Benny's soft pretzels never disappoint. Every year, a friend hosts an Oktoberfest at home on the west side of the state. So every year, I call in advance to order 3-4 dozen soft pretzels for pick up. Benny's always has my order ready, are super friendly and the soft pretzels are amazing! They do sell cute decorated sugar cookies (M cookies, fall leaves, etc) as well as doughnuts, fritters, etc. But the soft pretzels are seriously the star here! read more

I have been going on and off to Benny's Bakery, since it was Walker's Bakery in the 1970s. Back then, this was the place where the farmers and townsfolk gathered to talk about local politics over some freshly brewed coffee and some great bagels and doughnuts. Located in downtown Saline, on the south side of US-12, Benny's offers some of the best cakes your money can buy. From a small round layer cake, all the way up to a giant wedding cake, the artistic staff at Benny's can make it for you. They are not satisfied until you are. I have always loved their glazed doughnuts, and blueberry muffins. Thankfully, Benny's loads their muffins with the right amount of blueberries. Unlike other bakeries, where you have to hunt for a single berry in their muffins, this is not the case here at Benny's. With that said, they bake some of the best Christmas cookies on earth. I heard great things about Benny's doughnuts from my boyfriend, who had the pleasure of trying some at work. He insisted we come here on a Saturday morning to check it out for ourselves. We got in at 10AM and they already sold out of a lot of their doughnuts. We managed to snag some of the classic doughnuts and two pretzels. The doughnuts were good, but the pretzels were great. Also, the doughnuts and pretzels are so reasonably priced! You can be confident in the amount of bang you are getting for your buck here. Not very many reviews but most of them here really hyped me up for the Saturday pretzels. I have to say wow!!! It was truly awesome. They sell them by singles or dozens. When I can at 8 am on saturday they were already busy. As for the pretzel, 5/5 amazing. it was warm soft and absolutely one of the best I've ever had. So good I finished one in the car and went back to buy another. I also tried the apple fritter which was pleasantly not too sweet and very soft on the inside. I was not as big fan of the cream long John but in general their food is really good. Recommend the Saturday pretzel for sure! I only didn't buy a dozen because I knew I would finish it all by myself. read more

For me, the difference between good and great here is the friendliness of the people serving me. I remember before the pandemic I'd meet a friend there and often felt like the people serving are not too concerned about pleasantries and it put me off a little. Today, though it was a different person behind the counter it was a very similar experience. It kinda gives the impression that you interrupting something else they'd rather be doing. Though I like their products I really think a little extra friendliness and could make the experience better and go a long way and be the difference between this place being good versus great. I called Benny's Bakery to order a cake for my son's birthday. I asked if they knew the character Peppa Pig and they said no, so I asked if they could just put a generic pig on the cake. They said yes, but then I got this wonderful cake with a perfectly drawn Peppa on it! Picture attached. My son was thrilled. He kept saying "Beppa! Beppa!" when he saw the cake. Like somebody else mentioned, I've been a fan of Benny's Bakery since it was called Walker's. Back then, workers from the Ford factory hung out there in the wee hours before their shifts. Like somebody else said, the pretzels on Saturday are amazing. Each weekend, they sell 400-500 dozen. 400-500 DOZEN!!! And even more on Michigan Football Saturdays. That's for a small family business. OK, full disclosure: my sister and brother-in-law bought this bakery from Benny Galimberti himself around 2005. I have nothing to do with the bakery, though, except that I occasionally go to bag pretzels on Saturday mornings when I'm visiting (I live in CT now). Seriously, the donuts, pretzels, breads, cookies, and cakes are fantastic. Steve Babiak (the current Baker Extraordinaire) makes cookies frosted with either UM or MSU logos during that game week, and he does the same with OSU cookies during that week (he's still a Buckeye at heart, which is a source of some family ribbing, depending on who's got the better football team). Just like back in the 70's, the locals add a lot to Benny's. On any given Saturday morning, I can walk in and say hello to my high school friends or their parents. My father is one of the men who hangs in the middle of the bakery with other retired folk talking about the old days (cue Springsteen's "Glory Days"). If you're from out of town, it's just as welcoming, so you definitely should go. One caution, go to the bathroom before you enter--the bathroom is in the haunted (seriously) basement, and it's, um, well, just go before you get there. So, get my point? Go, get some pretzels, eat them all on Saturday, digest on Sunday, anticipate on Monday (they're closed), and get the donuts on Tuesday (through Friday)! read more

Bennys is the classic example of hometown cookin. Being new to the area I kept hearing about it. The donuts. The pretzels. It certainly is a saline establishment. The problem is that I really don't like it. Donut shops often have a characteristic taste that is the product is their frying oil. Places like dunkin donuts don't do this because their oil has little "character." The other way of looking at it is that they replace their oil. Some local places, though, get a signature taste that goes into everything that is put in the oil. So then what happens when your oil tastes just completely nasty and leaves you with a terrible aftertaste for hours? When you go home to brush your teeth to get the flavor out? You get Bennys I am a huge donut fan. I will not eat Bennys anymore. They are very fresh and the flavors are good. But the oil is so nasty I cannot do it anymore. By the way even the pretzels have a hint of the signature flavor. That being said, the locals really really are proud of bennys. And the pretzels are huge favorites. But I'll go elsewhere, thank you very much. read more

This tiny bakery opens at 5:30 in the morning, which is why it was bare when I stopped by at noon. The only thing left to try were some donuts and some cookies! No bread, or pies or cakes! I am not a frequent customer of Benny's so I just may be out of touch on prices for a private owned bakery. I purchased 6 pretzels and 2 apple fritters this morning ....$13 ..... it seems that every time I do go to Benny's the prices increase exponentially. The pretzels are above average but not great. The apple fritters were below average. I would like to support local businesses but the value is just not there anymore. I am going back to Tim Hortons. read more

The same card reader they use at Benny's was used in Illinois to make over $500 in purchases. I had to make a police report. So, if you want great doughnuts/pastries, go to Benny's. Don't let the semi-broken screen door or beat-up interior fool you: these are the best doughnuts in Saline, and I think the best I've ever eaten. Amazing stuff here, folks - no joke, no sugarcoating (pun intended). Pretzels are good, but only available on Sat mornings. The line goes out the door on a Saturday morning in the fall especially. There is always a friend or neighbor in line to talk to because the whole town shows up there on Saturdays. The staff is friendly and helpful. The new owners have carried on the same traditions and have added some new things to make the place and the selection even better.
