Well this is embarrassing. It took a friend visiting from out of town to learn that Bird Dog Baking had a permanent home on a prominent corner of Ypsi... for years. Even worse, it's amazing. And I'm not one to gush over bakeries. And this bakery does it all. Naturally leavened breads, sweet pastries, savory baked goods, and great coffee all in a clean, well lit, charming, and friendly space. While I have had BDB's rye teacake at Argus in the past, I had not delved deeply into their full line of products. This changed last week when I popped in and fell in love with their buckwheat financier, spelt scone with braised collards, cheddar, and bacon, and their Ypsi sour loaf. Here's the bottom line: the flavors and textures are just freaking fabulous. Across the board. Financiers, scones, and bread all share the same praise. Remarkable crunchy crusts, juxtaposed with tender interiors, and flavor that just goes on and on. Brand new fan. Well worth the drive out to Ypsi. I think I found my new favorite hangout with those big big windows, easy weekday parking, and free wifi. My hope is to get there early enough sometime to get a hot baguette out of the oven, or some other loaf when it is still warm. Hot bread and good butter is the best food combination on Earth. I'm ready to throw down in defense of those words. I suspect when I get that timing figured out, Bird Dog Baking might be able to squeeze its way into the top spot of my greatest culinary experience of all time. But I'm a simple man, with simple tastes... even if I have almost impossibly high standards. Oh yeah, they also are seriously into local grains, using a wide variety of lesser known grains, and all kinds of other super cool and nerdy food stuff. Fantastic new-ish bakery in downtown Ypsilanti at the corner of Huron and Michigan Ave. Plenty of parking nearby in the lots just north and south of the bakery. There's a selection of many fantastic breads and baked goods. The space is fantastic and bathed in great natural light. The bird dog Bakery exemplifies what truly amazing bread can be! I purchased three bakes items all amazing. Small drip coffee with a house made cardamom syrup. The scone is ginger apricot, and it is absolutely exquisite. The outside texture is crunchy and sweet and buttery. The inside texture is dense and moist. The apricots are moist and very generous. There is a great distribution of flavor throughout the scone and I dare say this may be the best scone I've ever had in the United States. It taste like the apricot is Turkish and the flour is a very high-quality. I don't get an overpowering sense from the ginger, but it's just there enough to give it a little extra zest. if you're looking for some amazing baked goods this place is where it's at. The interior dining space is a little bit on the cold and draft side and the chairs are very rigid so I wouldn't say it's a comfortable hang out, but I would definitely say stop in and get your bread and then go eat it somewhere comforting. read more

Wow was this place busy! We grabbed some food and drinks to go. I had the sourdough toast with cream cheese and pepper- yum! My son had a breakfast sandwich and enjoyed it. I've been trying to get one of these for months, every time they are sold out by 9 am, and I don't get up early enough. I think it's strange if you sell out by 9 everyday and you're a bakery it seems to me why wouldn't you make twice as many. Bread is good but business practice makes no sense to me. We enjoyed a delicious box of pastries from Bird Dog Baking this afternoon. We got there a bit later in the day so somethings were sold out but even still we had am ample amount to choose from and everything we landed on was a knockout. We had the following: buckwheat cocoa nib financier, ginger molasses cookies, cran-oat cookies, and an carrot, apple, squash, and rye tea cake. Wowowowow! In particular the financier blew our minds. You can tell they use ample amounts of good butter because the baked edges had a nice crisp, rich texture. The ginger cookies were perfectly chewy and perfectly spiced, the cran-oat cookie had a nice crispy edge but was soft in the middle, and the tea cake was unique with the combo of the veggies, fruit, and rye flour. But so so good. I didn't get any this time but I have had their bread in other places and it's also very good. I regret not getting a loaf this time! The bakery space is bright and airy with a bit of seating. I could definitely see myself rolling in here for a coffee and pastry and my laptop to do a bit of working outside of the house or taking a meeting here. Updating my review as Bird Dog has officially opened their brick & mortar space! It's on the other side of their Sunday brunch pick up window so no need to travel far. I stopped by on Friday afternoon & they were sold out of everything except 2 loaves of bread and a slice of rye tea cake. I promptly ordered the Rye Tea Cake (A true whole-grain cake with the earthy flavors of rye shining through. Made with 100% whole, local, stone-milled rye flour.) It's a favorite of mine that I'll get around town at places like Argus Farm Stop. I also ordered their house masala chai to pair with my rye tea cake slice. They roast the spices in house + a black tea + sweetened with brown sugar. Very tasty - would definitely get again! I'll be back for brunch now that there's ample seating! read more

I've been a fan of theirs for years but this is the first time I've been to their new store front. We went for brunch on Mother's Day and we weren't disappointed. My daughter had the Avocado Toast and I had the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a Bialy. Both were really good. I also had a latte with cardamom syrup. So good! They are located in half of the old Dalat space, but the inside has been updated and looks great now. People were friendly and we got our food and drinks quickly. read more

I stopped in for lunch today and was served by a wonderful staff member, Mani. She suggested the green rooibos with honey and a piece of focaccia. Both were excellent. I'm not usually. Huge focaccia fan, but this was the perfect texture, with thin zucchini and mild Ethiopian spice . I also bought a loaf of dark rye, and it was eonderful(dense and soft at the same time. Bird Dog is one of those places that knows how to add multigrains to baked goods while still preserving the texture of each item, allowing the grains to add complexity. I had the rhubarb scone and am glad I don't live in the area because I'd be there every day, especially since, unlike many places, they provide good tea that is brewed perfectly. I also enjoyed the space, which didn't make me feel crowded, and the service was friendly and efficient. Ypsilanti is turning out to be the place to go for the best baked goods and coffee- Bird Dog Baking is a lovely addition! I tried the rhubarb scone- it was way too crunchy in my opinion and could have knocked out a tooth, yikes! I'm more familiar with scones being a softer cake-like or flaky scone. The coffee is great (they use Hyperion coffee), and their rye tea cakes and oatmeal cookies are super tasty. The baked goods here are all so delicious! I have been looking for the perfect scone, and I have found it here- bacon, cheddar, scallion scone! It's so delicious, it's golden crusty outside and moist and perfect inside. Also the delicious rye bread and rye cake. Everything is made with real butter and the best flours! OMG Ypsi has so needed this place. What am I saying Washtenaw has needed this for years. (yes this is the view from another homesick California native.) I just discovered it today on a walk, had to return home for a credit card and drive back because they don't have tap-to-pay yet but it was still worth it. I got the Bialy egg sandwich which was pretty perfect. scrambled egg, bacon, baby greens and a cheese sauce (?) on an everything Bialy. Everything was cooked perfect. No microwave used here.
