The Cellar is one of those restaurants where you might wonder, "Do they have ...?" And the answer will probably be, "Yes, they do have that on the menu." They have gyros, meatball subs, pizza, burgers, crab cakes, kabobs, chicken parmesan and lots more. I get a little squinky when I see a multiple-page menu with lots of random foods on it. But I visited with a group, and so I was locked into this place, whether I liked it or not. A quick internet and Yelp search told me that the things to get at The Cellar are the Greek gyro and the pizzas. I didn't want a whole pie just for myself, so I ordered the gyro. The Greek gyro was really good! It is lamb and beef in a pita, topped with tzatziki, lettuce, onion and tomato. All of the veggies were super fresh, and the pita was warm and pillowy. It's served with chips and a pickle. They actually have quite a few Greek or Mediterranean-adjacent items on the menu. One of the people in my group ordered the Black & Blue Salad, which is basically a salad with steak and bleu cheese on it, plus lots of vegetables. It was huge! She ate a lot of it, and it looked like she barely made a dent. When she put the leftovers in the to-go container, she almost needed two containers! It became a running joke that day and for a couple of days afterward about whether or not she actually finished that salad. This is also the location for the 6Pak Bottle Shop, which is basically a liquor store but intensely curated. They have a nice selection of craft beers and wine. There is also a bar downstairs, which I didn't have the pleasure of visiting. Another great thing about The Cellar is that they are open late! Sometimes until midnight, and sometimes until 2 a.m. I guess that makes sense, as they are located basically right across the street from Virginia Tech. read more

This is a nice hidden gem! On a busy corner of the Main Street is Cellar Restauarant. After a couple stops down the street, we wanted to end our evening in a quiet place. The Cellar has a basement bar. We snagged a few bar seats. The bar server was great. He provided us waters. He quickly took our cocktail orders and made some very delicious cocktails. My sour apple martini was so good that that a second one was in front of me quickly. One of us ordered a full sandwich meal and that sandwich looked humongous and full of meat. We also ordered sides of curly fries. These were fried fresh. It's somewhat of a dark speakeasy vibe. The crowd was tame compared to some of the other bars down the street. We hope to try the full restaurant in our next visit. read more

I asked for the Mad Greek on pita bread, rather than the sub it came with, as I preferred the softer style of bread The bread came out pretty good - it was pretty soft, cooked well, and had some char marks but wasn't overly so The 12-inch that I ordered was actually two separate 6-inch subs, where each was honestly quite large - enough for a single person to finish Using a lot of willpower, I managed to finish both of them, but it was pretty difficult and required a few breaks The reason for this was the beef I can't discuss the beef without first discussing the portion size. Each pita bread was absolutely loaded with beef - I mean completely stuffed When you'd pick it up, even without a first bite, the beef would already be falling out, and this would continue throughout the eating process until there was an accumulation of pieces on the plate. Due to how packed this was, each bite was like 80% beef. Some may not like this, but because the beef was pretty flavorful, I loved it - you really get your moneys worth with this Since there was so much meat on the sandwich, I really didn't taste much of the other toppings - like olives, onions, peppers, and spinach. There was a little bit of cheese but I felt like there could've been more The lettuce was definitely there but I didn't like how it was just in two huge pieces rather than evenly distributed across in smaller pieces The mostly-beefness did make the flavor a bit one-note as there weren't really many differing flavors in the different bites Lastly, the tzatziki sauce was pretty good - it was a bit unequally distributed but there was a good amount of it - and it certainly was present in most bites For the price of around 15 dollars, this much food is really good. I might recommend getting the 12 inch and splitting it among two people so it'd be pretty cheap per person read more

I love coming here for a pint on weekends and to hang out with my friends. The downstairs has an awesome old-school tavern feel, but I can get very crowded on the weekends, which is understandable for a bar in a college town. However, I did not like the food here, and have given it multiple tries. The food, while well cooked, unfortunately did not have a whole lot of flavor for my preference and I really don't get the hype around the restaurant. That being said, they have great drink deals, especially their Hammer Time on weekdays. They have a great selection of wine, beer, and cocktails, especially when compared to other bars in the area, which I do like to see. The bartenders are great, and I feel like many of the service complaints are due to the evening craziness of the restaurant, particularly on game days and weekends when parents are in town. read more

I have celiac disease, and I've been dealing with this genetic disease for 20 years. I have had the gluten free pizza before at the Cellar, and I was looking forward to it last weekend. I explained my allergy to the waitress and asked for some aluminum foil underneath the pizza while it cooked if possible. She said it would be no problem. I had a reaction like flour had been sprinkled all over the pizza or the crust was drug through flour. I was sick with an inflammatory reaction of fever, chills, and all the other GI symptoms. I will never eat there again. Don't count on it actually being gluten free. read more

It's the second time I've been here. I came back for the gyro because it was so good the first time. It comes in two sizes (6 in and 12 in, but the 12 is really two gyros.) They come stuffed full of meat and tomatoes and lettuce with a great tzatziki sauce. Service is pretty good, it just depends on how big the crowd is, just like any other place. But many years later when I married my husband and I moved to Dublin Va due to my husbands job at Volvo for twenty years and OMG the pita and Tzatziki dip was out of this world and went home with a vegetarian pizza added pepperoni And it was runner up to pizza inn and let me tell you in this area no one comes close to pizza inn. Very nice young man at the bar and after all these years I am impressed and there's so many years that has gone by but going back home I was very impressed. So thank you to the owners of the cellar. Great spot downtown with a nice and relaxed vibe. Came here with a few friends for dinner and would definitely come back! I got the chicken souvlaki kabobs, which were cooked very well. Neither the asparagus nor the chicken were dry, and the rest of my friends were also very happy with what they got. It took a while to get menus and have our order taken. Granted it was dinner hours during the day before VT undergrad graduation so, it's busier than usual. Once we ordered, food came out pretty quickly. My mussels in chopped tomato salsa type sauce was SO salty & overcooked. Rubbery texture. It tasted like mussels had been cooked in brine, frozen then heated up. Will never order again. The others ordered Gyros Sandwich, Cheeseburger, Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. All of those tasted fine, no complaints. BUT, the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich had no grilled onions, nor grilled bell peppers. Some restaurants only do grilled onions but this one had nothing. Just 2 romaine lettuce leaves which left us all scratching our heads. I don't know if we'll be going back here when we go back to Blacksburg. **The steps to enter the restaurant slopes downward towards the patio and a bit slippery. There are no railings. An old man went crashing down hard onto the brick patio and it looked like he had hit his shoulder against the metal cart by the entrance. This place sure went downhill over the years! The scene: Thursday night in the summer. In case you are not from here, B-burg clears out in the summer. You don't have to wait for tables. Issue 1: Waited 8 min for the host to finish their conversation and even acknowledge us. (We should have walked out then!) Issue2: Rude waitstaff talking loudly about how little another table left them in tips (hmmm, I wonder why?) Issue 3: Was given lukewarm spin/art dip. 4: Sat for 55 min waiting for two 9" Pizzas which came out looking like they sat under a heat lamp - dough had a horrible aftertaste. The cellar is my favorite restaurant in Blacksburg!! Great food for a great price. They have a great lunch special for the pizzas and sandwiches where you get your meal with a drink for under $10. It can get busy at times, but they have a downstairs portion of the restaurant that a lot of people don't know about. And if it's nice, highly recommend sitting outside! Here's some of my favorite menu items, but you really can't go wrong. - the curly fries are some of the best fries out there, and I love the meatball sub - the pizza is awesome. - the gyros and chicken souvlaki pitas are great. - I love the chicken parm too. The most horrible service I ever experienced. The waitress was very rude and the manager does not care. It was my first time here for my OWN BIRTHDAY dinner with a friend on Easter Sunday. I heard The Cellar had excellent Italian food. I politely asked for the manager after the rude waitress rejected my valid form of ID from New York. Just before the manager arrived the waitress yelled at me stating that she was not serving me because I was rude even though I was being polite and wanted to show my ID was valid. Went in to have a drink and dinner. Sat at the bar once walked in, but there is a bar downstairs in the "cellar", hence the name and is more of a bar scene. There is a nice list of beers, domestic, import, and craft. All at decent prices. The wine list is very limited. Learned this is greek place with some italian dishes. Ordered the special, fried gnocchi with marinara dipping sauce. It was good, but a lot of bread. Does make a good snack while drinking. Got 12" margherita pizza and the 12" gyro. Both were good, but nothing over the ordinary. I would be back if in the area and recommend checking this place out at least once. read more

This is a classic eatery located in the heart of downtown Blacksburg. They have been around for decades, offering a variety of cuisines. The restaurant has a fun, laid back vibe to it. In the winter, I really enjoy ordering their baked ziti with meatballs or meat lasagna. They are the perfect comfort food on a cold winter day. For an appetizer, I would 100% recommend their house-made spinach and artichoke dip, served with warm pitas. They are known for their spinach and artichoke dip and it is a must order! Their greek salad is also a great option, served with copious amounts of olives, feta, and veggies, served with 2 dolmas. Most of their entrees are also served with a piece of garlic bread, which is always yummy! The staff was friendly and nice. We sat outside as it was a perfect day. Here are some of the things we ordered: pita and taziki. Everyone enjoyed this and they give you a ton of taziki. Crab cakes were ok, they came with taziki and a sauce that was on the sweeter side. Cheese pizza was average. Rigatoni and meatballs, the pasta was good a bit overcooked for some but I didn't mind it. It was cheesy but could have used a bit more sauce maybe order it on the side. Chicken kabob, potatoes and broccoli. The chicken is seasoned heavily with a lot of pepper so this is only good if you are a pepper fan. They have a great happy hour with beers half off. Came for a tour with my kid VA Tech, the food was good but i think it's my worst experience in a restaurant ever!! we had to wait over 30 mins for an appetizer (meanwhile both tables either side of us received their food before us and were seated after) the server was just rude, not incredibly interested if we needed silverware after having our food served, so food sat there and got cold until she returned with silverware, finally ready to go and she switched my credit card up with another customer and then double charged me with his food as well As mine so even though they gave me a voided receipt I have to call the restaurant and get the additional Money back that was double charged on top of my meal. Watched the hostess hand what I believed to be my order to another customer, but didn't think anything of it, until another 20 minutes later that same customer returned with (my order). Frequent this place a lot. We live in NRV seasonally. June to December. This was our 3rd visit since June. Previous two like most were great. Outdoor dining good food. This evening was our worst ever. Not sure what is going on. Seated ourselves outside. When we arrived 2 outside tables were taken. After 5-10 minutes no servers came out and one man went inside to see if they were open. Two vacant tables had un-bused dishes. Not sure about inside but 4 servers for 6 tables. Cellar is listed on Find Me GF as a restaurant that offers gluten free food for those that have celiac disease. I felt confident when I ordered my gluten free sandwich that I would enjoy a delicious meal that would not make me sick. Unfortunately the waiter was careless and did not record my order properly. I am now on my third day of severe symptoms caused by my meal at Cellar. Needless to say I am unhappy. If you offer Gluten Free meals it is imperative that the staff understand the importance of making sure that promise is followed through. I ask the Cellar restaurant to train their staff on the importance of being aware of food allergies. The next time a mistake is made it could be fatal. read more

The biggest advantage was the availability to make each dish gluten free as needed. I even tried the "Luck of the Draw" beer for $3! All food was pretty good and the atmosphere and wait staff was on point! Absolutely a must for student or visitor. read more
