After an exhausting search for a service due the passing of a loved one, my family and I found Johnson Funeral Home to be one of the best we encountered. The glowing reviews on Yelp were not wrong and they were by far the most personable and professional service that left us very impressed. For starters, Miles was very quick to get back to us, despite a time crunch and the lack of flexibility on our end. He made last minute arrangements with his schedule and was able to meet us to give us a tour of the space and answer all of our questions. He was extremely courteous and mindful that we were emotional from our loss and was able to present a number of options for how we'd present the service. His space is extremely customizable to most people's needs. While they can't fit a large number of folks (like at a church), he was able to accommodate a decent number of folks and had additional space in the back. What was really impressive is that he was all-up-to-date with his tech and maintenance of the place. It was clean and inviting, the ventilation was good and their setup with the speaker system, mics, and projector options were top notch. I would also say that he was certainly more affordable than a lot of the other options in town. While many are run by corporations / parent companies, this entire operation is just him and his wife. They have a beautiful family and I was impressed that he was still able to make time to meet with mine. Above all, he was incredibly understanding our situation and was able to talk it through with us with grace and dignity. When my 93 year old mother died in May of this year, Johnson funeral home quickly came to our home in Dallas, OR. Miles was nothing but kind in making the arrangements and didn't try to talk me into extra things which would have increased the price. I would recommend them for their patience and understanding at a very difficult time. They even brought the cremains to my home as I was having difficulty driving through hip pain from a break that happened a few months before and I didn't think I could make the trip back to Salem. In September of 2022, Miles and his team assisted me and my family with a viewing and a cremation services arrangement for a dear departed family member. Miles was available for an in-person conversation regarding all that my family would need to have as ready as possible documentation wise, and explained the technical aspects such as signing the agreement - and when that would take place, as well as viewing-related details most professionally and yet with understanding that let us know he was genuinely supportive of what we were going through. As we worked with hospice care around the time of the passing of my family member, we had some questions on how all that would work out and who would communicate what to whom and when and Johnson Funeral Home was seamless for our amazing hospice worker to connect with, and we also stayed in touch with Miles' team regarding the process on the day of the passing. There were several culturally specific details my family absolutely needed to include and Johnson Funeral Home really listened to understand, not to check some boxes, but to create a meaningful farewell that was in accordance with the faith of the deceased. I was beyond, simply beyond, moved and impressed with the work of their florist; as we were figuring out the viewing details, I flipped through the floral arrangements book and pointed out a couple of good options and suggested a flower to be included in whatever the arrangement ended up being, and the final arrangement (vertical, cascade style) was absolutely stunning. If you approach this process with some notions on what you'd like ahead of time and are very clear with the team when working on the arrangements, allow them to be a great guiding and supportive force. When my mother-in-law passed, I was in a different state and wasn't there to help my husband. He was frustrated with the funeral home we'd arranged to manage things. Johnson Funeral Home transported my mother-in-law's body to their funeral home from another funeral home that was unwilling to work with my mother-in-law's last wishes and with her funeral insurance policy. Miles was understanding, caring, and professional from the get-go! He made sure my mother-in-law's last wishes were recognized and refunded the remaining insurance money to the family, as was stated in the insurance policy. Miles took care of all the paperwork for the insurance policy to cover the double transport (Johnson's costs were much lower than the other company's) and other expenses, and he made sure the remaining funeral insurance money was promptly refunded to the family. First let me say this: It is a must that when you need a funeral home, and you have time, you visit at least 3 and interview each place getting pricing and process. It is also a good thing to do this ahead of time. My daughter and I did exactly that, 3 weeks before the passing of my wife from her 30 month battle with cancer. We visited Johnson Funeral Home, Salem OR, first and immediately we both had a very good impression and that impression kept growing as we visited the next two. Second place, I felt like I needed to be wearing a 3-piece suit and live in the high dollar area of the city. Third place was immediately a put-off with Urns and Caskets as you walked in the door and then a feeling of lots of pestering to buy stuff even afterwards. Johnson presented none of this and you just felt like family with Miles. He took very good care of my wife and also contacted the SSA and procured necessary death certificates. I previously met Miles through his time as a volunteer youth coach then one horrible day this October my 61 year old mother unexpectedly died. I really could not grasp what was going on and which way was even up. I knew Miles and his wife had a funeral home but not much else; as a coach Miles showed kindness and patience. Miles was kind and compassionate and responsive when we would call when my mother passed. He was even able to get us a casket when the supplier we originally went through failed to deliver. However, when it came to explaining what to expect or asking about pallbearers or other things, he didn't do that. My mother had requested specific people be pallbearers and when she was delivered to the cemetery for her graveside service, he didn't wait for the pallbearers to be ready, He just started pulling her out of the hearse, and anyone nearby had to grab the casket to help. Not everyone was allowed the opportunity to be one. He could have asked if everyone was ready. We felt rushed. When we spoke to him about using his reception hall for the celebration of life he didn't ask about videos we had made or offer anyone to help us plan it or run it like their website advertises. I was grieving and had to run it myself and it was a lot. I also felt like I needed to be in charge of everything that I thought a funeral director usually helps with. I'm unsure if this was because we had the service graveside and not at the funeral home. Regardless, the saddest day of our lives should have been better handled. We had never made arrangements for a funeral before so it would have been lovely for either the funeral director or someone else to help us know what to expect and plan the day better. All in all, I can only give 3 stars since Miles and his staff were kind and courteous. read more
