one that reflect he and his brother's Argentinian heritage. The three of us decided to share a bunch of different items from the menu. The menu is apparently adjusted frequently so it is subject to change. First up, we had the beef and olive empanada. A classic Argentine item - a nice flaky crunch to the pastry shell and the interior filing was quite flavourful. More beer in flavour than olive which I appreciated immensely. Next was the Swiss chard involtini with zucchini, pine nuts and yogourt. An interesting presentation and usage of Swiss chard. Very flavourful dish - I enjoyed the freshness of the veggies and how that paired with the creaminess of the yogourt. Our final starter was the green salad served with egg, summer vegetables and grana padano. A very simple dish in presentation but a perfect usage of the seasonable veggies available,. This was a beautifully fresh salad with a nice balance of acidity, sweetness and some richness. I rarely order a green salad at a restaurant but this one was well worth it. We moved to the 'bigger' dishes of the night and started the gnudi with tomato butter and pecorino. This was the biggest hit of the night. The gnudi were light and fluffy in texture with a lovely creamy rich flavour. The tomato butter was insane - so smooth and rich of flavour. The pecorino provided some bite to the dish. We lapped this up and I would go back to Beba just for this dish. Next was the eggplant served with a lamb ragu and peas. I really enjoyed this dish - the star is the hearty lamb ragu which had tons of that gamey richness that I love about lamb. The eggplant was good but somewhat hidden by the strong notes of the ragu. The peas provided some crispness and the little sauce a little acidity and brightness to the plate. A solid dish all around. Our final dish was the rabbit 'pan con tomate' served with an aioli and a mussel escabeche. I loved the different usage of the classic spanish 'pan con tomate' dish to serve the rabbit. The garlicky aioli with the tomatoes, the mussels and the rabbit paired very nicely together. The rabbit itself was excellent - the one complaint is more of the presentation one. By having the rabbit pieces still on the bones, it made it more of the hassle to enjoy the rabbit with the tomato bread itself which meant that the dish was eaten more in two parts then all together. The flavours were excellent outside of that minor complaint. All in all, Beba was an excellent experience from beginning to end and is a welcomed neighbourhood spot close to home. The dishes were delicious. The service was sharp and friendly; and the atmosphere was a perfect combination of hip energy with a relaxed neighbourhood haunt vibe. This was a last minute decision and not knowing where to go eat we decided to pick a place off the grid. Great choice! Argentinian food! Verdun on a quiet corner, small but cozy and a great vibe soon as you enter.Greeted by a Host and asked for our passport with ID for confirmation of the vaccine. The menu was small with few choices but that's what I love about places like this one. You had choice of fish, seafood, lamb and duck.We were also told that the menu can change at any time. My choice was Duck with corn and chilli verde, which was wonderfully spiced. The duck was succulent and served with zucchini with a sauce that brought everything together. The service was wonderful and the background music just added to the experience. To end the night we had a dessert, blueberry tart with a creamy cheese for the finale. I had a great experience with this restaurant. We were there for 7 but we made reservations which I recommend. Hopefully we will have a chance to visit this place again. Described as a mix of Argentinian, Italian, Spanish, and local/seasonal Quebecoise with an emphasis on shared plates - Beba definitely lived up to that and more.
