So, I recently purchased a new 9mm (Springfield XDM) and felt like getting out to fire some rounds through it. My brother in law was in town and we decided to head on out here this afternoon to check it out. We arrived, parked in the lot and then went into the little check in office. We paid our entrance ($7.00 per adult, valid all day!) fee and got some earplugs ($.50 cents). We told them that it was our first time here, so we were handed a pair of wireless headphones, and proceeded outside to watch a 7 minute safety video. It gave a brief description of the facility (It's the largest publicly funded shooting facility in the USA!), what to expect, and the rules and layout of the land. After the video was over, we took our receipt to the range masters station and we were assigned a lane (Lanes 1 & 2, all the way down to the left against the cinder block wall). We proceeded down to our lanes, and just as we arrived, they were having a cease fire period. Every 15 minutes, they have a cease fire. You unload your weapons, place them on the cement tables, and then step back behind the yellow line. Once everyone is done with that, someone comes around and checks your weapon to make sure its unloaded. Once all weapons are deemed "safe and clear", you can then go out onto the range and set your targets, check your shots etc. While this period is happening, you are not allowed to touch anything on the table. The only thing you can touch/be around during this time (near the cement benches where your weapons are) is the squeegee to clean up your shell casings. The safety aspect of this range is incredible! Their frames are really simple, yet really well thought out. They are basically billboard style frames with a cardboard back, with two 2x4s for legs. Out on the range, every 5 yards or so, they have holes in the ground where you put your frame. You then proceed to tape (Free masking tape provided at each frame station) your targets to the frame. Once everyone is done taping up their targets and off the range, they then announce when it is time to shoot. As far as the shooting........This was only the second time I had shot my guns (I also have a .38 Ruger revolver), and I still need lots of practice. The 9mm Springfield is really fun to shoot, and it has a 19 round magazine, so you can fire away for a decent period of time without having to reload! We both had a really great time shooting here today! They really take safety seriously (that is a damn good thing, IMO!) while not being overbearing and watching you like a hawk. It makes for a very comfortable shooting experience for both rookies like myself, as well as seasoned gun enthusiasts. I am coming back next week and will continue to come here over and over whenever I want to fire off some rounds! read more

If you like old, grumpy, retired, volunteer range masters on a power trip, this is your place!! Nothing better than having these snobby, pissy, elitist range masters hovering over you every 5 seconds. For the record, I did nothing wrong my whole time there. But that didn't stop them from standing behind me the whole time, overly inspecting by stuff at the end of a round, mean mugging me, etc. felt like I was dealing with TSA or something. Toward the end I asked if there was something wrong and he immediately went on the defensive and subtly threatened to kick me out. I guess it's my bad for questioning his authoritah. Maybe it's because of my age, or that my guns were black and not wood, or whatever. But it's just sad that these guys are potentially scaring off newbies instead of shepherding in the next generation. Guess I'll just drive 2 more minutes and go to the desert. I understand safety and such but there's no reason to get in someone's face and cuss them out and spit in your face over the first offense be it stupid or not. *US ARMY VET* Here's a list of things they complained about. Revolvers being in belt holsters, revolvers being in shoulder holsters, shoulder holsters, revolvers being loaded at a 45° angle pointed the direction of down range, firearms I'm not shooting being stored behind the pedestal. Then firearms I'm not shooting being stored at the shooting pedestal. Taking empty ammo magazines out of firearms cases behind the shooting pedestal. Standing around the shooting pedestal during Target changing time. The revolver cannot be fired with the cylinder open while feeding shells into the cylinder. Pointed down range at a 45° angle is commonly considered a low ready position and at any range I've been to is considered safe. They constantly looked for things to complain about in my opinion and to my recollection and none of their complaints were in the video. They're constant complaints drastically slowed my shooting time and they decided to feed all this information into my brain all at the same time using four different range instructors which made processing the information they are providing more difficult. These people to summarize are just uptight volunteers that love to whine and cry. They asked me if my AK-47 was fully automatic and then they began inspecting my firearms. I called before I arrived because of their horrible reputation and asked if there would be any issue with rapid shooting and I was told no. The guy on the phone sounded really cool and relaxed but when I arrived the opposite was the truth. They do not like to take yes for an answer and if you're telling them yes while you comply with one thing they will tell you three more things and they will continue to tell you the things while you're trying to comply with the first thing. Four of them will do it at the same time while they neglect other more unexperienced shooters. Constantly transporting my firearms back and forth from the shooting pedestal while being criticized by four men that neglect other shooters leads me to believe there are safety neglect issues at this range. There are eight range instructors doing the job of one range instructor at C2 tactical. In my opinion C2 tactical besides being air conditioning is a better shooting experience. read more

I have been to this range often and have nothing but good things to say. Each lane has plenty of space in between, with netting dividing each lane so you don't get hit with hot casings from your neighbors. Pay attention to the range officers, and be respectful. Dennis is the best! He volunteers and is a USMC combat vet. He gives lots of helpful tips on safety and spends time with you individually on the line when he is able to. They are redoing the parking lot and if you do not bring your extra small energy saving fuel efficient hybrid car you will not fit in there extremely poorly designed parking lot you cannot fit three pick up trucks and be able to open the doors in any of the new parking spots I've just spoken with four customers and they are all extremely disappointed on the engineering layout of the parking lot quite sad they were already small to begin with now they just made them smaller I love ben Avery been coming here for over 20 years do not drive your truck you will get door dings I have not spoken to one customer here that is happy about the extra small parking spots I can't believe no one actually has fix this problem very disappointing read more

This is a fantastic range located in northern Phoenix. The price to shoot is extremely affordable ($7!) and the location is very large and welcoming. The main public range features 67 tables and a 100yd maximum distance and allows FMJ and steel cased ammo so bring all the Wolf you can shoot!! The method of target attachment are essentially wooden frames with cardboard and masking tape for attachment, all of which is provided. You will have to purchase your own targets and if you happen to forget they are available at the main check in for purchase. To ensure you have a great range day PLEASE review the rules of the range, watch the 7 minute safety video they have on Youtube and understand the basic rules of firearm safety. My friends and I came out to the Desert Roses Program a few weeks ago and left wanting to come back for more! The program runs the first and third Thursday of every month. Our class was FULL, so I definitely recommend planning ahead and reserving your spot. None of my friends nor I had ever used a shotgun before. A few in our group had never even shot a gun before. But by the end of the night we felt comfortable with the shotguns and had all hit several clay rounds. The instructors begin with a safety lesson. Vitally important, especially for us newbies! They answered our questions, handed out safety glasses and ear plugs before walking us over to the range. We were each given a box of 15 rounds and took turns targeting 5 clays at a time. The instructors were patient and extremely helpful. They were also very encouraging and gave us helpful tips that made it much easier to hit the clay target. Honestly, I was a little apprehensive when we started the class, but was still enthusiastic. But the confidence of the instructors, their willingness to answer everyone's questions, their thorough safety instructions, and encouraging coaching on the range made me and my friends fans of this sport! We're planning to come back so save us some seats!!! If you're looking for something different to do with your friends, I highly recommend checking out this program. It only costs $5 and only takes a few hours of your time. It's a very memorable experience and one you'll enjoy! read more

I love this range! You're out in the desert shooting like you're really in the wild wild west -- hey you are! The whole system is extremely well organized and safe. When you get to the range, you have to check in and pay. I think it's like $7 per adult. If you've never been there before, they'll make you watch a short safety video, or you can watch it online beforehand. Then they assign you a lane. Load up your mags and get your stuff organized. They do breaks every 15 minutes. During the break, you clear out your weapons, leave them on the table and step back behind the yellow line. The range safety officers come by and check everyone's weapons to ensure everything is clear. Once they give the go-ahead, you can step out and set up your targets. Some lanes go back as far as 200 meters in the main area. Once all the targets are set up and everyone is back by their tables, they'll signal for everyone to put eye and ear protection back on (they're mandatory during all times of live fire). Then you can shoot until your heart's content until the next break. I find the range safety officers to be incredibly helpful. Yeah they bark out orders once in a while, but that's for everyone's safety. You're not supposed to touch anything on the tables during breaks, for example. Cell phone, empty mag, whatever. Don't touch it without permission. If your hand touches that table, you'll get a warning over the loudspeaker. I don't find it mean, it's just safety measures. I wouldn't want someone bumping and accidentally firing a weapon that was loaded while I was out changing targets. Bring cold drinks. It's outdoors, but the tables are covered so you're not out in the sun the whole time. They don't allow food out on the range. There is a food truck out in the parking lot though so you can go eat real quick. Saturdays get wicked busy. First come first serve and there is always a wait after opening. Well, this is a weird review to write. Up until this weekend, I had never even used a shotgun and now here I am the first to review the Ben Avery Shooting Range. Who knew? My husband recently acquired not one, but two guns - a shotgun and a pistol - much to my dismay. But, they were here to stay, so I decided to be proactive and learn how to use them. The shooting range is on the way to Pleasant, right off the Carefree Highway. I had passed by the place a hundred times on my way to the lake but had never stopped. There are 2 parts to the range, the target practice and the clay target area, a minute up the road. We first stopped at the target practice area where $5 will cover your daily shooter fee. This area is the more popular of the two and is VERY loud. Earplugs are necessary and noise canceling headphones couldn't hurt. We didn't end up staying at this area because we had come for clay shooting and I can't say I was disappointed to get out of there. $25 will get you a round of 100 sporting clays. Each platform has two sporting clay machines that either shoot them high, low or doubles. At first I was apprehensive, but by the end I was loading the gun and actually enjoying myself. I ended up shooting 2 out of 10 sporting clays and I have to say I was pretty proud of myself at 20% for my first time. Sunblock, earplugs and water are necessary - lots of water, it is in the middle of the desert and the sun is a killer. The staff is friendly and helpful; one employee even stopped by our area and offered us water. I can't say this is a new hobby of mine, but I'll be back every now and then to freshen up and practice. read more

I didn't know you need a reservation to shoot, so I show up, the check in guy says they are all filled up for today and the whole weekend. I look around theres like 5 people shooting. I told him there's like 25 empty slots. He said yeah we have a lot of "no shows" and you cant take their place..really?? What kind of idiotic reservation system is this?
