I have been a customer for way over 25 Years! I had an issue with a tire noise! I was told that the was loose tire! They said it would cost me $89.00, When I got it back! not only did he over charged me! He said I had to pay for a diagnostic fee! One of the most poorly run stations, especially after the owner died. Used to have decent mechanics, which have left. Too many attitudes among remainder of staff. Oil changes even during the good times took forever, so we found a 15 min oil change place a mile away. How sweet. These guys here are all so helpful, honest and fair. I came across Ben's Service Center because I needed to have an Intoxalock device installed in my car but they've been taking care of all my car needs since then. My last visit I was especially happy and that's why I'm writing this review now. My car battery went bad and it was less than 2yrs old. Jay worked on my car right away. Afterward he told me I should call the manufacturer (interstate) to see if they'd refund me for the battery because it was a 5yr battery. John went above and beyond and made that phone call for me and I ended up only having to pay for labor charges and not the cost of another battery What mechanic does that?! These guys are always looking out for me! As a female (who loves her car and a huge skeptic to mechanics) it's relieving to know my car and wallet are in good hands. Walked in to get gas inside and the man behind the counter was extremely rude! No good afternoon nothing he just said your gonna have to wait to get gas we're changing shifts it's going to be about 15-20 mins. You would think being in customer service you would be a little nicer to people that are going to spend money in your store. As a retail manager that isn't how I would want any of my employees speaking to potential customers. I have always come to this shell station for my gas because almost all the times I've come here have been a pleasant experience but the last few times I've come here the employees have been super rude and have an attitude to have to help customers. Bens shell station has always been my go to but I'm going to find a place with pleasant employees that aren't so rude. read more

2nd try. Still not great. I took my daughters car in for an oil change 4 months ago. You need an appointment for an oil change here. Fair enough. Probably means they'll be ready and fast. No. Told them I'd wait. After waiting 40 minutes I was called to the desk and asked if I could come back another time. I said no, if they'd asked me when I showed up (early) I would have been happy to oblige, but since I'd waited 40 minutes already, just do it! They weren't happy. Me neither. Today I made an appointment for my car's oil change. Arrived 5 minutes early. Told them I'd wait. After 40 minutes asked if it was done. Hadn't been taken in yet. So I asked for the keys and left. In short. Not "Jiffy Lube". Would advise against this place for oil changes. Can't comment on other services. Probably good for gas. read more

Yesterday, A friend and I were on a road trip to shop and visit old stomping grounds. We stopped into Ben's to use the rest room. I went inside and was surprised the man said, "It's unlocked." I live in Stamford its Urban. We lock everything. The restroom was clean, decorative rather serene. Gentle reminder over the commode for gents and ladies. It's rare to find the kind of welcome and hospitality I did at this stop. As wealthy and opulent Stamford is becoming; I felt special and tended to by Ben and Andrea Santamauro. If you need a rest break in that neck of the woods check 'em out. They are a full service auto shop-emissions testing, Harley Davidson service, convenience store and sell lottery tickets too. Even though we met on bad terms (I was towed for registration issues) this shop and all the guys here were incredibly helpful and very trust worthy, I took my car back with a big issue. I felt it was my duty to write this review, because it is a legitimate review to balance a bunch of suspicious ones that all follow a similar formula that sounds more like advertising than actual customer experiences. I stopped in to have a problem with my acceleration checked out. I explained in detail to BOBBY (see, I can call out names in all caps too) what was going on, and he smilingly told me he'd investigate the problem when I brought the car in early the next morning. He would also perform some routine maintenance and give the car the once-over. When I arrived for my appointment, I told him he could have the vehicle all day but that if there was anything extensive that had to be done it would have to wait, as I had an important, unavoidable obligation the next day. I got a call from him 6 hours later when he finally got around to my car and he said the problem hadn't "reared its ugly head" on the test drive but that he would replace the spark plugs as planned and that I should pick up the car at 5. While I was on the way there I got a call from him asking specifics of the problem I'd complained about, which made it immediately clear he'd paid no attention when I explained why I'd come in. At this point he concluded that he'd diagnosed the problem and told me what it would take to fix it...tomorrow. When I objected, he pulled out the age-old mechanic's mantra: "I can't let you drive it like this." Just like that, my car was a hostage. I had to rent a car the next day to get to my other appointment and returned the next afternoon to pick up my car, since Bobby had called just after I left in the morning saying it was done. He charged me more for the parts than even the dealer's list and explained that as "better after-market parts", though I couldn't find a single online listing with a price that high. The worst, though, was that he'd waited 6 hours after my appointment to start on my car, then left for home to complete what was a pretty quick repair the next morning. Had he done it when he was supposed to--or listened to my initial complaint--it could have been done the same day instead of me having to scramble to rent a car and pay $90 on top of the $1000 he (over)charged me for his work. When I got home, I noted that he'd lost the valve stem caps on my rear wheels after replacing the brakes--a minor detail, to be sure, but enough to make me question his attention to detail for things that mattered. I found out a couple months later when I learned that two motor mounts had gone missing and a third sheared off...which clearly hadn't happened overnight. I guess I asked too much requesting the once-over. Bottom line: untrustworthy, overpriced, and definitely not a 5-star shop. read more

Our car broke down in Orange Connecticut and I had no idea where to bring it. Luckily I looked at yelp and found great reviews because I was extremely happy with the service I received. Jason was very friendly and extremely helpful. He tried to determine what was wrong by replacing the starter and then taking it back out because that was not the problem and he found that the engine was blown. It turns out I had an engine recall and it has since been replaced! If I have car trouble again I will definitely be visiting these guys! read more

I couldn't have asked for better service here! As a girl, I know nothing about cars and while driving home at 415 on a Monday I heard a loud knocking noise and my car began to shake. One quick phone call and the owner had me come in right away. He was so kind-it ended up being a loose wheel, but he had me come in basically a half hour before they closed and was just so nice! I am writing a review of Ben's Service Station (Shell) and in particular of ERNIE who has been my mechanic for the past ten years. I will come to the point: I have never met a professional in any area who is as dependably honest and competent as Ernie. Every bit of work that he has performed for me has turned out perfectly and I never, ever, had a sense that work was performed which wasn't absolutely necessary or that I was charged anything but fairly (often better than fairly). Ernie has also brought my car back from the dead on more than one occasion. Most recently I was forced to drive a distance without sufficient anti - freeze. The car was beyond overheated and barely drivable. I thought it was a goner. Ernie managed to salvage it, exactly the level of performance I have come to expect from Ernie. I am writing this specifically due to my last appointment and my interaction with Val (who I now request), who was the mechanic working on my vehicle. He went out of his way to give me all my options with a repair that could have been very very costly, and he could have recommended something I really did not need at that time. Let me first state,contrary to another reviewers opinion-THIS REVIEW IS REAL and have been to Bens Service Center and have dealt with Jay Hillman as my mechanic ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS..I recently went down with a secondary car which I used to travel three states..The vehicle shut off.in downtown New haven AND Had to be towed into Bens for diagnostic analysis.Jay immediately put diagnostic meters on car and stated the battery was dead--probably caused by a defective alternator. The battery was less than a year old-(and warranteed)and was draining it..JAY HILLMAN fixed my problem WITHIN THE HOUR.CHARGED ME 120.00 TO INSTALL BOTH and absolutely did not upsell me on any other items car probably could use/.Im a firm believer of preventive maintence and Jay had saved me days of a rental with expert service..He is courteous,conscientious and attacks the problem.Tina-the front counter personnel-was nothing short of professional..The aspect of reviews is NOT TO MAKE IT PERSONAL-iTS JUST BUSINESS..If I would have had any issue with shop-John Moore would have handled it and resolved..FACT. read more

I have been really happy with the work done on my car at Ben's Shell Service Center. I've taken my car to other mechanics in CT and have been treated well, but the repairs the other mechanics did (replacing warped rotors, repairing the exhaust pipe) didn't last very long. I accepted that as the result of usual wear-and-tear and part of routine maintenance-- but I shouldn't have. Ever since I have brought my car to Ben's Service Center, my car has needed less maintenance, and the repairs have lasted much longer. I first went to Ben's to get an emissions test -- quickest emissions test of my life! Then I went to get an oil change. Then I went because I had a flat tire (which they patched up free of charge). Then I needed to get a serpentine belt replaced, then brake pads. Every single time they have been gracious, they have done the work extremely quickly, and they have charged me far less than other places (less than half the quoted prices of valvoline, and cheaper than the relatively reliable mechanic I've gone to in the past).
