During more than 3 hours of operation Dr. Gutow installed a metal plate and about 11 screws to restructure the shuttered bone and realign the joint. 8 weeks post the operation, the healing process was swift, the recovery was absolutely exceptional. I regained already about 90% of the motion on the injured joint and the joint and bone pains are vanishing fast. When I spoke with my massage therapist and osteopath about the exercises she had me do, they said they didn't make sense given my issues. I asked her to call my physical therapist where I used to live to find out what she did. That never happened over the course of a month. She did speak to my pelvic floor Physcial therapist but then said she wanted to have me do exercises I know the pelvic floor pt doesn't allow me to do yet. It is like she came up with a sense very quickly of my problem and a treatment plan without looking much at my records or consulting with the rest of my team. My case is very complex, and she didn't take that into consideration. I became worse over time except when seeing someone else who said my issue was something else and gave different treatment. Pt was resistant though and wouldn't alter course. Also my sunglasses were stollen by the tech. I had them when I came in, and then after I did stim and heat, they were gone. The tech asked if they were "expensive." Seriously!?!? If your issue is simple and you need a place that takes insurance, they can probably help you. But they certainly didn't me.

I picked Physiotherapy Associates (I think they their name is also BAK) because of proximity, but perhaps I was lucky because I can't recommend the care I received higher. They have a clean, open office with a lot of room. They've recently done some remodeling and it added to the space. The equipment was in good shape, and they have a changing room if you need it. Ryan Napeek was my therapist, and Frank and Zack helped with the exercises. Ryan was always on time, was thorough in preparing for my sessions, and was careful to follow the surgeon's instructions. Everyone will tell you PT stands for 'pain and torture', and it does hurt a bit, but honestly not as much as everyone said it would. Ryan made sure to monitor my progress and not do anything that would potentially damage the repair. He was incremental and careful during range of motion exercises, and not to mention a lot of fun to talk to (which helps when you need something to take your mind off of your current activity). Frank and Zack make sure you do your exercises, and they are nice about it. The electric stimulation machine is pretty cool, I used it for the first couple of visits but after a while you don't need it. I just had my four month follow up, and the surgeon said, 'I can tell you now, but after your surgery I didn't expect you to recover as well as you did; the tear in your labrum was quite serious.' Kind of a shock to hear that, but as my range of motion is 90% with signs of getting better, I can only assume it was largely because of the quality of the surgeon, but also because of the quality of the physical therapy.

STAR Physical Therapy is a great place for PT. I first went there in around 2014, when I had a…read moresmall break in my elbow. I was treated about 3 months, and by the end, my elbow was fully back to its prior functioning. When I needed to obtain PT in early 2020, for a 9-12 month rehab schedule following knee surgery (ACL + cartilage + meniscus all repaired), I naturally considered STAR. I'm 6 months into the PT rehab, and the recovery is going very well, thanks in large part to the professionals at STAR. They have 4-5 PTs on staff, plus two junior (non-PT) staff members for each shift. The facility if fairly large. There is a dedicated cardio area. There is a weight room area. There is a room with 4-5 patient tables, where they work on the patent with massage, "cupping", graston tools, or other treatments. And there is a large room for patients to receive pre-treatment heat, and post-treatment ice and/or stim. The staff is extraordinarily friendly, engaging in banter during the session and making the session fly by with chit chat. Don't get me wrong - as the name suggests (STAR = strength training and recovery), they work you hard. While the treatment can be challenging, it pays dividends in terms of quick, lasting recovery. During Covid, STAR stayed open, as PT is considered an essential service. I was grateful for that, given the long recovery road I was facing. The moment the Covid shutdown started, STAR quickly pivoted in order to comply. To promote cleanliness and physical distancing, they drastically reduced the number of patients being seen at any moment, and implemented a rigorous cleaning regimen. Everything that someone touches is immediately cleaned after the exercise is finished. One of the 2 junior staff members is dedicated to just cleaning - watching to see when each patient is done with a piece of equipment, and then immediately cleaning it. And masks are enforced. The staff is professional, knows their stuff, and provides excellent physical therapy. While I hope I never need PT again, if I do, I will certainly return to STAR.

At the beginning when they do the massage stuff - mine wasn't even paying attention to me - instead, chit-chatting the whole time with another employee 3. They give you some exercises to do while there and then leave you alone so no one is watching form, etc. 4. I had to ask for home exercises. I was told "just do what we did here". I had to ask again for a print-out of the exercises and be seemed surprised to be asked that. 5. After two sessions I went from having a simple issue of pain upon certain movements to greatly reduced shoulder function. Stay Away.

As other reviewers have said, paitents typically see the physical therapist only for about 15 minutes in a one hour appointment, the rest being spent doing exercises with assistants. But the cost of $190 is correspondingly less than most physical therapists charge for a full hour, so a course of therapy is more manageable cost.
