Just no. It's a puppy mill. Don't support it. As soon as you walk in you know. Pups are being handled by anyone who walks in without someone there on the floor to monitor. There are mirrors (obvs two way mirrors) where I'm sure they can see but not interfering with anyone mishandling. There are a number of things that bother me about this shop. And if you are one of the incredibly rare responsible pet owners, you might turn a blind eye to this shop too. There are a number of pros & cons so we'll start with the less technical stuff first. I'll admit, the entire location was very clean & well organized. The cages were clearly labeled with posters featuring each dog breed, a tiny indoor fenced in area for visitors to interact with the puppies & a small selection of pet supplies. However, if you're one of the stereotypical morons who randomly pass through a pet shop & buy the first cute puppy you see without doing any research; you'll love this questionable practice. Since I didn't see any staff members available in this area of the building (it is directly connected to a leather goods shop) unsupervised adults & children were just helping themselves. This alone was a huge red flag as I can't stress enough how truly harmful it is to any pet to be picked up by one hand around the waste , letting their lower body just dangle. But that's another discussion for another time. Anyways, there absolutely should've have been a hands on staff member to assist customers. Of course, very few people can say "no" to an adorable puppy but if the owners of this business can't answer a number of simple questions then you shouldn't do business with them! For starters, they only sell purebreds (which ads to the ever growing over population issue & not the solution) , the posters about the dogs didn't tell you the pros & cons of owning that breed or anything about the dogs that were available (such as weather or not they're vaccinated, spayed & neutered, if that breed is good with other dogs or children,etc). I then attempted to contact the pet shop through their website to ask a number of very important questions (that their site fails to address) without any successful response. If you are dead set on purchasing a pure bred canine; these are the questions you should be asking the breeder. 1) How many times a year do you breed each bitch? 2) How many liters do you allow a bitch to have before you retire her? 3) What do you do with your retired dogs? ***Check to see if the contract you sign with them holds the breeder (as it should) legally/financially responsible if there are any major genetic disorders that might develop as your puppy ages that could have been avoided with proper breeding. There was also no outside area for the puppies to play in & the site itself is very vague. So my main reason for giving this place a 2 star review is due to the lack of response in regards to my questions. This should always be a wake up call to you as a possible pet owner. If any shop or breeder can't answer these questions or their answers aren't what they should be (for example: a bitch should NEVER EVER be bred more than 2 times a year! Some will argue that it depends on the dogs cycle but if you really do your homework... having 2 liters of 5 or more puppies in 12 months is a lot on the bitches body) then please ; take it from a certified Vet Assistant, don't buy the dog! If you think I'm over reacting, keep in mind my main focus is shelter rehabilitation- I'm the one who cleans up an irresponsible pet owners/breeders mess & have a lot of horror stories. Please, Please don't buy a puppy from this place. I live very close by Berlin Pets and I pay close attention to pet businesses nearby. Yes, there are lots of cute puppies here, but they are handled WAY too much without any supervision, because the Amish men and women running the place really don't care about their wellbeing. All those cute puppies are not raised or born at the nice clean Berlin Pets, they are bought from nearby puppy mills at a very low cost as soon as they are 8 weeks and then the price is raised enormously for all the clueless tourists that come through. Ask them where they get their puppies. "Local Amish Breeders" they say but will provide no photos or additional info as to the puppies early life and care. And no, the puppies are not purebred, even if they say they are. I stop by every once in a while to check on things and I know my breeds. Its so obvious some of the puppies they are selling are mixed or an entirely different breed from advertised. The puppy market in Ohio crashed after covid and people no longer bought isolation puppies and this left all those Amish mills with hundreds of dogs with no buyers except for Berlin Pets who couldn't care less about their health or background. This place is 100% in it for the money, and if you want a healthy, happy puppy that won't be stressed out when you bring it home or one that won't get sick a few days later, go to the hundreds of other puppy breeders around Berlin who will let you meet the parents, see the property, and be open about how each litter is raised and treated and provide Health Guarantees and a good solid contract, and THAT will be worth your $800 or $1,000 dollars more than this place will ever be. I promise a puppy's early days matter, and mills continue in full force with places like this around paying them for their sickly, mistreated puppies. read more

This is a must for any animal lover. I delete one star because I question how people can just walk up and grab dogs with no consideration for the dogs well being. Kids grabbing by any possible position or limb makes me nervous but it's a great place to interact with several breeds of dogs and play with them because they all have their own personality. read more

I was so excited to visit this place when we came to the Amish countr. being a huge animal lover my excitement was over the moon. I walked in and was absolutely horrified. These poor puppies were being handled by tons of people and kids, I'm talking 2 yr old kids with no supervision at all. One kid had one holding it by the the neck. These poor puppies looked exhausted and you know their little bodies were sore from everyone holding them. One person would hold them they would put down and another would grab them. The young girl who worked there was oblivious to what was happening. It was heartbreaking to say the least and I left there in tears. These poor puppie. read more

This place is very nice. It has cute puppies that you can interact with. Pure breed puppies even! But...why so expensive? I should not have to walk up to the adoption count and have them ask me if I want to make a down payment or take out a loan for a dog. Other than that. Great! read more

Really wish there were more rules for visitors to abide by. Every time I've been, I've witnessed young kids holding the puppies wrong, without any support, and playing roughly with them in the playpen. It makes me feel uncomfortable and angry. There should be more restrictions for children or parents should be held responsible for watching their children closely. read more

I love that you can hold the puppies! I've been here several times. The prices however are outrageous. I understand they may be "pure breeds" but I can't imagine spending $1900 on a puppy. Plus I'm not sure if they come from puppy mills or not. I would rather adopt from a shelter but I really want a puppy and it's hard to find in a shelter. Going to Amish country is one of our family's favorite experience, especially when there is a pet store that has so many adorable pups that we can hold! We have been to this store many times and have always been impressed by the cleanliness and atmosphere of the store. We purchased a pup in 2016 for $499.00. He was said to be a Bischon/Yorkie mix called a Yorkiechon. We have enjoyed this little dog and up till now, never would have hesitated purchasing again from these owners ( except for the exorbitant prices). We chose to have our dogs DNA done, and just today got the results. Would you guess, there is not one drop of Bischon or Yorkie in our dog?!?!?!? We do not care for him any less, but he is a mix of at least 6 breeds! read more

It stunk and children were constantly handling these poor puppies like they were stuffed animals, which is probably why they were so tired and not acting how puppies should act! We LOVE this store! On September 10th we visited the store to see what puppies they had to offer. After grieving the loss of my 12 year old Yorkie-pom, our house didn't feel right without a dog. We are retired. We were impressed with the puppies, held a few to sense their personalities, read the signs posted about each breed. There were a lot of mixed breeds (some people call them designer dogs). And boy were they clean! They all smelled so nice when we held them. They were CLEAN. A puppy could not be any cleaner than these were! You could also see that they were very healthy, and were up to date with their immunizations. They were also very socialized. The girl who worked there was very sweet and kind. She answered all of our questions, with a smile, and helped us chose our puppy. We went home with a Cavachon...a breed we had never heard of before. Our puppy, hardly ever barks, which is what my husband wanted in a dog, she is a loving lap dog, and does not shed. We are pleased! We highly recommend this store if you are looking for a puppy! The antique store and craft store are also great. You could spend a day here. But a word of warning...one of the puppies may steal your heart! read more

I love to stop in there every time we go to Berlin, which is at least once a year. I LOVE being able to cuddle the puppies and get them out of their pens for awhile. It has always been clean in there and a lot better than other pet stores I have seen. We bought a Maltese Shih tzu from them about 4 years ago. He is the love of my life!! He did have a bit of kennel cough when we got him and has a huge underbite (which makes his adorable face one that only a mother could love). The kennel cough was treated and went away quickly. Other than that he has been a really healthy dog. On the other hand, we had purchased a Aussie from a "reputable" breeder with all the papers to show for it. Thousands of dollars later he died at only 4 years old from a genetic defect. So, one never really knows. read more

I adopted my dog Ulia from Berlin Pet Shop, I came all the way from Maryland. Soon as we went home I took her to the vet and she had a clear bill of health. The vet said she was healthy no issues. I typically adopt dogs from the pound but couldn't resist Ulia but I did research this place before I adopted Ulia. They are not a puppy mill and they treat their dogs very well. To the review of the kids handling the puppies wrong that is also up to the parents who are suppose to be watching them to teach them and redirect them about how to properly handle the puppies. I will say that all the interactions and socialization at the store has helped my puppy I can take her to work with me and she is so calm and gentle with kids and adults because she was so socialized at this pet shop. If I was to adopt from a store again I would come here. When giving info let's make sure the info is true and correct! These people really care about the animals and their well being, there may be cases where puppy's may have a virus but that isn't unusual when dogs are around other dogs!l read more

We visited Berlin Pet Shoppe on 10/20/2018 and I was looking forward to writing a great review about buying our new puppy- key word was. Let me start by saying I do think the buying experience was positive. It was quick and easy, you have lots of time to get to know the puppies before you decide to buy and the environment was really well kept. HOWEVER- 3 days after we brought our sweet puppy home he got extremely sick. By Friday we had him at an emergency vet visit and almost $200 later he was diagnosed with Kennel Cough and an eye infection. Vet confirmed the incubation period for Kennel Cough is seven days so he was exposed prior to us purchasing him. He is now on antibiotics and eye drops for 10 days. What makes this situation worse is that we have two other dogs who now also have Kennel Cough and we are now close to $500 in vet bills. I don't know what can prevent this from happening to other puppies in the future but it should definitely be considered when buying a puppy and bringing it into a home with other dogs.
