She now plays BETTER than in 1995, and I'm happy to report has taken its place as my main axe again! As far as I'm concerned, this is the only place that I will trust with my dearest guitars. Patty Silvester is awesome. She has been impressively responsive throughout our shopping experiences. Sent a customer to pick out pavers... he walked out with an almost brand new outdoor kitchen!!! (Although, his wife's eyes looked like they could shoot lasers ha!) that is... until he told her he got EVERYTHING, the grill, mini fridge, cabinetry etc all for $4k!!! (When retail, was about $11k!!) The pavers were great too. And BYL even delivered them down the narrow south end alleyway between abutting brownstones which was rediculously stressful. I thought my jaw was going to fall off. We couldn't even get pick up trucks down there! They brought a forklift on the back of the delivery truck, zipped right down and dropped the pallet EXACTLY where we needed it!!!! Needless to say, very pleased with our experience. Now, had the 2 previous reviewers had more patience, maybe they wouldn't have spent $20-30k on materials but half that AND SCORED SOME! Oh well, their loss - Our gain! We have since gone on to work with BYL for 4 projects. We have gotten to know the team very well. They are responsive to email, pay attention to detail to make sure that nothing is overlooked and when it comes to renovations-- man, even the smallest detail overlooked can have consequences of EPIC proportions. I've met so many friends here, it's more than just an open mic and a music store, it's a community and a family. I've played drums, bass, and guitar here with so many different local musicians in so many genres, it has helped me to grow and develop my skills for each instrument. It has, without exaggeration, changed my life. If open mics aren't your thing and you just want a place to buy an instrument, it's great for that too. Unlike bigger chains like Guitar Center where they just want your money and kick you out, you can have a long conversation with the people working here to make sure you're purchasing the instrument right for you. If you want lessons or you have a kid you'd like to get into music, this is the place for that, too. Often you'll see the Rick's Music World students play at the open mics and I used to think "A student? Eh, this won't be too good" and they always blow me away. Not much in the way of exotic hardwoods, but they had suge a huge selection of mahogany that I spent almost an hour deciding what I was going to take home. Jim, a salesman/lumberman/singer/veteran, was extremely helpful- not only getting the mahogany I settled on, but cutting it, and answering some other questions about the properties of some of the woods they stock. I also learned that they can get any of the exotics I usually get.
