Great food at reasonable prices! Sadlack's original menu, plus a bunch more, including fried foods and burgers! But I have a complaint. Used to be fun to play Bingo on Mondays. However, the number caller does not always enunciate clearly, and many people ask her to repeat. Last Monday someone thought she said 59, when the number was actually 69. This was on the money game where my partner and I had paid $10 for 10 Bingo cards. The pot was ~$113. And the announcer gave the pot to the woman that did not have the right number! I felt ripped off. And I was probably not the only one...I had two four in a row, waiting on a 5th, all the right numbers, yet my chance to win was taken away by a non-winning card. Had lunch at the new location and still as good as ever.....still a very unassuming answer casual place that delivers great sandwiches .....i had the Andy, which had a thick juicy piece of fried chicken, slaw, sauce etc......my daughter had a special sandwich of the day which had ham, pineapple, chilis, Monterey Jack cheese, grilled on good sliced bread. There are a couple of these sort of spots in downtown Raleigh that are open for lunch and have full bar service. That's interesting and useful for folks who maybe don't have to go back to work. But me? I want lunch and I want to go back to work and be sober enough to be effective. So while Berkeley Cafe is great for late drinks, it's also good for burgers and such at lunch time. I had a simple enough Caesar salad with chicken and it was very good. Maybe a little heavy on dressing but a good portion and I enjoyed it. My friends, hear me out. This is one of the last real dive bars in Raleigh. Their music is AMAAZING! Drinks are priced like it's not the recession. Food is incredible!!!! Berkeley Cafe is definitely a spot that is all about their live music (I agree with other reviews on that). Mom and I walked in for dinner and grabbed two seats at the bar. The beer special was for the White Street Kolsch, awesome. For food, I ordered the Veggie Pumper with sweet potato fries and Mom ordered the Philly Steak and Cheese with fries and we split an order of the Creamy Chicken Veggie Soup. Berkeley Cafe is really about its live music but I couldn't resist visiting for lunch. Run by the folks who used to own Sadlack's, I had fond memories of my meals there and stopped in. Berkeley Cafe is definitely an interesting venue for music and the lunch counter is super spiffy. Nice polished wood bar top and a small selection of grill items, sandwiches and of course, their popular sweet tater tots. I go for the burger with sweet tots and apple dipping sauce. Food takes 10 - 15 minutes and they use good toppings here. But the burger's a bit small and when the lunch goes for $12 with a drink, it just doesn't feel like that good a value. But still, I enjoyed my meal and you can't beat sweet tater tots! I'd have to guess that the Berkeley Cafe is a better visit if you're here for the live music AND the food. But for a quick lunch visit, it still hits the spot... read more

I miss Sadlack's. I read where Berkeley Cafe was serving some of Sadlack's sandwiches and since I've been having sandwich withdrawals since Sadlack's closed I figured I'd give them a try and I'm glad I did! I've been eating Dr. Frank Specials since the late '70's so I'm pretty much an expert on the dang things. This place is simple but enjoyable. Don't come here expecting corporate foodchain type service. Think local neighborhood establishment. Very down to earth yet warm and attentive staff. They are very laid back in the customer service style. It could almost be perceived as unprofessional. But I think it gives it character. Its nice to feel like your at a friends house sometimes. Also the waiter was extremely attentive and sociable with me but also did not over impose. Often I get overlooked in favor of regulars in local bars like this. I was very appreciative that even though everyone probably knew each other, I was equally serviced. The Kung Pao cauliflower was really savory and flavorful. I wish there was a little less sauce but overall a good experience. They did have a variety of vegetarian options. My only 'wish they had' is more thought to ensuring vegetarian options have plant based protein so that it is filling. Will try this place again. read more

Came here on a Sunday night for some dinner and to listen to the band playing. Pros: no cover, $2 domestic bottle special on Sundays, house made chips rock Cons: limited table seating, have to walk through the performing band to get to the bathroom Aside from the aforementioned house made chips, the food was mediocre, but it was decently inexpensive, so we got what we were expecting. At first glance, the Berkeley Cafe does not seem appealing. I would consider it a dive bar in downtown Raleigh. I usually come here for lunch to order a chicken Caesar salad. This is one of my favorite dishes here because I love their creamy Caesar dressing, probably some of the best in the area. The croutons they use for the salad are always different but that doesn't bother me. The taste of the salad makes up for it. The downside to this place is that service is not always consistent. I usually order take out because once this place gets busy, you don't know when you'll be leaving or getting any type of attention from the waitress. The best time to come here is before lunch rush or mid afternoon. While I love the Caesar salad here, their burgers are small and one time one of my co workers got a burnt bun. There's also some items on the menu that can only be ordered for dinner. The beer selection is decent and there's a variety of sandwiches on the menu so I wouldn't completely turn this place down. read more

Great lunch spot with friendly service. I had a turkey sandwich, served hot on marbled rye with lettuce, tomato, mustard, banana peppers, and I forget what else. It was pretty delicious, though. I like the ambiance: Brick walls, simple, order-at-the-counter, small, convenient to people who work downtown. I took mine to go, but one could easily and comfortably stay there. This little strip of street beneath Nash Square is often forgotten, but offers a nice little location. I could easily see ordering a sandwich during nice, warm days and taking it across the street to eat on a bench in the park. (Nice warm days? Who am I kidding? Sadlack's famous sandwiches in a Raleigh hole-in-the-wall. Berkeley is next to Raleigh's oft-forgotten Nash Square, on a strip of West Martin that used to be a little more active. I was a little sad when Berkeley closed off their larger room. That was one of the better Hopscotch Music Fest venues and was a nice bridge between CAM and King's. Now Berkeley is left with a smaller space, with a patio out back. When you walk in for lunch, you will place your order at the counter after looking at a menu that will be very familiar for anyone that went to NC State University. Make sure to have cash on-hand since they don't take cards. I ordered the Italian sub aka Dr. Frank's Special. I went with chips on the side. But, I'm not a sweet potato fan. The sweet potato tots are apparently the go-to side for your sandwich. On a quiet Monday, I expected a bit faster service for my group of coworkers. Our sandwiches came out over the span of what seemed like 10 minutes. But, in the end, Berkeley has made it into my lunch rotation and I'm looking forward to trying more of the sandwiches that my Wolfpack friends have enjoyed for years. read more

I have been doing a Bitcoin meetup ever Thursday for over a year. The staff is always friendly and accommodating to our group. Live music is almost every Thursday evening. The bands are always good. The Berkeley is a pretty sweet little place. I dig the atmosphere more than anything, really. I've only been there a few times, whenever there's an Improv show, and think it's definitely a great venue. What I love is that it feels like two different places. Not sure what would make this place worth coming back for as it was one of the more disappointing meals I've had in a while, didn't have a good ambience, and service was good but nothing special. We had the chef salad and turkey sandwich- the avocado we added for $1 was almost nonexistent and the "chipotle ranch" tasted a lot like thousand island. My friend and I came here for a small bite this afternoon. The service was friendly and the nachos were delicious. We found a HUGE problem with the cleanliness, however. This place is just nasty. We watched the blonde female cook with a black apron, handle raw chicken with her bare hands, rinse her hands WITHOUT soap for a maximum of 3 seconds then continue to plate a finished quesadilla and serve it.
