She was blind and no longer walked. Some care givers were not very experienced, so my family decided to try another kind of care altogether. We were so lucky to find Shalom Gardens. There was a nice, peaceful room with private bathroom. It was not as fancy as the fancy assisted living, but none of that mattered. The new environment was more calm, had good vibes, mom got much better care, and her anxiety turned into relaxation and even bliss for periods of time. We were welcome to visit, the protocol was covid cautious, hospice workers told us how lucky mom was to be there, compared to other places they were going to. Long time caregivers, Arnold and Marci were a great team, and the two of them cared for mom up to and on the night she passed away. I only wish we had moved her to Shalom Gardens five years earlier! Rita, who runs Shalom Garden was business like, flexible, and helpful. She gave us a good referral for a hospice team that my family was happy with. Mom had a good death, at 96 years old. The other ladies at Shalom Gardens were also very peaceful and calm, whenever I saw them around. Lots of privacy for all there. I learned that if any elders have special needs, and require routine and calm surroundings, a good board and care can be much better than a fancy assisted living place. A place that was intimate, upscale, contemporary, felt like home, had good food, wonderful staff and was able to handle her medical issues. It was asking a lot, but Kalnel rose to the challenge. It was night and day better than any of the other places I looked at and when my friend moved in she was very happy there. The director (?), Stella, was honest about what they could and couldn't do, she never overpromised and always made me feel like she truly cared. She was extremely knowledgeable and was happy to share her recommendations and opinions. She went out of her way to make the intake process as smooth as possible. I can't say enough good things about Stella and Kalnel living. That is where I would want to go if I ever needed assisted living.

Our parent was bullied by another resident, and the management did not inform us and would not have, luckily we were told by other residents. The management dragged their feet and did very little to remedy the situation. Of course they did not want to ask the bullier to leave and lose that income. Very little attention paid to residents, very little response to family inquiries/complaints. The residence is badly in need of an overhaul. I hate to think what would happen in case of a fire or other emergency in case of evacuation. The so-called "afternoon tea" is leftover cake from the night before. In all the time my parent was there I met and talked to many residents and their families and no one said anything complimentary which makes me think the good reviews posted here are not genuine.

The facility is lovely, the residence were interacting with each other and enjoying various activities. My uncle's room is exactly as I hoped - a real bedroom & bathroom with a lil kitchenette. The administrators, health, care and support staff are truly impressive. The director, Judah is fantastic. He is very knowledgeable, compassionate and KNOWS every resident. This is a very difficult review to write but since you asked for this review, i will share. I…read moreplaced my husband in this very nicely located, decorative home because we could no longer keep him at home as he had end stage Parkinsons with episodes of Lewy Bodies dementia. There were many caregivers who I later found out had little training. What was most important to me was he be lovingly, gently cared for. They were very selective of their patients and came to our home twice to interview him. After a difficult, emotional decision, we took him to live there. What I did not know is she had rules. She wanted her way period!! Visitation eliminated his previous caregivers that had been with him 2 years. She felt it would inhibit his adjustment. He was depressed, unhappy but I tried to accommodate their philosophies. They had , at least 5-6 caregivers who did not speak much English which I did not realize. I knew there would be some adjustments and was trying to work with her. You could NOT come whenever you wanted. I think it might have been different had his caregivers eased him into the environment but she was adamant. He died after 5 weeks. I was shocked. I knew he was very compromised but he was still coherent and his body was failing. He was always clean, they were always welcoming ( on their schedule) and there was very limited telephone access as my husband could not manage his cell phone anymore. Access to him was frustrating. I asked to see his medication list and who gave him meds, when. That was never given to me. After the shock of his death, I realized the financial charges they had imposed on me was very padded. They actually charged me for their visits to my home to interview him. He passed early in May and they tried to keep the entire months rent. I had to get very tough with them and she actually accused me of caring more about money than his death. I believe in fairness. I believe they tried to take advantage of a vulnerable woman who was grieving and broken hearted. I will never know why he passed so quickly. Why did they make access so difficult. She was a gushy, talkative woman who advocated her home as superior and loving In retrospect I dont understand what happened. I guess I never will. When it came to finances, she turned into a deceptive, mean, insulting woman who has still not provided me with any type of documentation of any care given to him. The last time I spoke with her , she insulted me and passed judgment on me. I am a Nurse Practitioner who cares for breast cancer patients. The money was of no consequence to me until I realize they were violating the law. I do believe they cared for him but the lack of transparency is what keeps me uneasy. I loved that man so much. Their rules have made me doubt their veracity. I hope if anyone considers this place for their loved one, that you consider everything I have shared.
