However, I called today just to inquire about average cost for a shine & potential turn around. I recently went for a vacation in PA and visited Benjamin's On the Row because my Birkenstock needed to be re-soled. I had the best customer service experience ever. They were very friendly and sympathetic towards my need as I am new in town. They walked me through the procedure and process and had my Birkenstock re-sole at record time before I had to head back to my home state. The craftsmanship was amazing and my Birkenstock is as good as new! I could tell that a lot of work and experience went into making my footwear. My father has friends who were a professional shoe-maker and I learned a lot from them when I was young, so I am very wary about the nitty-gritty details of repairing shoes. Also, I had a lot of my shoes restored before, but I never had my shoes restored to such high-level of craftsmanship (it is exactly like factory made!). Aimee has such high integrity and so helpful! I took my suede shoes there to get cleaned, worrying that they might be looking too dirty, and Aimee assured me that they looked great as it is and that I didn't need to get anything done. It is so rare to find a repair person telling you that the item is fine as it is and that I thus don't need to get anything repaired and thus don't need to pay them anything (since they're not doing anything). I don't usually write reviews unless the place is terrible or it is exceptional. This place is the latter. Seriously, I'm floored by their customer service. The woman at the front, Amy, is the best. Besides offering candy everytime you stop by, she's easy to talk to and super friendly. She explains everything they're doing in detail and we ended up talking about music for a while just because she's fun to talk to. I ended up coming here because another shop near my work did a sloppy job fixing the sole of some Frye leather chukkas I had. As for the work? They take care of your shoes and want to make sure that the job is done right. I kept bringing a pair back because something just didn't feel right but Jimmy was patient and kind enough to look at it everytime. In the end, it turns out that the machine used was too strong for my clarks and the issue was resolved nicely. Most places would've told me to take a hike but they were nice enough to make sure it the job was properly finished and to top it off, Jimmy toss me some money back because it took so long to buy myself lunch. I told him that was unnecessary but he insisted. Where do you even see that in any other store? Can't recommend enough. read more

Fast, efficient, friendly, knowledgable, caring, professional, (I could go on) - are some of the words to describe the service when I took two pair of dress shoes in for repair. I wish I could call out the people by name but I don't have their names (my fault). I dropped off my shoes two weeks ago. They called this week to say they were ready. I picked them up today and they look amazing - better than new. The new soles are flawless. They even caught and issued and repaired it without question. Their customer service is absolutely amazing. I had originally sent my boyfriend in to drop my shoes off for some lifts as I was on the other side of the country, they had given me a call and insisted I come in myself as they wanted to be sure they did exactly what I needed. I thought that was going to be an issue as I was leaving the country just days after, but they insisted that they would be able to get my shoes back to me in time - and they did! Their turnaround time was amazing, and my shoes looked great. They are so incredibly friendly, and threw in some insoles as well as I had mentioned that I would be walking a lot for my trip. The price is a bit high and they do not take insurance (cash only), but let me assure you, it is 100% worth it. Their amazing service and fantastic work will have me coming back with my next pair of shoes for sure! read more

Would give 0 stars if i could. I got this place recommended (highly) and I live close by so I really wanted to love them. I dont know what other people mention about art but what I can report on 8 different pairs (which I all brought in at once - my fault) was extremely poor craftsmanship. Do absolutely NOT bring any high end shoes there! They will be ruined. In addition it took 8 weeks (I was quoted 2 weeks) and I received a progressively worsening attitude. Here a quick rundown: My christian loubuotin Mary janes (elastic strip needed replacement- they cut into the leather ordered the wrong strip and in addition to I showing everything dangles), The prada flats (instead of just touch up on the color, new sole and having the metal logo back attached - they tightened them somehow but truly in weird places, the shoe does not fit properly anymore and the color touch up was never performed and the metal logo not reattached. The metal logo actually fell off in the bag while bringing them home. My husband fixed this with gorilla glue - 15 minutes) The Chanel leather limited edition espadrille (while doing a simple sole reinforcement they ripped into the rope and,then they splashed black paint on the shiny pearl portion of the leather...) I trusted their 2 weeks max quote and thought "they have good reviews, I can trust their work hence no need to bring for example my chanel espadrille back to the chanel store and wait 6 weeks, it is fine if I loose the warranty.. "Well wrong gamble. A pair of satin Manolo blahnik for simple black coloring (the color is uneven and the satin shoe is hard as a rock now, my husband could have done a better job with a sharpie) A pair of Tori Burch for resole and tightening, (not tightened and resolve on front got glued on terribly). Jimmy Choo high heel for resolve, terrible glue on job and half the glitter gone and messed up. I could go on and on. Now service: great when you drop off as you pay upfront in cash. (a lot in my case) and terrible after you left your money and return for pick up. Timing: either they flat out lie to customers or they are so way overwhelmed, backlogged and disorganzied that they just randomly say "2 weeks". It took 8 weeks in total. I do have the conveninece of living close by so I went there every week for 2 months. After 1 month I started getting nervous and almost cried (sorry this might sound superficial but i left about 7k worth of shoes there and each one was a piece that I got myself as a celebration - passed board exams, birthday etc) so I decided just get them back before they get totally f up as it seems high end items are way over their head. So I requested to have my shoes back (not my money, again at this point I just wanted to get out if this situation and have my belongings back) and the answer was -they wont give them out when they started working on them (which they didn't as I saw my loubuotin hanging nicely over the partition almost like a show piece). In summary my fault that I blindly trusted reviews and word of mouth recommendation and dropped 8 pairs off at once...just to find out that service and craftsmanship are terrible. (Now some of my shoes are completely ruined). Dont trust the quoted time frame either please- it will be longer and you will get poor service and work. Conclusion: please please stay away if you have any high end shoes. Actually run the other way. And if you have any recommendation for a good cobbler who knows what he/she js doing and doesn't treat customers like a nusiance please feel free to reply to this post. I have an old pair of Pedwin longboats from the 1950s. The insole had dry rotted and was brittle, stiff and petrified from lack of use. I took the shoes to Benjamin's after reading reviews of several shoe repair places in CC philadelphia. Based upon the reviews I gave Bens a try. The choice was an excellent one. From the moment I walked into the shop, the service and friendliness of all of the staff was extraordinary. They evaluated my shoes, let me know the problems and how to solve them, and how much it would cost (so I could bring the the cash - Cash Only). We reminisced about the quality of shoes in days gone by and then dabbled in the provocative and endless debate of refurbishing old shoes vs buying new glued shoes and disposing of them once they are worn. Naturally, since I was dropping off a 55 year old pair of shoes, it was clear which side of the debate I was entrenched. Since shoe repair is a cornerstone of their business, its easy to see their view as well. They repair all things leather and suede, so bring it in and have a chat. The shoes were done just a few days later, and I eagerly went back to see how they turned out. Well they are excellent. Like new. They accessed their inventory of vintage "old new stock" heels to replace the worn heels on my Pedwins. They used a supple leather for the insole. They saved the logo emblem from the original insole so that I could choose to put it into the new insole or toss it. In short, I have a lot of confidence in these folks. I have several other pair of vintage shoes that need restoration, and I wont hesitate to bring them here. read more

I had a VERY different experience here! Summary: - Rude (the politeness is a front) - Expensive and incompetent - Random hours Details: I brought a pair of expensive Birkenstock shoes (not sandals) here for re-soling since they are listed as an authorized Birkenstock repair center. They quoted an expensive price (half the cost of the shoes) and a long wait time (3 weeks), but I figured, hey, authorized repair center. I was nervous when the cobbler acted like he'd never seen anything like these shoes before, but I handed them over anyway. Well, it took 5 weeks, not 3, but I was prepared to overlook that. And up to this point, they were just as polite as could be. This would change soon. The problem started when I got them home and discovered that they had mysteriously shrunk two sizes--seriously, I could not even get my foot in. I called and explained my problem, and the woman said, No problem, bring 'em in and we'll stretch them (stretch? Why would new soles entail stretching the uppers??). So I agreed, and arranged to bring them by on Monday (this was on a Friday). When I arrived at midday on Monday, there was a hand-written sign on the door saying they were closed. However, I could see that they were inside, so I called and said, "Hi, I'm the guy you spoke to on Friday, can I drop the shoes off?" What followed was bizarre in the extreme. "No, we're closed." "OK, but I'm right outside the door." "I know, I'm looking at you." "So, I arranged to drop these shoes off...?" "We're closed. Come back tomorrow." "But the website says you're open Monday." "We're not responsible for what the website says." "But you said to drop them off Monday!" "No I didn't. We're closed." "But I just want to drop them off!" "We don't want to be interrupted." And so on. Eventually she relented and unlocked the door, but spent the entire time telling me how selfish and thoughtless I was to want to drop off the shoes IN THE MIDDLE OF A WORKDAY. Absolutely surreal. Plus the time she spent giving me attitude was a WAY longer interruption than if she had just taken the damned shoes when I called. So then they start their stretching process, and, guess what, it doesn't help. So they say come back and we'll do some more. Each time they're absolutely stone-faced, looking at me like I'm some loathsome thing their dog coughed up on the rug. The politeness is long gone. This goes on for an additional three visits (each visit was a 40-minute round trip for me). FInally, I said this is the last time. I arranged to pick them up the following Monday, and specifically confirmed that they would be open. So Monday I roll up around 11 AM, and...you guessed it...they're CLOSED! But wait, there's more! When I finally manage to find them open, I walk in, and she tells me that the problem wasn't stretch-related at all--the cobbler had put in some extra padding under the foot pad, which is what was making it too tight!! So the 4 trips for repeated stretching were a waste of time!! This, incidentally, was uttered without a trace of remorse or embarrassment, and no suggestions that this might in any way be their fault. So I'm forced to conclude that they're either incompetent (because they couldn't connect the extra padding with the extreme tightness), or else they were deliberately messing with me, making me come back time and again to punish me for daring to challenge the poor quality of the original job. Conclusion: STAY AWAY!!! There are plenty of competent shoemakers who won't put you through this emotional abuse. read more

I (very nervously) took my brand new pair of pull-on Frye riding boots here to have them stretched at the calf. I asked about a million questions, because I was scared that doing this would forever damage this expensive purchase I'd just made. Aimee was suuuuper friendly and explained to me what the process would be. She had me try the boots on (I could barely get them up --uncomfortable tugging, needing to sit, sweating a little bit). Jimmy, who would be working on them, came out to measure and make sure the stretching process would work. They were very thorough; Jimmy checked each boot individually. He told me that the process might be a slow one, and that I might need to come back multiple times to try on the boots to get them to the right stretch. I was really happy about this, actually; they seemed to care about doing the right job and for my boots to fit properly. About a week later Aimee called and I went to try on the boots. They fit PERFECTLY. I was so pleased with the work they had done! They gave my boots a final conditioning and sent me on my way. Major bonus: This business is run by very kind people who communicate clearly and care about the quality of their work. It's important to me to patronize local businesses that value relationships with their customers; I will absolutely be back. I spent a lot of yelping to find a decent shoe repair about a year ago and I'm so glad I found Benjamin's. First - Amy is amazing. She handles all of the business from the time you walk in to the time you walk out. Shes extremely knowledgeable and actually explains exactly what they will be doing to your shoes (even if you don't ask). I had a pair of expensive boots fixed last winter. Basically I ruined the sole from walking in the city, they also had to fix the inserted heel because that was damaged. They placed more of a walking sole on it so this wouldn't happen again. Took about two weeks and $60. For the amount of work they did and how amazing they look and feel (one year later, still going strong), this was a steal. I had a pair of booties fixed the other day. The heel kept popping out so both shoes needed to be fixed. It cost $30 and 2 week turn around. If you need a shorter turn around time just tell them. Amy even gave me her cell and was going to meet me near the subway to accommodate my work schedule. PS. Amy always gives chocolates on your way out! She is seriously the cutest! read more

Two days and $30 ($15/shoe) later, I have my heels back and they're looking like new. The place itself is right on Jewelers Row. It is actually very difficult to find someone that will do actual shoe/bag *restorations* in the city. I found this business through a recommendation, and though they appear to have a fairly bare bones operation, they do fabulous work. I've taken top quality Italian boots and heels that needed to be re-built and re-soled and they worked with me to get just the right "step", because even a centimeter can make a difference. They are fast and efficient, and as I try to buy only good quality shoes and have them maintained, this is the perfect business for me. Amy is an absolute doll, and she couldn't be more accommodating. She always conditions the leather and I feel like I am able to benefit from a service that will help me extend the wear of my shoes/bags for years more than they would last otherwise. I would and do recommend them to anyone looking for this kind of business., It is true that sometimes you may pay a little bit more money than you might expect, but at the end of the day, you're getting work done that simply no one else will even *do* so I am just thrilled to pieces that I can continue to wear things i love! These folks know what they are doing and take great pride in their work. Took my cognac leather boots in for cleaning (mild winter salt stains) and they did a lovely job cleaning and polishing them. They happened to need a new heel (something the attendant pointed out - she is very knowledgeable) and included that at a discounted price since I was having them cleaned also. I didn't actually SEE "Benjamin" (if that's even his real name...) because I think he was working hard behind the shop's partition. They try to accommodate timelines, but I had said I wasn't hard pressed to have them ASAP, so they took their time and gave me a call in about a week or so. When I went to pick up, boots were in a handled bag with my name clearly marked, so they were easy to carry home. She gave them a final swipe with the polishing cloth and showed me the new heels which looked flawless. I trust they will do a great job with anything you bring their way! I am REALLY unhappy with my shoes this time around. I came to trust Benjamin's over the years, but this last two pair of shoes I spent almost $50 on is a huge letdown. The glue job in my almost mint shoes is terrible---there's all kinds of glue overflowing around the attachment of the sole to the upper shoe! There's also dried black glue(?) along the edges which really makes them look terrible. Another pair of shoes I got "re-soled" look like they weren't soled at all! There is a "sole" on there now that looks like the sole that was underneath the one that got replaced---which leads me to wonder--did they even put a new sole on it? Also, I wonder if they did as well because the shoes don't feel good when I walk in them. The back little raised heel on the bottom is LOWER than the "sole" in the front bottom? I'm really confused and really unhappy. I'm hopefully getting my money back when I bring them back and don't plan on going back again. read more

This place does a great job putting lifts on shoes for leg length discrepancies. He uses a lighter material for the lift so that you are not carrying a heavy shoe as you walk. Customer service is A+ and the turn around is quick. I even brought in Birkenstock sandals with a broken strap and they sewed a new one on matching the color. read more

What can I say?! Benjamin is a black belt-master at his craft. I absolutely dread taking my shoes to be repaired. I simply hate to be parted from them. But even more so, I hate trying to find someone who won't ruin them more than what they already are. Per usual, the Yelp fam did not disappoint. At the 1st hint of Spring, I took three pair of my trusty, go-to sandals to Benjamin. Embarrassingly so, one pair was two steps from being beyond repair. The heel had long been gone and I somehow had worn down the actually heel of the shoe . Benjamin, with his stellar skill, rebuilt the heel AND resoled the shoe. Annndd all w/o stealing a chicken from the pot. I'm pretty sure my sandals look newer now, than when I bought them. I can't say enough great things about Mr. Benjamin.
