I've been to Benny's before to have a purse repaired, he completed the job within two hours and only charged me five dollars. He did a great job. I recently needed a pair of boots heeled and brought them to a shoemaker in Des Plaines closer to my home. The owner told me it would cost $60 to replace half inch heels and it would take over two weeks because he was backlogged because he was on vacation. I picked up my boots and brought them back to Benny's even though it was a bit out of my way. Benny fixed him within a couple of days and charged me 1/4 of what John's shoe repair wanted to charge me. Go to Benny's!! He may be old-school, but he knows his shoes. read more

I cannot recommend this place enough! Benny is an absolute sweetheart. I needed a badly scuffed pair of leather shoes repaired for a wedding the next day. He warned the leather was sensitive and it may not come out perfectly as the type of leather was sensitive. I could barely tell the shoe was damaged when he was done and he was done in less than a hour. At the end, he only asked for payment of whatever we thought was appropriate. read more

In our neighborhood, a lot of old trades are still prominent figures of the community. The butcher shop where you can get some fresh Italian sausage. The pasta shop where you can bring home some fresh spaghetti, gnocci and ravioli. The tailor, where custom alterations are exquisite. And then there's Benny, the old-school Italian guy who runs his shoe repair shop. He sings in Italian while you wait for him to find your shoes in his eclectic shoe filing system. He will ask that you give a deposit of your choice right there and tell you that he won't charge you a lot, as he wants his customers to leave happy. So a man who is proud of his trade...Wow, now that's just commendable and rare to find these days. For a pair of my beloved boots to have new soles was $25. But I have a feeling he charges what he likes and what type of mood he is in that day. I can't hold that against this man who I picture doing the same thing back in Italy at his tiny shop in the village, as he proudly says to me "Arrivederci" as I exit, with my boots in tow.... Benny is amazing! You won't find people like him owning a business nowadays. Brought my dogs bed here to be sewn even though it's a shoe repair he was willing to help me out (this bed is huge considering my dog is 105 pounds). He also fixed mine and my boyfriends jackets. I asked him how much he said $15 for all of them. I was amazed considering these days you feel ripped off everywhere you go and people love to charge you a lot. I gave him a extra $10 and he was so thankful for it. I recommend this place to everyone. UPdate: dropped off 3 pair of shoes to be fixed. I came back 5 days after the promised date allwoing ample time. He lost one pair and made me riffle through everyone's stinky shoes to find mine. He has no organization system. Now I have to waste my time to go back. I wanted to pay for the shoes he was able to find (oh wait, that was me who found my own shoes) and he said he wouldnt take a check after giving me a nasty look. I really hate writing this review because I'm a big fan of supporting local business but my experience was terrible. I dropped off a few pairs of shoes two weeks ago to have heels replaced and overall I wanted them to be cleaned. He told me the repairs would be twenty dollars cash (though seemed to be willing to take whatever cash I had) Fast forward two weeks my husband goes to pick up my shoes and the gentleman who owns the place REPEATEDLY attempts to give him the wrong shoes. He also charged my husband more money than he quoted me at drop off excuse they were hard to repair. ($25) I wasn't with my husband and at one point I checked my phone and I had received 8 calls from this place. Apparently he had given my husband someone else's very expensive shoes and they were pissed. So I had to go back today and drop off shoes that weren't mine before the cops got involved. The shoes that were mine had the heels replaced but they weren't cleaned so all in all it was a bad experience. read more

I went to Benny for years -- not sure WHAT is going on but the last few times it's a DISASTER!!! Shoes are lost - he can't find them -- the workmanship is not even close to what he offered before -- it's a shame -- as this type of old world workmanship is so hard to find. I felt like I was getting a descent job at a good price, but it really was piss poor. Not until my last visit did I realize or come to terms with the fact that the work is as sloppy as the shop. I came into Benny's Shoe Repair in hopes that he could fix my baseball glove that had a broken lace. I expressed to him that I had a game the next day, and would need him to fix it fast. Benny reassured me that he would have it done in a half hour, no extra charge. When he finished and gave it back to me he told me that if his repair broke to just come back in, and he would take care of it. It ended up breaking again and he repaired it for free. It was good to know that he will stick to his word. Overall, it was a good experience, and I left happy with a repaired glove. read more
