The cheese is an entire experience. It is creamy and just acidic enough. I was worried my family of 4 wouldn't be able to work through the wheel, but it turns out to be the most amazing grilled cheese-making cheese you could ever imagine and had my kids begging for more! We made a special trip to Crozet while in D.C. for this cheese (and maybe some wine!). Please visit if you are in the area!

The 2 lb. cheese wheel comes in a red wax coated protective seal that keeps this semi-soft cheese delicious and mild. We purchased two wheels of cheese at $32 each. They also ship for a slightly higher charge. But it's definitely worth taking a trip to see the monastery grounds and visit the sweet nuns. The cheese shop is open daily (except Sunday) between 2-4 pm, but hours may vary so check their website for times. The cheese here is made from grass-fed cow's milk which gives this cheese its incredible velvety texture. The cheese curds are shipped in from Wisconsin, the cheese capital of the states! The Dutch recipe is a well kept secret and makes this cheese unique and flavorful! It's so Gouda, you may develop a "habit" for it! It's truly heaven sent!

The sessions involve going around to different stations based on ages of the goats. They also invite local artisans and food vendors - we got a beautiful wooden cheese board. They also offer samples of their cheeses as well as tubs of goat cheese to purchase. The truffle goat cheese is AMAZING! NOTE: Currently, the sessions are on pause due to COVID19, but I just want to give a shout out to the amazing work they put into this farm, caring for their goats, and their cheese making! As of March 2020, they are doing pre-order and pick ups for their cheeses - be sure to look at their websites for locations to grab this delicious local cheese and farm!

The farm is set in a beautiful hilly area with trees and rolling meadows. There are goats, chickens, peacocks, and the friendliest shaggy dogs you will ever meet. Wear boots or sneakers that you can lose to mud, and dress in layers. There is a very clean port o potty and a sink hooked to a (very cold!) well, so you can wash your hands. You will leave covered in hoof prints, fur, and animal slobber. I cannot speak to the locavore dinners held at the farm, but I would love to attend one. The owner is well travelled and versed on international cuisines, and she speaks with great fondness of other local producers. The farm's cheeses are incredible. My personal favorite is their black truffle chèvre. They also make delicious logs with herbes de Provence and pimento cheese. Their aged goat Parmesan is amazing. The cheeses are not strongly flavored of "goatiness"--I understand that is achieved by keeping male goats away from milk-producing females. All the cheese is delicately flavored, and the hot chocolate created for one of the snuggling days that I attended was decadent and divine. (I usually shy away from non-savory goat dairy products because of strong goaty flavors.) I highly recommend Caromont Farms. Be aware that there is virtually no cell reception at the farm.

I grabbed a shopping cart and my son was excited to jump in and help me pick out all of the goodies. I grabbed handmade cheese balls, classic old-time candy for our gingerbread house, pretzels stuffed with peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies that were proudly advertised as having no additives or preservatives. Don't worry, these cookies didn't last more than 5 minutes with my kids. Outside, there is a fun petting zoo, where you can buy feed and raise it up on a conveyer belt to feed the goats. Also, there are playgrounds that are fantastic. They're also available to buy but so nice the kids could experience such a high quality play set while I shopped. It was one of our highlights in visiting Madison.

The store was very organized and had such a huge variety of products and options to browse through. Everyone was friendly, and I truly could've spent an hour just walking around looking. Even at checkout, the cashier was very kind and welcoming. I would definitely stop back in if I'm ever in the area again!
