Just for an eye exam!!! Equipment broke down during lst visit. Had to return for a 2nd visit to get refraction test. The technology for this test was down. Techs are rushed and unfriendly. Office and docs are misinformed on what insurance covers what tests. I was erroneously billed for the refraction test. It has taken weeks for front desk to resolve. They don't get back to me when I reach out. When I AM able to speak to them, all I get is diatribes and requests for me to actually come into the office to get a simple refund processed. This is so unprofessional and totally unacceptable.

I paid in total $224 and the frame was ruined - see photo attached, with both sides of the frame being distinctively not round in shape. Just in case, I have another pair to compare with, so I am confident in saying that the frame was damaged by those who put the glasses in it. I opted to get my eyes dilated since I didn't want to pay extra and then afterwards they tell me due to my high prescription (I'm -7.00 in both eyes) I need to get the $39 retinal scan anyways. She told me due to my high prescription, it's best to have retinal pictures that you can take with you to your next doctor for continuity of care, and I never even got the pictures.

When I called and asked why they sent me the medical bill versus charging vision insurance office front desk was extremely arrogant and not once had forwarded me to the Billing person. I told them this was an inaccurate billing. I had asked them repeatedly to submit appropriately under vision insurance, which they had never followed through on. Never got a clarification on why they failed to bill my vision insurance under which my eye exam was covered BUT to this day doc insist I pay them directly $569 as they billed exam through my medical insurance with high out of pocket deductible.

SUMMARY: (1) Wasn't given the doctor I asked to see. (2) Did a lazy MACHINE test instead of the more accurate manual vision test. (3) The prescription turned out to be very off. (4) It took 7 calls over many weeks before someone who could address my concern called me back. (5) Refused to refund me the measly $150 when I requested it, but my credit card company stopped payment and I got my refund the hard way. THE STORY: I called the office to make an appointment with Dr. Spitzer because a good friend of mine recommended him to me. I made it clear that I wanted to see Dr. Spitzer. But when I showed up for the appointment and said "Hello Dr. Spitzer" when he walked in, he said, "I'm Dr. Cohen." I explained that I came to that office specifically to see Dr. Spitzer. He offered to reschedule, but at this point it was awkward and I felt bad rejecting this guy. So I said, no, it's fine. Dr. Cohen's assistant tested my vision (refraction test) using a machine. The doctor never did a manual test (you know, where they flip back and forth between different lenses and you say "one" or "two"). This bothered me. I wondered if this was the new standard. He wouldn't write me a monovision prescription when I asked for it even though all my prior ophthalmologist did so, and who, in fact, recommended it for me. So all of the above made me have doubts. I didn't want to spend money on expensive lenses with the wrong prescription. I called a few optometrists with high Yelp ratings, and ALL confirmed that they do MANUAL refraction tests, that the machine is simply used to measure a starting point. In addition, they said that of course they would write me a monovision prescription. I went to one and low-and-behold, the prescription I was given was VERY different from what Dr. Cohen prescribed (not counting the mono-vision difference). Naturally I got my new glasses with the better, manually measured prescription. I called New York Laser Eye LLP to get a refund explaining all of the above. I was told a billing person would call me back. No one did, and it took 6 more calls to finally get a call back. In the meantime, I called VISA to dispute the charges since my deadline to do so would pass otherwise. When I finally got the callback, she put me on hold to talk to Dr. Spitzer, who denied his office failed at all, and that it was standard procedure to only do a machine vision test. He refused to refund me the measly $150, even after I explained to him I paid for another eye test and used that one for my glasses. Any good high-profit business would never make a fuss over $150. $150 matters to me because I'm on a tight budget.

When we both agreed my cataracts had gotten to the point that I really couldn't see well enough to drive at night and it was time for surgery, Dr. Spitzer referred me to Dr. Raviv who explained the current options available for my type of vision. I had astigmatism as a large component of my poor vision, along with near sightedness and cataracts. I opted for the toric lens. I had the surgery at NY Eye & Ear where the staff was highly competent and the procedure went well. Using local anesthesia enables you to recover quickly without the after effects of general anesthesia like nausea and grogginess. The anesthesiologist was congenial & added a sense of humor, so important when you are on an operating table! Everyone was kind and respectful. At my follow up visit I HAD 20/20 VISION IN THE EYE THAT WAS OPERATED ON!! I will be going in for my other eye in about a week... I can see without glasses for the first time in 50 years! I will need an over the counter pair of reading glasses for close reading but am glasses free for most of my day. I am so amazed!!! Thank you, Drs. Raviv and Spitzer!

I waited 30 minutes and was told they didn't know I was "ready" when I was told to take a seat, that didn't make sense. The Dr is nice and takes her time and did a great job but the optician Rose rushes you a bit and was too busy to answer all my standard questions. They also tried to sell me some over priced products I saw at CVS for half the cost that I didn't really need and suggested I get an additional test through my health insurance not covered by my eye insurance and they want you to rebook a return for follow up. All standard stuff. Some of the front desk girls are horrible and there seems to be miscommunication between the tech staff and them. I asked the desk for a form the optician told me to get from the front and the girl at the front said "that's between her and you"...strange answer. I feel like a little bit of cordial behavior at the front plus a stronger communication between the staff could go a long way. There are a lot of choices in NYC and it's really sad when you give your business to people and you have a less than stellar experience. We all work hard and should be able to at least have a decent experience in healthcare. It's a convenient location. Also clean office with a pretty view. They have good selection of glasses.
