I'll give it a 3/5 because the food we ordered was decent. However, the customer service was a complete turn off therefore it dropped the review down. The waitress tried to pressure us into feeling bad for giving her over 10% tip stating she expected 20%. M'am respectfully, if you don't do anything beyond your job why do you expect 20%?! Last I checked, tips were meant as a bonus for doing an exceptional job. Just dropping off our food with a smile or taking our order with a smile is the bare minimum when you're in a service oriented job. Not sure when people started becoming so entitled, but if you received a tip worthy of the work you did that should be enough. Definition of what a tip should be: A tip (or gratuity) is a voluntary, discretionary sum of money given by a customer to a service worker (e.g., servers, barbers, valets) as a token of appreciation for a service performed, over and above the base price. Overall, food was good. The staff just made a scene and made everyone at the table feel uncomfortable. It was a party of 4 we got a few drinks and appetizers I think in total we spent like $60. I've had this pizza before, and I thought it was really fantastic, so I was pretty excited to try it again Most of the pizza was pretty similar to the last time I've had it. This starts with the olive oil and garlic base - which I prefer over the traditional red sauce base for pizzas When going with this option, the pizza gets an oily, buttery, flavor that tastes really good - with an additional garlic flavor I did think it could be thicker - as the pizza did seem to be a bit on the thinner side. All three of the cheeses tasted pretty good but maybe there could've been more of it Moving on to the toppings, my favorite part by far was the mushrooms. These were just fantastic - cooked well, combined great with the olive oil base, and were really soft and juicy. The rest of the toppings weren't super noticeable, however, as I didn't taste the onions/chives that much I do have to mention how good the garlic aioli swirl was - it just adds that slight extra bit of oil/garlic flavor but only in certain spots The part that strongly disappointed me here was the crust When I've had the pizza before - it's been fantastic - but this time it was incredibly chewy and barely even edible. My jaw was in pain from chewing after finishing the crust on my very first slice. If not for this being the case in every slice of the pizza I had, I would've given this a really high score, but the crust being so bad drags this down overall significantly. Not sure what happened in this case - but I somewhat considered sending the pizza back due to it For the price, this won't beat national chains like Dominos, and I do think (certain) options at Dominos are better, but compared to other foods it's still a good enough price for a full meal read more

The pizza itself was good, but everything else about our experience was disappointing. To celebrate a successful move- in at Virginia Tech, we decided to try this restaurant. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated for lunch, which would have been fine if the service had made up for it--but it didn't. Our table wasn't clean when we sat down, and we were never given plates, napkins, or utensils. We had to track someone down just to get the basics, and it felt like our server wasn't attentive at all. It took forever for our food to arrive and we had only ordered personal pizzas. We ordered additional drinks from the bar since we were waiting so long and our server never brought them. The manager brought it over after a long wait. When the food finally arrived, the pizza was tasty (what you'd expect from Mellow Mushroom), but the order was wrong. The group next to us, who had the same server, also got a wrong order. Honestly surprised with how bad the reviews are. Came here for a birthday celebration with a party of 15 and didn't even make a reservation, but had no issue at all getting a seat (this was a Wednesday, so I wouldn't try doing this on a weekend). Service was great - our orders were taken quickly and our food arrived quickly. As for the food, I was the only person who ended up getting a sandwich, as I can't eat pizza. However, everyone else seemed to like their pizzas and the pricing was super fair. My sandwich was pretty good too! It all depends on who is working with the experience you will have. I normally sit at the bar when I go to restaurants that have them. One night I had a drink and the bartender tried to give me my check when I wanted another drink. They weren't busy, but I didn't linger after the second drink. I've been to this place before for the pizzas during my time at VT and the pizzas are pretty good! They have various flavours and toppings for the pizzas which I really enjoy. The crusts of their pizzas are bland and doughy though, which may not matter for some people but I like eating crust so that's partially a let down. There were also dead bugs in our water but I lived through a lot of questionable things in my life to even care that there were dead bugs floating in our water. LOL. One thing I recommend NOT doing is going to Mellow during a game day... I went for homecoming at 5 pm and it was packed, but we were seated outside immediately, which I liked at first but immediately regretted after. It's always windy or some sort of cold in Blacksburg, so sitting outside was not the best idea, even if those were the only open seats. It was worse because the two pizzas we ordered took over an hour... so we were just sitting in the cold for an hour... I just don't recommend sitting outside in general in Blacksburg because things fly away or it just gets cold all of the sudden. Our waitress was very nice though. Staff definitely seemed overwhelmed at times but they're still friendly. I think the pizzas are reasonably priced for what they give you. This place is easily walkable to from campus and there's some downtown parking, although I'm not sure about parking rules. read more

Came here for dinner yesterday and had a good experience! There are no reservations but we were able to get seated immediately. We started with the spinach artichoke dip, which tasted great. For drinks, we got a couple margaritas, a mule, sunset at the beach, and a gin and tonic and everything came out promptly and tasted perfect. For food, we got two house salads and 2 pizzas - veg out (thin crust) and holy shiitake pizzas. They were amazing and tasted so delicious! I will start by stating that I look for Mellow Mushroom locations when traveling because it has been a favorite. However, this experience was a huge disappointment, maybe a Sunday night thing given other reviews. I think it was my last time at a Mellow Mushroom. I will try other places from now on. It was the first time we sent food back to a kitchen in our lifetime of 50 years. We are not complainers, but this was bad. When we arrived (5:30 p.m.), we waited over 5-10 minutes for the hostess to just appear. No one was greeting us or saying hi. Another group of 3 was waiting too. No sign was there except to wait to be seated. Then the hostess came rushing back apologetically and breathless. She then began to seat people. Once seated, it took 5-10 minutes for the waitress to appear and bring drinks (5:50). She took our orders. We then saw her about 25 minutes later (6:15). At that point, the medium mighty meaty pizza had arrived nice and hot. Our son was two pieces in. She asked if we were ok but rushed off before we could ask for him to get a refill. So, we have been in the restaurant 45 minutes and have one pizza, dropped by another person who then ran off quickly. We have no idea when the other two are coming - two gf house pizzas. Our son had now eaten half his pizza (mostly what he was going to eat), and our pizzas are sat down in front of us. It is now 6:25. We ask for our son to get his refill. The girl who brought all the pizzas said she will find the waitress. The pizzas have raw veggies on top and are warm to cool. The waitress appears with new drinks for everyone. We explain that the pizza is not hot and ask if she can reheat the pizzas. She could put the pizza pans on her hand because they were so cool. She says they were ready first so they must have cooled down. She passes a few minutes later and I explain that we had just gotten the pizzas so they had been sitting somewhere. She says she will talk to the manager. Our son is done with his pizza so I suggest we leave and try to find food elsewhere. 6:35 - we finally get the pizzas back - they are very crisp (can't cut with a knife and fork) and my husband's is burnt on top. We are not eating 20 minutes after our son who is not done. We ask for the check. The manager never comes to talk with us. The waitress returns with the check at 6:45. She is apologizing but only takes one gf pizza off the bill. We eat the pizza as best as we can. She runs the credit card. We put my son's leftovers in a box and leave at 6:55. What is the use of refills if the waitress does not come by to pay attention to our drinks. We say three waitresses and their tables were never near the other tables. The hostess was constantly running around. The wait staff were running different places. The restaurant was not full. Where were our gf pizzas when we did not have them? Great service, great pizza! We just moved to the area and we're staying in a hotel until our house was ready. We had our dogs and did a quick search to see if there were any dog friendly places and we got lucky with this place. The outside seating was nice on the patio. They did have some tables with umbrellas that provided adequate shade. The waitress brought a dog water bowl out when she brought us our drinks with an extra cold glass of water for them! They really do like dogs! We got the pretzels for an appetizer then each ordered a small pizza which was a lot of food. The crust was amazing and the sauces had tons of flavor! Mellow Mushroom consistently produces quality pizzas in a cool aesthetic, and this location is no different. While not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, it's definitely a great place to enjoy some top-notch food and/or some top-shelf drinks. I have been to several locations of this chain in the Richmond area, though my friend suggested we have dinner here during my visit. Hey, I knew it would likely be good, why not? Thankfully our visit here lived up to expectations, and we had a great pizza. Our server did a great job, and she made several callbacks to the table during our meal. Parking here is a bit of a challenge, though thankfully my friend knew a nearby lot that we could use. Examining the beautiful art and quirky woodwork is always one of the best parts of my visits to Mellow Mushroom, and there is plenty to see here. Some chains tend to be inconsistent or develop issues as they start franchising, though Mellow Mushroom has done an excellent job in maintaining its brand. If you keep opening up new locations, I'll keep coming! Overall: 4.0 stars --- Pros: - Consistently excellent food, and great drink options as well. - Great service. - Beautiful/quirky interior decorations make it a fun experience.
