I…read morewas a little skeptical when hearing there was a free campground in this state forest but the reviews seemed really good so we decided to make it a stop on our way to West Virginia. The road to get to the campground was winding and very dark but when we arrived we saw a beautiful campground with paved spots. There are no amenities with only a vault toilet and water pump. Still the sites were nice and large. You pass several shooting ranges on the way to the campground. There is also a trail that loops around the campground.

Here are trash bins, fire rings, and picnic tables at each site, plus a well-blazed trail edging the campground. There are pit toilets in the center of the ring that do smell like free campground pit toilets, but they are far enough from the campsites that you'll be okay even on a hot summer day, especially if you're a ping with a self-contained unit. Our site had a great mix of field and tree cover with raspberries or other bramble fruits lining the campground. Hummingbirds, cardinals, nuthatches, and a concert of fireflies were fun to watch. The free part is especially good since there are pigeon, rifle, and handgun target ranges outside the camp loop, and you do hear them even on a Monday. And first thing Tuesday morning. This is a dry campground in every way so bring your own water. If you aren't target practicing, use your red cup and don't act like a rookie. About half the sites were in use the Monday night we stayed. Despite the ballistic sounds, the camp loop was quiet, and we had a very restful stay.

The bathrooms are close by the camp sites and clean! Plus they have hot water for showering. The water pump for drinking water is fresh and better than my tap at home. The lake is so nice and the ice cream stand is the best (bring cash). Definitely recommend booking the camp sites closest to the trail that takes you to the beach. It's about a 15 minute hike, but so much nicer than driving 15 minutes to the beach.

I've been visiting this place for years and had met many kind, friendly and helpful fellow visitors. I cannot say the same for that ranger - I hope y'all never come across her in your effort to find clarity on directions. My favorite areas of Raccoon Creek are the beach and the mineral springs. When the area water levels aren't low, you'll also see a beautiful 10 foot waterfall adjacent to Frankfort Mineral Springs. The beach is lovely in all seasons, but if you can catch it during the peak of Fall foliage. The many colors of the trees reflecting from the lake surface is quite the sight! There's a boat rental and the rates are very reasonable. There's also a very large picnic area with dozens of tables, plenty of parking and restrooms.

I love this campground. A friend of mine told me about this little charm and told me to go since…read moreat my old campground it got quite boring so I looked online and booked a space in silk stocking (as you can see in the pictures below) and when I arrived I noticed that there is no satellite for phones but I like that because it lets me enjoy wildlife without the doomscrolling of social media (you know what apps) and there is just so much things to do. For example, there's a concession stand that has some fire food and there's Wibits on the lake but for the people how don't want to get their hair wet or go underwater in a lake like me, there is also public lake access for swimming to. There is also peddle boats that you peddle on the lake which give you a good view of the lake without having to rent a expensive pontoon boat. They also have kayaks. And they have peddle carts on land for fun travel around the park but me personally I've never used them but they look quite fun. The vibe there is also very good and campfire rings are included with each site though they are kinda dirty so I'd recommend rapping tin foil around food before cooking. The bathrooms do have washing machines and there is a vending machine that is like 50 cents I think and it has washing machine stuff. Just so yall know if your bringing your bike just know that most of the park is rock so it may be a bit hard to ride on. Same with dogs, the rocks may be a bit hard on their paws so just walk them in the grass until there's pavement. Also there is a bigfoots big ride every Saturday night which is a tractor hauling this long wagon with benches in it and it is quite fun. The camp store is well stocked and has some camping must haves like wood and such. The creek behind silk stocking is a great spot for fishing just make sure to release the fish afterwards since they are Austin lake's property. Overall though the park is clean and the bathhouses are nice though since the location is so out-of-no-where the water is very preserved and costs 50 cents for 10 mins but if you go in your RV/Cabin it's free. Also tents are allowed as long as it's just one that is the max.

The pool was filled several inches below the ladder rung and first step. This is the only Koa where we arrived to a fire pit full of cigarette butts which were promptly cleaned out, two hours after I let the office know, when I called the emergency myself to request they be removed. We weren't walk-ins. There is ample signage to guide you to the park, updated baths and laundry, sunflowers planted throughout the park, but also Koa staff who say "sorry but there's nothing I can't do about that" when you let them know you're hurt, your patio fire pit is full of cigarette butts, and the pool is visibly more shallow than it should be. The bonus was the political signs posted by the pool before primaries. Seasonal campers?

You must go through a super tiny town before getting to the actual park. As you make your way into the park you are greeted with a sketchy road with low hanging branches to greet and scratch your rig up to your journey to your site. As you arrive to your site your power box will be sending out over 128-130 volt of electricity to your Rv to add. Keep on trekking to the next Rv park and save yourself a headache. My coach just got quoted for a $7500 dollar fix to get the scratches out and hopefully save the paint. Not scuff marks! Deep scratches. Also to add I let the front desk attendant know about what happened and there was zero concern but a oh well and the reason behind it was they just opened for the season .... If I was a business owner for this place I'd figure out how I could be of assistance in anyway to make it right. 50 bucks a night will now cost me more time and money.

The campground is on a literal mountain top, so it is surrounded by cliffs- great for a view but not suitable for adventurous children or animals. Driving in off the highway was complicated and you will hit many serpentine curves on steep hills. Of course that's nothing the campground can be faulted for, I'm just warning you in advance. They provide directions on the website to avoid low-hanging bridges etc. it's at least 16min from the nearest restaurant or grocery store so plan accordingly. Otherwise the space was a clean plot of land, which the owner clearly puts in effort to keep nice. There is nothing store except an honor system for ice and fire wood. Bring cash. If you have a pull through site, expect no shade/trees. The only sites with shade are around the edge. I had no experience with their toilet/shower situation but I hear you have to pay for it, which, after camping for 30+ years, I have never heard of. Overall, it's a nice plot of land but it was a distance from any civilization and it was not made for children to enjoy.
