I have come to Beck's a few times over the years and was always satisfied but today I had a totally dIfferent experience. I called a few weeks ago to get a quote on brakes for my 2014 dodge van. Whoever i spoke with said $150-$250 depending on if the pad and rotors need to be replaced. So based on this i scheduled an appointment. Today I drop my car off and find out that it will be $45 to look at the brakes and then they call and quote me $450 and that is not replacing anything but resurfacing the rotors and flushing the brake fluid. But after calling other places i was told that if you resuface the brakes the pads have to be changed but they are saying they don't have to. Another shop said if you don't you'll be back in a few months to replace them. Seems like a way to get more money. I was shocked when i heard $450 based on what i was told a few weeks ago. When i questioned why i was quoted that price he said he spoke to the owner and service manager and they laughed, like i made this up. I assume they were pricing per axel but i was not made aware of that when i called and i am not a mechanic so I would have no idea. So i paid them $45 for nothing bc had i known the actual price i would have waited or did some more research. Of course, i understand that quotes can change but this is a pretty huge difference from what i was told. And then to treat me as if this was my problem. I won't go back or recommend them to anyone again! In response to his very professional response.....My mechanic friend was other shops in Lafayette. I'm so glad the Lafayette area has a trustworthy/honest car servicing business. My tires had been making a noise which had me worried so I took it in to see what the noise was. They didn't charge me at all for any of the check up stuff! Both the noise inspection and wheel alignment test were free and when I asked to get the wheels aligned, they charged around $98. That's a little more expensive than usual but it's close to the ball park and the service was so excellent that I didn't mind. I'll be taking my car here for sure for car trouble! read more

*** UPDATE on 3/4/2014 *** OK, so I published the review below just yesterday. This morning I received a voicemail from Rob Hancock, the owner. I returned his call on my lunch break and am very happy I did. We discussed the details of the situation even though it occurred well over a year ago. He said to me "I wish you would have just called me so I could have had the opportunity to make things right" and I feel like he did just that with this conversation. This is a lesson learned for me from a customer standpoint - businesses need us to tell them when they have not met our expectations so they may make corrections for the next customer. Today was the 1st time he and I had actually talked about this. Rob seems dedicated to delivering quality care to his customers and I honestly believe he would have made things right, had I given him the chance. That's my mistake. Had this review actually posted when I initially wrote it in the week after the "alignment", I'm confident this guy would have actually taken care of the situation. Rob didn't ask me change this review or up the Rating any. He actually asked me to leave this review up so he could provide some feedback/insight for his loyal and new customers. Don't make the same mistake I did and take to the internet without trying to resolve anything. *** Original Post on 3/3/2014 (revised) *** I was quite possibly more frustrated with this place than if I were working on my own car without any tools. Because they couldn't figure out the few total steps to align the front end of a 1986 VW Golf, I was forced to pay approximately $600.00 labor for an alignment and my keys... This happened around August or September 2012 and I have since moved away from Lafayette, but this was the worst experience I have ever had, so I felt it's probably best I share. Some insight into the situation: I am no certified mechanic, but I know how to work on my vehicles and I owned/followed the Bentley Repair manual for my vehicle when I did work on it. I replaced a bad power steering rack, the hoses from the rack to the pump, ball joints and tie rod ends, and sub-frame bolts without any issues. I even aligned the vehicle following some of the most basic methods. The methods are really only effective on a simple car like this 86 VW Golf. I became convinced to get the alignment as shops have "special tools" and can get all the angles mapped out for a" perfect alignment". This was total BS. I dropped the car off and received a call later that they were having some issues and it would be an extra day. The next day I got the same thing. The next day I got the same again and when they "got it as close as they could", I was told that the labor was going to be a bit much, but they justified it as their Tech's did the "best they could". Also total BS. They made me pay $600 dollars and gave me a car that drove straight, the driver wheel was perpendicular to the group by eyes view, but the passenger side front wheel had the degree of camber similar the rear wheels of a "stanced" Honda Civic. Unfortunately the car suffered a starter issue and had to be parked for a week or so while I recovered from the costs of the worlds worst alignment efforts. With the car on jacks and the starter issue resolved, I checked the passenger side wheel only to find the bolts that hold my control arm to the strut tightened to torque specs achievable by a 1st grade underweight schoolgirl. I could move the entire assembly around with very little effort. THIS is the reason they couldn't get it aligned. At this point I took it upon myself to follow the write up previously mentioned and properly aligned my vehicle in 20 freaking minutes. With everything tight and no longer a death trap, I took the car out for a drive and it drove perfect. I drove this car daily until last month when I sold it to purchase something newer. It had no toe-in, no toe-out, no camber, no caster - all accomplished using primitive techniques and basic math, measurements, and tools. Take a look back at my update on this shop. Becks provided good quick and friendly service however they get a three star rating for charging outrageous prices on the parts they use I could have bought the same parts from rock auto for half the price. Rock Auto is local somewhere the same as the middleman out of Indy. If they are interested in growing the business they should look into not charging loan shark prices for the parts They put on your car. If I can buy them for cheaper I know they can they just charge outrageous prices because you have no other choice. This common practice with car repair. They were cheaper than Midas. read more

I took my car in for an oil change and had a great experience. The service was relatively fast, and the owner was friendly and helpful. Unlike experiences I've had with other mechanics, they didn't overcharge me, and they didn't try to push any unnecessary services (like "topping off fluids"). The owner was also very thorough in explaining my car's unique requirements (it has a fuel-efficient engine, which requires an uncommon type of oil and filter), and he gave me all the information I need in case I want to buy the oil and filter myself in the future. Also, they had wifi, so I was able to work while I was there. I will definitely be back next time I need a mechanic. read more

I went to Beck's for brake light issues as well as a squeaking noise. Everyone who interacted with the customers (myself and the 5 others that came through) were extremely courteous and provided excellent customer service, which is a bit rarer when it comes to auto shops. Given that I was over 30 minutes late to my appointment, the 1.5 hours it took was relatively expeditious. They found what was wrong with both, made sure I knew the costs & I gave them a go, and then fixed them. Cost was more than reasonable, as well. 28 dollars and change for new brake lights, lubing of my fan belt, and the labor. Completely satisfied, will come here in the future. Until my recent repair experience at Becks I'd thought I had found a shop that I could trust without any hesitation. I had been using them for the past three years with success and felt they provided great service. Last spring they repaired my brakes ($700 including rotors), and I was pleased with the entire process. However, my last trip has pretty much extinguished the trust they'd built. I knew I needed a new alternator, and had the car towed to Becks. They were backed up due to the holiday, but I decided to go ahead and wait on their schedule since I felt they would do the job right. They replaced the alternator, but called to say that the car was still not starting and said they did not know what was wrong. I asked them to do some basic diagnostics and get back in touch with me. The next time they called, they indicated they'd gone ahead and replaced a temperature sensor for $163 (without my approval, but at that point I still trusted them), and that the car was ready to go. When I arrived to pick up the car I took it for a drive around the parking lot. It was evident that the car was idling very high. I asked at the desk about the idle, and they had a mechanic take it for a ride. He agreed that the idle was too high and opened the hood. The first thing we both noticed was a hose that had been left disconnected. He quickly reconnected it and started looking for a source of a vacuum leak. He thought the source was another hose which they'd taped up rather than replace after clearing it of gunk. I then offered to order the hose and other parts needed to fix the vacuum leak, brought the parts to them two days later, and they promptly installed them. As I drove the car home, the engine felt as if it was going to stall as I coasted towards a stop. But I made it home (about 4 miles) with no more glitches. However, the following morning the car would turn over but immediately stall. I promptly called Becks and their only suggestion was to take it to another shop. This reply was not one I would expect after paying $600 for repairs. It especially was not one I would expect a reputable business to give a loyal customer who had never complained about their service or billing. I am still very surprised at the treatment I received. Leaving a hose loose, telling a customer the car was ready to go even though it was obvious the idle was way off, and then simply dismissing a loyal customer who expected a car that would start the following morning by saying "find another shop," was not a response I would ever have anticipated. My car is older, but not difficult to repair. It has an on-board diagnostic box, and it is not a difficult process to read the engine fault codes even though it doesn't interface with a scanner. I feel like Becks just wanted their $600 and were more than happy to send me on my way with a car that was not properly repaired. read more

I do all my own routine maintenance and it has been quite a long time since I've paid for a mechanic's services without first doing my research to gauge how difficult the job would be to do for myself. I'm very wary of shops that I have no experience with. When I moved the fam out here the only 2 shops I know and trust in the state were 70 miles south and 80 miles north, respectively. I needed band-aids for my wife's 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. It had problems I knew about and engine codes that suggested other problems were present. I looked at Yelp, made my best educated guess, and made an appointment with Beck's. When I took the car in my agenda was to replace the universal catalytic converter with a new universal, replace an oxygen sensor, and resolve why power was not getting to the A/C system. They took a look and came back with a quote for me. The oxygen sensor was quoted at a much higher price for the than I had remembered paying the last time I had one replaced and I put that repair off for the next week. They discovered that the coolant system needed a new internal thermostat and advised me of cylinder misfires detected. I elected to replace the cat and have them look into the AC system since I already knew that the most expensive parts of that were functional. They got the repair done and confirmed that the AC system wasn't getting any power. While they did that I took advantage of the coffee (decent), and wifi to look into the cost of the O2 sensor. I was relieved to see the last sensor I had replaced costs about half as much as the currently malfunctioning one. At this point I'm feeling more comfortable about these guys; cautiously optimistic in other words. Next payday I go in for the priority fix: the thermostat. My quote was for about $250, which is how much that job should cost according to parts cost and labor. When I realized I had waited 45 minutes longer than I had anticipated, I wasn't too surprised. There's a reason why I didn't even consider doing the job myself. Volkswagen made the fourth generation Jetta to take a lot of prolonged abuse and neglect without breaking down but they also engineered a few aspects of the sedan that fail spectacularly and suddenly should the particular equilibrium of that aspect be disrupted. The coolant system is quite unforgiving and you can't find reliable how-to sources that don't go out of their way to warn you about how easily air becomes trapped in the lines when you're doing a simple drain and fill. Even though the job required some extra labor I was charged exactly as much as I was quoted. I felt like that cautious optimism had paid off. I waited for the car to return from the road test and drove off pleased. I drove a few miles down the highway to the edge of the city to pick my wife up from work. We were close to the entrance to Walmart a quarter of a mile away when the warning system alerted me that I had about 10 seconds of drive time before the car would start driving on borrowed time. I pulled into the parking lot a bit stunned from surprise. My head was swimming with what if scenarios when I called the repair center feeling somewhat like a small child who wanders off the path and loses his tour group. I was hesitant to drive the car back to the service center so the mechanic who did the job drove to us just before quitting time. He quickly identified the issue and was apologetic and grateful that we understood that this wasn't a careless mistake. Sometimes sh** happens no matter how good you are and regardless of experience and care. Although he thought the issue was resolved he wanted to take the vehicle back to the shop for more confirmation. Beck's paid for our rental car in advance and we were driven to the Enterprise closest to our home. The car was ready for pick up on Monday as expected. Nothing says more about an auto repair establishment than the grace with which they handle a mistake and these guys took care of us with integrity and professionalism. That same week I had the oxygen sensor replaced and my check engine light remains off today, 3 weeks later. My wife just discovered a nail in one of our tires. My first instinct is to shop around the best deal like I always do. I know that the best deal on auto repair is getting the work done by a mechanic at a fair price who works at a shop that stands by their work. read more

Great service, very helpful staff and a detailed, thorough report on the car, for a nominal price. I went in without an appointment, and they were kind enough to service my car without any notice/appointment. They checked the cabin air filter (maintenance log suggests replacing it every 7500 miles) and found it to be extremely clean, hence no need for a replacement. It was very refreshing (and surprising) to hear an honest assessment in a car service center. I'm pretty sure most other service centers would have charged me for this without actually replacing. Will definitely visit again for my future servicing needs. Purdue students can avail a 10% discount, but you must let them know in advance, before the service is done. On top of this, every fifth oil change is free! Location tip: It is construction season, so it might be a bit more difficult to enter via US-52. I went here to get a stuck bolt extracted. Everyone was courteous and professional, and I was in and out in 30 minutes with minimal charge. The only wrinkle is that when I tried to use a yelp voucher, I was required to show both paper and digital copies (I had originally just brought a paper copy). This isn't a complaint or anything, but I just don't think the staff was very knowledgable about how the redemption process is supposed to work (the vendor is supposed to enter the voucher code on their end in order to mark it as "used"). Went in to get a coolant leak checked on my Pontiac G6. They quickly diagnosed the issue and fixed my car, putting in a new radiator and lines. While this is not a quick fix on my car they had it done within a day. They also did a check on the overall health of my engine and provided photos of things that may be an issue in the future. Beck's is really the only place to go in town if your car is having problems. Their prices are reasonable and service is exceptional. read more

I tried them because a local dealership had quoted me a $7k engine replacement and I was seeking a second opinion. Even if the ultimate solution hadn't gone my way ( $89 bill to replace the oil sensor!!!) I would still think very highly of the business and the people who work there. Just outside Lafayette while in transit from Louisville to Chicago, our car began making a horrible noise (the type you stop the car for). Based on fellow Yelp reviews, we took it to Beck's Auto Center where they diagnosed the issue and fixed it within a day. When the check engine light came back on before leaving, they took the car back in immediately and fixed the minor issue that popped up for free. Beck's didn't have to do this but further demonstrates the exceptional customer service they pride themselves on. Horrible customer service!!! Break/Abs light was turning on when driving down hills but would turn back off after getting down the hill. When I took my car in the break/abs light had not come on in a week but I figured I should have it checked out because breaks are important. Guy comes out and tells me while they were checking the sensors two of them broke off. Then proceeds to tell me it will cost over $1000 to fix the ABS system that they broke!!! The first guy just kept telling me I didn't make your car. Which made no sense.....so I asked to immediately speak with a manager. We argued over things for a bit and he ultimately just kept telling me that when I bring my car in to have it checked it is at my own risk, anything that they break while checking things is on me!!! After 30 minutes of arguing the manager said the best he could do was not charge me for looking at (breaking) my breaks and give me 10% off break work. Come to find out later that night Becks has a coupon that's been online for years for 10% off break work. So much for the best he can do.... These guys don't own up to their mistakes and they will take every chance they get to take advantage of you. My ABS/ break light now stays on 100% of the time and I was told when those lights are on my ABS system does not work at all. Don't trust them with your cars! Go to a big business that can handle mistakes that their workers make. If a worker comes out and tells me he broke a part on my car then the business needs to own up to it! read more

The car was dropped off, the communication was great on the quote and they stayed on target with the price. I took my VW here because I was having some issues with the oil system. They were able to repair it quickly and at a reasonable price. When I went to pick my car up, to my surprise, the gentleman at the desk had a packet of pictures of the various things he had repaired. I had a pretty bad experience with this place! They told me the issue with my car was a part that wasn't made anymore.It was for an egr tube that was supposedly rusted and that I had to go to a pick a part place or junkyard to find it.After spending 2 weeks searching high and low for this part on-line I found one on ebay.I spent 40 dollars on this part and come to find out the egr tube is brass...brass dosent rust.We replaced it anyway and nothing changed, my car still ran like crap.When I addressed the manager he said his technicians just went off of what they seen with their eyes.I spent 30 buck on the technician to falsely diagnose my car, and 40 on a part I didn't need.Then he said if I want to reschedule they would try again, but no mention of discount or apology.I decided to try Custom Auto Service and Tune-Up located on 529 N.Earl Ave. And they had my car purring like a kitten the same day.They were very friendly, and I would highly recommend that shop.Turns out I had Spark plug and wire set that was bad, and they had no problems figuring that out. read more

Great place! I was referred to this place by Quicklube, and was fully satisfied with the services provided. Not only were they really quick and efficient with the repair to the Flex Pipe in my exhaust system, they took me out to show me the issue. I've never had a mechanic that took the time to show and explain issues to customers. As I noted, they were incredibly quick. I pulled in a little before 8, and was out of there by 830. My daughter was traveling from Louisville to Chicago when the oil pressure alarm came on while on I-65. AAA towed the car to a mega dealership in Lafayette. I called them the next day and was given an estimate of $800+ just to get the oil pan off. This sounded insane to me so I did a search and found Becks, just a few blocks from the mega dealership. I called and got an estimate of $500+ parts and labor. I had Becks tow the car to their shop. They did a thorough oil pressure check and diagnosed that the pressure sending switch was faulty. Total repair cost, $237, and that included the tow from the other clown's dealership. When I arrived to pick up the car they had also done a multiple point check on the vehicle and suggested a few minor repairs to share with my mechanic back in Louisville. The car made the 4 hour trip fine and is still running perfect. A bonus, Beck's called me on Monday to check and make sure we made it home ok. I could not be more pleased with the service and follow up and would recommend this repair shop to anyone. If I lived in Lafayette or nearby I guarantee they would be my guys for all my auto repair and maintenance. BRAVO!!!!!!!!! read more
