Today's visit was everything I'd hoped it would be. At least as far as the protein portion of my selection. Ordered the 2 meat meal, which includes 2 sides. I chose Beef Tips and the Back Ribs. I doubled the White Mac n Cheese for the sides. Meats were awesome, except for the inclusion of several large cartridge pieces which amounted to two mouthfuls being spit out. Delicious and tender inside, and the blackened edges were still absolutely the right finish. The ribs were damned awesome. I just returned to them since finishing the words at the end of this writing. These are hands down, the best I've tasted perhaps ever! Sadly the Mac was both not totally fresh tasting, but not old either. But it was rather pasty, and still tasting of the roux more than the cheese. Pasta was at a good consistency. Wow! I have been to some top BBQ restaurants in my day and the tell all for most is their beef brisket. Patrick from Beef Butter BBQ recently visited us here at Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge and brought down a couple of whole beef briskets. We reheated the briskets and served them to our clients one evening here at the lodge and I can tell you that it was one of the best I have ever had! We were greeted warmly as soon as we entered the shop. They have most of the standards, except for smoked turkey, which is one of my favorites. In order to get a feel for their food, I had the 3 meat platter with brisket, ribs, and chicken and sweet corn bread, and the pulled pork baked beans. My wife had the jalapeño sausage and the same sides. As for the food, it was all served at a proper temp. I'm not sure what they use for wood in their smoker, but the smoke taste is very subtle, as is the rub. I was surprised (and honestly disappointed) that the rub serving was only 2 bones. For us, the smoke and seasoning were so slight that it wasn't to our preference as it could have very easily been out of an oven cook. The cornbread was the hit of the experience. The beans had apples in them, and it was just too much. The ambiance was a very open, family style. I can't say that it was bad. But, it's not what we enjoy as bbq. read more

Been hearing a lot about this place and finally ordered some take out. Personally I think it's more of a 3.5/4 star place, my husband enjoyed the food more than myself. Pros: -Baked bean(apple pie style) -Mac and cheese -Smoked wings; next time in asking for extra of whatever seasoning they put on them. -Ribs- fall off the bone -Sauces- mild and sweet both really tasty and enhanced the meats well. -Pulled pork- husband enjoyed Cons: Brisket- really dry. They asked if you wanted lean or fatty cuts, I asked for a mix. It looked like we got all lean pieces but even those should not be as dry as it was. It kinda just crumbled in your fingers. I would def suggest asking for all fatty pieces. This is why my personal rating is lower; I love a good brisket and maybe my hopes were too high. -Mashed potatoes- jelly like gravy. It was take out and it could have cooled and solidified but still. I'd be willing to give this place another try and cross my fingers for more tender, moist brisket. I have wanted to try this place out, but I had to do some research first with my allergies (allergic to cumin). That said, I found they use simple ingredients to make the meat taste great and the beef fat is the awesomeness! You walk in to order right at the counter, which if you're in a hurry this may not be the best. We got lucky, to be a head of the Saturday lunch rush. I had the Beef Brisket with Kettle chips and coleslaw, plus added sweet corn bread. My husband chose 2 Meat: Beef Brisket and Smoked Pork Tips with Mac and cheese and coleslaw, plus added jalapeno cornbread. Lunch was just under $40, as little pricey for lunch but for the taste of beef perfection as my husband calls the party in his mouth...it was worth it. I am scoring the 4 star on the food, would have given a 5, but noticed something that almost lead me to put a 3! However I wanted to post on the amazing food and not specifically for a worker! As our group noticed a counter worker that was adding the food to our plates, wore his gloves plating all the food! With my allergies, had this been an issue I wouldn't have then able to eat here, as he never changed his gloves. Even worse, he walked out to the dining area, assisting a couple with their tray and still had on the same greasy gloves! Having lived in Austin, it's always been a challenge to find anything close to the brisket that I had while living there...until now. I stopped in with my daughter on a Sunday night and left impressed. Ordering is easy as you choose your meat and your sides as you move down the line at the counter. I opted for the 3 meat plate with the white cheddar mac and cheese and smoked apple pie baked beans. For my protein, I opted for the moist brisket (to me it's sacrilege to order lean), pulled pork, and the smoked jalapeno sausage. The amount of meat that was piled onto my plate was impressive and the quality even more so. Of the 3, the brisket was the best (with the other two running close behind). The meat was rich with a good bark and well smoked. Also, hats off to making the sausage in house. It had a good snap to it with the heat from the jalapeno coming though at the end. BBBBQ puts out 3 different sauces and all three were excellent with the spiciest being my favorite. For my sides, the apple pie baked beans were both sweet and savory at the same time and definitely addicting. The only disappointment was the mac and cheese which I think spent too much time in the steamer drawer with the noodles fusing together and absent the bite the white cheddar should have provided. All in all, a great dinner at a reasonable price point given the quality and quantity of the food and the expertise in which it was prepared. A pretty basic place - peruse the menu board, order, pick-up at the counter and enjoy. We saw the good reviews and knew we had to check them out. I ordered the two meat platter with two sides. Got the beef brisket - mix of fatty and lean, pork ribs, and sides of sweet corn bread and their mac and cheese. The servings were pretty small. The brisket, especially the fatty was excellent. The smoke was subtle. Unfortunately the ribs were overcooked tough and dry. I will skip the ribs next time. Our friends got the sausage and liked it a lot. The sides were very good. Both sauces were tasty but I would rather let the meat stand on its own. Prices pretty typically high like most barbecue places. I would try them again. read more

When I pulled into a nearly empty parking lot at 11:30 am on a Friday, I was slightly concerned. However by the time we left the line completely blocked one of the doors. I had a two meat platter of back ribs and brisket. The back ribs were excellent, super tender and well seasoned. They did not have any bark to speak of, so if that's how you rate ribs you may not be a fan of these. The brisket was only okay, I had a split order of lean and fatty, while I enjoyed the fatty the lean was to dry. Lesson learned, I would stick to fatty brisket only. On the way out I saw what appeared to be beef ribs, they weren't on the menu anywhere, but upon reading other reviews I saw that they were a weekend special. They looked great and I hope to be back to give them a try. I had cheddar jalapeño cornbread and apple baked beans as sides, both of which were good. I like sweeter cornbread so the regular cornbread might have been more to my taste. My only complaint is the layout of restaurant doesn't have much of a flow. People naturally accumulate at the main entrance off the parking lot. The ordering process begins near the door so the line stretches to the back of the restaurant blocking the door. No easy fix for this but blocking a condiment station and entry entrance and exit is unfortunate. Oh, and a mustard based sauce would be slick. This place was amazing! He offered us a sample of the pork when we first arrived...oh man was that good! It cane sauce free and he has 3 different sauces you can add on your own. We tried all 3 and liked all of them, but thought the "crisis hot" was the best. It was no crisis however, so have no fear! Don't skip the brisket, it's OUT OF SIGHT! It melts in your mouth and practically drips off of your fork. We didn't use any knives, we preferred to use our fingers to get in there and play with our food. It was truly delicious. First off, the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about the meats and the smoking process. They even asked what cut of meat my friend wanted. It's also nice that you can either order a sandwich or platter for there or you can get pounds of meat to go. I got the smoked chicken and was highly impressed by the amount of chicken that I got. The chicken was moist and flavorful definitely worth getting, there was just a little to much fat for my liking, but most people would be fine with the amount. I got the mac & cheese and potato salad for my sides and they were both quite good. The mac & cheese was creamy and the potato salad had a good mustard and dill taste to it, which is my preferred for creamy potato salad. My friend got the brisket and thought it was quite good. It definitely had the butter in it, which is exactly what he wanted. We also tried the baked beans with apples which got good reviews and the homemade chips with were also highly reviewed. The reason why this isn't 5 stars is because the service takes a little while, as you order at the counter and the meats are pulled out and cut per order, so super fresh, but slower. You walk in to a deli-style counter where you order and they fill your plate up. It's quick and the service is very friendly. The restaurant as a whole is very clean and a bit of a modern take with southern aspects. We both got the brisket sandwich, with Mac n cheese. While I got potato salad as well, my girlfriend got the chips (each sandwich comes with two sides). I really liked the potato salad. It was one of the better potato salads I have had actually. The Mac n cheese was just ok, and that is the opinion of both me and my girlfriend. Didn't try the chips, but they looked good. Now to the meat of the review (pun intended). We both thought the brisket was very good. It was tender and fell apart with ease. I tried all three sauces (sweet, spicy, and hot) and thought they were all pretty good. I went with the hot one for the majority of my meal. However, when eating the meat and the sauce together on the bread, it just didn't overly impress me. While I've written that some places don't need to wow me to get a five star, I feel different about BBQ places. They have a higher bar to reach to get that five star, but it has nothing to do with the environment or anything else. It is purely just about the BBQ. While this place was good, it misses a star because I cannot say it was great. I would say it is still in the top tier of Madison barbecue restaurants, but it is not leading the crowd. Flew into Madison for work and saw the advertisements all around the luggage carousel, so I figured I'd check it out during the trip. Finally had the opportunity on a Saturday at lunch time. Had the brisket, potato salad, and baked beans. Overall I'd say the bbq was average. The brisket was uneven - some parts juicy, some parts dry. It was smokey, but didn't seem to have much seasoning beyond that. I attribute this to the way it appears to be stored, as the brisket was just "out" at the prep station and not wrapped in foil or anything before being sliced. The potato salad was decent, and the baked beans were very good. I'm not knocking the place, it was good for what it is, just seems the volume isn't there to get the freshest possible bbq compared to a place that will sell out on a daily basis. read more

Very unexpected experience here! I saw their ad in the airport and thought anyone advertising here was desperate for business. Passed by it after leaving the airport and didn't think much about it anymore. When leaving WI we needed to eat before getting to the airport and had some extra time so we came here since I hadn't seen BBQ anywhere else. Staff was super friendly! Food was way better than expected, and I've eaten at a lot of BBQ places. Only think that needed some flavor was the smoked wings. Price and portions were good. So people raved about this place, and we thought we'd try it. We ordered on a Sunday, and maybe the A-Team was off, but this was not good BBQ. Not good at all. There wasn't any smoked flavor to any of it. I get more smoke flavor on my gas grill and smoker box. Tasted like it came right out of an oven! So extremely disappointed, this is BBQ? Worse yet, they forgot about half of the order on a take out-so I'll be calling them for that refund. In a way I'm glad they forgot it, after tasting what we ordered, I don't want it! It felt like I was a judge in a BBQ competition. The bad; -our brisket was at least 45 minutes to an hour over cooked. It disintegrated when I picked it up instead of maintaining that elasticity like it should. Pretty dry. Flavor was average. Brisket is awesome! Different from TX brisket, but really good! It is a must try! Hot links...not so much. Jalapeño cheddar hotlines are a mainstay at brisket joints from Terry Blacks in Austin to Black Powder in NC. These hot links were among the worst I've ever had. They don't even look good. There is a way they should be cut, and they even fail at this. However, the brisket makes this place worth it! Add dill pickle slices as a standard with any brisket ordered and you're there! A north side of Madison gem! I love Beef Butter BBQ's setup. When you enter, there's a full array of sides/meats/etc ready to fill your order, so you get your food fast. The Mac & Cheese was incredible! Many BBQ places only sell a full or half rack of ribs, but here you can get it as one of your 2 meats on a combo plate and it was the perfect amount for me. Well, best BBQ in Madison may be up for grabs right now, and Beef Butter BBQ (a weird name, at best) is making its claim. From my viewpoint, there is a new champ in town. Brisket - tremendous. Back ribs - amazing. Pulled pork - great. Beans (with applies in it!) - superb, and unusual. Ask for a little extra sauce on the side, they don't quite put enough. If I had one complaint: the cornbread side is too pricey. It's hard to get excited to pay $4 for a piece of cornbread. That said, the jalapeno cheese cornbread is pretty good. But more like $2 good :) Overall, we will come back (often), and we will recommend. The place looks kind of crummy from the outside, but inside, it's all business. Rumor has it - these guys used to run Jim's Meat Market before the Kwik Trip bought them out. Not sure if this is true or not but if you were a former patron of Jim's and you know a good hole in the wall joint when you see it, Beef Butter will NOT disappoint. They easily have some of the best barbecue in Wisconsin and without a single doubt in my mind, the best BBQ in the Madison area (though to be fair, Madison lacks good BBQ joints). This blows the competition out of the water by a landslide IMO. I'm a bit of a BBQ snob and I can't stand the bland, un-smoked flavoring many Wisconsin BBQ joints seem to embrace. Beef Butter has a legitimate smokey flavor that really screams authenticity. It's pretty comparable to some of the places I've been to down in Texas and Tennessee (although nothing will ever compare to Hutchins BBQ in McKinney, TX). Most of the side dishes I've tried have been pretty fantastic as well, especially their apple pie baked beans. I've never been let down by the service here. Always friendly, always accurate. They seem to run a clean restaurant and are adhering to social distancing protocols per the recent COVID-19 outbreak. It's one of the few restaurants I continue to trust throughout this pandemic to provide safe and cleanly service. Their prices are a bit high IMO - it's more of a "once in a while" or "after that overtime check comes in" kind of place. It can run about $15-20 a plate. However, it's worth it. read more

Yum. Yes, there are BBQ places in Madison that have good BBQ. But this has great sides, and for me, it's not about the meat. Scandalous, I know, but I'm a rarely-meat eater who has family and friends that do eat meat. This is one of those places that is an easy compromise. I could have a meal out of that mac-n-cheese and those baked beans with apple slices. The beans tend towards sweet versus 'heat.' Honestly, one of their servings is worth two meals to me, but if you are a dude with a big appetite, you'll still be fine. They do a smoky BBQ and then let you chose 3 levels of sauces, which is perfect to adjust for different tolerances of heat. I just go for the chicken, but my dining partners seem to go for the pork. The key lime pie is from the actual Keys and is quite delicious. Customer service has always been excellent. Very enthusiastic and helpful, and will offer a sample if you haven't been here before. After 4 visits, I have found there is a little bit of variability to the quality of the sides, probably based on how fast they have been moving their food. read more

Cons: Three bones is a pretty small dinner portion for $20+ w/tip carry out. Beans were watery, ok flavor but nothing special. Overall the ribs taste great but a taste is all you get. I only tried the beans and potato salad sides and they weren't better than what you'd get from a grocery store deli. I wanted to love this place. I'll probably try it again. The beef brisket was good (very tender and juicy), however, the chicken was too dried and the portion was too small for four people. On my second online order (three meats plate & two sides: one ribs and two beef brisket), the beef brisket was terrible (can't compare with my previous order. They just gave me dried, burnt edge parts of beef brisket). Based on my own experience, the food is over price and not worthy. It could be because I used gift card to pay part of the bill. If you want to give it a try, I would suggest buying the gift card only if you have tried their food so you know what you are getting. In addition, don't order online.
