This all started when I bought my 2.5-year-old daughter some fish from a big-name pet store. She was completely happy with the typical 5-gallon tank setup... I was not. I live right around the corner from the store it is a huge warehouse of fish and fish supplies both fresh and salt water. I've been going to the store for several decades . I've seen in other reviews people commenting about pricing. Everyone should keep in mind this is a brick and mortar store with a huge footprint with huge overhead so to compare their prices to Amazon really isn't fair and Craig will standby everything he sells. For me it's a local neighborhood, brick and mortar store that I am happy to support and give my hard earned dollars to. I guess people need to decide what's more important to them . I have always been treated very nicely there. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for help from the owner or manager. They have a large number of employees that just clean Tanks and may not be able to answer your questions, but certainly the owner and manager can. Once again , I have used Beitels for my fourth aquarium. Their dedication to service and detail are second to none . For over the past 10 years, I have had a tank which they serviced and maintained this tank was 50 gallons . I parked guy from inside came out said are you handicapped with a very rude tone and said unless you can't walk you can't park there was coming here for some coral and needed new koi's will never come back very rude there's no handicap signs in front/ let alone a pickup truck was blocking the front door how would a wheelchair get in since he's so worried? This is such a great fish store. They have literally EVERYTHING you need to build a beautiful fish tank. There are literally wall to wall tanks full of fish, and reptiles. The staff was really nice and helpful and answered all of our questions. If saltwater fish are your thing, this is the place for you. They have a huge assortment and saltwater fish scattered throughout a several tall walls of tanks. So many beautiful and interesting fish to check out. We were there looking at Coral rocks to add to our tank and they didnt disappoint! There were so many to choose from.. every shape and size you can imagine. We ended up buying several rocks and our tank is simply gorgeous. I didnt know you werent allowed to take pics of the fish. Im a newbie so I was unaware that it could stress out the fish. I took a couple pics before I noticed the sign. (oops!) I wasnt using a flash so Im pretty sure I didnt do any damage to any fish though. Very beautiful store with a variety of fish but that's about it. Staff was not readily available or accommodating. They were rude and made me wait even though I was the only costumer in the store. I couldn't tell how much anything actually was because there were no prices or names of the fish on the tanks. But there were some dead fish In the tanks if that makes you feel better. Not to mention over stalked. So I had to wait. Someone came to help me and sounded very bothered to help. I have just set up my very first aquarium, a 120 gallon freshwater tank. I stopped in Beital's for my first crop of hardy fish to get things started. I've heard the negative reviews over the years, and have also heard their selection is huge (it is!) and that they are knowledgeable. After all, you can't be in business this long and not understand your "product." Will helped me chose a group of long fin tiger barbs and rosy barbs. I will admit it was a bit disconcerting to have him call the owner repeated with questions, but certainly not a big deal. Since these fish were going in a new tank being cycled, I knew there was a risk of losing some of them. And of course, I have. The one I lost behaved strangely before dying and after speaking to Deb on the phone, I emailed a video. They have been extremely helpful in making sure I've got things set up properly, and have responded to all of my questions with lots of beginner-friendly information. Don't go if a warm & fuzzy experience is critical to you; but do go if you want a large selection and good support. read more

Holy fish I've never seen a place like this! Currently doing some research so that we can get a fish tank in my conference room at work. I've been contacting places that can do everything from setup to maintenance. I called ahead, spoke to Craig before arriving and did some research online. I found some negative reviews online but figured you don't stay in business for this long without doing something right. So I stopped in. First of all this place is massive! I've never seen a place like this. I walked around for a bit and was so impressed with all the color and variety. Even the freshwater fish were so diverse and colorful. They have everything here. Tanks, decor, fish, eels, even manta rays! I met with Craig who spent a lot of time with me showing me some different options and setups. We talked about size, aesthetic, maintenance options, and price. I was glad he spent so much time answering my questions. Now to the reason for losing a star: pricing. I recognize that I don't know a ton about this hobby but, as I mentioned, I have been meeting with other companies and doing my research. For what I am looking for, I was quoted a super rough estimate which was about 50% higher than other companies. Even when looking at the tanks I noticed the prices being a lot higher than other places I've been. If they were a bit more competitive, they would have my business hands down. But because the prices are a bit high we might not end up using them. I will definitely be back though! Went to get a catfish for my mbuna tank. Saw that a Syndontis Patricola was marked down $10.00 (still expensive at $55.00) but it was what I wanted to complete my community cichlid tank. Get the fish home, and, lo and behold, the poor thing had one severely deformed eye, the other side was a pit (no socket) totally missing an eye. This causes me to have to return the fish, and then they wanted to give me a store credit.. when I wanted a refund to my credit card. The owner Craig then got all ballistic with me, and saying how he monitors his tanks like a hawk, at which point I said "how did you miss a one-eyed, blind catfish" if you monitored the tanks so closely? While waiting for my credit, I saw three tanks with dead fish being consumed by other fishes, and several african cichlids with suken bellys. Craig- you need to practice (and train your staff) at better communication skills and not put back a severely damaged fish back in your stock. Thirty some-odd years of bad practices don't make you a pro.. and neither does a nasty mouth. PS- Ironically, got better quality fish from PetSmart and PetCo. People were also way nicer. read more

I would rate this aquarium a zero if I was allowed. Less than a month ago, I went to Beital's for the first time. It was the most convenient option to my house, as the aquarium I had previously used had closed. I went to buy a suckermouth catfish (pleco) for my 30-gallon fresh-water tank that held my 4-year old blood parrot cichlid -- Larry. I was going to be traveling, and wanted to do a little renovation in his tank so that he could keep himself happy and busy while I was gone. Larry was a resilient fish -- over the years, he had survived road trips with me from Washington DC, to New York twice when my work wasn't stable and I had to move twice. This fish had withstood a lot, and he had comfortably been growing into his large size. I took very good care of Larry's tank, and understood its processes. I had to take good care of it for him to live as long as he did. On the day that I went to Beital's Aquarium, I decided that with such a large tank and only one fish (Larry), that I would instead get two suckermouth catfish for his tank. These types of fish are usually so inexpensive (at my previous aquarium, these fish had cost me $15 each), and I wanted to do something nice for the tank and they would help to keep it clean. I also purchased some extra gravel (priced at about $8 for a small bag) which was washed for me at the aquarium by one of the helpers. A strange thing that I noticed was that all of this guy's workers were either Asian or African, and didn't speak English very well, and the way he spoke to them and ordered them around lead me to wonder about their working conditions. It was just a strange feeling, but I took note. They however were very helpful and professional, but he seemed rather aggressive with them. The last thing I purchased was a piece of wood for the tank. At first, I had seen some dried, treated pieces on the shelves. But the owner aggressively told me it would be better if I take one of the pieces of wood straight from the tanks themselves -- that way I wouldn't have to wash it or worry about it turning my water brown. All I had to do was put it straight into my tank when I got home. He said he wouldn't charge me extra for this -- at around $15. I spent a good hour in the aquarium with one of the employees working hard to take care of all these things for me. From collecting the specific fish I wanted to washing the new gravel, and then retrieving the piece of wood from one of the tanks as instructed by the owner -- and then carefully wrapping it in plastic at the owners instructions so that the moisture wouldn't leak through. So, I expected to pay around $50-$60 dollars -- that seemed very reasonable. However, the owner charged me $110. I know I should have walked right out of there, but I had already spent so much time and I was traveling in only the next couple of days -- in that moment I felt like I had no choice but to pay. And I was so angry with myself afterwards for letting him take advantage of me like that. He even tried to get more money out of the sale by telling me I needed some kind of special food for the suckers -- and he said so in a very condescending and nasty tone, as though I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I couldn't possibly, right? As a woman. In any case, I was happy to get home and give my fish Larry a couple of new friends and a new piece of tank wood to play in and hide behind. And within a week, my 4-year old blood parrot cichlid was dead. My family who had been taking care of him while I was gone called me with the news. And it broke my heart, because I know how strong that fish was. I know how much he'd been through with me, and survived. And I blamed myself and felt like I had killed him. My sister found and arranged for a real estate agent who is a lover of fish tanks and aquariums to come and take my tank and the remaining sucker fish -- I told her I couldn't handle seeing that tank without Larry in it, just get rid of it. The man was very kind, and we gave him the tank and everything in it for free. He told us that he as about 6 other fish tanks in his home, and he's an avid enthusiast. He told us it didn't make sense that Larry suddenly died. So he tested the water and the tank. And what he found was a bacteria growing on the wood that had been sold to me. He told my family without a doubt in his mind, that was what killed Larry. After the owner who treated me like I knew nothing, and charged me easily twice as much as he should have, and who was incredibly nasty and aggressive, said just put the wood straight into the tank. And that was it -- it killed my fish. I don't even care about the money. I feel sick that an innocent creature was killed, and all this man cared about was the money. Shame on you. read more

6 months later and the beautuful aquatic RES habitat is still a favorite place to view. Turtles have crystal clear water and everything working flawlessly. Although Craig designed a ultra quiet system I added a water fall, wave maker and additional basking and night lights to enhance viewing and the background sounds let us enter the area without all 4 turtles stopping to beg for food. We get to observe their natural behaviours now including mating dances. Apparently we have one male and 3 females. I saw my review and wanted an update 6 months later. The cabinet is beautiful and guests are always delighted to see this grand display. The crystal clarity is now better than ever and remarkable. I added nitrification and other beneficial bacteria and have a full water chemistry testing kit and test stripes. The turtles have grown and are very active. Good to know if I have a a problem I can't solve Craig Beitels is there to back me up. Quality and reliability are the most important thing to me. I got lucky and made the best choice finding Beitels. read more

Every time I've been in there NO ONE offers to help and when we finally have to ask someone after 10 mins of wandering around they make up prices and will sell you anything even if it's not safe for your tank just to make money. Today our FOURTH fish died that we purchased from Beitals. We have have a great tank that has been running with plenty of other healthy fish (that we didn't purchase here) that have been in there for almost a year. However, they need to work on their customer service they have a big store I keep asking employees for information on the fish such as pricing and no one knew they always had to get the manager. In dealing with the owner Craig, I thought was a dream and what a nightmare it became, he talks a good game but has no knowledge of tank maintenance nor does the staff. It is just a money making venture for them. Whatever needs you have check the WEB you will find it at least 50% less. The cleaning of my tank from the staff was terrible with supposed years of experience they do not even know how to test the water conditions correctly.
