Finally tried Belvedere yesterday. I originally tasted their food not too long ago at my friend's uncles funeral. They catered the food afterward. Met Ela, the owner... Who is fabulous! I tried the beef tripe soup, the Hungarian goulash and ice cream for dessert. The soup was out of this world, I loved it! The goulash, which was put on a small pizza, sized potato pancake, was also delicious! I'm definitely going back to The Belvedere, cuz it was worth every penny... Which in fact was reasonably priced for the portion. I highly recommend The Belvedere, and think you will be very happy & satisfied if you go there. read more

Every now and then, we get a hankering for a unique night out and neighborhood ethnic food. We wanted to hit the Norman Rockwell exhibit at the New Britain Museum of Art (well worth it) and Little Poland for pierogis and other classics. Belvedere was the best reviewed but we found the total experience disappointing despite some bright spots. First off, Little Poland has a reputation for food not warm, chatty service. Even with a reservation, the Belvedere staff seemed unprepared and almost disappointed we showed for our late reservation. We waited an inordinate amount of time for a larger table to fit us was cleared, without anyone taking a drink order or doing much of anything. Drinks were small and watery. Things perked up with the best borscht we've tasted, although it's served warm not the traditional cold. The Caesar salad was huge and tasty but not sure why it's on a polish menu. The pierogis were just ordinary; light on filings and served with absolutely nothing else; they were also lukewarm. The Galumpki was more generous and tasty but the potato pancake with goulash was a complete miss. The pancake while large was over fried and acrid at the edges and you were hard pressed to find a decent chunk of beef or piece of carrot in the meager drizzle of goulash on top. $26.95 for this? The atmosphere was a bit sterile and didn't have that old world feel we were looking for; Miami vice and 80's music videos on the bar TV didn't help. We can't really recommend this spot to others. read more

I recently had lunch for the first time at Belvedere because my long time go to spot in Little Poland closed. This is so close to a 4.5 Star review. There were just a few things that were a touch off. The restaurant is divided into at least two parts. I never made it into the second room. The first room was fairly nice. High ceilings. Red brick walls. Large-tiled floor. There was movie related art. I ate a quick lunch alone, but there was a table of apparent business colleagues dining there as well. Service was good. I don't usually do this because I feel like there are better ways to order in a Polish restaurant, but I ordered the Polish sampler. It was fairly typical. Hunter's Stew. Stuffed Cabbage. 2 Potato Pierogi. Kielbasa. And Potato Pancakes. The flavors of the Hunter's Stew and Stuffed Cabbage were good, but both dishes needed to be hotter IMO. The large potato pancakes were really crispy and enjoyable in parts, but they could have been more done towards the middle. They were cooked through, just not ideal. The pierogis were about average for a nice Polish restaurant. The kielbasa was good quality, but could have been a touch less done on the outside for me. I'll definitely return to Belvedere. I'll order one dish next time, as the various components of a sampler like this require great coordination so that everything is peak. Side note. They had amazing bread that you could buy for home use. I don't know the names of Polish breads, but it was nice-crispy on the outside and soft and fresh inside. 4 Stars read more

First off, the service was amazing. This place is definitely authentically Polish, all the waitstaff had Polish accents. our waiter was very attentive, but pleasantly quiet, so we didn't feel bothered. We ordered a chicken hot sandwich (zapiekanka z kurczakiem), fried sheep cheese (oscypek), and the belvedere platter (came with stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, potato pancakes, pierogies, and hunter's stew). The star of the show for us was definitely the sandwich. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had, and HUGE. So much bang for your buck. The fried sheep cheese was fine, what made it stand out was that it came with a cranberry sauce on the side which was a delightful surprising complement. I loved the potato pancakes. The pierogies were fine. We asked for them fried, but they definitely came boiled. They were just a little lacking in flavor. The kielbasa was also delicious. The hunters stew was fine to me, but my partner really loved it. And I did not like the stuffed cabbage at all, but my partner also ate that up. Only thing I didn't like about the ambiance was that the napkins were all satin, so they weren't great for wiping your mouth, and they kept falling off our laps because they were so slippery. I had dinner here with my family on a Saturday evening. Initially we were told our wait would be around 45 minutes, but we only waited about 15 minutes. We were seated downstairs, which was very spacious and comfortable. The menu offered many great authentic dishes. I was in the mood for a little bit of everything so I ordered the Belvedere Platter - stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, potato pancakes, pierogies and hunter's stew. Everything was absolutely delicious...I was excited about having leftovers for the next day. A family member ordered the Hungarian Goulash and devoured the entire thing, while another got the Small Belvedere Platter. If you haven't been here before, I highly suggest you give them a try. I've been living in the area for a couple of years and this location looks nice and I always wanted to give it a go. I finally did on a day I needed to leave my place for some work that had to be done so I just popped in not really knowing what to expect. I'll set the scene, when you walked in, it's nice, and gives an ambiance to "a little fancy". I had on sweats and a tank top under my coat and there was a couple there on a date so I automatically felt like I was a bit underdressed, but I didn't care! My money is green just like everyone else's! But I do think if maybe I was dressed nicer, the waitress would've talked to me a bit more since it was just me and it was clearly my first time there and my first time at a Polish restaurant. I ordered a really cool special that they offer that has an app, entree, and dessert for $25.00! I thought that was an amazing deal especially in this economy. The pirogies type I ordered were suggested from the waitress-- potato & I said to fry them, but maybe boiled would've been better? It was my first time and I just wasn't flattered. I ordered the salmon- it was good. The side dishes were ok. Not bad in flavor, but could've used a little more taste. The dessert was apple pie but it was almost like an apple cake custard; it was a no for me. The waitress was not mean, but not super friendly or inviting either, but I also believe this is a European demeanor, so I didn't take it offensively. I was left alone for the most part -- they would only come by to ask if I was good. In no way do I want to make it seem like this was a bad experience, it's just my honest review of the place. I do believe this is a great spot for folks who like Polish cuisine and understand the culture and language since it seems like the workers there are of Polish descent. Also a great place for Americans (white). The location itself is nice, the music they had going was good and it's also nice that they have a small parking lot. Went there Saturday afternoon. The staff greeted us like they were doing us a favor finding us a table. The service was mediocre at best. Potato pancakes were deep fried greasy. Excellent Polish food in a very Polish part of Connecticut. We ate here earlier today. Unfortunately, most of the restaurant was closed off to us for a party. We ate in the bar area and did not get to see the rest of the restaurant. The ambiance was very sleek and modern, and we were especially impressed by the unusually-shaped coffee cups we saw. We ordered three things: Polish white borscht, the breaded chicken cutlet, and the sample platter. Every dish was excellent. The soup was the best, with its creamy lemon flavor, egg, and chunks of ham. The only complaint I have is that the food was very slow. It took nearly half an hour for the soup to come out. I had no idea New Britain had a fancy Polish restaurant. Our waitress was so sweet and involved with our young kids. We had the BARSZCZ CZERWONY, which is a beet soup with dumplings, and the white barszcz. I tried the fried sheep cheese OSCYPEK which I had never had before. It is served with the cranberry jelly which adds a nice sweet note to the saltiness of the cheese. The texture of the cheese almost reminds me of a chicken nugget. I liked it. I got the small Belvedere Platter and chose, kielbasa, bacon & potato piergoie and golbaki (stuffed cabbage.) I was surprised that they don't seem to pan fry the pierogie since that's how my family prepares them. The 2 kiddos had a plate with mashed potatoes topped with dill, sautkraut, and of course kielbasa. I like the texture of the skin on the kielbasa it's nice and crisp/charred. My husband took our kid to the restroom and said it was the fanciest bathroom he'd ever been to at a restaurant. The room we were in was also the room that they use to rent out for private events. Can't say I'm crazy about the Belvedere. The parking lot is tiny, and nearby parking is either nonexistent or on a slope. The waitress took forever to show up and take the order. The advertised Polish ambiance isn't: a black and white portrait of a sour-faced Al Pacino from Scarface dominates the dining area, which certainly didn't help me digest. The food is not high Polish cuisine, but rather Polish comfort food. Nonetheless the price tag came to nearly $100. I can't really say that going there was bad, I don't regret going, but nothing about it inspired me to want to go again. I wouldn't stop anyone from going there, but you can find better. read more

A group of us recently went to Belvedere. I was holding the restaurant door waiting for a friend to pay the parking meter. The waitress yelled across the room to shut the door because she said it was windy. She could have come up to me and asked politely but instead she embarrassed me, my friends and herself. When we arrived there was only 6 parking spots and all were occupied. Everyone else in our group had to pay the parking meters. Food was good but next time we will go to Taste of Poland. read more

This is our go-to place for a delicious Polish meal. The restaurant is beautifully decorated (including dinnerware) and also has an outdoor seating area. Food is, in my opinion, the best Polish meal in the area. The potato pancakes with smoked salmon and crème fraiche is our favorite appetizer. They also make delicious bigos, the goulash with potato pancake is huge and yummy, pierogi and golabko and specials do not disappoint. There is a full service bar. If you're not inclined to drink, order the iced tea! You will be pleasantly surprised! I'm looking forward to my next foray into all that Little Poland has to offer already. I went for the "Taste of Greater New Britain" prix five which includes an app, an entree and a dessert all for a steal of a price at $20.18! 3 Pierogis (5/5): This appetizer was demolished in seconds. Each pierogi was stuffed with a delicate combination of farmer's cheese and potatoes in the most supple of pierogi skins. These were also topped with a pinch of caramelized onions which added a delightful sweetness to the dish. Hungarian Goulash (5/5): OMG. The potato pancake is TO DIE FOR. Belvedere's potato pancake was unbelievably crispy, a textbook definition of perfectly fried potatoes. Unlike American hash browns, the Polish potato pancake is more than just fried shredded taters. Its center was soft and glutinous thanks to the matzo meal. Having been fried in schmaltz, this dish's aroma had all heads turning my way. My inner child was in fried potato heaven as I took each successive bite. The goulash on top made for a perfect soul mate to the pancake as well. It was a hearty stew of beef and melt-in-your-mouth onions and carrots. Tiramisu (5/5): One bite was all it took to ascertain this dessert was homemade. The mascarpone was light and fluffy. The syrup drowned lady fingers delivered a perfect hit of espresso. For $20.18, I was more than satisfied. Five stars hands down! My family and I went here on a Monday afternoon so we had no problem grabbing a table. Our waitress was super friendly and nice which made our experience even better. My mom, sister and I got the small Belvedere platter with galumpkis, potato pancakes and kielbasa while my other sister got an entree of potato pancakes. Everything was amazing! I am not usually a fan of galumpkis but these were fantastic! The sauce was out of this world too! I also loved the kielbasa as it had a nice crunchy coating but juicy tender center! And last but the least the potato pancakes- wow- obviously fresh and absolutely delicious! After our meal we also were given some polish candy with our bill which was a cute way to end our visit. By no means am I'm an expert on Polish food I was invited here by a friend who is originally from Poland so my expectations were pretty high when I accepted the invitation. It's evident that this part of town has a heavy Polish influence since most of the staff spoke Polish fluently. After enjoying a few top shelf Vodka Martinis and at the suggestion of my friend I decided to do a sampler platter to get a little taste of their specialities. Once the giant platter of food arrived there was little doubt that I would never be able to eat the entire platter but I certainly would achieve my objective which was to get a taste of everything. - Grilled Kielbasa - You can get the more original version which is boiled but after eating the grilled I'd recommend getting this mildly spicy sausage grilled and you won't be disappointed the scored link was absolutely delicious a little mustard made this a real winner. - Stuffed Cabbage - This mixture of rice and ground meat was seaoned perfectly before being wrapped in the cabbage leaf and simmered in a light tomato broth the texture was memorable I would definitely do this again. - Signature Potato Pancakes - Some choose to enjoy this delicate cake of potato and who knows what else with a side of sour cream I beg to differ, they need nothing but a fork to enjoy they were perfect. - Perogie - I've tried these a few times over the years but never were any elevated to this level they were small and sautéed not oily or greasy but not dried out either I'm thinking these came from grandmothers recipe because they aren't like any I've experienced before. A+++ - Hunter Stew- I have no clue what was in this, but I do know it was very hardy and a meal in itself I'm glad the sampler portion was small so I might enjoy the rest of the offerings. And lastly I want to comment on the service and hospitality it was second to none we were treated like we were the most special guest. The restaurant side is elegant white table cloths and beautiful decor, the bar side had a great ambience around a giant circular bar the kind of place you can have a conversation and mingle with the other clientele. I think the Belvedere does a very good job on just about everything. Their Pickle and Sorrel Soups are probably some the very best I've had anywhere. Their Polish entrees like Pierogis, Golabkis, Bigos, Schnycel, Kapusta etc. are equally as good, I doubt even the most Polish among us would have anything negative to say about this nice little eating establish in New Britain's "Little Poland". I find the service friendly, helpful and food arrives quickly from the kitchen. They have Zywiec Beer on tap and a number of Polish bottled beers. I must say I am a big fan of Polish Lager beers which are clean crisp to the taste and tend to run higher in alcohol content than their American counterparts. You won't be disappointed when dining at BC&R and if you are not familar with Polish food this might be a very good place to begin you journey. read more

The potato pancakes were the best I've ever eaten - light, crispy and not overly salted. The stuffed cabbage was mild and tender. I sampled marinated spring salad which came with my husband's dinner. It was delicious crispy, refreshing. Some thing I would love to learn how to make on my own. We tried the cheesecake for dessert. It was very light and fluffy. our friends who tried this restaurant complained that the service was slow. It made for a relaxing enjoyable afternoon to be able to chat with friends and enjoy delicious food. The bathroom was spotless. First time trying Polish food, but I came here with my Polish friend who says that it's legit. It was a little intimidating at first since my friend and waitress were speaking in Polish (she does speak English, FYI). There is more than one entrance, if you enter from the bar side and don't want to sit there, just walk on through to the dining side. I got the small belvedere plate to try a little bit of everything. They also have a sweet plate if that's more of your taste, but I wanted savory. Pirogi and potato pancake (just like a hash brown) are safe choices that most people will like. That cabbage though, was not what I expected, in fact you don't taste much of it since it's been cooked down and filled with a meat filling. Sorrel soup (I don't know if that's actually the name; it was green) - stole a spoonful of friend's soup. It was very creamy and flavorful. Would try again. Main dish - we both got the chicken cutlet, with coleslaw and mash potatoes. Everything was delicious, but the coleslaw was the surprise star (probably the best I've ever had). read more

We reserved two separate nights for our mini wedding celebrations, both times the restaurant failed us. The first wasn't so bad, but the waitress was smoking just outside the dining room in the back and so the entire room smelled like cigarette smoke the whole time. They often are out of ingredients here, this night they were out of limes for a margarita so made it with lemons. We ignored the small downfalls of that night and still kept our big reservation for 8 people the following week. When life gives you lemons.. We planned this ahead for our wedding dinner and called multiple times to confirm. We showed up and they suddenly had another party taking the dining room space and told us we could no longer have it. They offered to put us in the basement with our 90 year old grandmother who can't do stairs and a disabled family who also can't do stairs. They offered no other solutions and forced us to be seated in their bar area at 3 round tables. It was super unprofessional and quite frankly ruined the wedding dinner experience. We all spoke English instead of Polish so maybe that was the reason service was poor, but we are a Polish family. Additionally, we called them twice asking if we could bring a bottle of champagne and just pay a corkage fee. They agreed both times prior to arrival by phone and then once we arrived they said we couldn't have anything but their drinks. I'm extremely disappointed with this restaurant. They have the food quality, they just need the service quality to match. If they had better service they would be a 4-5 star restaurant based off the food. read more

Worst service I've ever encountered. Took 10 minutes to get a waitress after seated(it was not busy) 2 adults and 3 children BTW!! She took our drink orders with dinner and apps all at once She brought out the apps with 3of5 dinners at the same time.... After waiting 10 minutes for the 2 dinners not received I got up and asked her where the 2 pork dinners were. One for my 9 year old and one for myself. She went into the kitchen and the chef said something I could not hear. I went back to our table and she came back asking again what we ordered 5 minutes later I'm not sure if it's a language barrier or if she had more interest in the guy she was flirting with at the bar when I asked her about the missing dinners we ordered. Extremely disappointing experience at the Belvedere. Both when eating and after, unfortunately. No hostess so you seat yourself outside and apparently hope that someone notices. Our waitress was nice and seemed to be serving everyone that came in. The outside dining was nice. Shaded and music was playing. Very relaxing actually. The menu is nice. Lots of options. We went with a traditional lard dish as a starter. I have no idea what was special about it. I had a few bites and was unimpressed. Also, the plastic knife folded in half completely and was useful as we tried to cut through it. Imagine if we had tried it on meat? We had to eventually get slightly sturdier silverware (still plastic) from the waitress. For our meals, we went with the sampler and goulash. Oddly, the sampler (which was huge) came out quite a bit before the goulash. We dug in but that would have been awkward if it wasn't two people who were comfortable sharing a meal and one person had to wait. The presentation of the goulash was interesting - it was in the middle of a huge nest of potatoes. I didn't like the taste as it had a weird bitter spice to it. I thought the food was good from the sampler - potato pancake was way over cooked, hunter's stew tasted good, pierogies were just okay, sausage was good and the star for me was the stuffed cabbage. The inside looked very upscale so I was surprised about the cheap cutlery. The bathroom was nice, however, they had an empty bottle of soap. I think they should be on top of that, especially now and replace it. Unfortunately, I was very sick after eating there. It was the only place I had eaten and it was 100% their food (trust me you don't want more details than that, ugh). My partner was also sick but luckily for him it was just gas (nonstop gas...) and not sick like I was. I visited several rest stop bathrooms on the way home. So, their food must not be cooked very well. I thought the platter came out pretty fast and now realize it was yesterday's (or who knows when) food and probably heated up in a microwave. There are much better food options in Little Poland that won't make you sick so I'd give this place a pass and keep on walking. read more

First, just a good experience at the bar. Then, a superb dining experience as well. Overall, a solid, great find (in New Britain, where professional restaurants are few and far between). Stopped in here for a couple of beers before grocery shopping on Broad Street. We were so enticed by the menu I had to try the herring appetizer and found it to be absolutely superb. The home cured herring was bathed in superb, rich sour cream and garnished with the appropriate vegetables (scallions and red bell pepper). I was in Heaven, and could only have been more happy had the rolls included been heated up. On a second visit, "Hungarian Goulash," was stick-to-your-ribs, although missing the requisite dose of good smoked paprika. All that was there were small chunks of beef and lots of carrots in a very tasty brown gravy. The whole mess is served atop an enormous potato pancake. It may not be authentic, but it's one of the nicest versions of "meat and potatoes" we've had in recent memory. Other menu stand-outs are a $25 Filet Mignon with potato and vegetable, and not one but two fish offerings (salmon and 'whitefish') which are equally value-priced. It's remarkable how low the prices are for everything here, including the drinks. We fell in love with the place because of the friendly, eager service, and the professional details; tableware, decor, and appointments all combine for a great guest experience. And, hey, they have Keno at the bar. We played it here for the first time (didn't win, so don't look for any reviews from Dubai any time soon). This is a very European-style service. Our beers were at the appropriate 50°F for hopsy, rich beer, although best buddy would've preferred a domestic non-craft beer (not offered), and would've preferred it at a cooler serving temperature (not gonna happen here). Remarkable was we were served cloth napery and upscale cutlery and tableware, at lunch. The place is very handsome, with a number of interesting decorating details that we found very attractive. Someone really did their homework; the walls include interesting textures, the lighting is pleasant and unobtrusive. Even the bathrooms are decorated nicely, appointed nicely, and kept absolutely spotless. Downside: the limited beer selection and, for best buddy, regrettably high beer temperature. But that comes with the territory on Broad Street, as does the minimalist use of ice in mixed drinks. But the upside is that this is a professional restaurant. When I used to visit my Babci in Connecticut I would love eating Polish food, but when she passed I really had no opportunity to eat it anymore. My mom found this restaurant and when I went for Christmas we ate there. It was AMAZING! The ambience is nice, very homey. When we went it was quiet, there was only one other family there. Service was fantastic, food was delicious. I had the Polish Platter which I recommend if you want a little taste of everything: kielbasa, pierogies, placki ziemniaczane (potato pancake), and bigos (Hunter's Stew with chopped meat, sauerkraut, and cabbage). I am polish and have been eating polish food my whole life. This place is good authentic polish food. Really cool on the inside, nice bar. Conveniently located in little Poland. So I'm not Polish food expert, but I have eaten food at other places in Little Poland in New Britain and have eaten homemade Polish food made by people from Poland. This was disappointing. We went with some friends, including one from Poland. I figured we'd try somewhere new, but wish we would have gone elsewhere. The inside of Belvedere and the dishes are really nice, but the food taste did not match the presentation and decor. I had Borscht soup with a nalesniki, mushroom and cabbage pierogies, and others at the table had a sampler platter which had kielbasa, pierogies, and potato pancakes. Everyone but me also had a coffee after dinner that came with a little piece of yellow cake. The verdict: If it weren't for everyone loving their coffee and cake and the fact that the nalesnikis were delish and the Borscht was pretty good, we would have given this one star as all the main dishes were flavorless. Hate to say it, but the pierogies were the worst I think I've had. The filling was meh and the pan fried onions with them were barely sauteed- they were closer to raw and not the least bit caramelized like they should be. My Polish friend said she had never had kielbasa with that little flavor. So we won't be back unless it is for coffee and cake. There are many better options on Broad Street even if the decor isn't as fancy. I guess this place is better as a nightclub than a restaurant. read more

Great Polish food, can't figure out why this place doesn't have more stars. They have the best potato pancakes I have ever eaten. There are plenty of homemade dishes to choose from daily, including an array of amazing soups, homemade sauerkraut, and mouthwatering kielbasa all the way from Chicago. This place also has a great bar and the staff is incredibly friendly. Ask for the real Polish vodka. This is a must visit whenever you're in New Britski. read more

Went here for an late lunch with a girl friend. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very attentive. It was a little dirty when we sat down but she quickly cleaned it up apologizing as she did so. My friend and I both got different soups to start..both were delicious!! (Flaki and barszcz). We shared a zapiekanka as well and it was the length of an entire baguette loaded with toppings. The menu is priced within reason so no complaints there! I am a big fan of adding raspberry syrup to beers! If you like something a little sweeter you just try this! read more

Do not plan any events or family gatherings at Belvedere! A month before the wedding me and my fiance, reserved dining room for our rehearsal dinner with Ela for 35 people. She said this is not going to be a problem. Four days before we contacted her to verify if everything was ok, she told us she rented it out to somebody else for a wine tasting event. We were in shock. Ela told us that she can give us the the vip room in the basement that fits maybe 20 people max. We had no idea what to do. Rehearsal dinner was four days away and we had no venue. After calling all the places around, we were lucky Baltic restaurant had an open hall. I recommend not making any plans with Ela regarding renting a hall. She was untrustworthy and did not even apologize for what she did. Very unprofessional. Stay away! read more
