If you're looking for a fun and interesting brunch spot, this is a great option in the East Bay. Heard a lot about this place online so I wanted to check it out. Starting with parking, this restaurant is on a major street in Berkeley so parking may be hard to come by. It will be metered of course, so I highly recommend checking the side streets as there is free 2-hour parking. Just a short walk around the block was worth not paying for the meter. Came in on a Saturday late morning around 11:15am and got sat right away surprisingly, as we were expecting a wait for Brunch but guess we got lucky, granted there were only 2 of us. If you plan to come with a bigger group, I suggest coming early. Here is what we ordered: - Ube Latte (Iced): 8/10. Loved the flavor of the latte as it does have a nice ube flavor which was not overly sweet. I am not sure if they use fresh ube, powder or puree, but there were some gritty ube bits/puple, or something like that, in the drink that I did not care for. I had to let the drink sit so the bits would settle at the bottom of the glass before proceeding to drink it. My boyfriend didn't mind it at all and actually enjoyed it. Besides from that I still enjoyed the drink. - Lychee Ice Tea: 8/10. Refreshing drink! Can definitely taste the lychee in the drink. You can tell the sweetness comes from the lychee syrup. Definitely on the sweeter side. - Millionaire's Bacon: 5/10. Not bad but not the best we have had from all the other sister restaurants. Personally, the Millionaire's Bacon at Surisan is way better and they have other flavor options. The bacon came out room temp. Nothing special about it here, but again not bad either. - Korean F.C. Benedict: 8/10. Really enjoyed this dish! Very flavorful with the gochujung hollandaise, egg was poached to perfection, and the chicken was so moist and tender on the inside (dark meat) but the exterior was crunchy. It came with a side of potatoes which were also heavenly. The outside have a nice crisp to them but the potatoes were so soft on the inside. - Waffle and Korean F.C.: 9/10. The BF got this and he loved it! Said the chicken was tender, moist, flavorful and crispy on the outside. The syrup that comes with it was very unique to him. Had a night hint of spice. The waffle was crispy and not overly heavy or dense. The inside was fluffy. The fruit was fresh and ripe. - Lemon Ricotta Pancakes: 9/10. This was honestly my favorite! I loved how light the pancakes were. The lemon flavor of the pancake was not overpowering at all! I have had lemon ricotta pancakes at other establishments and they usually just douse their pancakes with a lemon ricotta syrup/frosting so it can be too sweet but the lemon ricotta is mixed in the pancake so it has the best soft texture on the inside and had the right amount of sweetness. Honestly didn't even need to use the side syrup it came with. It was topped with powder sugar and fresh fruit as well which was the best addition to the pancakes. As for the ambiance, it is a casual establishment with nice decor and vibes. It was clean inside, good music, and not overly loud. The waitresses and host were kind and attentive. Berkeley Social Club is a must try if you are ever in Berkeley! They serve Korean fushion dishes, specializing in brunch and they have bottomless mimosas. It does get busy here especially during peak hours so make sure to make a reservation on Yelp beforehand to avoid waiting. They are most well known for their millionaire's bacon - thick cut of bacon with hints of sweetness and spiciness, so we decided to try their blackstone benedict and their waffles & korean fried chicken. The blackstone benedict was super delicious. The eggs were poached perfectly and their lemon hollandaise paired perfectly with the tender millionaire's bacon. It also comes with potatoes which were so crispy and seasoned so well. Their waffles & kfc is perfect if you can't decide between a savory or sweet brunch. I remembered to take photos while coming here for a Galentine's Day brunch. Tip: Definitely try to get here by 10am because the wait time would be minimal but your entire party needs to be here. Although we discussed brunch, I couldn't hold off after seeing there dinner menu also had some really interesting options. So I offered it as an option to a friend for a scheduled Tuesday night dinner. The service was fine. We had a newer server who seemed to be in training. His trainer was very well informed. I think I'd feel different about the experience of when approaching the table, the trainer would have introduced themselves and the training situation. At first it was just the guy, then the woman came up a bit later and kind of confused us. Anyway, that incident was quickly forgotten at the introduction of my cocktail and then THE FOOD! Given how popular this place is, i was pleasantly surprised the wait wasn't too long. We stopped by Sunday morning around 11 and it was only a 5 min wait. We got the BSC scramble which had the most juicy bacon and delicious vegetables to balance out the bacon. We also got the blueberry stuffed French toast. The ambiance at Berkeley Social Club is undeniably good. It's got ample lighting, a large dining room, and enough chatter in the background to engage your senses. When it comes to food, their offerings are basic breakfast food at premium prices. The most serious critique we have is probably their Ahi Benedict. When we think of Ahi, we think of Ahi poke with raw tuna, salad, and light soy-based dressing. Instead of preparing it in the traditional way, their Ahi is marinated in spicy Korean pepper sauce and then seared. It's disappointing to prepare Ahi tuna this way and it was incredibly nasty. Another critique that we have is with them running out of the Dutch pancake in the middle of the day. Dutch pancake is made with the same ingredients as ordinary pancake, just prepared in a cast iron pan. Since we saw the servers serve ordinary pancakes to other tables around us, we guess they just ran out of cast iron pans to prepare it Dutch style. This was disappointing and should not happen at a restaurant of this caliber. Due to average quality food, overprice menu, and difficulty with parking, I will only recommend this restaurant if you are in need of something artisanal. **Updated 12/8/22 in response to owner's comment I have no problem with whichever way you prepare the Ahi. However, you need to provide full disclosure to the customer on the menu on how it's prepared. The menu clearly states that the Ahi Benedict uses "Ahi Poke." When you sear the tuna and rub it with Gochujang, that is no longer poke style and incredibly misleading for customers. Please use clearer language on the menu. read more

Another location let's check the box!!! I've set myself on a wild goose chase to try all of Steven Chois dining experiences, and i present the third location... Berkeley social club! I'm a big fan of the atmosphere of this place, with a full bar. Food is unmatchable at his restaurants. We ordered the appetizer sampler, short rib salad, Bulgogi nachos, G. I. Fried rice, and the Bsc pot! My favorite has to be the BSC pot which is the pork belly marinated over night. The pork belly was so tender when you cut it, it's almost as if it's fish. The rice is sweet and salty with a nice crunch from the bottom of the pan. The appetizer flight had the perfect variety of their specialties and I loved the KFC chicken. Juicy, aromatic, and crunchy! The shrimp sticks are amazing as well. If you need to get your greens in get the salad!!! Salads taste fresh and the dressing is to die for. My friend said she gets an itchy throat when veggies are organic and the salad did just that for her. They have a great variety of drinks, and also offer happy hour from 5-6pm.
