Mike is a sweetheart- first time here today - and on a busy day, he filled my tires and helped calibrated my car after so that the 'low pressure' sign definitely went off - all in less than 15 mins and he didn't charge me anything. I was having trouble with my battery where it would not hold a charge. Triple A replaced the battery twice before testing my alternator. I got on the phone with John, who walked me through buying my own alternator that he replaced. Two weeks later, my battery had issues again where the ground wire had come lose (probably from replacing the batter several times). John spent a half our with my car in the cold diagnosing and fixing the issue even though it had nothing to do with the alternator replacement. He helped me out immediately even though it was clear he had many other vehicles to finish working on that day. He refused to accept any payment. It is so rare you find honest mechanics who just try to help you. It was not the first time I've had a positive experience with Mike's Auto and it is this kind of service that makes me come back even though I've moved again hour away from Hamden. read more

My fiancé and I did a lot of research on mechanics in the New Haven area, and we decided on Mike's Auto Clinic because they were recommended from Yale's student handbook. Also, we called multiple shops and this one was the most reasonable in cost estimates. Out of all the shops we called, John was the most helpful and sincere over the phone. Most importantly, John listened very carefully to our questions, concerns, and ideas. We told John that our car smelled like gasoline and that we needed to find and fix the possible leak. Unlike other shops, John expressed concerned about gasoline-related hazards and our safety. Also, Carlos was nice to us and helped us set an appointment. So after setting an appointment, we brought our car in the morning and met John. John treated us like family from the start. He was very friendly and honest. Right away, he looked under the hood and explained to us what the problem was. He was patient with us and described fully what our issue was and what are options were. We needed to replace the Fuel Regulator. John tried to make it cost-effective for us and gave us a reasonable price. Although they had to order the part from Bridgeport, John got it quickly and worked on our car promptly. Our car issue was resolved and we are extremely happy! They've recently changed their policy to have separate cash/credit prices. While this does bother me, it's not like it was unexpected, since virtually every gas station is doing it now. They are still a convenient location, and the cash price is still good, so they still have that going for them. I'll either have to find another station, or start carrying cash and add some inconvenience to my life. read more

John and the guys over at Mike's has been taking care of my car for a while now since I moved to Hamden in 2012. I trust their judgement to tell me what I need - and more importantly - what I *don't* need to do to take care of my 2002 Echo with 150k miles. They do a good job of getting me in and out of the shop on schedule, and I happen to live close enough that I can walk to and from the shop to pick it up after major service. Car wouldn't start, AAA came and told me I had to replace my starter. Bought a starter and asked Mike's to replace it for me. The tested the system first and found it was just a dead battery. Could have easily replaced my starter and then told me it was a dead battery. Honest people and worked on my car in a timely manner. Not a happy customer here. My experience with Mike's clinic left me with the conclusion that the owner, Mike, is one unethical and greedy person who values a few bucks in extra profit more than treating the customer fairly. I brought my car in for an optional repair of the coolant system which had a very slow leak but could have been fine for months or years according to the mechanic diagnosis I got . We were planning to trade in the car in just a few months as we were going to need a bigger car.. so we could have easily gone without making that repair. I told Mike my consideration to do the repairs if his estimate would be within the maximum I could pay ( which was based on average cost of this particular repair I found online, with parts, etc included). We agreed on particular amount ( and I left with all the cost details in writing)... but when I went to pick up my car the bill was almost twice that! He explained it by pricey "special" Toyota coolant he bough, the margin his shop took on the part the ordered ( even though I has asked if he would like me to bring the part in prior to that and he said it didn't matter, they could order it for me- just forgot to mention what it would cost me)..etc.. etc. I thought it was very unethical considering the fact that we agreed on a certain amount and had he called me with a new estimate I would not go through with this repair. I was pregnant and uninsured at the time, with lots of medical expenses to pay, so lining Mike's pockets with a couple of extra hundred bucks was a significant hardship. read more

John's service is professional and prompt, his staff is very friendly, and his rates are reasonable as well. His location in Hamden is very convenient to East Rock and close enough to Yale University where I can easily drop off my vehicle before work and pick it up after hours at the gas station, even when the workshop is closed.
