Well I finally had the chance to try Beligan Frites as they are everywhere in Belgium and a local had recommended this particular chain. How could you go wrong with cooking fries? Well sadly this particular location served us luke warm fries and when asked if we could get a replacement, the server was not too fond of it and preferred to ignore us. Did they taste good, well I believe so, but hard to judge semi cold fries. The spot was pretty cool though, a two story building with a pretty large menu and great prices, especially so close to downtown Brussels. I'm sure some people prefer Frite Flagey, but the dirty conditions of that place might be what adds to the flavour there. What adds to the flavour here is that they are fresh out of the frier. Maybe this was because we ordered our fries at 11:30 pm, but the fries were the worst I had in so long. Inside dry and outside oily, it was clear it was sitting there for the whole day, it was stale. Things have gotten so touristy in this corner that Belgian Frit-N-Toast has been simplified to simply "Belgian Frites." Truth is, for the various blocks around the corner there are plenty of other virtual copycat places that are also "Belgian Frites" but as long as one can appreciate fried seasoned potatoes with sauces on the go, it almost doesn't matter. (#1) The term "french fries" is a strike to the pride of Belgium (and really, the Netherlands) for which they feel to be the rightful inventors to modern day fries (or frites) that have been mistakenly coined French by us idiot Americans from WWI. Regardless of who claims what, frites are the national snack in these parts, and they are really done incredibly well. The potatoes are cut long and extra crispy with plenty of seasoning beforehand. Bits of parsley and a generous dousing of salt is thrown into the mix before serving. Condiments of all kinds (my favorite being curry mayo) are available as well. For those dining in, combine it with a sausage or sandwich of some kind. My first experience with Belgian frites. Not bad. Even though these two stores anchoring a busy corner was clobbered with people. Ordering is easy since you simply walk up to the counter facing the street and be prepared to elect from the sauces. I chose Andalouse because I thought it sounded like Andouille. I like spicy. The french fries were good but lacked salt. However, I don't care since I was in Brussels! Inexpensive and a good way to sample the fare that makes Brussels quite popular. The frites stands in Belgium do not only specialize in french fries. They are the equivalent to our fast food joints so also serve burgers, hot dogs, skewers, and meatballs. I did not order a burger but watched one leave the counter while waiting for my french fries. A very touristy location but great fast food. The fries here were delicious and crispy, an some of the better ones I have had. The curry ketchup is a must. As with most of the fries in the area, they come in a paper cone with a tiny fork for convenience. One of the waiter was a bit rude when I asked if we could sit down since I didn't know how it worked. When we were seated, another waiter was great at taking our order. Belgian Frites was the most named place for the best fries while I was here. I must say, while they had more sauce options than the other fry shops, the fries tasted fairly similar. With Belgian frites being a fan favourite of tourists visiting, one would think that a place that owns the belgianfrites.be domain name would be better. It may look like a chip shop, but it's really just a glorified kebab place. However, the frites themselves are definitely spot on, double fried to perfect crispy outside and potato-ey inside with choice of standard sauces. The "special", we discovered, does not come in the standard chip cone, but in a plastic container, covered in onions that had been sitting around a while, then part covered in ketchup and part in mayonnaise.
