The Cellar Restaurant - Greek Gyro

The Cellar is one of those restaurants where you might wonder, "Do they have ...?" And the answer…read morewill probably be, "Yes, they do have that on the menu." They have gyros, meatball subs, pizza, burgers, crab cakes, kabobs, chicken parmesan and lots more. I get a little squinky when I see a multiple-page menu with lots of random foods on it. But I visited with a group, and so I was locked into this place, whether I liked it or not. A quick internet and Yelp search told me that the things to get at The Cellar are the Greek gyro and the pizzas. I didn't want a whole pie just for myself, so I ordered the gyro. The Greek gyro was really good! It is lamb and beef in a pita, topped with tzatziki, lettuce, onion and tomato. All of the veggies were super fresh, and the pita was warm and pillowy. It's served with chips and a pickle. They actually have quite a few Greek or Mediterranean-adjacent items on the menu. One of the people in my group ordered the Black & Blue Salad, which is basically a salad with steak and bleu cheese on it, plus lots of vegetables. It was huge! She ate a lot of it, and it looked like she barely made a dent. When she put the leftovers in the to-go container, she almost needed two containers! It became a running joke that day and for a couple of days afterward about whether or not she actually finished that salad. This is also the location for the 6Pak Bottle Shop, which is basically a liquor store but intensely curated. They have a nice selection of craft beers and wine. There is also a bar downstairs, which I didn't have the pleasure of visiting. Another great thing about The Cellar is that they are open late! Sometimes until midnight, and sometimes until 2 a.m. I guess that makes sense, as they are located basically right across the street from Virginia Tech.

The Cellar has a basement bar. We snagged a few bar seats. The bar server was great. He provided us waters. He quickly took our cocktail orders and made some very delicious cocktails. My sour apple martini was so good that that a second one was in front of me quickly. One of us ordered a full sandwich meal and that sandwich looked humongous and full of meat. We also ordered sides of curly fries. These were fried fresh. It's somewhat of a dark speakeasy vibe. The crowd was tame compared to some of the other bars down the street. We hope to try the full restaurant in our next visit.

We've been looking forward to trying some local eats since I'll be in town on business for a few days. But after the long day and delays on the road, we were exhausted. Cue "settling" for the take-out menus. Ordering was just a little difficult as it was hard to understand the nice man taking our order and they had to call back because they got the credit card number confused, but they were very nice throughout and very customer-oriented. I've got to say, if this is what settling gets you, I want more. That was some quality food. Just the right amount of greasy, the toppings were zesty and spicy, and the sauce was aces. Most places we order from back home have a 3 or 5 mile limit on delivery and their food is cold if we are near their geographic limit. Roma got our order to Comfort Inn on the South side of Blacksburg and it was piping hot and amazing. For food, we're planning to explore the town a little bit while we're here, but going to recommend Roma to lots of people.

The waitress tried to pressure us into feeling bad for giving her over 10% tip stating she expected 20%. M'am respectfully, if you don't do anything beyond your job why do you expect 20%?! Last I checked, tips were meant as a bonus for doing an exceptional job. Just dropping off our food with a smile or taking our order with a smile is the bare minimum when you're in a service oriented job. Not sure when people started becoming so entitled, but if you received a tip worthy of the work you did that should be enough. Definition of what a tip should be: A tip (or gratuity) is a voluntary, discretionary sum of money given by a customer to a service worker (e.g., servers, barbers, valets) as a token of appreciation for a service performed, over and above the base price. Overall, food was good. The staff just made a scene and made everyone at the table feel uncomfortable. It was a party of 4 we got a few drinks and appetizers I think in total we spent like $60. So it's not like it was a gigantic group and she was working her arse off.

The person making my food was not wearing gloves, which is not sanitary, and I did not observe him washing his hands before preparing it. So far I have tried the lamb over rice, spicy pasta, calzones and the pizza. The pizza and the calzone are fine, but I've gotten sick from the pasta both of the times that I have tried it, and the small amount of shrimp for the massive portion of pasta made me a little sad. The lamb over rice was alright, but I found the portion of meat was pretty small, which was the best part of the dish, and the lettuce was wilted and some pieces were brown and slimy so I had to pick them out. All their food is ridiculously greasy, which is great if that's what you are looking for, but I personally prefer my food with a little less oil. There is very limited seating and is very cramped, so be prepared to take it home and eat it. The wait times can be a little long, so definitely order online beforehand. It's open very late, so this place is probably best experienced coming back from a night out.

I've ordered delivery many times and have never had an experience like this…read more My order was set to be delivered to the back of my dorm, which is exactly where the GPS pin in the app directs drivers. The delivery driver called me and said he couldn't wait and was moving on to another order but would circle back later. I was understanding and politely said okay. When he called back, he asked where to meet. I again said the back of the dorm, as directed by the app. I went outside and asked where he was. He said he had his hazard lights on -- but there were multiple cars with hazards on, so that wasn't helpful. When I asked him to describe his surroundings, he described an area I wasn't familiar with. At that point, his tone became frustrated and raised. He told me he "doesn't go to school here" and implied that I needed to accommodate him instead of following the delivery instructions. I calmly asked him to lower his tone and said we could just cancel the order if it was too much trouble. He then demanded that I meet him at a "main road" without explaining where that was. When I asked to cancel, he ended the call rudely and told me to do it myself. I was polite and patient throughout this interaction, but the lack of professionalism and communication from the driver was unacceptable. I understand deliveries can be tricky, but speaking to customers this way and refusing to follow the app's directions is not okay.

The food was so bad. It had no flavor at all and the dough reminded me of the pre-made frozen dough from WalMart. We spent so much money for food that was edible at best. Also, why would you deliver 7 calzones, in boxes that all you have to do is check the item on the box to reflect what is inside but not bother doing so? Im not sure if it is laziness or simply a lack of caring. What a waste of money!
