While browsing the craft stalls at the Portland Saturday market, I began to feel hungry when I smelled the aromas wafting from Beirut Cafe's food cart. Since I was traveling with a group, we decided to share the Falafel combo plate. This worked out perfectly, since the dish is served with four falafel and a variety of sides and salads. Our food was prepared quickly, and upon digging in, I noticed how every component of the dish was seasoned to perfection. While falafel at other places is often dry and heavy, this falafel tasted fresh and herby. It paired well with the smooth and creamy hummus, and I loved how the falafel was heart-shaped! My girlfriend and I got a beef shwarma wrap, pita and baba ganoush, tabouli salad, and a coffee. The coffee and the pita were bad. The rest of the food was fine. Not my favorite, but not terrible. Probably about three stars. But, again, the coffee and pita were bad. The coffee tasted like hot water with a hint of coffee flavor. Not too big a deal though. It's a Mediterranean food cart, not a coffee shop. Coffee is a sorta of tangential item that I don't particularly care about. I want the more central Mediterranean items to be good. Tangential stuff like coffee I could overlook. But man, the pita bread was really bad. It wasn't warmed up at all. And it seemed kinda stale. The pita for the baba ganoush was served inside the same sort of plastic stuff it comes in at the super market too. So it really seems like they just bought some low quality pita at the supermarket and kept it around a little longer than they should have. To me, that's similar to going to an Italian place that opened up a jar of Prego. It's a core item that is foundational to various things (wraps, dips), and is something that should surprisingly good, not surprisingly bad. Seems like a #YouHadOneJob sort of thing, so I think one star is appropriate. read more

Although I unfortunately didn't get many photos of the food this was one of the best food trucks I've ever visited ! Seeing Beirut at Saturday Market previously I was really interested in trying their food . With a traditional Lebanese menu their cousine was exquisite and so tasty . Not only was the food delicious but the service was incredibly kind with father and daughter running the cart today . I pretty much devoured everything on this plate and will absolutely return to try a shawarma wrap . The combo plate included the best crunchy falafel I've ever eaten ( no that is not an exaggeration ) , tahini , side salad , and complimentary pita bread . While eating the owner brought me a really appetizing side of roasted eggplant baba ganoush which really made my experience that much more satisfying . $15 is rather fair compared to other options near by . After surveying the food carts at the Saturday market, we picked this one as having the most potential. The sandwich tasted good; we were just a little disappointed with the preparation. The falafel itself was great, but the sandwich was heavy on salad and very light on sauce. And for something that needs to be eaten by hand; it didn't have much structural integrity, it was collapsing with every bite. Glad we tried it, but not sure if we would have it again. read more

I love Lebanese food so I was excited to see this vendor at the Hillsboro Orenco Station Farmers Market. I just got a hummus, since the baba ghanoush was sold out. I did enjoy the hummus (after bringing it home to eat with bread), which was served with a drizzle of good oil and fresh diced tomatoes. The hummus came with a very disappointing pita bread; thin-style and I don't know if it was a bit stale or what was going on there but it was not pleasant and that's kind of central to the whole hummus-and-pita concept. There is no way that would have held a sandwich together. The to-go wrapping was the plastic bag from the pita bread - I appreciate reusability but if I want grocery-store pitas I'll go to the grocery store. At first, I told my husband the Schwarma Chicken Sandwich was just okay--nothing exciting. My son had the beef Schwarma sandwich. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to write a review. There wasn't much chicken, but plenty of lettuce, onion and some tomatoes. The garlic sauce had NO garlic flavor. The chicken was just okay, and also tasteless. The beef pieces were falling off when I was eating it. I did find it a bit hard to eat due to this. The beef shawarma was good. Better than my partners chicken shawarma. The yogurt sauce was BOMB and I wish they would've put more... the rest of the ingredients were pretty average but not bad. It is a bit messy to eat and be careful not to drop any like I did. While wandering around the Saturday Market, I thought that this place looked interesting and decided to give them a try. I asked the guy manning the booth which was better - the chicken or the beef. He replied that replied that he would give me both. He put a reasonably generous portion of the beef and chicken into the pocket sandwich. Unfortunately, neither meat was any good. The sandwich included onions, bell pepper and lettuce. The sauce was pretty good but wasn't enough to make up for the bland flavors of the meat. I tried the halal beef sirloin shawerma sandwich/gyro at the Portland Saturday Market, and got a chance to speak with the owner. He told me he'd be opening a food truck/cart this coming Monday (i.e. today) someplace near a college campus. Seeing as I was visiting PDX from southern California, the street names he mentioned were unfamiliar to me and I forgot exactly where the new location would be. I had to wait a bit for my food to be ready, but man oh man was it worth the wait!! The meat (lots of it) was delicious, grilled to perfection. Tender, juicy, and spiced well. The pita was thin, healthier than your typical naan-style bread served with gyros. My dad got the chicken sandwich and he was quite happy with it! I saw another customer's falafel plate which also looked like a pretty good amount of food. I highly recommend this place, and the best part is that their meat is halal! The owner even showed me a ticket from his meat source (which was really nice of him-- I just hope he didn't think I doubted his word) which was a market called something Al-Noor, I think. read more

I tried the South Waterfront location/Truck underneath the OHSU tram. Got there at 11 at the right time before the lunch rush. Long wait, but huge Gyro. I ordered the Gyro combo with salad (since fryer was broken no fries for my kids) + soda. The Gyro was VERY filling so much so I didn't have dinner until 7pm...It was filled with tangy feta, kalamata olives and red onions. Delish. I made myself finish it since a soggy gyros would not sit well. Besides I had walked over the bridge by foot and didn't want to carry it. Salad was nice portion and full of tangy additions. The spinach pie was ordered and I nibbled a little while it was still warm. It was different. Not phyllo dough but more doughy and the lemon was more strong. Still a good lunch for $13. read more

Beirut cafe is newish to the Zidell Gantry food cart pod. This cart is on-par for Arabic food in Portland - one of the cuisines this town isn't really known for. It's fine for a quick sandwich. You're probably better off getting a falafel than the meat options. It is just like what you get at all of the multitude gyro places in town. And the pita is the same so-so pita you see all over town. The grape leaves have a nice flavor, but are pretty oily. For a quick bite it's absolutely a fine option. But it isn't in the same league as Wolf & Bear. read more
