The restaurant week dinner comes with brisket, pulled pork and chicken breast. They all taste like any other bbq meat, no digestion between the types of meat. The chicken breast tasted bland, even with the extra bbq sauce provided. Maybe if the chicken breasts were thighs and cooked with additional charring, it would be more succulent. The brisket we ate was unfortunately extremely dry to the point that my group didn't eat all of it. The point of the brisket had a little fat, but we might have just had an over cooked piece that was very thin to begin with. We had to use bbq sauce in a 2:1 ratio to eat it. Fries were good for adults but too peppery for kids to eat it. The chicken wings were salty and seemed like ordinary fried chicken wings with salt and pepper. The best item we tried was the fried pork ribs which had decent flavor and moisture. But it was gone quickly as you pay by the pound and the quantities seemed a bit smaller after the order is made. If you are from Texas, I don't think you should have high expectations. However I think it's worth another try as I'm pretty sure they can make good meats if all the variables turn out right. The brisket is fantastic! The sides...I expected a bit more from. This place is advertised all around town as the #1 BBQ spot and honestly, if you go off the brisket it is. That is mostly the reason for the 4 stars, but otherwise ambiance is cute, staff are super friendly, but the most important part of food leaves a bit to be desired. Whenever I am in town for work, I always make a point to stop by, have a meal and bring to-go food back to my husband who is eagerly waiting for the most delicious brisket (you can request fatty or lean), ribs, and apple pie brisket baked beans. The first time I came here was four years ago and the brisket was severely lacking. It was dry and not at all tender. I couldn't understand why they promoted their brisket so much and yet it was not very good. I went again a couple months ago and the brisket was fantastic. Super tender and flavorful. While this restaurant is a little out of the way from most of the city, and the inside is about what you would expect from a BBQ restaurant, the food surpasses all the chains in quality, flavor, and variety of sides. I had the brisket and two sides, with a choice of fat or lean. The sides were great according to everyone the group--including my salad because I wanted to skip the carbs that the other comfort food choices had. Really, this has become my favorite BBQ restaurant. We went for lunch on a weekday based on the recommendation of one of our group. The sign outside says they are the best in Madison, and I believe it. I really think the service is top notch, and it has a neighborliness that you don't find at a bold chain by the mall or a business park. They have great sides and plates of meat. Really, this is what you expect. However they exceed all expectations, so don't form any expectations and just go try it. The carry out process was simple, fast, and efficient. MY mouth was watering just looking at their meat fridge. With a variety of sausages, brats, pork, beef, chicken, and sides to take home, it was making me excited about the next time i would go back. The brisket was so so juicy, smoky and tender. Also, we turned the brisket into awesome left overs for a couple days and it held up excellently. Smoked Pulled Pork: Like its name, it was super smoky and tender. Very moist. Excellent with the bbq sauce. Baby Back Ribs: I noticed that often times bbq places not in Texas are generally great at ribs.. First of all, they smoke their meat on average of 12 hours. Secondly, when ordering the brisket, you're asked if you'd like it mixed with fat or even all fatty. No worries peeps, you can also have it without any fat - but that just seems silly. Thirdly, yes, the name Beef Butter is legit. The brisket and pulled pork were so tender it's like butter and yet so flavor full that you only need a little bit of their saucy BBQ - Sweet Amy, Spicy Andrea and Ryno (mild to hot). The sauces (must be ordered on the side for additional cost with take-out) are OK...the hot is not hot enough...medium seems to he the best balance of vinegar, flavor, and heat...it's not too imposing & compliments those charred/fatty bites best The sides of baked beans (reminded me of Busch's canned) and Mac & Cheese (elevated Velveeta?) while not stand-out, stands- up...the traditional style cornbread was quite dry & lackluster...it tasted better cold! We also got some pecan pie and at $6 for a tart sized slice that was actually, visibly burnt...let's pass...I almost never order dessert & this miniscule slice that was overly bitter really did not make the meal round put well... For years I've flown down to Texas a couple times a year, for the BBQ, and always go to 'Top 50' listed places, and bring some back to keep in the freezer to smoke up the entire home by lightly microwaving just a narrow slice of brisket. Beef Butter BBQ does not have the same highly-variegated brisket, with colors ranging from a black rind to different shades of pink and brown that falls apart if you even look at it, or glistening pink/red ribs that explode with wood smoke flavor at every tight but supple bite, but they still do many things well. I probably should have been sure to ask for fatty brisket, but among the 3 meats the lean brisket (not what I crave) had a pleasantly crumbly consistency, a touch of red on the outside monochrome dark inside, and I packed most of it up to take home and use in a pasta. The pork ribs were disappointing as they were grey and flabby, with anonymous flavor. But I thought the tips were great - - they were fatty enough to capture the flavor of the smoke, had great texture, with black barky housing red flaky tender inside and touches of fat that really rounded out a real bbq treat. The coleslaw was chill and chewy yummy and a great complement to the meats; the white mac & cheese is not full of individual flavor, but instead is creamy lumpy fun that also works brilliantly to offset the rich darkness of the meats. None of us ordered too extravagantly (two two-meat plates, one one-meat plate, and one of whatever the special was and one order of cheese curds to split amongst us), and even if we did, that's still $27/person for standard BBQ fare. The staff was extremely nice and when i couldn't decide they suggested I try a combo platter. I decided on the beef brisket (melts in your mouth) and boneless chicken breast. We have ordered take-out many times, but this was my first time dining in. - The SERVICE: Quick, friendly and out of your hair! You order up front, and if dining in, will get a number and someone will bring your order out. You grab your drink and seat yourself. High chairs and booster seats are available by one of the two sauce/utensil stations. - The GRUB: I am obsessed with the rib tips (ordered them 3 days in a row, that means I had them all weekend!) and love their brisket! Both have the perfect smokiness and tenderness. I've also ordered the wings for take out a couple times but they were a bit dry, so didn't think too much of them. Thinking their best fresh, so will have to dine in and get them there next time. Over the weekend, I got the chance to try their brisket and pulled pork burritos--both really highlighted the meats, complimented by rough-cut onions, cotija (?) and avocado. These were skillet-grilled so the tortillas had a good crisp to it. I usually drench my burritos in sauce, but not these babies! They were delish without it. The burritos and came with house made, seasoned chips and salsa--all for a so fantastic deal of $10/$12! Three house made BBQ sauces are also available--options are Sweet, Mild and Hot--available thru dispensers, or pre-packed and labeled from the back (just ask!). In addition to the meats are several sides on the menu (I say, stick with the meats!). They also have a few refrigerators packed with meats "ready-to-grill." Have not purchased any, but will definitely keep this in mind next time we fire up the grill. - The SPACE: Clean, with plenty of tables and good-sized TVs. There are two huge, TVs toward the front-middle, playing live cams in their smoker and fire pit. I thought this was an awesome touch! Bathrooms were also clean. A neat thing I noticed was that there is a changing table in the men's bathroom but not the women's. No--I did not go into the men's room! I saw a sign on the door to the men's room and asked my Hubs (who used it) about it. The women's room does not have a changing table. It came with one pound of meat and two sides. We selected rib tips, brisket and pulled pork. Our sides were coleslaw and baked beans. Now, before I get into the meats, let's talk about the baked beans. They had caramelized apples in them! I've never heard of that before, but I'm here to tell you that it was mind-blowing. So, yeah, the meat. "Tender" does a disservice to the word tender. The brisket pretty much melted in my mouth. My wife, who does not like pork, went crazy for it. The rib tips were so juicy, it all ran into my beard (that's not a complaint). We did something we rarely ever do: we ordered dessert. She had a pecan pie. I had key lime pie. We ate these in silence as nothing else in the world even mattered for those few moments. To top it all off, Beef Butter BBQ caters to the gluten-free crowd.
