To me a Swedish massage consists of long gentle strokes with a firmness that you ask for, and I received none of that. The person who performed a 'massage' me had her hands hurry along my back in a flurry of movements - back and forth in a haphazard way without any order. So I did a ChatGPT when I got home on what a proper Swedish massage is and this is what it said: 'Effleurage - long, smooth, gliding strokes to warm up muscles and relax the body Petrissage - kneading and rolling motions to release tension and improve circulation Friction - deeper, circular movements to break up knots and adhesions Tapotement - rhythmic tapping or percussion (such as cupping or chopping) to stimulate muscles Vibration - gentle shaking or trembling to loosen muscles and calm the nervous system Swedish massage is often used for stress relief, relaxation, improved flexibility, and general wellness, making it one of the most popular massage styles, especially for first-time massage clients. I came to her with a complicated history of back injuries, sciatica, scoliosis, and significant tension and pain throughout my neck, shoulders, lower back, and hips. She listened carefully to that history and actually incorporated it into the way she approached my massage rather than simply giving me a standard, one-size-fits-all treatment. What impressed me most was her precision and attention to detail. She worked incredibly thoroughly, repositioning my arms, legs, and neck throughout the session so she could address muscles and areas of tension from multiple angles. It genuinely felt like she was evaluating and working with my body as a whole rather than simply moving through a routine. There was a purpose behind everything she did. Her decades of experience are immediately apparent. Carmen knows the human body, knows how to find areas that need attention, and isn't afraid to put in the work required to address them properly. I felt completely comfortable in her care and trusted her judgment throughout the entire session. Carmen also runs European Therapeutics entirely on her own, and there is something incredibly special about receiving care from someone who has spent decades building her business and still approaches her work with this level of dedication. I was checked in courteously and took advantage of my early arrival (recommend) to check out the amenities. The spa smells great and the setting feels very approachable and welcoming. My massage therapist was Audrey. She was wonderful. She spent a few minutes at the start of the treatment to find out if I had any special areas of concern and then invited me to choose my aromatherapy oil. I chose the one with sweet orange. Audrey made the aches in my knees go away!!! Thank you, Audrey! Afterwards, I spent some time in the jacuzzi and then the steam room. I felt so relaxed and refreshed after the whole experience. I love the relaxation room at the Seagate: it has a very calming vibe. I was offered either a peppermint tea or some prosecco when I arrived. I chose the tea. In the past, I have chosen the prosecco. However, ever since The Seagate stopped serving the prosecco in a real champagne glass, I have switched to the tea. Prosecco does NOT taste as good served in a plastic cup! When asked about this change, I was told that their champagne glasses kept disappearing.... . Really people?? The Seagate is one of my favorite spas!
