Alright, quick take on a round yesterday at Berkleigh. Many different ways to get a tee-time here. Berkleigh is currently on GroupGolfer. They also appear daily on GolfNow and you can also go to their website. www.berkleighgolf.com/golf/tee-times They do the odd thing where if you use their website, you pay the same nuisance fee you would pay if you were using GolfNow and then a few hours before your tee-time, you are emailed a link where you can pre-pay for the round(s). A few random thoughts: One super annoying/lazy thing they do here is none of the holes have their yardage listed (sure, it's on the scorecard but everywhere else in humanity has it on the signage at the tee box) and nowhere can you see a picture of the hole. Admittedly, there are few very doglegs or tricks here and the ones they have compared to some Pocono courses are very tame, but still...... The double downside to this is that the scorecard listed yardage is wrong for a lot of the holes. Playing from the whites, I would say the yardage you're actually playing from is less than the yardage listed on around 1/2 of the holes. As an example, on #6, whites are listed at 182 but the tees are set at around 145. Currently due to the heat, there are no water hazards as everything has dried up. You could walk across the pond on #15 and the creek bed that goes through the property is all hard rocks. Very light patronage for a Friday afternoon. They let us tee off 30 minutes early with no issue. You can load up on freebies big time with a little adventurism into the bushes along 222 on #8 and into the trees on #10 and #11. Easily left +15 balls. Bar none the biggest thing that shocked me about this course were the greens. They are in great shape and are very approachable. Meaning that you don't have putts with triple breaks, massive undulations or dead brown spots. The speed is slightly fast but consistent throughout. A+ on this area. Overall, the course is what it is. Some of the reviews from years gone by are 100% insane. You need to have a big set and your eyes checked to call a course like this a dog track when you're paying $40 for a round. I have played many rounds at many different courses the past two years and there are a lot of places which are in far worse shape at a similar or higher pricing point. Great round today and I have no issue coming back anytime or recommending this place as a nice weekday value play course. read more

I played a round of golf on July 5, 2023 and left behind a tailor-made stealth wedge. The group behind me turned it into the clubhouse. I didn't realize that I lost it until a week later I called the manager and he said that nobody turned in the club, I know it was turned in, but the manager is telling me never received it. Instead of wasting your time and money on courses that are burned out, play Berkleigh Golf Club. It is in outstanding shape from tee to green. Everyone is friendly, the rates are competitive, and you will play a challenging yet fair layout. This was the home of the Betsy King Open for years and is open to the public on Route 222 between Fleetwood and Kutztown. If you consider yourself a golfer, you owe it to yourself to play Berkleigh! read more

It was a dreary early spring day on this first foray to Berkleigh Golf Club, but that didn't diminish the experience. Conditions at this once-private club were up to par, and the course played as if it were early-summer. This coupled with the fact there weren't many people out on a Thursday afternoon made for an uber enjoyable round of golf. Berkleigh, set among the majestic rolling hills of Kutztown PA, was a private club for over 90 years and has been a public facility since 2007. It was designed by Robert White of Carnoustie, Scotland, the first president of the PGA (America). It has a rich history in Berks County and was host to the LPGA Besty King Classic for many years. The club, founded by residents of Berks and Lehigh counties, is easily accessible from both counties; hence the name Berkleigh. In their March 2013 issue, Golfweek Magazine ranked Berkleigh # 8 among "Best Places You Can Play in PA" and in 2012 it was voted "Best Public Course" by readers of the Allentown Morning Call. It's not hard to see why. Even in late-March the course played beautifully. The fairways and greens were especially sharp, and the tee boxes also deserve mentioning. The greens here are fast, as in "country club" fast, so make sure you bring your A-game with the putter. It's a challenging length from the tips (roughly 6800 yards), but the four sets of tees allows players of all skill levels to have an enjoyable round and still use every club in their bag. I played here October 21 and was very disappointed with the condition of the course. We lost at least 4 balls in the fairway due to an overabundance of leaves and at least 4 more balls that were just off the fairway. Every hole was a search and find mission. I will not play here in the near future. read more

Wow! What a DOG track . I was SO disappointed in the shape of the course . The staff should be completely embarrassed at the shape of their white T boxes ! They must have just picked a semi - sloped patch , mowed down the area and stuck tee markers in the ground. Did the maintenance staff get the memmo that the FAIRWAY need to be cut shorter than the rough,??? That was just bizarre, along with the BALES of grass in many of the off the fairway areas . How did anyone find an errant shot BEFORE they cut those areas down ? We had multiple balls land just off the fairway and we practically drove over them after a 2 minute search ( that was w/4 sets of eyes on a ball that was literally 2 feet off the fairway ) There's nothing quite like getting rewarded w/ a shot that is sitting WAY down . The course has such a beautiful layout too. It's definitely NOT the gorgeous tract that I remember from the Betsy King LPGA classic. I know it's public , but this ownership group needs to spend some $$$ on.... SIGNAGE! How about a some sign, ANY sign , w/ a picture of the hole ? They DO have a nice amount sand in all the bunkers , but how about putting a RAKE w/ TEETH in those barely functioning carts? ( ours was just a stick w/ NO head on it )It's obvious that the players whose rakes functioned , had no use for them too. RAKE the friggin' sand!!! A little TLC , like appropriate mowing and placement of tees would go a long way in making this a fun course to play . Even the dogs would boycott running on this tract! DT read more

Played here recently and found the course in good condition Traps were in excellent shape.Tee boxes were a mess and to find one that was level is a challenge. The only other complaint we had was that the senior tees were the exact distance as the ladies tee. Why would a course set up the tees this way? Completely changes the course. .Price was fair and staff was great. read more

I just came back from a professional engineering organization meeting. I came straight from work in Philly to Kutztown with instructions from the event organizer. Aside from the poor instructions and awkward entrance between a local Rte-222 transitioning to an expressway Rte-222, this place was much better than the Williamson Restaurant which the Philadelphia chapter used. First off, I would like to say that this place is not easy to find at all. To get here, I took the Northeast Extension and then Rte-22/I-78 West onto Rte-100 South. Afterwards, I found Rte-222 South and continued a while (I thought it was the road to nowhere). Rte-222 is a mix of expressway and local roads through farmlands and office parks. I made the mistake of taking the Rte-222 expressway and must have passed over this country club. You are better off to take the Kutztown exit just when the expressway start and go onto Main Street through Kutztown Univ which is the local Rte-222 portion. You will then pass the quaint downtown then Kutztown Univ and later it will turn back to an expressway. I swerved into a barn across from an adult shop thinking I missed it. After driving a little further, I saw the Berkleigh Golf sign which said 500 yards ahead. Slowed down and made a sharp narrow right turn into a tall stone archway. Yeah, they don't make it easy to maneuver into here when you are speeding up to keep up with traffic going onto the expressway. Onto the actual food review, the dinner was wonderful. When I got here late, I wasn't expecting much since this was in the middle of nowhere. I expected my $25 dinner to be the same as Williamson. Really I came here for the presentation and see what the Lehigh Valley organization compared to the Philadelphia chapter. Wow, the steak tips were medium well done just the way I like it. The broccoli was perfect and not over done. The mashed potatoes were perfect and not too buttery. The salad was simple and nicely arranged with cherry tomatoes and a splash of oil and vinaigrette. The chocolate cake at the end was rich and good. Overall, I was surprisingly pleased and would come back again to this Lehigh Valley chapter. Fix the damn sand traps !!! You pay 60 bucks and the traps are unplayable. Once I see a change in the trap condition I will revisit my review. The traps are never fluffy , they are hard as asphalt. No fun playing an unplayable trap. read more

Sad to say that this once gem has deteriorated. The greens may not be in too bad of shape, although very very slow, but the fairways are burnt out, sand traps need help and the tee boxes are horrendous. If you are just taking of the sport, good place to start. I only wish them well in the future and hope they can bring it back some how, so it can stay open. read more

I played Berkleigh on Saturday 8/23/2014 with a tee time of 8:54am. I have been looking forward to playing this course since it went public a few years ago and was disappointed that when I woke up the morning of my tee time it had rained overnight and was still raining. After a call to the clubhouse to make sure that they were still sending people out, I headed out to the course. When I arrived, I was informed that they hadn't sent anyone out yet and were thinking they would start around 9:15 which is understandable considering the weather. I don't know if it was the rain or the multiple phone calls the course had received about the weather but the gentleman in the clubhouse was grumpy and unprofessional. He acted like he was bothered. Luckily once we paid and were waiting on the outside patio, the starter more than made up for the gentleman in the clubhouse. The started was very friendly and took the time to let all the waiting groups know about how long till they started sending people out. We finally teed off about 9:30 (thankfully there were alot of cancellations) and the starter took a little bit of extra time to describe some of the nuances about the course to my group once we told him this was our first trip to Berkleigh. Now onto the course. It is easy to see the the course is very well maintained and taken care off. It is unique in the fact that it has 3 par 5's on the front 9 (4,7, and 9). Even though the course is well maintained there was nothing memorable about the round or the course. I look at it as your standard run of the mill PA course and it is not overly difficult. I felt like I was playing driver-wedge on every hole. The par 5 4th and 7th holes are nice but they are not very difficult. Holes 10 and 17 are a little unique in that you hit your drive across the main drive way leading into the club (so beware when driving into the golf course), however, both holes are straight forward par 4's. I struggled with my rating for the course as I wanted to give it a 4 for the condition the course was in, however, I took into account the fact that I paid $62 for the round. At $62 a round, I would much rather play Bella Vista, Raven's Claw, Lederach, or Broad Run which are all much nicer and more memorable courses in the same price range. I have seen that Berkleigh is on the 'best places to play in PA' list but I would strongly disagree with that. There are much better options to play within a 30 minute drive. read more

This is a great golf course that used to be private until a few years ago. The rates are reasonable, and the course is usually in pretty good condition for a public one. The operator also runs Fox Hollow in Quakertown, and apprarently knows how to run a course well. My favorite hole is the 15th, a downhill par 3 over a giant pond. The only thing that I don't like about this place is trying to make a left turn out of it onto Rt. 222 after a round, which can be almost impossible during rush hour. read more

Play here in an outing once a year including today. A nice course, well maintained and friendly staff. A good layout and variety of holes. Only negative is the cart paths are in terrible shape. read more

Heard a lot of people talk about how prestigious this course was and I was disappointed. We show up on a Friday afternoon and they were short on carts, i understand that since I work at a golf course. so we went to the bar and grille which was nice . After we ate the starter seemed lazy and wasn't sure on when to send people out. The front 9 was easy , pretty boring and the greens were slow, which I hate. The course seemed to be let go. Also right after we get to hole 10 there were 3 groups waiting on the tee. Idk if the starter sent a 4 some out there or not but it made the back 9 take 3 hours . It was pretty exhausting and I grew impatient. Not much to the course especially after playing golden oaks 10 mins away before my round here. Golden oaks is a really nice course and I would drive 50 mins just to play that again. I'm glad I got to say that I played here, but other then that I would not go back read more

$39 for 18 holes on a quality golf course, lunch included and $2 for your first draft beer. You can't beat that!! Fairways and greens were in great shape. A lot of watering going on. We teed off at 7:13 and were done around 3 hours. Great day!!! read more

Just finished 18 beautiful holes , what a golf course, loved the layout . New owner is definitely making a difference in the condition of the course. I've played golf a long time even at a high level on many great courses and I will say this place rates among the nicest places open to the public anywhere. We were met by Glen in the parking lot who took our bags and took the time to inform us about the history there. Greens and fairways were in fine shape and I must say each and every hole there has character. The mature trees take on a beauty of their own and offer plenty of shade from the sun. The course is lined with trees but the wide fairways are very forgiving. There was sand in the traps both greenside and fairway. People who don't play well might not rate this place as highly as it should be simply put this course requires golf course management off the tee to score well. Only negative is the cart paths but in time I'm sure the new owner will perhaps repair parts of them but to a golfer really what does that matter, really. Jay Hileman 2018 read more

My family and I played a round over the 4th of July weekend. We had a group of 4 (3 men & 1 woman). The day started off great and we were enjoying the course overall. However it quickly soured due to the very rude Marshall. The course was not busy and our group was right on pace. For some reason the Marshall would follow us from hole to hole and give us a hard time. We checked the time and we were right on schedule for a 4 hr round. We kept the same pace and ended up completing the round under 4hrs and 10 mins. We were told at the end of the round that there have been similar complaints regarding the Marshall before. We also noticed that the few groups behind us were not waiting at all and that play was flowing just fine not to mention that the group behind us was never waiting for us at the tee box. Golf is meant to be fun and relaxing. Golfers should not pay to be scolded and hassled for 4 hours. There are too many great courses out there to waste your time and money here. read more
