For the price, I thought Bellissima was great. I've gone to some of the more expensive spas in the area (Claremont, for one) and the prices here were significantly lower and the services just as nice. I also got a walk-in appointment which was great, and it seemed like there were a lot of good package deals. The place is cute, the pictures on the site don't do it justice and they offered me tea and water with lemon several times. I liked that because if there's one thing I don't want, it's dehydration. Things I didn't like as much: I got a salt scrub which was really a massage that used salt. I was hoping to have the top 10 layers of my epidermis removed and that didn't happen. The facial I got was great but it didn't actually last the full 50 minutes and seemed to contain a lot of head scratching. I'm pretty good at scratching my own head, so I'm not sure if I need a large portion of my facial dedicated to it. read more

Reaching the half century mark deserved a great day of pampering, just what they provided at Bellissima! I chose the "Experiencing Paradise" package and added on an additional 30 minutes to the massage. Since it was my birthday and they offer a birthday discount, the cost was an amazing deal. As others have said, ask for Thanh for the massage - her fingers found every knot in my back & shoulders, and worked out most of them. Her technique is relaxing, then stimulating. A great massage. The mani/pedicure was wonderful. The parrafin wax was just right and left my hands feeling "oh-so-soft". I don't recommend the natural nail polish, it was still gouge-able today. I've had a couples massage and one of the speciality massages and both were excellent. I was super muddy from a hike and garden work since I got a last minute appointment and they made me super super feel welcome despite that. My boyfriend treated me with a spa package which consisted of an hour massage, 30 minute facial and a mani/pedi. It seemed a little questionable from the outside since the spa is in the basement of an old Victorian. The inside looked a little better and exuded a rustic, natural ambiance. I was ushered by a nice Asian lady into the massage room. Then I quickly submitted to her magic fingers for the next hour. Her hands were firm yet gentle at same time, and were precise in their moves. She did my facial as well which was also lovely. Although it was a basic facial with no extractions, her magic fingers were also at work. Surprisingly enough, she also did my nails. Unfortunately, the magic stopped there. I chose white nail polish for my hands and the paint job was done very poorly. My toes were a bit better but it was still a mediocre job. I'm assuming her hands must be tired from the massage and facial, which is why they should consider having a separate nail technician. I would come back again for a massage. read more

Thanh performed two as-painless-as-can-be wax services and she's got me hooked on a monthly basis from now on. FYI, her days off are Sundays. Had a wonderful Swedish Massage & Facial with Ina today & I feel great. The ambiance is really calm and inviting. The stress relief starts the moment you walk in. Ina is very good at what she does and made sure to tell me to let her know if I need any specific areas worked on or to communicate if I felt uncomfortable. No complaints, I just let her work her magic. The facial was also soothing and relaxing. Thank you for accommodating same day services! My only need was wishing I could add another treatment :) I scheduled more services for future dates before I even walked out the door. Bellissima has always done me right! I have indulged in their pampering package specials many times over the years & for what you get, the prices are UNBELIEVABLE! Massage + facial+ hot tub soak or salt scrub exfoliation + mani + pedi for around $150. Just ask what the package specials are or they usually have some coupons inside the door. The last time I went, I was there I was there for 3 hours(!) doing all of the above and was jelly-like after because I was so relaxed. They always do a great job on manis & pedis - scented salt scrub exfoliation on your legs 'n feet + a good massage of them as well. Whenever girlfriends come into town, we have a spa day together here. They can never believe how affordable it is. Monique is great ,as is Thanh. The atmosphere is zen-inspired. It's in the basement of a house, near Ashby & Shattuck. Also they carry DDF products, which saves me a trip to Sephora. Bellissima is a great spa that more of you should be indulging in, so get on over there - you deserve it ; ) read more

Today I got myself a Brazilian wax at Bellissima Day Spa and I'm happy to say it was overall a really great experience! I purchased a Groupon for the wax (since the holidays have me a little too strapped to want to pay full price at the other salon I like here in the bay area) and made my appointment via email. I did have to call in to provide a credit or debit card (to prevent no-shows) but it was all super easy and quick. The email response was the day after I'd sent mine, and I'd emailed in the evening too. It was easy to get an appointment within a few days and it was exactly the timeframe during the day I was looking for. The spa itself is really cute and cozy. It's in a great location for someone like me who takes the bus everywhere but it also looked like there would be decent street parking for those who drive. I was a few minutes early but they were ready for me. I had my wax done by Thanh. She was really nice and made great conversation - since it's the holiday season we talked about Christmas plans and then her daughter who's studying in college a subject I worked with. Conversation during a wax is pretty important in my opinion and it flowed really easily with Thanh!! I must say I wasn't in love with her technique for a few reasons, but the final product is every bit as well done as I've ever had before. This wax took about 25 minutes compared to the 15 I'm used to, and instead of doing large sweeping rips, she would do many smaller, quicker ones. Some places were more painful than I'm used to because of multiple pulls, but some were surprisingly painless. She was very thorough and did tweeze at the end and I really appreciate that. Nothing worse than paying for a wax and then having to tweeze yourself for 20 minutes at home!! Note: It had been since September since I'd been waxed last. I did some trimming on my own in that time but she trimmed me before starting so I wouldn't have excessive pain. My only other note is that unlike a lot of other places I've been to, she didn't grab a brand new stick each time. Some people might be uncomfortable with the sanitation of that, so it's something to keep in mind. It was definitely a different experience than the waxes I've had in the past, like my usual spot in San Diego I'd gone to for.... 5-6 years, but it was well worth trying out. read more

I got permanent makeup on my upper lids, and they did such a nice job! I didn't want it too thick, and the woman who did it made sure she knew exactly what I wanted before she started. The procedure wasn't painful, more like an itchy feeling. They really made me feel pampered, and answered all of my questions before hand. I even brought my sister and a friend who were interested, and she let them watch the procedure. I've also had a pedicure here, which didn't last as long as I was hoping for. The massage was decent, but everyone there is really nice. I also had my eyelashes tinted, but they didn't let the dye sit long enough, so it didn't really make them as dark as I'd hoped. I couldn't see much of a difference, and probably wouldn't do it again there. read more

Thank you Thanh for fixing my skin! After a weekend in the snow, piling on sunscreen and balm, I came home to a very congested mess that I thought was adult acne. I went in for a series of facial treatments and Thanh worked wonders to clean out my clogged pores! Not only did Thanh get in and do a pretty aggressive clean up, she ended the facial with a terrific cooling and calming mask and neck & shoulder massage. i needed a day of pampering and all the other places i looked up were closed. i came up to the bay area just for the summer, so I'm far away from my favorite wax salon (down in SD). i prefer the floors waxed instead of a 80s shag carpet. this cute little salon is on the bottom floor of an apt house. i appreciated that there was tons of street parking and a sign clearly labeling the salon. going in, it very peaceful and calm. the ladies were all fabulous in service greeting and performance. definitely would come back here again. i didn't catch the name of my masseuse but I LOVE HER. she was the only caucasian woman that i saw but she was built like a gladiator. she was super sweet and the BEST masseuse i have ever met. she knows her shit and she definitely will find every daymn knot that has been bugging you. I wasn't even in that much pain coming in, but every muscle knot she rubbed out was like heaven. she was really sweet and funny too. note to self: i need to call and find out who she is. i'd actually come up from san diego to see her. that's how great she was. facial/ waxing girl was a tiny vietnamese girl. she gave a great facial and my face was absolutely glowing afterwards. i actually fell asleep during the facial and felt so yummy. :) her waxing skills - however- need some work. she was really nice about it but man.. ow! i would definitely recommend this spa (especially for the masseuse!! xoxo) and it was relatively well priced. they have other little packages that sound entertaining and i plan on coming back for sure! read more

We did settle on a time and I just noted I wanted a massage (easy enough for her to handle). I showed up early to l see what they had for treatments (their web site is down). At that juncture I opted for a package special: 1 hour massage, 30 minute facial and 15 minute hot tub soak for $105. Quaint place and they try hard. BEST MASSAGE EVER! Twice! Amanda and Thanh are both great. Its true - they almost never answer the phone and when they do, getting someone to understand you may be a challenge. But once its all figured out- you'll be absolutely delighted with your massages. DE- lited! I was- i still am! Skip the hot tub, its in a small room with nice decor but its shallow and too small for long bodies like me. I have been here for massage and for a pedicure. Both times I had mediocre experiences. My massage was supposed to be deep tissue and was not more than a firm Swedish massage. I really enjoyed my pedicure while I was having it, they gave a great light foot and leg massage with it. But after, it started chipping within 2 days. My polish lasts waaay longer than that. That visit, I was treating my sister in-law who got a manicure. She had to have then do hers over for a few rough spots that she found. My final gripe is that they advertise a walk-in special on their sign and on their recorded message, but they usually don't have people available for walk-ins. I called to try to make an appointment, no one answered and I heard the message, so we went on down. They told us it was going to be an hour wait. Luckily, we had to go to the store anyways. I am not lowering their rating further because they still honored the advertised special price. If they hadn't they would have 1 star. read more

I give Briana 6 stars and the spa itself 3 stars. I was in Berkeley for a friend's wedding, so I joined the bride for a little pampering. As soon as Briana laid her intuitive fingers on me, I was instantly filled with sadness. I knew that her fingers are the only ones my knotted up muscles will ever melt for, but our relationship was doomed from the start. We could never survive this long distance relationship between Berkeley and LA. The whole hour and half was so bitter sweet. I get massages pretty regularly, so I know a good massage when I get one. Briana wasn't just good. She is the best masseuse I have ever had in my entire life! My session was on Saturday and I probably would have gone back on Monday before I returned home if it wasn't her day off. As for the spa itself, it was okay. My other two friends said their massages were mediocre. I was there late August and the room was a bit too warm since they have no AC. The sheets and the cushioning on the massage table were soaking wet when I got off. I tried not to think about the dried up sweat that was there when I first laid down. I miss you Briana! I came here for a quick pamper. Although the hours on Yelp say one thing, the reality is that this salon is actually closes about an hour to an hour and a half earlier. Having said that, I'm extremely appreciative that a manicurist stayed later to accommodate me. The environment is very relaxing and zen (exactly what I needed) and I felt very comfortable immediately. My manicurist (I don't quite remember the name) did a mediocre job, overall. I asked for a trim and colour and she trimmed a LOT off and the colour was done with very old nail polish. I feel the specialty here is not nails but massages and spa treatment. Pleasantly surprised by this gem of a place. Was skeptical at first (the pictures do not do this place justice) but I had a great experience here. Did a couples massage with my boyfriend (his first time) and we both enjoyed our massages. I wish I could remember our masseuses names! Both were fantastic and mindful of injuries. We also got the back scrub done (my skin felt so soft!) in addition to the hydrating facials. My coworkers were complimenting my skin for days! Very affordable compared to similar spas in the area. The ambiance of the place oozes relaxation. We were greeted with hot tea while we waited to be taken to the massage room and the overall vibe is just peaceful. They have a wonderful garden in the front of the building that is nice to look out to. Overall, I would highly recommend Bellissima! I absolutely felt relaxed during my massage and rejuvenated after my 75min massage with Thana (sp?)! I called last minute and thankfully they had a spot available same day and the exact time I wanted. I would recommend calling ahead of time to check if there are any last minute cancellations. But boy will you feel left out if you cancelled. Even on the phone the lady had a calm, quiet, and kind voice. When I arrived, Thana greeted me, then we promptly went to the room, in which, she gave me a couple minutes to undress. I noticed she was rushing me but later on realized she rushed me so that she can spend more time on the massage. Before we began, I asked her to focus more on my shoulders, neck, and upper back, with a Medium-Strong pressure. She kindly obliged and told me to tell her when her pressure got too hard. She immediately started focusing on the spots that I pointed out, and fell into sweet relaxation. All in all she covered the entire body, head to toe, left fingers to right fingers. And in the end she came back to the focus points and ended it there. She also gave me the option to wipe the oil off or keep it on, but she advised to keep the oil for another hour so the it can soak into my skin. After getting dressed, I was greeted with a cup of cold water with an orange slice in it. Again the entire experience was incredibly serene. This is one day spa where you get what you pay for! I hate it when I go to get a pedicure and the massage is pitiful and the place is ugly..this place ISN'T that. I really enjoyed my pedicure at Bellissima today. I really liked the lighting and the environment itself. It is a very relaxing, chill environment. I really liked how they used really pretty bowls for your pedicure instead of those jet basin things. The bowls are cleaner! The rose petals in the bowl were also a very nice touch. The foot/leg massage was awesome and the paint was also very good! You feel like they actually care about their customers. Plus it was only $25 and every dollar was worth it! I needed a massage badly but since I usually go to health spas in SF and don't know of any good spots in the East Bay, I was reluctant to take a chance on some place new. Desperate for relief however, I ran a quick search and found Bellissima Zen Spa. Priti was my massage therapist and she did a stellar job! During the massage, she'd check in to make sure the level of pressure was exactly how I preferred. She was professional and a pleasure to speak with. I had the best table massage I've ever had at this spa. Brianna is a great massage therapist. She has a good sense for what areas of the body require the most attention, and really takes the time to work on them. I have frequent back and shoulder issues, but after a 90-minute sports massage with Brianna, I was free of pain for the next couple days. She's a miracle worker with her healing hands. I'd recommend her to anyone looking for a great massage. The spa itself is in a nice spot along Shattuck, but you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it. The interior is nice and clean. The only issue I had was with some noise from the neighbors the 1st day I was there. But I think that was a unique situation, since my following visit was nice and peaceful. read more

Usually I'm fairly ticklish, but the atmosphere (decor, music, tea, etc) was so relaxing in the heated beds that the massage was just completely soothing. They were able to accommodate me at the last minute and when I got lost on my way there, were totally patient with my three phone calls saying I was lost again. Even though I was 1/2 an hour late for my appointment, Monique (I think that was her name) was gracious and just concerned that I make it there OK. Now on to the services..I think this was the most pain free bikini wax I've ever received. It must have been something in the way she pulls the strip really, really quickly. I can't believe I just found this haven. The moment you walk through the door, calmness abounds. The person who helped me on the phone and the therapist was fantastic with the right amount of pressure. I got a massage with added cupping, and a facial. It was heaven. I felt it was reasonably priced. They were able to accommodate me just the day prior for all these services, and I saw they were able to accommodate a walk-in for an hour massage as well.
