We LOVE Gary Wood and the folks at Belmont Wheelworks. We met when my son (who has Cerebral Palsy from a stroke in utero) was in his first bike race-- Gary helped us adjust our bike before the race. My son bit the bug on bicycling and when he was ready for a new bike, Gary helped us find the perfect bike, making some accessibility modifications like switching the brake sides to favor my son's stronger side, etc. I got my Stumpjumper here 20 years ago and Belmont Wheelworks keeps on delivering because of the people! read more

Here's a collection of my terrible experiences at Wheel Works: Story #1: Took a bike in to get an insurance write up for estimated cost of repair/replacement (my biked was pretty much totaled). They said the estimated time for this would be around 5 days. After 10 days of them not contacting me, I called them. They said the write up was ready so I went to shop only for them to tell me it is not ready and to come back in a couple days. When I went back, the person who did the write up lost the paper and we had to go back AGAIN for a new paper. A 5 day simple write up turned into a 3 week back and fourth with this shop (and 3 weeks with no bike which is my main form of transportation). Story #2: I asked for 2 tubes for my bike and they gave me 2 different sized tubes BOTH OF WHICH WERE NOT THE CORRECT TUBE. Story #3: I asked for a tube for my bike and I gave them the model (which they sold to me). The person asked me what size it is which I forgot. So he replied "well I don't know that bike go figure that out yourself" (while he was at a functioning computer in which he could have looked it up for me). Story #4: I also had a kick stand repair after it fell off (my bike has a specialize built in kickstand) and it fell off again after 2 rides. read more

We had just had a very positive experience next door at the kids shop, and we were hoping to have a fun family day getting new bikes. Unfortunately, the man attempting to help me was rude, mean, and extremely unhelpful. I'm sorry I'm not a bike aficionado, that is literally why I was asking for help. After 25 years as a customer, I'm done with Belmont Wheelworks. I brought in 4 bikes for repairs, all which were purchased there and still had the sticker to prove it--when I picked them up, every one cost a lot more than the estimate, and no one called or texted to authorize the extra charges. Three bikes were ready, but they couldn't even locate the fourth--turns out, the repairs hadn't even started. The shop itself looked like a junkyard, with stuff crammed everywhere. No apology, just the staff blaming another employee for the mix-up right in front of me. I had to return a second time to get all my bikes. Both visits, I asked for advice on helmets, clips, and pedals. Both times, I was immediately steered toward the most expensive gear and treated rudely when I asked for affordable options. Unless you're buying a $4,000 bike, you're too much trouble for them. It's frustrating to watch customer service and integrity vanish after years of loyalty. I've since tried Conti in Lexington--more attentive, same pricing. Belmont Wheelworks has lost me forever. read more

I keep having frustrating experiences with the service department at Wheelworks. The owners/partners are not interested in hearing from their customers on service gaps. In spring 2025, I started engaging with the owner/partner to provide visibility to the service issues. Unfortunately, he has shown zero interest in engaging with me on intake errors, in which my problem either wasn't documented (when I reported 2 issues at intake) or confirmed (in the case of an intermittent electrical issue, which was troublesome for them to recreate, but I kept riding in on Error503). Finally after returning 5x, they engaged the manufacturer for troubleshooting support. 6 months later I have again needed to return 5x (!!!), this time to get the shifting working smoothly after I bent the derailleur on a rock. Even after all of the chain-related hardware was replaced - chain, cassette, derailleur, shifter cable & housing. Upon my 5th return did they finally acknowledge that there's a remaining issue, but also stated that they can't fix it to 100%. My follow-up (and currently open) question with them is whether they have been working with the manufacturer, Tern, for troubleshooting support. Across many interactions with both partners/owners, I've repeatedly been treated like a child. Sexism and ageism (I look several decades younger than I am - I'm a 50 yo grown ass woman) are unacceptable in 2025. On different occasions each partner commanded me to pickup the bike, even though it was clear that the issue wasn't resolved. What the heck! Sadly, these the only 2 Tern dealerships within biking distance are owned by these partners. They show zero interest in maintaining a good relationship with the growing local cargobike community. It's time for the community to work with Tern to either hold Tern accountable for better service, or to sign on another bike shop to also be a dealer. read more

I always thought of a bike fit session as a luxury, and nothing I couldn't dial in myself. Not so. Do yourself a favor and get a fit at Belmont Wheelworks with Ed Sassler and team. While the bike may be perfect, our bodies are not and a fit helps compensate for what we were dealt in range of motion, long-standing bad habits that have become normal and even one leg being longer than the other. Eh. I had been getting into cycling and looking for a good local bike shop (or LBS in the cycling parlance) but the service at Wheelworks is so consistently hit or miss that I can't in good conscience rate them more highly. My sense is they're swamped with business - each time I go, it's a steady line of people waiting - and so they're not much incentivized to, I don't know, be nice. Every time I've gone by myself, I've been flat-out ignored: no one offering to help or smiling or taking note of my existence. When I've gone with my husband, we've been acknowledged more often then when I'm by myself but it's still with this kind of attitude of being bothered to help. A few examples: - We went once about 45 minutes prior to closing for me to buy some new shoes. Talk about a great opportunity for the employees of Wheelworks to get a newbie cyclist excited or pass on any wisdom, right? Nope. No one came by to ask how we were doing, if we needed anything, offer any tips, etc. - When my husband called to ask about whether something was in stock at the store, the lady who answered the phone said, "Just to give you a hint, we do have a website." Well, not everything gets updated from inventory onto the website in real time. That's why people call the store to double check. If answering people's questions is such a hassle, just set up an automated voicemail. The two stars are for the mechanics who have done a bang-up job on our bikes and the boy who helped us out on our most recent visit who couldn't be more enthusiastic and friendlier. It's too bad because this is the closest, most convenient bike shop for us to access but I think I'll give Landry's a try. read more

If you enjoy being disrespected and working with people who can turn scary on a dime, ask for Ben. When asking questions about the bike I brought in earlier in the week (that they further broke during their "check up") he rudely told me "we're past that point and you need to catch up." He threw a mini tantrum and accused me of thinking that he was lying and then stormed away. All of this after he sauntered in late because he was having "personal issues." Frankly I was a little worried he was about to start yelling or even get physical with my husband. I asked for a manager to help and he seemed like he was trying to play hot potato until he realized that he had to help us because he was the manager. When asking the manager what happened, he replied "I guess he's just having a bad day?" Again, if you enjoy spending money and being treated like garbage, this is the place to go. I had such high hopes for this small local business but I guess I was wrong. On a side not, mental health issues are serious. If you need help, call out of work and go see a doctor. There's no shame in taking a sick day to get help. read more

I like the store. I was restoring my classic steel racer from bare frame, up. Lucky to work with Peter that knew exactly how to meld retro to mod effectively. He tracked down the parts I asked for, had great suggestions for the non-drivetrain stuff, and recommended good wheels and tires. It took a few weeks, but the bike turned out very good. I was a bit over budget, some of the small stuff was oddly pricier than I'd have liked considering online prices, but I needed Peter's insight to turn a hard core 80's racer, into a comfortable modern sporty recreation bike. The shop is crazy well stocked with bikes and gear. Many selections for whatever you need, not just one or two different models in a hodge podge of sizes or specs. Lots of customer traffic, it can get a bit overwhelming as the limited staff disappears into the back from time to time, so if you need quick assistance for extended interests, consider a weekday visit away from busy hours. read more

First review I've ever left on yelp, but my experience was so terrible I felt obligated to. I went to pick up my bike from getting serviced. They charged me $100+ more than the initial quote I received and could not explain the discrepancy. Additionally, I found out they had upcharged me on component repairs- putting more expensive components on the bike than I originally had- without asking. Staff was incredibly rude when I asked about the discrepancies. My wife, who had dropped the bike off for service, felt guilty that the "tune up" ended up costing ~$500. She called the store to follow up, and was shouted at by two people in the shop before she hung up the phone. I have read reviews below about the service staff being misogynist and rude to women- that rings particularly true. Very disappointing as we have had good experiences at the store in the past, but this was undoubtedly the worst bike shop experience I have ever had. read more

Clint is lucky to have a guy like Glen on his team of employees. (Fyi Gary your response was not helpful) My buddy got an Cervelo Apex 1 from Wheelworks. He Highly suggested that I meet up with him and check out the gravel bike. My friend crazy into into biking. What do I have to lose? I thought to my self. So I went down. Glen took his time to go through alot of things about the bike. Unfortunately they only had Cervelo GRX with the Shimano shifter in my season. The Apex has sram shifter. I slept on it picking GRX or Apex 1. Apex 1 had to be special ordered. When I went back to the shop Glen had great memory of helping me. He went through the whole process of the special ordering bike for me. Did me a solid and took a minimum deposit of $300.00 Once the bike arrived. Glen set me up from pedals to shoes to water bottles/bottle racks. Basically from a to the z. Super excited for my purchase. Belmont wheelworks has super knowledge and gentleman in Glen. I can stand at the register & the men don't acknowledge me, and today I inquired about a bike seat to 3 men who I had to interrupt as they clustered to talk, and not one offered to help in picking out a saddle. Oh, one guy came over after 5 minutes of me looking through saddles. This review is unfortunate. I purchased two bikes from them way back when I was younger. Fast forward to the present and I came back and purchased four bikes for my family in the last year. Always been a great experience. My son's BMX bike was recently stolen from our yard (we live in Cambridge, capital city of bike theft unfortunately). We came in once again and purchased a new bike for him, a Specialized Riprock 24. They emphasized over and over again that we had 14 days to return the bike for any reason. We've never had a reason to return any other bikes but it was reassuring to hear this nonetheless. We get home, he rides in the park across the street, and realizes the bike looks pink in the sun and not white like it did in the store. We tell him we can exchange it for the black one that was in the store, no worries! We called in literally two days later on Friday and explained to them the situation and asked if they still had the black one we saw in the store. It was about 5 pm, they close at 6 pm, and we were on our way there. They gave us a run around story, had two different employees get on the phone, and ended up telling us to come in the next day on Saturday with the bike cause they had to build the black bike and they'll figure it all out while we there. They also were extremely concerned about how many times he had rode the bike and asked a bunch of questions about the bike (was it scraped, was it left outside, etc). Again, we had just purchased the bike two days ago and he rode it ONCE. We come in the next day on Saturday with the bike for exchange and guess what? They had sold the black bike! They knew who we were as soon as we walked in and gave each other questionable looks and then the young guy had a story about how they just sold the black bike (he didn't make a note or tell any of the other employees we were coming in so no one knew not to sell the black bike apparently) and unfortunately had no idea when the next shipment would come in. I asked for a refund immediately as I was not going to get stuck with a bike that my son did not want. While the guy took his sweet time to process the refund, a very nice girl was going over different bikes with us but they were not what we wanted. Several minutes later, she finally had to ask him if he had processed the refund while he stuttered and said yes. We left feeling used and our time completely wasted. If we called the day before and were already on our way there but were told to come in the next day, the black bike that had to be built should have been put to the side with a note. The nice girl told us to check the website for when the Riprock would be back in stock. We get in the car and check the website and guess what? The black Riprock is in stock and ready to be ordered and picked up by Monday! (I did the full checkout just to make sure) Deceiving, misleading, and unhelpful. For someone who has purchased thousands of dollars worth of bikes from them, I will no longer be giving them my business. They lost a lifelong customer. read more

I bought a Specialized Turbo Creo SL Expert EVO bike (it's an e-bike) from Belmont Wheelworks (BW) at the end of February. I had trouble locating this bike at any bike shops in Massachusetts but BW had three of them in stock (M, L, and XL) so I was psyched to check the bike out in person. I bought the bike (well over $10K with tax) when I went to their Trapelo Road location to look the bike over and bought several biking-related items (Garmin bike computer, headlight, shoes, tool bag, bike fitting, seat, etc.). The bike purchasing experience was great. I worked with Scott, who was very friendly and patient and knew tons about the model I was purchasing as well as about e-bikes. I spent $100 for a fitting appointment and Jack handled that and ensured I got fitted to the new bike with the new shoes I had purchased. I had an issue with the bike I purchased being put on sale by Specialized for $750 less - I called BW to ask if they would refund me the difference (this was 2-3 weeks after I purchased the bike) and the person I spoke with was aghast that anyone would ask for a refund like this. Less than a week later Clint from Belmont Wheelworks left me vmail apologizing for the confusion about getting the $750 sale price difference refunded and stated that he would be issuing a credit to my credit card for the $750 plus tax. I was very happy to hear this! I was so thrilled that I returned to BW to purchase tire repair tools + sealant for the tires on my new Creo (and spent another $87). Clint was not available during my last visit so I was unable to thank him in person but hopefully he sees this and knows that I greatly appreciate him working with me on this issue. I also want to mention that there is a H-U-G-E selection of bikes at BW - the biggest I've seen since International Bike had a store in Allston in the nineties so if you are looking for a new bike, I would recommend you stopping at BW. I love the Specialized brand and to me they have the best and biggest selection of Specialized bikes I have ever seen. I went to Landry Bikes in Braintree before I purchased my Turbo Creo from BW and they worked very hard to sell me a Trek bike at a similar price point but my research and personal experience showed that the Specialized is a MUCH better bike. BW also has an excellent selection of shoes, seats, helmets, tubes, tires, repair kits, headlights, Garmin computers and tons of other gear for bikers of all descriptions. Some of the clothes I saw were very expensive ($200 for a pair of biking shorts???) but the selection is quite large and I would venture to guess that you can find anything you need for your biking workouts/excursions/commutes/whatever during one visit to BW. I will be taking my bike there as soon as I get ~150 miles on it for a free tune-up and I am looking forward to seeing how their service department is (I am sure they are top notch). read more

The service rep, Ben, appeared to be experiencing meth withdrawal and became confrontational when asked simple questions about what was wrong with my bike. This person clearly has serious mental health issues and the managers took no responsibility. You would be better off spending your money just about anywhere else. It really is shocking how poorly they treat people. It's hard to imagine but honestly, it really is that bad. There is always someone sitting at a small counter when you walk in, usually a middle aged-older man. Often a couple guys around him talking. Never once has anyone there acknowledged me. I really cannot believe it. I haven't gone back in years but we need a bike tire for a weekend trip and so I gave in as it's a mile from my house and they do stock everything. Same service from the center desk. I walked around him a couple times as an experiment but nothing. A young guy eventually came and helped me get the right tire. These guys are a joke. I ordered a road bike from Wheelworks due to the fairly good price, and I was subsequently met with really good service. The bike was shipped out within the week through UPS and was delivered by the following week. The bike was built very well, and I simply had to assemble the handlebars, saddle, and front wheel. In terms of online orders, Wheelworks is a solid place to buy bikes and accessories. Great discounts and a solid ordering experience, I would not hesitate in ordering from this place - I will definitely return! read more

I ended up driving all the way into Belmont to get what I wanted, but it was worth it. They had a great selection to choose from, everyone I spoke to was helpful, and they lowered their price to match a sale that was happening on the manufacturer's website. Brought my bike with 2 broken spokes and a broken derailleur hanger. Mechanic said because I didn't buy the bike there I would need to go to manufacturer to buy hanger. So I said, fine, I'll get the hanger while you are replacing the spokes. Got a call a week later saying because I didn't buy the bike there, they could not get the spokes, and it used unusual 4 gauge spokes (there is no such thing). Measured the spokes (13 gauge) and found them on Amazon and many other places. Kind of a pain to learn the particulars of measuring and replacing spokes. I should have taken the hint that they don't want to work on bikes not bought there and saved a lot of aggravation. Thing is, I had them fix the $6K+ Stromer I bought there and had a 3-month ordeal in getting the part, ending in me buying one from ebay and bringing it to their shop. read more

I shop at Belmont Wheelworks regularly. However, some of the staff are so arrogant and not service-oriented, I question why I go there at all. We buy almost all our bike supplies there. I have purchased pedals, cycling shoes, baskets, bells and my daughter purchased her bike there. I find the staff to be knowledgeable about bicycles. Last weekend, I went to see if I could purchase two sided pedals for my Peloton bike. I have SPD cycling shoes and was hoping not to buy yet another pair of shoes. The guy behind the cash register lectured me about the type of pedal Peloton uses saying that they use them only because the patents had expired and that they were not standard in cycling. He then walked over to where the pedals were, pointed out the different varieties. When I asked about the different varieties, he said I wouldn't need them because they were for cyclists who want to keep mud out or whatever. His attitude was pretty bad since it was clear he hates Peloton. If I want to feel ridiculed and belittled, I will go to Wheelworks in Belmont. I even called to speak to the owner who cursorily apologized but basically said that they have poor ratings on Yelp because of the volume they get in the store. Well, I guess I'll be one less person that accounts for that big volume. My business will be appreciated elsewhere. read more

In the beginning of the year I decided to have my bike tuned up at Belmont wheelworks. Simple work nothing fancy basic vbreaks and Shimano shifting. After keeping my bike for two days they called it's ready. Well...they adjusted my breaks in a way that my wheel wasn't spinning. And shifting tune was also questionable. My second visit with my road bike was equally disappointing. The person I was dealing with was rude and unpleasant. I wish I got his name... The truth is they have so much of foot traffic that they don't care anymore for quality of service and repair. read more

There are plenty of bike shops in greater Boston, just about any of them would be a better choice. Got a new set of tires there, which they installed for me. 5 miles into my first ride one of the tires exploded, so I took it back. They said they put the wrong rim tape on it and installed again. Made it 15 miles before exploding a second time. Had to get a refund. The entire process I encountered nothing but rude employees. The sales people don't know their way around a bike, and their mechanics can't seem to install a tube properly. If you're looking for a decent bike shop, keep on looking. EDIT: Thank you, Zoe, for responding to my review. It is genuinely encouraging to see that you are addressing concerns from customers here. However, if you're serious about customer service I would advise you to take a hard look at what could have been done better rather than writing the customer off as being difficult. In this case I asked multiple employees, multiple times if the tires would be a poor fit for my rims because that's exactly what I feared. I even asked to browse wheels because I was considering spending more money for an entire new set. I was discouraged from doing that, though, when the employee who showed me your wheel stock a) couldn't make a single recommendation to help me, and b) couldn't even tell me the prices of the wheels I was looking at (there were no price tags). Instead, I was assured with absolute confidence from 2 different employees that the Compass tires would be an excellent fit and that I would love them. When I took them in to be re-applied (after one of them exploded) I asked again if the fit was wrong. I was told that the issue was the rim tape and that I shouldn't be worried about the fact that the tube exploded again during repairs because that happens all the time. The mechanic even joked around, saying "you got 5 miles on them the first time, now they should be good for 10." The fact that these were your best mechanics makes me even more skeptical of your business. I admit that I'm not the most knowledgeable person in the world when it comes to bikes, but that's the case with a lot of people. That's why bike shops exist. I'm not holding you up to an unreasonable standard because the Boston area is FULL of amazing bike shops where you can expect to receive helpful advice and attentive customer service. For now I'll stand by my 1-star review. read more

If you like being dealt with as if you are a nuisance then Belmont WW is the place for you. If you like being overcharged then this is for you. As an experienced rider I know what I am talking about and yet these guys still treat you like you don't know anything. After a month waiting for my shocks to be reconditioned the rear shock nearly fell off after 5 minutes of riding since it had not been tightened and it was still not working properly?? Come on guys?! If you don't like your job, don't work in this industry and please no not take out your frustrations on customers. Will not be returning. It's a pity since it's got some nice things in the store, even though it's shamelessly expensive. read more
