This one caught our eye because it was a smaller vessel with only 4-6 passengers and it was made out of fiberglass. The salesperson was very nice and sold us on this boat. The captain was nice, but probably not the best tour guide although the gave us interesting tidbits of information particularly regarding the lobster industry. It was a beautiful day for sailing and I really enjoyed. I did like that there were only six passengers and one crew plus the captain. Definitely would recommend this schooner!

The volunteers that work on the train are pleasant and knowledgable, they checked in throughout the ride and were happy to strike up conversation. Definitely a good use of an afternoon to ride the train around a very rural part of the state; the rail line goes right through a large swamp and lake where there's all sorts of wildlife: deer, herons, beavers, and apparently bears and moose aren't unheard of if it's the right time of the day.

Ducktrap Kayak has a really sparse website, but don't let that fool you--they know what they're doing. Rental prices are very reasonable, and they will either help you strap the kayaks to your car or pick you up and drop you off at your convenience. The guy we spoke with was super knowledgable and suggested we kayak around Lake Megunticook (rather than in the ocean), which ended up being a fabulous choice. Even in early June, the water was warm enough to swim in, and there are several 'islands' where you can dock your kayak and stop for a bite to eat or a swim. We started early, so it felt like we had the lake to ourselves! Before he pushed us off, the owner gave us a rundown of how to work the kayaks and some tips for having a great trip. Be sure to check this place out! Definitely makes for a great morning/day of fun!

Dogs are allowed on the beach and I'm like yeah I know our dog jumped out of the canoe and we're heading back and we have to go through the beach to get the canoe back on land.., water stunk and the kids were screaming CACA Mama the water smells like caca Not sure if it's that time of the year where the heat hits in the humidity to where it increases water smell? This was our 6th year of staying at Megunticook and we've loved every visit. Frankly didn't even…read morenotice the change of ownership and this year some of the staff who were here when we first came in 2021 are now back. The site is clean, well-maintained and above all quiet and peaceful. The pool is just right - as are the outdoor showers and bath house. We're booked for next year and will share more photos. We have a Roadtrek Van and also set up a screen house (we call it our living room). Previously we had fires at night but it was kinda warm so we didn't indulge. Another favorite thing to do is to take our morning coffee (or our eventing cocktail) and sit on the chairs overlooking the ocean. If peaceful wooded experiences are for you, this is a great deal. Bonus in that it is close to Rockland and even Camden for even more fun.

However it's been sold out to a corporation and as it's typical they are only after the $$$. You can not pre book for the following year, and the have a season camp manager, who although very nice has no answers to anything other than call the 1-800 number. We met many ppl over the week we were here and most of them repeat travelers who agree this may be their last year due mainly to the attitude and corporate hospitality, aka none. It's a shame, this was a nice family feel and accommodating camp ground. Our family have been coming here for three generations. The campground itself is pretty much unchangeable, the amenities could be upgraded and spruced up, but we come for the feel of the grounds. The cold corporate feel it's already having is making us think twice sadly.

My husband and I were looking for a fun way to "leaf peep," since the Common Ground Fair was…read morecancelled this year due to the coronavirus precautions. I saw an article about RailCycling, and we thought we'd give it a try. We were not disappointed! So what are RailCycles? Think of a tandem recumbent bike, that runs on train tracks. We started at a historic train station in Unity (unfortunately, we were there too early to partake of the ice cream shop that was housed in one of the buildings, but we did browse a soap shop). Check out the tiny museum, which doubles as a rudimentary gift shop. We then sat down on our Cycle. They are somewhat adjustable for height, but not completely. I'm short (5' tall), and the closest I could get to the pedals had me reaching, because of the placement of the brake cable. When I tried one of the others, the closer setting was too close (maybe sized for a child). My seat also seeped water (though it hadn't rained for days), and I ended up with a very wet butt. The seats also aren't very wide, so take that into account. Once we got started, it was a lot of fun - one major roadway across which Logan stopped traffic so we could cross, followed by a stretch of track that traversed the woods with their beautiful fall colors, then hugged past Unity Pond, through a swampy area (where we were treated to three lovely herons flying past), and across a railroad bridge before stopping to turn around and head back. All the while we pedaled steadily, getting exercise as well as a fun ride through the woods. When we did reach that halfway point, I was disappointed - it all goes by so quickly! The entire trip takes an hour or so. It's not a difficult pedal, though there are some slight grades (remember, these are train tracks, and trains don't do well going up and down hills). I think that if the group (there were five couples, including us) were having trouble keeping up, our guide would have slowed down to accommodate us. But if you're looking for a strenuous workout, you won't find it here. We enjoyed the ride, spent some time together laughing, talking and taking in the scenery - great activity for a beautiful autumn day in Maine. Longer would have been better for us, but Logan did say that a longer ride is planned for October!
