Excellent space to hear a show; varied genres presented. The balcony is super sloped, and if you're in upper balcony the stage will seems sort of small, but the acoustics is still good. There is minimal lobby area, so the foot traffic for a crowded show is heavy. read more

Came here for the first time last night (Yamato Japanese Drummers). I didn't expect the stage and seating area to be that small, but it got the job done. The Yamato drummers were awesome and their performance really fires you up! Also love the comedy bits they added to their show without actually talking to the audience. The performance was about 1.5 hrs long and was told our ticket prices were only a fraction of getting the drummers here. The sponsors help subsidize the show. read more

I saw an excellent performance watching West Side Story. The theater itself is fairly large and the stage is little smaller than I expected especially if there is a musical requiring a lot of dance routines. West Side Story has a lot of dancing and although the performance was fantastic, I don't think the stage accommodated the amount of people dancing on stage. They made it work though. I just feel that the theater had a lot seats. The system and acoustics we're fine. I could hear everything... including some afrobeat rehearsal next door. I attended a Bryan Adams concert here last weekend and really didn't appreciate how rude and bossy the staff was. They were also selectively targeting people to harass while easily ignoring the ones they might need to work to enforce rules on. I appreciate the policy of entering/leaving only in-between songs, not during, but really, you can communicate the same politely. In general, I understand the no photo policy for flash reasons, but when the artist himself is saying this is a good time and bidding adieu, there's really no reason for staff to review every photo on people's iPhone and delete them! B.A. also asked people to come up to the front when he was almost done with the concert because he wanted to see his audience/fans - one aisle was allowed while the other aisle had "house rules" that the artist had broken...!? Finally, B.A. requested lights on to see his audience - no one cared for his request. I don't know if some people find "rules" for the sake of "rules" a good thing, but a venue that can't respect the performer or his audience can't really earn too many stars in my Yelp review... Granted, this venue is small and intimate, however the poor lighting and poor acoustics made it less than enjoyable experience. read more

If I could give 2.5 stars, I would. It wasn't terrible, but my issue with the place was such that I can't call it ok. We saw Glen Hansard here last night and aside from a weird feedback issue, the sound was great- nice balance up in the balcony where we were. We could see ok, but I'm wondering how well the people behind us could. The venue runs narrow instead of tall. The one thing I take issue with is the seating. I cannot speak for the floor seats, but the balcony was awful. The seats themselves were cushy enough, though I felt like the back of the chair was pushing me forward and I had to work hard to sit up straight. No, the major issue was with legroom. My husband and I were sitting in the first row of the second balcony and thank god there was no one in front of us so he could swing a leg over the bar. I am only 5'3" and I was uncomfortable!! I felt like I was on a plane. I was incredibly uncomfortable during the show. I started getting really restless because I couldn't move my legs much. It wasn't fun. Really, if they ever renovate this place, they need to take out at least one row and space the seating better. I can't imagine how tall folks must feel!! If I ever want to see someone here, I will have to spring for orchestra-level seats since the reviews here don't seem to mention them as problematic. Beware!! read more

I too saw Jim Gaffigan here. Driving in - not a good idea. We managed to get the last spot in the expensive lot across the street. Getting in wasn't too hard, as we had our tickets in advance. I just don't think this is the place to book comedy acts. Jim was hilarious as usual, but I think we lost some of the funny, since we were so far back that we couldn't see his face. It kind of felt like looking into someone's house from the sidewalk to watch their television. Just with sound. And some guy kicking you in the back repeatedly. read more

ONE stall in the women's bathroom. You've gotta be KIDDING me. And with this baby face (studies show, those with baby faces are approached more) .. I can't stand in line without being bothered. I'm sorry peeps.. I've got one thing on my mind right now.. and although I'd really love to hear the story about how you've traveled all the way from Florida to see this person for the 9th time.. Florida is surrounded by water.. and I need to pee. BAHHH... Damn you mind and your weird train of thought. Other than that. I dig this venue. Although, I've only been here to see stand up/comedy shows (and made the likes of Demetri Martin and Daniel Tosh feel super awkward.. Demetri thought I was asking him to take a picture of me and Leo Allen when I actually wanted a picture with him.. and I put Daniel Tosh on the spot by asking him to make a cell phone video for my engaged friends. What?). The sound was great so I assume musical ventures would feel the same. It kind of reminds me of some dude's rec room with its woodish paneling. A really really large rec room...but you know. With music shows, you wouldn't really be able to dance in your seat. The seats aren't tiny, but you can't go all Studio 54 in your row with the space. There is always the side to side mellow rock out though. Just a suggestion. 4 stars for being just a couple minutes from the T and not falling apart (like some performance spaces in Boston)! Once they get at least 2 stalls in the ladies room.. they'll be 5 stars! read more

Had a very nice time at the Grace Kelly concert tonight. Lovely venue, very comfortable, and great acoustics. The drawback of this venue are the older security people. They have POWER ISSUES. I went to join a friend of mine in line and I got yelled at even though she was holding a place for me and she was getting out of line. Next, with an hours drive, we walked out the door and immediately returned to use the bathrooms as we are older and we were accosted at the door saying there was no re-admittance even though the show was already complete and all we wanted to do was use the facilities. VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE...... They made us feel like criminals for having to use the restroom. It is not like we were young drunken troublemakers. We just wanted to make sure we could make it home. THERE WAS NO NEED FOR ANY OF THAT...... and it ruined a very nice evening..... Also 3 hours and not as much as a bottle of water for anyone.... Change your business model and you can make a few more bucks..... read more

After seeing Pink Martini here last night I have few thoughts on the venue: 1. Seems like the same folks that design seats for the airlines and torture devices for the CIA are also in the theater seating business. If you are 5 ft tall or less you may not be too miserable...for everyone else; you are toast. 2. Serious issues with the amount of restrooms. Even the guys were standing in line. Most of us to not do bathroom lines well; we have no practice at it nor tolerance for it. For all my complaining it was 10X more problematic for the women. 3. The sound was great but when you are in the top section of the theater seeing the performers is difficult. 4. Staff were polite and helpful. All in all not too bad but for a school of performing arts I would have expected more. read more

My finger is just so so so firmly planted on the pulse of awesome that I saw Sigur Ros here back in 2001 (note- I'm being sarcastic). I really just want to gloat about that for a moment. It was actually a really surreal experience because it was a few weeks after 9/11 and most tours had been cancelled, but no sir, not Sigur Ros, they sucked it up and dealt wih what must've been brutal security checks to come play an astounding show at the Berklee Perfomance Center. I'm not sure if it was them, or the quality of the audio inside the place, but the show was completely overwhelming in the best possible way. I think it was a combination of the two, as I've seen a lot of shows at the BPC, I've seen Sigur Ros way too many times, and nothing has ever matched that performance. I also once saw the Residents here, and listened to the two guys sitting in front of me go on, at length, about how "chicks don't get the Residents". I kind of wanted to kick their chairs but I didn't. As a chick who "gets" the Residents, I had too much dignity for that. In general, especially now that Axis and Avalon have closed, I hope that more bands with a mid sized draw play here, as I really like the venue alot, save for the bathrooms, which are tiny and have epic lines pretty much all the time. I think the only way to avoid the line is to run to the restroom during the headliner...and no one wants to do that. read more

The sound is perfect from every seat. Comfortable seats (unless you are in the last couple of rows which frequently have folding chairs set up to accommodate more guests. And the view is great from most seats as well. I will continue to frequent Berklee Performance Center when musicians I like will be there. read more

Can't believe I haven't spoken of my love for the BPC since I saw one of my top five shows here (The Magnetic Fields). It really is an ideal place to see band. I'd say this, the MFA theater, the B of A Pavilion on a cool summer night, and the Roxy are the top venues in town. But the Berklee is great for that sort of "an evening with ____" type show. There isn't a bad seat in the house, even the balcony is great and, this being Berklee, the acoustics are perfect. There's no dancing but chances are you aren't going to see that sort of band play here anyway. I'm actually hoping that they keep up with their recent trend of booking good stand-up acts as those have been the shows I've seen here lately. Last but not forgotten is that they do a good job of keeping the ticket price reasonable. Stay classy, Berklee Performance Center. read more

I never expect much from a theater; I'm already in a begrudged relationship with a place that sells its tickets through sleazy sites that charge a 4-dollar "convenience" fee to print your own stupid tickets. Whatever. That's the nature of the beast. I can imagine that this is a pretty good spot for student performances, but they don't seem to know how to manage a sold-out show for the general public. Security does bag checks, but on the night I went to see Tim and Eric, they let in two slobbering, stumbling, unbelievably drunk goblins who, of course, were seated right behind me. Most theaters worth their salt would kick these slobs out before they even wobbled through the security line, but here, they were free to come in and talk over the whole show. It's hard to listen to a comedian when all you can hear is slurred warbling behind you. Of course they don't shut up when you ask them to, and getting people kicked out of a venue means you're going to miss a good chunk of the show while you go tattle. You can't win. So I guess this comes down to the fundamental purpose of a bag check. You don't want people smuggling-in booze and other no-no stuff to get fucked up on while paying customers are just trying to enjoy the show. What about people that come with empty bags, but a brain soaked in liquor? Show them the door. No, not the one to the seats. The exit. I meant the exit. Come on guys. Would I go back? Maybe. I hope this was an isolated event. Though it can't escape one of my trademark rants, it certainly deserves more than one star. That said, the theater is way too narrow, making the acoustics in the back half of the first floor kinda wonky. The incline of the floor is pretty shallow, so god help you seeing anything if you get seated behind a big fella. Buyer take heed, though don't go running to the hills. You could get lucky and have nothing bad happen. I was not lucky, but what I had to deal with was something that could have been avoided entirely with a more diligent staff. read more

Unless you don't care about watching a live act, in which case, sit back and enjoy the okay acoustics. Or bring binoculars. I was so excited to see James Blake last night @ Berklee. His performance was incredible. The venue, however, is pretty stuffy. Blake even mentioned a couple of times that it it was a bit odd that the audience would not stand up. I'm sure the experience was incredibly awkward for him. A girl in front of us was sworn at, scolded by a fellow patron and then kicked out for cheering and dancing... at a concert! Two other girls were told to sit down later in the evening, when dancing to a song. Photos and videos were not allowed during the performance, which I can understand, but I found in incredibly distracting to see ushers literally running around a theater to instruct patrons to stop. Isn't it a bit more distracting (to the performer and patrons) to see people literally running through aisles throughout an entire performance? If dancing and cheering during a concert is not allowed, then rename the theater Bomont Theatre. It was like Footloose (pre Kevin Bacon). I will never come to this venue again. read more

Came here Saturday for Warren Miller's Face Of Winter. There was a huge line to get in, some people were buying tickets still, but we already had ours. I wish they had separate lines for each because no one likes waiting out in the cold when you already have a ticket to get in. It seemed like it was a full house show, with some sign up giveaways, posters and magazines. We were up in the balcony, the seats are very close together not designed with a lot of leg room in mind. Also the numbers on the seats was confusing, it started out single digit but then skipped to the 100's. Also for a venue that hosts lots of shows it was rather surprising they didn't have a snack bar of some kind anywhere. Also not ideal placement of the restrooms, they were right at the entrance to the balcony which made for a nice traffic jam when we were leaving. Maybe a different show would have been better but seeing a film here wasn't an ideal setting. read more

I'd have to say that this is my new fav live venue except for maybe tt's. It's not a rock hard kind of venue with moshpits or anything, but let's face it, I'm getting a tad too old to be elbowed by 21 year olds to get a better view. The acoustics are great and it's a pretty intimate setting with yes, seats (at least when I was there, we were seated). BUT! ladies, there is only one stall in the restroom, it's true! I was told that there was another restroom somewheres but I'm pretty unfamiliar with the space and had been waiting forEVER in my line so I was stubborn and waited, and waited, and waited... read more

I saw the New Pornographers here. They were amazing, but seriously, this venue is weird. Flashback to your high school auditorium. Remember those seats? They're here. The elevated stage? You got it! Being yelled at to keep your crap out of the aisles? That's the BPC in a nutshell. On the other hand, there is something to be said for not having to fight your way through a crowd to see, or to even stand without being moshed. So that puts it smack in the middle - 3 stars. read more

I have seen P.T. and Robert Fripp play here a few times, and i have to say... the sound quality was amazing. This would be expected from a music school. The seats where somewhat comfy, but the style of the seating was kinda bogus... Its really elivated, and steep. The lobby is nice and neat, and the upstairs lobby has a really cool area to stand and talk. The people in this area are, for the most part, really nice and laid back. The best part about this place is the acoustics... just amazing. read more

Love the space, the show was fantastic, but the seats/ambiance need help. Hence, only 4 stars. I'm not asking for any thing fancy, just something more than uncomfortable, torn seats. read more

There have been nothing but unforgettable nights, having attended the Berklee Performance Center for about 3 years for many live performances here. I've gotten to see many Berklee alumni come to do interviews and clinics, such as Alan Silvestri and John Mayer. I've seen powerhouse live performers such as Steven Wilson, Jamie Cullum, Esperanza Spalding and Snarky Puppy. Here's the thing. I've seen similar shows at many theaters, but nothing packs the punch like this theater. I love a setting where I can just sit without distractions and enjoy a show with the best view and sound. I always grab a row K, seat 107 seat when I can, and have ALWAYS been amazed by the amazing sound, the clean stage, and the extremely kind ushers and front of house staff who work here. Keep in mind, many of the staff are students from the school as well. So those stage crew folks you see running on stage preparing the shows? They might have a final exam the next day, and yet you still see them making sure the stage is set and ready for the performers and the audience. This theater is filled with who are dedicated to the live arts and to you, the audience member. I will always find myself coming back to this theater during my time in Boston. If you hear about a show you want to see, and you see that it's taking place at the BPC, grab a ticket immediately. You won't regret it. And believe me when you see and hear just how amazing the theater is during any live performance show. You won't forget it. read more

My husband and I recently visited Berklee to see Pink Martini. It is small and charming venue with comfortable seating (at least in the orchestra area) and awesome acoustics. We could hear all the instruments clearly (which with this band you certainly want to because they are SUPER talented) and you could also see the stage clearly even from further back. Staff was helpful and friendly, bathrooms were clean. The only down fall is they do not serve refreshments and you are not allowed to bring any into the theatre. Which I am sure they are just trying to keep it clean, but for a long show you get thirsty..at least for water! It would be 5 stars if it weren't for that....otherwise I recommend this place for sure!! read more

So many great bands play here and if you're a Berklee student, or attend a school in the ProArts Consortium (These schools are Berklee College of Music, The Boston Architectural College, The Boston Conservatory, Emerson College, Massachusetts College of Art, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts), you can attend shows for 1 dollar. Whether the show is of a well-known band or Berklee students, you're in for an excellent performance. The shows are almost always sold out so buy your tickets early. read more

If you are attending any sort of concert that requires even a bit of quiet in order to appreciate the music -- BEWARE! Tonight I attended a classical concert and the event was ruined by the sound and vibrations from a rock drummer whaling the crap out of a drum kit in one of the College's adjacent practice rooms. My seat was literally shaking. It's embarrassing to find such conditions at what's supposed to be a major music venue in a big city. I paid $100 for 2 tickets so that I could listen to some rock drummer's practice session. read more

Great mid-size performance space and acoustics (but what else would you expect from a famous music school). Beautiful design- wood walls! I saw Idina Menzel here and it sounded great. Yes, the seats are a little tight on the legroom but most theaters in Boston are. Yes, bathrooms are small but again, no theater in Boston has spacious, plentiful bathrooms. i was here for a Warren Miller film. i don;t think this is what typicly plays here. but it was fun. nice spot. the seats SUCK. I'm a larger person, 6 foot 240, so i don't expect every seat i sit it to be too comfertable, but even my GF who is signicantly smaller than me was complaining about how cramped the seats where. i literally had to jam myself into my seat, because i didn;t have enough leg room! needless to say, my knees where killing me soon. oh well, it was worth it. got like 5 buy one get one ski passes! score! read more

The sound in here is great-- as it should be. It's a music school. They book a lot of different acts-- I've seen everyone from jazz pianist Keith Jarret play to NPR's Ira Glass speak. Though the sound quality is wonderful, it the acts they bring in that make this place special. read more

I saw the Bad Plus play here fairly recently. It was the only show I have ever been to there. The sound quality where I was sitting (floor, about 15th row back from stage right) was excellent which was good since they are a jazz band and sound quality is very important unlike standup. I didn't go to the bathroom so I can't comment on the wait. I'm not sure what high schools the people went to that had auditoriums like this one but I sure am jealous! The only complaint I have is that the seats were tight on legroom (I'm 6 foot 3) but that is almost always the case at every sit-down venue I've been to. George Clinton received his honorary doctorate from Berklee; what a magnificent evening! The PFunk Ensemble was wonderful, these young artist took the Funk and made it their own. The icon, the inimitable George Clinton is truly an amazing and charismatic Funk legend! The entire venue was on it's feet as we were served the Pure Funk for 1 hour 45 minutes. This was truly a Funkeliscious great time! I applaud Berklee for honorary a great legend and the ensemble was wonderful I do believe I saw future Funkateers :-) Carlton read more
