Upon approach to this place, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that the restaurant was located in an industrial area AND we were the only English-speaking customers visiting that day (& the restaurant was packed!). Geez, Can I just say best pupusas in town? Good portion size and definitely filling. Owners really nice and informative. Their rice dish with chicken is so good and tender with a pack of flavors. Definitely worth the trip heading down there. The menu can be slightly overwhelming for most who isn't hispanic. Salvadoran food? Pupuseria? A place that serves pupusas? Yes, it is. Familiar with Mexican traditional foods, I saw tacos and pupusas on the menu. ON my last visits, I ordered the Pupusa Revuelta, Menudo and tasty tacos. Free corn chips with salsa verde and hot bean dip to start. Pupusas were warm, thick, soft and pillowy. Think of it like a Mexican pizza pocket, only with hot, gooey and chewy fillings. The filling is chicharrón, but not the fried pork rind type*. It comes with curtido - a fermented cabbage slaw of sorts mixed with carrot and a warm, mild tomato sauce (salsa roja). Don't expect this to be spicy; ask for their special hot salsa if you want it to burn like I do. Menudo cooked right. The tripe had a "buttery" aftertaste that I look for when eating menudo and a ton of places really do not seem to get it right. Just wish they were more generous on the onion and cilantro that comes out with the bowl. Tacos: small sized, double corn tortillas, with choice of meat. I tried the lengua (tongue), fried tripas (small intestines), and the carne asada (beef). Cheap for about $1.20 or so each and delicious. The owner just redesigned the menus for easier reading and did a wonderful job. Belen has become my favorite stop for an easy, no brainer lunch and/or dinner destination when tacos come to mind. Update: Ate the soups (caldos). The beef soup and the chicken soup are fab-u-lous! When ordering the chicken, ask for it separately! I'm not exactly well-versed when it comes to authentic Salvadoran cuisine, but I was absolutely blown away with the pupusas! For those of you that aren't familiar with Salvadoran food, a pupusa is a traditional dish made with a thick, homemade corn tortilla then stuffed with a variety of fillings. I ordered two pupusa revueltas, which were filled with with tender pork, ooey-gooey cheese and refried beans. The tortilla was hot, soft and pillowy. It's also served with a side of curtido, which is similar to that of a pickled coleslaw. A bite of pupusa, topped with a helping of curtido and a drizzle of salsa roja = heaven in a bite! My bf and I also shared an order of yuca frita and chicharrón. The yuca (similar to the consistency of a potato) was fried and served like a french fry. The chicharrón (salty, fried pork belly) was different, but nothing less than delicious. Ever since my visit, I've been fantasizing over Belen's pupusas. Let me begin with some disclaimers. I have no idea what Salavadoran food to supposed to taste like. I'm not even really a fan of Mexican food so I honestly have no idea why I went to a place of similar cuisine. With that said, I actually really enjoyed everything about this place. My friend and I got a pupusa each and decided to split the molcajete. I usually frequent Guanaco's Tacos in University District (again, no idea why because I don't even really like Mexican food) so I'm no stranger to pupusas. But here? Oh my oh my. It was like a little tortilla pocket of heaven filled with delicious meat and warm, gooey cheese. They just don't taste like that at Guanaco's. They just- no. And don't get me started on the molcajete. Best food decision. Ever. Molcajete is basically a Mexican mortar. So you have a warm stone mortar filled with grilled shrimp, a strip of grilled steak, and grilled cactus. All that comes with tortilla, dipping sauce, and slaw. Everything was on point. I don't even know how else to describe it. The texture. The seasoning. It was everything grilled food should be. With pricing, portions, decor, and customer service, you honestly can't lose here.
