...like a swarm of ravenous locusts devouring anything and everything in sight... One weekday while on vacation, my wife and I stopped at Beggar's Pizza in Lansing. Hadn't been there before but drove past a million times so we figured we'd stop in, have a few beers and see what was what. The waitress made the lunch buffet sound inviting. I don't normally DO buffets, not wanting to have to do battle with the usual, greedy buffet crowds but the place was nearly empty so with no real crowd to compete against, we decided to give the lunch buffet a shot. Major mistake! I mean MAJOR! Although we'd arrived nearly an hour before the scheduled end time of the lunch buffet, when my wife and I walked over to the buffet we saw mostly empty plates and dishes there. The amount of food and food choices remaining on that buffet seemed lacking at best. Then we found out why. When I asked the waitress why the buffet featured so little food and so few food choices, I found out that, apparently, the staff are allowed to eat from the buffet at the end of the lunchtime buffet period. Hey, I don't begrudge the staff being allowed to eat leftovers from the buffet after the lunch buffet period is over. I actually thought it admirable that management would allow staff to enjoy the uneaten food rather than simply tossing it into the dumpster at buffet's end but sadly there's a serious problem with this practice. The obviously under-monitored staff doesn't actually WAIT until the lunch buffet period ends before they start chowing down. Oh no, they blatantly jump the gun and begin raiding the buffet well BEFORE the end time actually occurs. And I'm talking about a lot of hungry staff here. I mean a LOT. I swear, they seemed to be coming from everywhere, climbing out of the proverbial woodwork like a swarm of ravenous locusts devouring anything and everything in sight. I saw some staff members return more than once, greedily piling their plates, like, wall-to-wall and treetop tall. With my empty plate in hand, I stood behind a young, male staff member and personally witnessed as he piled, quite literally, each and every remaining brownie onto his plate before silently glancing back at me and then walking away. For our lunch buffet money, my wife and I were left to choose from what little, if anything, remained. This was totally unacceptable. When I complained to the waitress, she offered to have the kitchen make a cheese pizza. Oh boy. I said no thanks and told her to take the buffet off our bill which, after a brief skirmish that involved escalating things to a manager, she eventually did. We paid for the beer, left and went somewhere else to eat. The kind of restaurant where the staff eats before the guests is a restaurant to which I need not return. We haven't been back there since and will never go back there again. read more

I was expecting a big deal as I have driven by here countless times wondering what they did to the interior of this old movie house. Not much! Lay some carpet and slap together a few walls and call it a day! This was Thee Worst Buffet I have ever been to. It actually made up my mind to never go to any Beggars ever again! One old cold buffet that was about 4 feet long with no salad and 5 different toppings. 3 leftover pizzas on the hot side and the pasta in the corner that I wouldn't have fed to my dog. The server we had was Pat. She had a smokers voice and was extremely rude to me, my girlfirnd, and our friends. One of my friends had gotten his wallet stolen earlier in the day, but still wanted to hang with us so he just got a water while the other 5 of us each purchased on of their overpriced meals. However, pat said "you cant just sit here and not order anything. You have to order somthing or you have to leave". The manager ended up saying he could stay, but we all felt on edge every time she walked by. She was quick to bring the check, however. I do like Beggars. The pizza is good and the ambiance of the place is great. When my brother comes to town he absolutely must go there. He orders the thick crust pizza (not my favorite). I go along with him because he's my little brother and he doesn't get great pizza in Atlanta. I like taking my girl there because. It's like a tiny road trip. Downtown Lansing is cute as all heck! Beggars just really sucks now. I had the exact same experience as I did at another beggars. The food is definitely NOT fresh everything is from a can or frozen from out the back of the freezer burgers are disgusting!!!! They are these thick pre shaped dry ass burgers all beggars have then now damn they are so dry please DONT get the burgers you have been warned. The pizza is fine. That's as excited as I get about Beggar's. Table service is slow and servers love to disappear for long stretches at a time, so if you need anything, you'll have to remember to ask for it when your order is taken first, or when your food finally arrives. Last time I dined at Beggar's with my husband, the curly fries we got tasted funny. We did mention it to our server, who looked at us blankly before taking our check. My family and I went to Beggars this past weekend and it was nice. This place is definitely for families because the organist and music is loud which is a perfect setting for a family with children just in case you have to holler at your kids no one will hear you or judge you. My kids loved the music and my husband and I enjoyed watching them dance and be entertained. We went the simple way and ordered a Large Pepperoni and Susage pizza, five dollar pitcher with no refill for the kids and two regular drinks for me and the hubby. I arrived a half hour after the lunch buffet began and the food looked as if it had been sitting since the day before, it was cold, and I really wish I had requested my money back. Disappointed at the portion size of the 3 for $9.95 appetizer. We ordered double curly cheese fries & fried zucchini. What we got were skimpy bottom of the bag broken pieces of fries & 1 cheese cup along with small pieces of zucchini. Manager said the portion was right in size, refused to accommodate us in any way shape or form. Apparently, we didn't specify that we wanted cheese on the curly fries, so they put it in a cup. Beggar's pizza is delish. Ample cheese, decently seasoned sauce, buttery thin (but not too thin) crust... 'bout a centimeter or so thick. Fairly quick service. The huge location in a converted movie theater means my extended family on the east side has every other graduation, confirmation and birthday party at this location. And please, don't leave without trying one of those melty, gooey, oh so delicious chocolate chip cookie cakes with ice cream on top!!! Drool. I love Beggars for a couple of reasons...FIRST...TONS OF CHUNKY SAUSAGE!!! Seriously...there not kidding when they say they pour it on...it's well worth the money...great cheese...nice crust...and a MEATY pizza even if sausage is your only topping...I also love there beef sandwiches...very good...quality bread...very good service when dining in and an hour for delivery on a weekend nite...they always have coupons available online or in the local papers...it used to be an old movie theatre so it's very charming inside...I had my baby shower there..VERY REASONALBE...it was like $200 bucks for unlimited pop and pizza for 40 people including salad and an ice cream scoop for dessert...also...we took my family there after my daughters communion...there were about 15 of us...we did not have any reservations but it was a Sunday afternoon so they put some tables together for us...we had Soda...Pizza...Appetizer..and a cookie ice cream dessert for $100. You have not lived until you've experienced live organ-playing at Beggar's in Lansing, formerly Pipes 'n' Pizza. Lately he's been there on Tuesdays and Fridays, but you should call ahead just in case. Regarding the pizza, they don't lie; they do "lay it on thick," as promised. Average pizza, very salty, mushy. On top of that, the customer service at the Lansing locations is awful. We ordered by phone for a large gathering, confirmed for pick up in 45 minutes. Arrived at the store, took forever to even locate someone to help us. Then, they had dropped the order. Despite having a record of the call on our phone, the disinterested employee condescendingly told us that we called the wrong store (we did not). With a house full of people, had to wait 45 minutes for them to do the order (should have gone elsewhere). It was soggy, salty and for that reason, a large part was left over, which we tossed rather than saving. We won't use Beggars again, at least not in Lansing. Neither will the group of people who were at the house. We actually later tried to placate people by ordering from elsewhere, luckily. Rude staff, bad pizza, no thanks. read more

We love coming here for the live organ music on Tuesday and Friday nights from 6-9pm. Our 2 year old son LOVES coming to "pizza boom" as he calls it to dance and play to the live music and lights. The pizza is just OK. Personally, I'm not a big fan of pizza joints that do thick layers of toppings. To me it looks more like a giant round casserole that you have to eat with a fork. Tonight I ordered online at www.beggarspizza.com a medium thin crust pizza with extra cheese, garlic and gardenier it was...DELICIOUS! The crust was not so thin that it becomes dry and brittle, it was crispy and held my extra cheese like a pro. The cheese tasted super fresh, the garlic was just ok and the gardenier was AWESOME! I would have given it 5 stars but because I ordered online they sent me a confirmation minus the ready pick up time so I had to call them to find out. Well, the food is decent. I have had a meatball sandwich on 1 visit and stuffed pizza the other. The meatballs were tasty and well-seasoned. The stuffed pizza was pretty good even if my friend chose broccoli. Spinach would have been a better choice. The prices are pretty good. The ladies serving the tables are quite friendly and sweet. It was not a spectacular experience as far as true Chicago deep-dish/stuffed is concerned but it was nothing to complain about. They do have a whole experience aside from the food and that is the live theatre organ! The young man that plays has a decent technique and his enthusiasm and knowledge of the instrument make up for some of the missing technique. The service was horrible. Our waitress Kari never came back to check on us. My granddaughter had to wait for her mack and cheese. At least it was hot when she got it . We asked for more pop and never got it. My daughter had to go ask for it. We were finished eating and again she never came back. So again we had to track someone down to get boxes and our check. After about 20 minutes she came to our table and brought us the boxes and our check. We again waited for her to come and get our check she didn't come back. So I was tired of waiting for her started to leave and go pay. She saw I was leaving she walked up to me and grabbed the check and my debit card out of my hand.
