I just wanted to add that 2nd eye was done and i am very happy. Ok eyes not perfect but every doctor i have seen has said that my RK was very very agressive (done back in 1993). This caused complications .. but my eyesight while not perfect is as good as it was when i was wearing glasses. His staff was wonderful as was the surgical center (both the facility and staff). Associate Ophthalmologists sneaky exam practices and thus billing inappropriateness are terrible practices. Came for a simple eye exam, low power glasses, I had vision insurance that covered it and this office and doc were in the network. Got bill in mail for $ 569. When I called and asked why they sent me the medical bill versus charging vision insurance office front desk was extremely arrogant and not once had forwarded me to the Billing person. I told them this was an inaccurate billing. I had asked them repeatedly to submit appropriately under vision insurance, which they had never followed through on. Never got a clarification on why they failed to bill my vision insurance under which my eye exam was covered BUT to this day doc insist I pay them directly $569 as they billed exam through my medical insurance with high out of pocket deductible. read more

If I had the foresight to know what awaited me in this so-called "establishment," I would have spared myself the agony of darkening their doorstep. Alas, I was blinded by their promises of professionalism, only to be met with a spectacle of ineptitude that no lens could correct. From the moment I arrived, it was abundantly clear that patient care is an afterthought. The receptionist, who must have studied under the tutelage of automatons, barely managed to look up from her screen as I checked in--her disinterest palpable, her efficiency nonexistent. I waited. And waited. When I inquired about the delay, I was met with a dismissive wave, as if my time were a trivial matter in the grand scheme of their disarray. Finally, I was ushered into an exam room--though "ushered" suggests a level of grace and attentiveness this clinic is sorely lacking. The technician appeared to be more concerned with the clock than with conducting a thorough examination. I was subjected to a rushed battery of tests, none of which inspired confidence. When the ophthalmologist finally appeared, I was treated to a five-minute consultation that could best be described as perfunctory. There was no engagement, no interest in my concerns, just a hollow recitation of textbook diagnoses followed by a swift exit. If I wanted to be spoken to as though I were an inconvenience, I would have called a cable company. But perhaps the crowning achievement of their negligence was the follow-up--or rather, the lack thereof. I was promised results, yet I might as well have sent my inquiries into the void. Calls were ignored, messages unreturned. It was as if the moment I stepped out of their office, I ceased to exist. For a practice that claims to specialize in vision, they certainly failed to see the importance of basic human decency. In conclusion, if you are considering entrusting your vision to Associate Ophthalmologists, I implore you to think twice. This clinic operates with all the precision of a blindfolded darts player. Spare yourself the frustration and seek care from professionals who understand that treating patients is more than just a business transaction--something this clinic clearly has yet to grasp. I did PRK with Dr. Rudick and my eyesight has changed from minus nine to 20/20 now (In the month)! I want to share my experience with you, hope it would be helpful to you if you are considering doing PRK/LASIK as well! How I found the doctor: I went to the Zocdoc and booked an appointment for a regular eye check with Dr. Wallis(Optometrist) - he referred me to Dr. Rudick after hearing I wanted to consult the LASIK. They are working at the same office and both are super nice! : Office experience: after you check in with the front desk, then someone will come to call your name in 5-10 minutes ( I haven't met any long-time wait issues, they move fast!) Pre-surgery consultation: I met Dr. Rudick and he did a thorough eye check for me. Then he highly recommended I do PRK due to my near sight being pretty high and may have a dry eye (I did the research- LASIK has a risk of making your eye drier after the surgery) How I decided to do PRK: After conducting my research, I decided to do PRK which is safer. The recovery is a little bit longer and more painful than LASIK but I would say it deserved! Why I chose Dr. Rudick: 1. I did my research online, he has more than 25 years of experience in doing the PRK/LASIK (Experience) 2. You can see him in the consultation process. (Build the trust) - That's a plus cuz I do know in some places, you will only see the doctor the day when you do the surgery 3. He has a good attitude and patience to answer all of your qs. (Care about the patience) 4. He has an amazing team! (Teamwork makes the dream work) - All of his team members that I met are super nice! They care about me, encourage me (cuz I'm kinda nervous at the beginning after knowing I'm minus 9), sharing their own experience with me(some of his team members did the PRK/LASIK by him as well). Also, in my research stage, I saw some old comments/opinions about his assistant Carmen. I wanna say she's a very nice person. The surgery and recovery: the surgery is around 20 minutes and you can see more clearly right after it. Then you just go back home to sleep and relax! He and his surgery team are very professional and make you feel comfortable without that much nervousness (you are a human being so at least will have some haha) during the procedure. I had my surgery on Wednesday and then I'm able to back to work on the following Monday. From Thursday - Sunday, I just stay at home, close my eyes, listen to podcasts, and sleep as much as I can. After surgery: you will come to the office to check the 2nd day after surgery, one week later, four weeks later, 3month later (I'm only on that step so not sure about future follow-up check time) Above is my whole experience of doing the PRK with Dr. Rudick. I give him a 10/10. Before when I searched online and saw he had so many good reviews, I was just like you, a little incredulous - why he is getting so many good reviews? I've been seeing Dr Tan for a few years and she's the only reason I come here. She's super helpful and thorough and has great bedside manner. That said, the office is a terrible experience. I've always arrived 10-15 min before my appts and typically have to wait at least 30 min in the waiting room, then another 10-15 min once I'm in the exam room. The nursing staff is rude and acts like you're a major inconvenience, and the front desk gets annoyed when you ask whether or not you'll be seen soon. Once the doctor comes in, the appointments usually take 10-15 minutes. It frustrating to spend nearly an hour waiting for what I know will be a very quick appointment. Time of day seems to make no difference - I'm not sure what is going on that they're constantly running 30-45 min behind but I wish they could figure out way to run more efficiently. read more

Very disappointed with this place. I payed my fee when I came for an appointment but after a year they sent me a surprise bill. When I spoke to the billing person they could not explain why and reduce the bill but I still had to pay extra. Very unprofessional. Additionally, the prescription they gave me literally didnt work. I went to two glass shops and both made glasses based on that prescription that didnt work. I had to redo it. Very disappointing. I was excited to go there initially. read more

I love Dr Wallis, and have been with him for 10+ years but the staff now is absolutely terrible - rude & disrespectful. I have requested for my contact lenses RX, called on thursday. Someone rude picked up who wouldn't even let me talk...was abrupt and said I'll talk to the doc and send it by the evening. I got nothing. I emailed them for 4 continuous days, giving them time as maybe this requires a little time. I called again Tuesday, and met with the same or different rude person - who wouldn't even let me explain what the issue is - she (name - Karina) just says "I heard you, can I speak!" in the rudest tone (and was impatient and just mean) and I told her I am trying to explain something to you, could you please let me finish. Extremely rude and unhelpful. They definitely need to change their staff or this person, terrible experience to get something so simple. read more

Dr. Rudick performed my PRK surgery. My results speak for themselves. I'm 20/15 now after wearing contact lenses for over 15 years and having a prescription of around -3.25. Dr. Rudick is fairly laid back, which makes the procedure feel "routine", which is a good thing. I decided on PRK after researching the differences between the two procedures. Rudick said that my corneas were suitable for either procedure, but said that my concerns made sense regarding potential side effects and cosigned my decision. I scheduled my actual procedure the day after the consultation and they were able to accommodate me. The procedure itself took around 5-10 minutes. Aftercare is straight forward and he does give you his number in case you need to text questions on the weekend, which I did a couple of times. It's been a month and my vision has stabilized, post-op checkups have been hassle free. The only constructive feedback I have is the wait times are consistently 30 min past the appointment or so. I think this is acceptable since Rudick does not rush patients, but that is my only complaint. Just plan accordingly. All in all, I would 100% recommend Rudick and his team to anyone looking to achieve perfect vision and pretty much change their life. read more

Not sure why there are bad reviews on here. I really like this office. It's clean, spacious (which is great during Covid), and the staff is really helpful and nice. Dr. Wallis is very knowledgeable and I like him a lot. I wanted to try color contacts and the staff very helpfully ordered me trial pairs to try on in office ahead of my appointment. I didn't have to wait long for my appointment and everything was seamless and professional. I used to go to the 40th street location and didn't realize they had an office in my own neighborhood in FiDi. I wore ortho-K contact lenses for over a decade and didn't know if I would be eligible for laser eye correction or what the process would be like. Absolutely love Dr. Rudick and the entire staff at Associate Ophthalmologists. I've been going to Dr. Rudick for over a decade ever since I badly scratched my cornea and another, not so great doctor and practice were of little help. Most recently I was asking Dr. Rudick about what seemed to be allergy related or chronic dry eye and he suggested trying collagen punctal (tear duct) plugs. He has them himself, and told me that they prevent the lower duct from draining which helps with Dry-Eye. They've made all the difference in the world these past 3 months! I first had them implanted back in August right as Ragweed season was starting up. Usually August into September is brutal for my poor eyes. This year? Not a single instance of dry or inflamed eyes. The plugs helped keep my eyes from drying out and allowed me to just about forget about ragweed season for a change. The collagen kind dissolve in about 3 months and need to be replaced, and I'm willing to deal with 30 seconds of discomfort every quarter for the benefits I get. read more

I used to go to Dr. Rudick and I had been happy. However, my last experience in 2018 was very disappointing and I lost more than $250 due to the wrong prescription he gave me. He checked my eyes and to my surprise, he told me my vision got better and gave me a new prescription. I took the new prescription to the shop inside their clinic right away. While the optometrist was placing my order and reading my prescription out loud I noticed the prescription was wrong saying my eyesight had worsened significantly (my eye was dilated so I could not see the paper properly). I told the guy to place a hold on my order till I figure it out. Of course, I checked with the receptionist right away but Dr. Rudick had already left. I called the next day and next week but could not get a hold of the Doctor. I called to tell the shop that I have not been successful in resolving the issue and they should continue with the hold on my order or refund it. A lady picked up and told me my lenses have been already ordered and are in the shop. I asked what happens if I do not want them cause they are not correct and she said they refund me as long as I do not pick them up. A month later, after several unsuccessful attempts to talk to Dr. Rudick, I called the shop to ask for a refund. This time the same guy who ordered the lenses in the first place picked up and he denied that I had asked him to put a hold on the order and refused to accept that their shop's receptionist had instructed me over the call that unpicked lenses can be refunded at any point. He simply said he could not put a hold with the reasoning that I had already paid for them so they had to order the lenses, and that their return policy is 14 days and my lenses cannot be refunded/returned now. Neither he nor the woman informed me about any order or return policy. So I lost $200 I paid for lenses which were practically useless for me, and were never picked up. Later on, I had to go to another optometrist to check my eye to make sure what is going on, for which I had to pay out of pocket since the insurance only covers eye exams every 2 years. And guess what, the new prescription was the same as my old one with no change! I lost my money, time, and trust in Dr. Rudick, his practice, and the shop partnering with the clinic. read more

AO was OK, but there is definitely better out there (Revolution Eyes!). I went last year for my annual eye exam with an appointment made for noon and wasn't seen until about 1:15. Dr. Talbi was nice, but quick and didn't really go into detail about my vision/answer my questions. I inquired about contacts but she told me my eyesight wasn't bad enough (?) except I almost always needed to put my glasses on to see and I wanted to learn about contacts. Anyway, I ordered glasses there and didn't get them until about three weeks later. I learned from my current doctor (Dr. Lee @ Revolution Eyes) that my prescription actually shows that I have some astigmatism and Dr. Talbi NEVER mentioned it to me. I went for my appointment this year and it wasn't until I was sitting in their waiting room that they told me they no longer accept my insurance. The receptionist was very nice but it was also very frustrating to find out the last minute. read more

So rude and unprofessional. I have been coming here for four years and the service has really gone downhill. After keeping me waiting for 30 minutes past my appointment time, they informed they wouldn't have time to dilate my eyes and I would have to come back, which is part of the exam which I paid for . Excuse me? In my haste to make it back to work (because not everyone has the time to be jerked around all afternoon), I left my credit card at the desk. Nobody called me to confirm it was there and I had to figure out a week later it was still there. At 1st I was nervous about doing it but realize shortly after I was in really good hands. I visited this office late last year for a consult for LASIK and received the LASIK surgery from Dr. Rudick soon thereafter. My experience in this office has been on the whole positive; the receptionists and assisting staff are all polite and helpful and the doctor was very informative throughout the entire process. He provided me statistical information on the side affects of LASIK, both generally and his own statistics and made sure there was time for me to ask questions. I felt informed and cared for throughout the whole process. The LASIK surgery was performed at another location where it is appropriate to perform said surgery. The doctor and his assistant were also very supportive during the surgery, walking me through what would be done and talking me through the more uncomfortable parts. All this said, everyone's results for LASIK are different and I would not want my review to be perceived as an indicator that your surgery will go off without a hitch. My results are very favorable, I have 20/15 in one eye and allegedly 20/20 in the other eye. I feel that my left eye is a little bit blurry but I also think that this is now in comparison to the right which is better than "perfect" vision. Additionally, I can say that in the 2+ months since the surgery I do feel like it has continually improved to align more with the vision of the right eye. Your results may be different; it depends on your body and some things cannot be predicted. But it was definitely worth the expense and very minimal risk for me. Good luck! read more

Regarding the customer service. I had Mary help me on my visit today. I've had some out of the ordinary eye pain for the past couple of days (I've had the feeling before, but with reason like leaving in contacts, and it's always gone away quickly). I figured I'd have it looked at. In past experiences with other offices, I've received unexpected bills after my visits with no explanation or warning during the appointment. I expressed to Mary when filling out forms that if I didn't need the $50 refraction test (not sure if that's the correct word) I'd opt out for financial reasons, but if necessary I could swing it. She was understanding. She took a careful look at my insurance and told me that with my deductible, if I am to need additional exams (which seemed possible due to my reason for visiting) it could come out to $XXX. I apologized for wasting her time because unfortunately I would not have the money to be paid upon visiting. I am so happy that she took the time to detail my insurance, deductible, and possible costs BEFORE my exam. I have had situations where you come out and are blindsided. This 5 star review is for Mary. Thank you for your help, understanding and explanation today. I'll be back when I need an ordinary eye exam, contacts or glasses. read more

Dr. Rudick is absolutely incredible. He performed LASIK to correct my myopia and he was extremely thorough in explaining all of the steps and what was expected during the procedure. He is exceptionally skilled. During the procedure he explained each step he did while he did it and it was all painless. I didn't feel anything! I've been seeing Dr. Rudick for the past several years now and I have always had a great experience. I have also recommended him to several coworkers. A few years ago, I was experiencing sharp pains in my eyes and was having increased light sensitivity so I went on a hunt for an ophthalmologist. I stumbled upon Dr. Rudick who was by my work office. He said I had extremely dry eyes and started utilizing these dissolvable plugs into my tear ducts. It was noninvasive, quick, and you do not feel a thing! Best thing ever, and they have made a massive difference and no more sharp pains. I would highly recommend the plug for those who are experiencing dry eyes and would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Rudick. I was referred to AO from another doctor. Prior to scheduling my initial appointment, I was warned about the receptionist not being the most pleasant person. Also, I wasn't fond of the unprofessional behavior of ophthalmic staff he had when I first started coming to the practice. But, during my last couple of visits I've noticed some changes. The doctors were very thorough, rather abrupt (I was asked to not ask questions until he had finished talking, and was informed he didn't need new patients) but in the end did the job. The class-act however are the front desk staff, who are so rude, so dismissive, so non customer focused, that if I was in charge of the operation I would be doing some in depth staff retraining. I have difficult eyes - itchy, scratchy, watery, dry, a high prescription and of course, astigmatism. Dr. Talbi was able to help me find a great contact lense that with some trial and error and a prescription adjustment, I can finally feel comfortable wearing for more than an hour before I want to tear my own eyes out. She set me up with a couple of different brands as trials in my hard-to-fit prescription. Once I found the one I liked for comfort, she updated my prescription as the astigmatism needed to be adjusted to work with the brand I went with. I'm so happy I gave this place a shot. I had previously seen a couple of other eye doctors at other practices and never got the high level of attention that I felt Dr. Talbi and AO were happy to provide. With my old eye doctor's, I also never got a great fitting contact that was also comfortable. I'm happy I switched and started coming to AO and Dr. Talbi. I'm very thankful to her that after a few years, I'm finally able to wear contacts again. Like any doctor's office that I've literally ever been to (eye doctor, gynecologist, general physician), there's a bit of a wait to get in past appointment time but honestly, never longer than 15-20 minutes beyond which I don't mind because like I said, this is typical of ALL doctor's I've ever been to. Not to mention, I'm so happy with the results that the longer wait times aren't really a big deal to me. read more

STAY AWAY! From both Dr. Ruddick and his glasses dispensary. What a nightmare. Both my teenage son and I went to see Dr. Ruddick. He was off schedule making us wait at least 40 min for the appointment, he was dismissive, and rushed. He didn't ask any history for my son, of which there was plenty and seemed angry that he couldn't see very well out of one eye...hence the history. As for me, I ended up back in his chair as the first prescription didn't seem quite right. Again, rushed and dismissive as if I didn't read the chart correctly the first time. After reading some reviews perhaps it's Lasik that Dr. Ruddick needs to stick with as seeing regular patients is not his strong suit. As for the dispensary. STAY AWAY. But if you must, make sure you get there before she's got to make her evening train! Nothing like customer service. Besides, the progressive lenses were not cut straight, which is a big problem for progressives. Also, she has no idea how to adjust the glasses properly for a good fit. I have been to quite a few eye doctors over the years (I've worn glasses since kindergarten) and I can honestly say that AO is the best I have ever been to. When my glaucoma became problematic my former eye doctor recommended AO (and Dr. Shepps specifically) saying, "He's the best in New York City." And he was right. Now, my glaucoma is under control, and Dr. Shepps also performed a flawless cataract surgery on me. I have seen two other associates at AO at times and also received first-class treatment. The front desk staff are friendly and very efficient, as are the Ophthalmic Medical Assistants. The office is big and bright and shiny and spotlessly clean with all the latest equipment. This review is being written in regards to LASIK surgery with Dr. Rudick; Being a physician myself, I'm admittedly pretty hard to please when visiting other doctors offices. Let me just say, this place does everything right. The ancillary staff is amazing. Everybody is courteous and willing to explain with a friendly smile. Appointment times are promptly kept, and scheduling is a breeze. As far as the surgery goes, I would recommend Dr Rudick to my own family (and actually did). My recovery time was less than a day, probably about eight hours to be precise. By the follow-up visit the day after surgery I was pain-free I can see perfectly! I really dislike going to see doctors. It generally involves having to book an appointment months in advance, dealing with rude and incompetent receptionists, waiting an hour or more, and then finally getting to see the doctor for 15 minutes where they hurry through the exam and give me a stack of prescriptions before I leave. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the level of care I received at Associate Ophthalmologists. To give you some background...some dust had fallen into my eye and I had attempted to flush everything out with water. But when it was still pink after a day and it still felt like something was in my eye, I decided it was time to get it checked out. I went to Associate Ophthalmologists without an appointment and was able to see Dr. Gerald Shepps after waiting less than 30 minutes. The front staff was efficient and courteous. Dr. Shepps is extremely knowledgeable and competent. He explained clearly what the problem was and kept me informed as to what he was doing throughout the procedure. He adeptly removed a shard of metal from my eye with nearly no pain or discomfort. The entire visit took about an hour. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
