The stylist I had been going to for many years suddenly left that salon. I found myself in that dreaded situation of finding a new stylist. I had decided I did not want the big box salon, ala carte..and preferred to find a non corporate salon. I began my quest, my research! After carefully studying the reviews ( which were all wonderful), looking at the photos, I decided to try Before & After. I only wish I had known about this awesome salon sooner! As the many reviews stated, yes, the minute I walked through the door I was greeted as family! I was not only greeted by the front desk but also Donna, the owner, who was doing a clients hair, immediately welcomed me by name! My stylist/colorist was and will forever be Joette. She was fabulous. We talked about what I liked, what I wanted, what I did not want. Joette listened , asked questions, explained what she would do in order to accomplish what I wanted. She also told me the price point before hand so there were no surprises, the prices are great by the way! It was apparent there was not a stranger that walks through their door. There was a long relationship with their clientele. All the staff were very friendly. I learned they have been together for over 25 years in their original salon in Midway. I love, love, love the old school atmosphere, but they are very current in their skill set, knowledge, technique, and experience! Donna offered me food, yes, food I'm talking, dips, wings, fruit, desserts, veggies! Even a glass of wine! (Next appointment). Donna is the Italian family members house you go visit! I had such a good experience here with the ladies. Walked in to get a short chop and they were able to squeeze me into their tight schedule. They offer you cookies and coffee and they treat you like family. I filled out a new client card because they keep all of your appointment details on file! They're always asking what it is you want with your hair so that you're satisfied and they make you feel so comfortable with all of your requests. They're obviously very knowledgeable and experienced and they definitely have a lot of repeat customers! 10/10 recommend and would go here again! read more

I am OCD about my hair, just moved to the area, and was very nervous seeking out a new salon. Stumbled upon this salon while searching Yelp reviews, called, made an appt for a couple hours later, and crossed my fingers. All the girls who work here were very warm and friendly. My stylist sat down with me, looked at my pics, listened to everything I said and then totally delivered the best cut I've ever had. I'm allergic to product, she didn't use any! I told her I wanted low maintenance, don't even own a round brush, so she styled it the way I would to insure I was happy with the cut and could achieve the look I was after, on my own! Joette was amazing and I cannot praise her professionalism, her listening skills, and her hair cutting/styling abilities enough. If you made it to the end of this review, I only compliment when a compliment is due and I haven't experienced this level of customer service in a very long while. It is so hard to find (and keep) a good beautician! I was so glad that I was referred to Joette at Before & After. After bouncing around to so many different shops and coloring my hair myself, I really needed an overhaul. I've found my new salon!! I've been looking for the perfect salon since my stylist retired a few years ago and I've found it. I came in today as a walk in. This is a cute little salon and I was greeted right away. Joette took me over to wash my hair and after a nice scrub, sat me down in her chair and gave me the exact cut and style I asked for!! Found this place last year after driving to a nearby hair salon that could not accommodate me. I really needed my hair trimmed and decided to just stop there and test my luck... When Joette was done with my hair I knew I would be coming back to her. She is amazing and has a unique gift of styling my thick needle straight hair, I have never had a hair stylist that was able to give me layers, because my hair is so thick, heavy, and straight you cannot see the layers and I had learned to accept it. I came here because of the pictures of the colors, the silver blonde, the blonde blue ombre, the ice blonde bayalage, and and a few more nice color pics.. luckily the time booked seemed off, they booked me in and out and I was confused, the lady called me back and we couldn't get on the same page so we mutually cancelled until i could come by so she could see my hair. Because of the pics i went out my way to go by (I live 2+ hours away in quad city). I thought she was a silver blonde guru... When I got there to discuss my hair it still wasn't making sense, so I brought up the pics on Yelp and was like but this is you right? "No, that was from a show", this? "No, that's from a hair show also".. literally every pic on this Yelp page that looks dope - no one in this shop did. Best salon I have ever been to! Donna is absolutely amazing! When I get there she literally has thoughts ready of what styles and color she thinks will look great on me and what I will like - I have never gotten more compliments on both the cut and color of my hair in my life! Going to before and after is a fun, uplifting, friendly experience in a caring and upbeat environment. I used to dread getting my hair done because it took so long, but now it's so enjoyable and the results are so great that I look forward to it! I even moved away from the area and still drive 45 minutes to get there - it's just totally worth it! I would say that this salon they aren't friendly at all, according to be a good business the client must be treated nicely , first of all during a really cold day they didn't have much heat in the salon, or the lady didn't say hay you can hangup your jacket , which my jacket and coat are expensive, so I hang it up my self, I was going to get a root touch up, and blow dry. First of all she makes me wait alone with no one there and later put me a plastic to cover my self luckily I took off my vest if not it would have gotten stained. She Ask me what hair color I use dark Bbrown, she got the hair dye in a ketchup bottle , I'm like ok that's work died it, then she didn't even,y distribute it and it started dripping on my face almost in my eye, I'm here waiting finally the bell rang and still didn't come out from the back room, I was afraid my hair will get burnt. The she washed my hair,and all but didn't put conditioner on my hair or leave me with a conditioner knowing that it was dyed. Then she blow dried it and left it wet and it was wet and hard stiff with out the conditioner, the flat ironit, omg my hair looked like it was fried. Worst salon I've been to do not go to get a hair service here. read more

The customer service and personalized attention you get can't be beat. They are always looking out for your best interest and want to make sure you are 110% satisfied. I went in to see Joette for my first time last month. I didn;t have a good idea of what to do with my hair, but I knew I didn't like the current color. She suggested a redish-brown for fall, which was very different than my current blonde highlights, but I LOVE it. The color is rich and shiny. She also did a great cut. I am moving and one of my biggest regrets will be leaving this salon. The atmosphere is so upbeat and friendly that it's like being taken into a family when you're there. There are always goodies to eat and all the regulars bring even bring in their own baked goods. I have been going to Before and After since the mid-90's and have always been beyond pleased at the marvelous results! I had had some very bad experiences at hair salons prior to discovering this gem. I so appreciate that they listen to what the customer wants and seek to make each client leave with a smile. I love sitting there watching people come in, perhaps overwhelmed with the cares of the day and then leave looking refreshed and happy. It is a family oriented place--I have watched little kids get their first haircuts as well as senior citizens get a new lease on life, at least regarding their hair. :-) This new location is easily accessible and the facility is beautiful. They are always up on the latest styles and hair colorings and will offer suggestions to their clients, like they have thought of nothing else since your last appointment. After going to B&A for the first and only time I might add. I have to be honest and say that at first impression I was happy to be in an establishment that was very inviting, friendly and what I thought was knowledgeable. I took my daughter for a hair dye and was let down by the work that was done by hair stylist Joette. We asked for an ombré look and were extremely disappointed to get a choppy uneven bleached job that even after going back to get it fixed was still a huge disappointment!!! I explained whet we were going for and still did not get the results we wanted!! This stylist obviously didn't know how to do an ombré dye and instead made excuses for why it looked how it looked and she couldn't be more wrong. I should of asked for my money back!!!! I will never go back and if you want a good dye job ask to be seen by Donna the owner she seemed to do a much better job from what I saw while waiting there. read more
