I read a sign in the lobby that expressed the businesses desire to help save the monarch butterflies - they plant milkweed on their property and encourage others to plant it as well. What a lovely way to remember a loved one! I asked for some seeds, and the staff happily gave me their last vial. Now I will have a beautiful, wild pollinator garden in memory of my cousin. I stopped in the office and they said they would get it done by memorial day and still nothing. It is now August. It was something we paid for upfront and still we must wait. Also, when my mother was alive, we put some items on my father's grave shortly before Christmas and when we went back the items were gone. My mother felt that we couldn't have anything on my father's grave. One of the items was a potted mini Christmas tree. It wasn't like they needed to mow the lawn in December. I just told her we would just have to set up a memorial in our own back yard. They take the items off the graves and pile them in a huge clump in back of the Mausoleum. They also left off the temporary wooden cover and I assume they planned to come back with more soil. There was about a 6" hole that was letting the rain get into the grave. I put the wooden cover back on to prevent more water getting in. I talked to the guy in the office and he said he would talk to the people who takes care of that. He said it was normal for water to get in. I felt that was insensitive since we just buried my mother. That is all I need is the image of her floating around in her casket. They are not very good with the details.

Before the service even began, the grave was still being dug. My grandmother was then told the ground was unsafe and that our family could not gather at the graveside, even though she had paid for a graveside service. We were told we would have to stand on a distant concrete roadway instead. Most of our family chose to leave after the chapel service rather than watch Robert be buried from so far away. Only a few family members remained. What made this especially confusing was watching the funeral staff carry my grandfather's casket to the burial vault while a CASE backhoe continued working at the gravesite. If there was a legitimate safety concern, it was never clearly explained to our family, leaving us with more questions than closure. Aaron was kind and spoke well during the service, but he had promised to gather information beforehand to prepare a personal tribute. Instead, he asked my grieving grandmother about her husband's life only 30 minutes before the service. During the service he accidentally referred to my grandfather as "Richard" once. We were also asked to provide photos for a memorial slideshow, but no one from the funeral home started it. It was apparently expected that a family member would find the remote and know how to operate the equipment during our own loved one's funeral. Only a handful of the photos were ultimately shown. On top of that, the casket my grandmother selected wasn't the one used, and there was confusion afterward over whether the death certificates were even ready. Families don't expect perfection. They expect preparation, communication, and guidance through one of the hardest days of their lives. A funeral only happens once. There are no second chances to give a loved one the farewell they deserve. I sincerely hope Restlawn Memorial Gardens reviews what happened that day and makes meaningful changes so another family doesn't leave carrying the same disappointment ours does.
