We arrived at 6:00pm and drove right up into the dirt parking lot. Many other cars parked outside of the gate, along the curb on each side of Victory Blvd. The parking lot sign showed open from dawn to dusk, so we had at least an hour to explore before the 7:20pm sunset and potential tow. The weather was absolutely gorgeous for an evening hike!! Blue sky, cool breeze, rolling hills of green, and the sun setting made for the perfect golden hour!! After hiking down the Victory Trailhead and then up around the Ahmanson Ranch House Trail, we found the California Poppies! We also ran into a group of photographers so we didn't get a chance to explore as imagined before we arrived. However, we still enjoyed the sweeping views of an uninterrupted canyon. It was perfect! We saw many hiking with their dogs, a few benches, and various flowers. Be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes as the trails can be uneven and rocky. I would love to return but have a feeling the summer heat will arrive sooner than later. Then the green will dry out and turn into fuel. I hope that lawmakers and fire prevention experts find ways to reduce the impact of wildfires in the state of California. This area is truly a magnificent escape from the LA city hustle and bustle.

The trails open at 7:00 a.m. and the community pays for a security to make sure the area is safe. Parking: 5/5 You can street park and walk up or you can park inside and pay $3. Plenty and plenty of parking. Trails/Views: 5/5 You can take the many trails here and the views are beautiful you will see deer, bunnies and coyotes. There is a couple of little streams to cross. The trails are rolling so it can be flat, elevation and some downhills. You will love this place it looks like Ireland. This place will make you feel energized and relaxed at the same time. You can do any distance as strava has some of the maps for trails.

I ride my bike back there all the time I live right down the street from it at 5532 La Virginia Rd.. bring water with you and yes in the future you're gonna wanna keep your eyes open because now they've made it accessible for mountain lions. Otherwise it's a great hike always bring sunscreen and water with you and make sure your batteries good on your phone. You're all good to go.

The most exciting thing was the hairy black tarantula that crossed the path. Many dirt roads run through this nature area that mostly stretch north-south with smaller east-west connector trails. Also with multiple trailheads, I chose an 8.6-mile loop with a 1000' elevation change that started at the north end of Las Virgenes Road off the 118 in Calabasas. 0.0 miles: Park on the street and walk north past the aptly named Sulphur Spring (don't know how the nearby apartments handle the smell). Follow this dirt road and stay left. 0.8 miles: Left to go up the Las Virgenes Connector which is not a road but a wide trail. 1.3 miles: Right to Cheeseboro Ridge Trail under electrical lines because this dirt road services a series of power towers. The trail has views of the rocky Baleen Wall on the left. 3.5 miles: Reach highest point with outcropping of boulders with decent view. 4.5 miles: Right at marked sign to go down Sheep Corral Trail - a single track trail not a road. 6.3 miles: Right to the mostly flat Bell Canyon Fire Road at the valley floor with occasional tree shade and many signs warning of the underground high pressure natural gas line. We were among the very few hikers but encountered plenty of mountain bikers. I didn't see anyone with dogs but there was plenty of poop on the trail.

From there and back it's about a 4.5 mile hike (also $5 for parking at Red Rock). From the red the trails aren't marked so I'd recommend checking the All Trails app before hand to get an idea of how the trail goes. Overall it's a moderate hike, a good gradual incline but nothing brutal. Nice rock formations along the hike with nice views of the San Fernando valley, Topanga/ Santa Monica mountains, and a glimpse of the ocean. During the late spring and summers months make sure to bring plenty of water, sun screen, and a hat since there isn't much shade on the trail.

I've been looking at Oat Mountain (highest peak in the Santa Susanna range) for years now, but I've always avoided it because it's pavement from bottom to top (it was a Nike Missile Site), but it was a much better hike than I expected!! Deceivingly steep, but with some amazing views of the surrounding landscape. The summit is an active radar station, which IS off limits, unless you can't read signs (and don't get caught)! The Nike Missile Site was interesting to explore, but nothing extraordinary. It wasn't as isolated a hike as I'd read, but it was far from busy. I did have 4 pick-ups drive up the road to tend to the cows and a Police helicopter circled, landed and took off before I hit the forbidden zone.

At the top there are challenging but paved or well defined paths with slopes. The coolest thing happened on our hike! We were having an Animal Planet evening. This included running into a goat soaking in the sunset atop his mountain. It was very cool. He let us get within 40 ft of him and let our dogs say hello from about 10 ft away. We also saw an owl perched high atop a single branch waiting to swoop in on his dinner.

I told myself I will take the bus and come to see Mother Nature. While I was on my fast in January I booked marked these stair here so god spoke to me today and so I went. I needed to see the green, get fresh air and just get back into my own zone because of the funk I've been in. Being here help me think of good times I've been to stairs, or on a trails I've been on. People I've gone on hikes with or even loved ones for their first time. The views got me out of my own mind and really gave me clarity of where I should be and where I'm heading. God reveals all and have me see things which I appreciate the good and the bad. And it really shows me I need to be where I need to be. I am willing to take more adventures soon with the bus and just humbling myself as a post I posted on social media about me remaining with an open heart to see what life has to offer now. Do you ever not realize you haven't heard a certain noise in years until you finally hear it again…read moreand it's like music in your ears? This is how I felt yesterday evening as I stepped foot into Limekiln Canyon trail! What was that noise? Frogs!!!! I did not realize that I haven't heard the sound of frogs croaking in years and suddenly it was the most beautiful noise so peaceful and serene I wanted to spend the night on a log just listening!!! I attended a meet up hike and I had no idea this trail existed! As a side note it was funny I didn't know this is the same hiking group my step dad attends so it was a fun surprise when we saw eachother and we hiked it together! I've lived around the area and explored all my life but this is the first time I heard of this trail or seen it!!! Parking is street parking off Tampa and across from the church. The entire path is dirt roads and very very well maintained brush on all sides. My step dad said he's had a run in with rattlesnakes on this trail and to be very careful on the parts of the trail that get narrow with bushes on both sides so close to where you're walking. All the trees are huge and give great shade and cover. We hiked at around 6pm and I did see people with dogs who were all on leashes which was good and the trail wasn't too congested so I do believe next time I come to this trail I can bring my dog along! When it gets dark the trees don't let in too much light from the sky so make sure you bring your flashlight. I'm really excited to have such a nice place to hike so close and, well, as I said the sound of the frogs has me hooked and you might catch me there just sitting on a log listening to the beautiful nature sounds!

Once you reach the top, you're rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view of the Valley. It's also quite interesting as you hike along; you get a bird's-eye view into various backyards with some truly beautiful pools & hot tubs. The day I went was overcast, which made for a very pleasant & chill walk. There is plenty of nature to enjoy, including lots of birds flying around. Also lots of street parking outside the entrance to the trail. One thing that caught my attention: lots of litter & beer cans everywhere:( very sad .

I've recently started coming to Shadow Ranch Park with my baby and it's quickly become one of our…read morego-to spots. The park has consistently been clean and well maintained, which I really appreciate as a parent. I also feel comfortable here. I haven't encountered any issues, and it feels safe and family friendly. I love that there are two separate play areas for different age groups, so both smaller and bigger kids have space to play comfortably. The only small improvements I'd suggest would be giving the grass a slight trim and possibly bringing back the tire swing or replacing it with another feature. Lots of open space and fields. Great for all sorts of parties. Overall, I'm very satisfied and happy to have found such a nice local park for our outings.
