My very old 3 speed cruiser bike that I inherited from my grandmother conveniently broke down on the same block as this bike shop. I have a beloved 1973 three-speed Raleigh that I use to commute to work most days. As loved as it is the bike spends a lot of time outside, even in the elements. The bike can be a bit temperamental and requires a mechanic who knows old Raleighs and doesn't mind working on a slightly rusty, fairly beat up bike. 9 out of 10 times post-fixing my flat bike tire mechanics don't adjust the gears correctly and I'm left with only 2 of the 3. Not the case with Sandra! I went to her shop for my first time last week and had the best experience! She fixed my tire like the pro she is and made a much needed adjustment to my front brake that has made a world of difference on my rides! While it doesn't necessarily look like a new bike, it feels like one and riding has never been better! I'm so grateful that Behind Bars was open for a 9am quick fix. Sandy, the owner mentioned in other posts, is such a gem. She is friendly and makes you feel comfortable. When I took my very old three-speed cruiser in for a tune up, she fixed things that I had tried to get other bike shops to look at, and that they had refused. She got me a new gear shifter, and the brakes are much improved. She called when it was ready to let me know I could come get it earlier than expected, and when I arrived she encouraged me to take a ride up and down the street, test out the new gear she'd installed, and make sure I felt comfortable before paying. Definitely a place I'll be returning for all my bike needs in the future! read more

Behind Bars was so helpful! I brought in my stroller which had a broken wheel. The owner patiently worked on the tire, oiled all the wheels and put air in the tires. When I asked what I owed since it took up @ 15 - 20 minutes of her time, she said it was free of charge. I definitely recommend this repair shop, which was super cute as well! read more

Great experience at this shop - really knowledgeable staff and they treated me & my bike wonderfully. I got a full tune up, cables, brakes and a few other things. Replacements were made with high quality materials rather than saving a few bucks to go cheaper and they also considered the style of my vintage bike, which isn't exactly a museum piece, but I like it a lot. An accident on my morning commute turned out to be really lucky, because it led me to Behind Bars. I wasn't sure what I was going to do when my bike basket bungee net came loose and got wrapped in my cassette, but some friendly bystanders pointed me in the direction of Behind Bars. After getting the bungee and all but one of the hooks out of my cassette, my bike was still inoperable, so I rolled it over to Behind Bars. I was convinced my cassette was done for, but the man working this morning just took it apart, cleaned it up, put it all back together, and made sure everything was in great working order. He had my bike fixed up and I was back on the road to work in less than half an hour, my bike riding even better than it did before the accident! read more

Reasonable prices and truly helpful service from Sandra; she showed me how to strap on my bag to the new rack she installed for me, and even replaced a part of the brake that was cracked for free because she had lots of extras of that part lying around. I came in with a seriously wobbly rear wheel that I had gotten from a different bike store just a month prior. I was concerned that if I just trued the wheel again, it would get out of true quickly again. Sandra offered to true the wheel, and if it quickly got wobbly, she would apply the price of the truing to a new wheel. The lady over there charged me 300$ to put my bike together get the chainring fixed and she DIDNT EVEN FIX it and kept making saying "maybe its this part" she added 300$ worth of new parts that i didnt need. I cant even return the things because theyre on the bike already "used". So now i spent 300$ and my bike still has the SAME problem with my chainring. read more

A true neighborhood bike shop for all types of riders. I was excited to see them open months ago and stopped in for some miscellaneous supplies. I brought my Brompton commuter bike and my endurance bike in for tune ups and they were cleaned up and are running smooth as can be. Prices are very reasonable and the service is top notch. Sandra is as pleasant and knowledgeable as they come. She will give you honest advice and answers to any question and always in your best interests. Brought bike there for a tune up. Had an unexpected surgery the following week and couldn't pick up bike but stopped by letting her know that I wasn't able to get bike right away because wasn't allowed to lift anything heavy for a week, but would the following week. The woman in charge gave me a hard time about it and was in fact just plain rude. Felt costumer service could have been so much better for a neighborhood shop. I went to this shop against concerns from other neighborhood friends that they weren't friendly or helpful... But from what I've experienced so far, I should have listened to my friends. Am happy to go the extra blocks to the bike shop down the road for friendlier, more helpful service like this neighborhood has been to me for 7 years. I wanted to love this place. When I first met with Sandra she seemed attentive and knowledgable. I brought in my road bike for a gear tune up, as well as a three speed Peugeot- that was something of a family heirloom- to be cleaned and rebuilt from the original frame (a process I was well aware would likely cost hundreds of dollars- as I had an emotional connection to the bike I was prepared to make the investment). I first became concerned when I picked up my road bike and, upon first ride, the gears were noticeably more jerky and erratic than before I brought it in. Further, while the Peugeot was a "project" that I understood would take some time, I was surprised after Sandra told me she'd clean it and call me in a week to discuss new parts/next steps, and I hadn't heard from her almost three weeks later. Finally I called her to inquire- she was initially apologetic about the delay, said she was very busy, and that she would call me "early next week" with an update. Another two weeks passed without a word from her. Finally I went back into the shop and told her I was going to take my bike elsewhere. To my surprise, instead of apologizing that she had gone over a month without contacting me after telling me the first phase of my project would take one week, she was defiant, telling me she didn't have time and that she "doesn't rush repairs for nobody, for no amount of money." I tried to explain that my real issue was the lack of professionalism in not being accountable for a deadline that she herself had set, but that point seemed to be completely lost on her. I'm sure Sandra could be a competent mechanic, but her (lack of) time management skills, inability to communicate, and misguided self-righteousness has unfortunately ensured that I will never set foot in Behind Bars again. read more

I came in for a minor adjustment to my bike lock they installed a year ago. Sandra spent about 10 minutes mounting my lock properly. As I was about to leave, she said, "Can I please adjust your helmet? Its not fitting right on you." She spent a few more minutes adjusting my helmet fit. Lady took about an hour to install a basket on my bike. Charged $5 to install it. It then came off about 20 mins into my bike ride and the side rail crashed into the ground. Luckily it wasn't strong enough to provide enough resistance to have me fall off but still dangerous. She was nice to reinstall it for me which took another 20 mins and gave me a refund for installment when I requested it but I would say it wasn't the best service I've received. read more

This shop took care of my three bikes all at once and turned them around very quickly considering the fact that her entire store floor was filled with bikes to be repaired. 'tis the season for bikes! Amazing service, so fast, professional, and educational!! I caught a flat going down 5th ave to work and stopped in here because she was open. It was oddly my lucky day! I used to ride all the time and recently got back on - my bike was in rough shape and she explain why I got the flat (plastic lining on the rim + 95* weather = flat tire). She replaced it with fabric to keep that from happening again. I can't speak highly enough of this shop though - they are knowledgeable enough to fix anything and patient/understanding enough to make anyone feel welcome. Truly an outstanding shop! read more

Went to get air in my tires but had a lot of trouble with the valve. The owner, Sandra, came out and gave me help but the valve was shot. As I was out riding I didn't have a lot of money with me but she said it was no problem and fixed my flat and I was out riding again in no time. And the price was more than fair. I came here in hopes of supporting a smaller shop and sure enough they were nice enough. However I got a new tube and tire installed and all seemed well. One day later, I go over a small bump and the tube just pops. I understand things happen but I have a very hard time believing the bump was the sole cause. I suspect at the instal, the tube might've not been properly installed, which contributed to pinch in the first place. I say this because after years of riding, I know a bikes limit and that bump was hardly enough to warrant a brand new tube and tire to just pop off of it. Based on the short time I got the tube, they didn't even acknowledge that fact or question it at all. After already paying for service, the charged for service again. There was no decency to even try to persuade me to become a returning customer, "accident" or not. Seems to be a shop that caters more for the wealthier and less knowledgeable about bikes. read more
