We stopped in at Longplay's first tasting room in Newberg where we met owner Todd Hansen and sampled his other wines and experienced his love for music. Da dum, turns out it was impossible not to fall in love with his laid-back passion for wine and music, much of which is older than he is. We gladly joined his wine club when he finally got around to starting one. Now he's got this fancy schmanzy industrial vibe winery with spacious indoor and outdoor seating and lotsa room for making wine. His Hi-Tone has been my fave, although since surpassed by his Experience. The Jory Bench is worthy of the wait, and the Lia's continues to deliver (thanks for continuing to make this, Todd). For a classic Oregon experience, I highly recommend Longplay.

A bit of info on Longplay: Todd Hansen the owner purchased the Jacob-Hart vineyard in 2004 and renamed the vineyard after his daughter Lia. Know for its Pinot Noir Todd is putting out some very good varitals. His first bottle was introduced in 2007 named Lia's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007. The winery has a Industrial feel and very clean, as the name implies "Longplay" is about vinyl records and Todd is always putting something on the turntable. There are great concert posters hanging on the walls going back to the 60's. A cool vibe all the way around with excellent music and great tastes. Todd & his staff hang out while your tasting to talk about wine and music, very cool. Stop in I assure you'll enjoy the wine and vibe. The tasting room is modern, very clean lines and lots of space and windows so you can continue appreciating the beauty all around you even if you are inside. On warmer days, the large deck is the perfect place to sip the day away! But we are all here for the wine, and with Lynn Penney-Ash as the winemaker, you know the Pinots are going to be fabulous. The founder, Dr. Madiah Revana, has also acquired properties in Napa and Argentina, yes, Argentina, for their soil variety and climate. So if you are a fan of the bigger, bolder reds like me, you will have plenty of options. We were hosted by Michael who was personable, engaging, and full of interesting facts. I've been to a hundred+ wine tastings, easily, so learning something new was both surprising and appreciated. Our table was set for us with the appropriate wine glasses and a menu welcoming our party by name, always a classy touch. The first glass, their Signature Chardonnay (2023), was delicious! Not heavy on oak or that California buttery taste, it was light and crisp, very pleasing, very drinkable. We moved onto Pinots, a variety they are known for, and it was easy to see why. Then moved on to some bigger CA reds. On Michael's recommendation, we ordered a pizza which was very tasty and went well with the wine. We ended up purchasing several bottles, not out of pressure, but because we absolutely loved their wine. There are close to 900 wineries in Willamette Valley, and growing, we are always looking to try new places to experience which is how we ended up at Alexana. In our group, we are all members of several, yet we were all tempted to join this winery because they are a stand out in all of the ways that matter. It may be time to leave a club to make room for Alexana, a true gem!

The food also is really great, the Pepita dip is so flavorful and fresh, with veggies to help you feel healthy while drinking wine, can't go wrong there. The wines however are just okay to good. There are a few older pinots that are really good, there's the malbec and cab from their sister wineries that's also really good, and then there's a good number of just okay wines. I'm not upset about it, but I just don't think this has the power of some of the wineries out there!

We visited during a Wine Share month, a great way to discover new wineries without any risk. The Garden Cottage tasting room on the lower level of the property was not open in February so we enjoyed our tasting in the home. literally. We sat in the living room on couches around a coffee table while the adjacent dining room was being utilized by a party of 8. it was a great vibe, warm and inviting. Our host explained they use regenerative farming and winemaking processes. Their wines are aged in clay amphora casks, something we had never heard of, which imparts unique, earthy characteristics. Since the clay allows for a slow oxidation, the wine has softer flavors without the oak derived butter, vanilla and spice flavors. It's a middle ground between the oxidation of oak bottles and the more sterile stainless steal. We enjoyed the education and the wines! It's also great that the Studio offers a perfect space for making wine - in some cases startups but often winemakers that are between other gigs or just have small enough production that it doesn't make sense to build out a space of their own. I have visited many times and know a number of winemakers who have utilized this space over the past 20-ish years, and I'm a fan. They hosted a release party this August for McCollum Family Vineyards which was great and the wine was fantastic plus C.J. and Elise McCollum were amazingly gracious hosts. J.C. Somers winery has returned to the Studio in 2026 and makes some of the better wine you'll find anywhere, Jay Somers has been making world class wine in Oregon since the 1990's but currently makes a couple thousand cases on his personal label available at the Studio. Definitely stop by for a tasting if you're in the area, a cool place to visit and some great wine to be tasted/purchased.

Despite the limited number of Yelp reviews, all of which were positive, we trusted her advice--and we couldn't be happier that we did. A Quaint, Welcoming Atmosphere: Lonesome Rock stood out immediately for its smaller, intimate setting. Unlike larger, commercial wineries, it felt peaceful and uncrowded, giving us a sense of exclusivity and comfort. Upon arrival, Danny and Suzie, the owners, greeted us warmly. They had prepared a personalized flight sheet with our names, a beautifully set table, and delicious snacks--including freshly baked Gougeres from Suzie's oven. As a thoughtful touch, the recipe for these French cheese puffs was included on the back of the flight sheet, so we can't wait to try making them at home!
